Stepfather rapes, impregnates step daughter

A 42-year-old Malawian national has been arrested for allegedly raping his 18-year-old stepdaughter, resulting in a pregnancy.

Zambia Police Service Eastern Province Commanding Officer, Robertson Mweemba has confirmed the incident which was reported on June 29 at Chiparamba Police Post under Chipata Central Police.

Mr Mweemba said the alleged abuse committed by Misiyasi Phiri, is believed to have occurred between February and the first week of June this year while the victim’s mother, also a Malawian national, was away receiving medical treatment.

Mr Mweemba said the victim disclosed to her mother that she had allegedly been subjected to repeated sexual abuse and threats by her stepfather during her mother’s absence.

“Brief facts of the matter are that in the month of April 2026, the complainant who was heavily pregnant by her husband went to Chanyumbu Rural Health Post where she spent a month due to her health complications leaving the victim home alone with the suspect and her two younger siblings aged 10 and 6yrs,” he said.

Mr Mweemba said the matter was reported to village leaders before being taken to the police.

“Police have since arrested the suspect and issued the victim with a medical report form and transferred the suspect to Chipata Central Police Station,” he said.

Mr Mweemba said Phiri is expected to appear in court, while investigations continue.
