The Independent Churches of Zambia (ICOZ) has expressed concern over what it describes as an increasing promotion of homosexuality among young people, saying the practice is contrary to Zambia’s cultural values and Christian beliefs.
Speaking in an interview with to the media today, ICOZ President Bishop David Masupa said the church remains opposed to homosexuality, citing biblical teachings and Zambia’s Christian nation declaration as the basis for its position.
Bishop Masupa said the church believes homosexuality is not in line with Christian doctrine, adding that the biblical account of Sodom and Gomorrah demonstrates God’s disapproval of such conduct.
“We cannot call ourselves a Christian nation and at the same time pretend that practices which are contrary to our Christian values are acceptable. We are concerned about what we see as an increasing influence of homosexuality, particularly among the youth,” Bishop Masupa said.
He further stated that consensual same-sex sexual conduct remains prohibited under Zambian law and called on law enforcement agencies to continue enforcing the country’s laws.
Bishop Masupa also said the church believes the promotion of homosexuality undermines the country’s Christian identity and moral values.
He attributed what he described as the growing influence of homosexuality among young people to content shared on social media, saying many youths are influenced by what they watch and interact with online.
Bishop Masupa has since urged young people to uphold Christian principles and avoid practices that the church considers inconsistent with biblical teachings.
He encouraged parents, religious institutions and other stakeholders to strengthen moral guidance and mentorship for young people to help them make responsible life choices.
