Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary, Thabo Kawana, has announced the production of 42,200 Braille books to enhance access to information for visually impaired citizens in the country.
Mr Kawana disclosed that the initiative marks a departure from past practices where visually impaired learners depended on others to read for them.
He was speaking in an interview with the media on the sidelines of the Africa Public Service Day in Lusaka .
“In the past, someone would have to stand and read, but this will be no more,” said Mr Kawana.
Mr Kawana noted that the development reflects the government’s commitment to inclusivity at all levels.
“This means no one will be left behind, including those that are visually impaired. It tells you that you are with a government that cares for all its people regardless of background, location, or condition,” he stated.
The published Braille books will be distributed to over 20 schools and higher learning institutions across the country to support learning and service delivery for persons with visual impairment.
