Government has assured all families affected by the expansion of the Mongu Airport that their compensation will be completed before the end of July 2026, paving way for the commencement of works to upgrade the facility to international standard.
Western Province Deputy Permanent Secretary, Richard Mulwanda, says government remains committed to ensuring that every project affected household receives its compensation in line with established procedures.
Speaking in an interview with the media, Mr Mulwanda explained that the government adopted a phased payment approach to enable compensation to be processed efficiently.
He said under the second phase, government prioritized claimants whose compensation packages were below K100,000, while the remaining beneficiaries will be paid during the third and final phase.
Mr Mulwanda disclosed that government, is expecting additional funds to facilitate the final phase of compensation, adding that the release of the funds will enable authorities to settle all outstanding payments and conclude the compensation exercise before the end of the month.
He emphasized that the completion of compensation is a key milestone, as it will allow contractors to move onto the site and commence the long-awaited upgrade of the Mongu Airport.
He noted that the airport expansion project forms part of the government’s broader infrastructure development agenda aimed at improving air transport, enhancing regional connectivity, promoting tourism and trade, and stimulating economic growth in Western Province.
He further appealed to all affected families to remain patient as the government finalizes the compensation process, assuring them that no eligible beneficiary will be left out of the exercise.
