Several stakeholders have criticised National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) leader Brian Mundubile over remarks linking the burial of former President Edgar Lungu to the outcome of the August 13 General Election.
Southern African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) Executive Director Arthur Muyunda said the passing of a former Head of State should be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of political differences.
God’s Divine Mission International Ministries Pastor Nyirenda also condemned the remarks, saying using the death of a former President to attract votes is inconsistent with the values of a Christian nation.
He said former President Lungu deserves to be honoured with dignity and should never be used as a tool for political campaigns.
Meanwhile, Youth Development Foundation Executive Director Chinoya Muyeye described statements seeking to use the late former President’s burial for political gain as unacceptable and not worthy of encouragement.
Governance expert Ng’ande Mwanajiti also criticised the remarks, saying no political candidate should manipulate citizens or exploit the death of a former Head of State for political advantage.
He said matters relating to the burial of a former President should not be turned into campaign issues.
Meanwhile, concerned citizen Michael Lombe said the burial of a former Head of State is a matter of national importance and should not be linked to electoral outcomes or become a subject of political campaigning.
