“My series Generation Z aims to document the changing urban experience in Lusaka.  The images of the emerging middle class question the usual visual experience of Africa. They highlight the emergence of a section of society which is internationally connected, has disposable income and is politically active.

“The photographs presents an alternative vision of a different, 21st century African life rarely discussed in the West.  It is important that people in Zambia, and in all developing nations, use photography to help change perceptions at home and abroad. Too often we only see negative images of the African continent and while these images are also true, they are not the only truth.” – Kerstin Hacker

  1. A few of these photos are remarkable, the rest are not exhibition worthy. My 2 year old daughter takes better pictures!

  2. Where are most of the exhibition pix? I can’t pick out much from the pix on what the exhibition was all about

    • Sorry, didn’t read the caption below the pix. LT should have started with the caption. 😉

  3. “Generation Z Exhibition” sounds too good to be reduced to a mere pictography of a changing urban scene. I expected something broader when I clicked on it.

I thought it was a similar concept to the recently ended EXPO 2017 in Hannover, Germany where all kinds of ideas and innovations on topics such as renewable energy, future transport methods, food production and distribution etc. can be presented with practical examples.

Is there already something like this apart from the Trade Fair and Agricultural shows which have been around for ages?

  4. nice pictures and thanks for the initiative..i can already see the african mind being negative and trying to find fault in this initiative..they are happy to see Zambia as LT portrays it and dont understand this.

keep up the good work Kerstin

  5. Thanks Kerstin, but emerging middle class ? From a historical point, Zambia, had a wealthy class through out the late 60’s and early to mid 70’s. I think if you called it the re-urbanising of Cities in Zambia, after infrastructural developments you might have nailed, closer to what is happening in Zambia currently. Yes, after Debt forgiveness by the West most African countries are picking up the damage of the late 70’s to early 2000. The signs you depict are in fact evidence that economies have regenerated enough to become inclusive to the world standard. This is positive and a thanks to Sir Geldof and others who fought to end poverty on the economy.

    • The seeds of good Western thinking have brought forth this new regenerated wealth and ambience. As argued, Debt forgiveness was imperative also for a Western economies. Investors are raking in wealth from the African continent into Western economies.
