The Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) has seized assorted goods worth K 224, 905.00 between March and December 2015 in Lusaka.

The products include 612 boxes counterfeit shoe polish purported to be Kiwi polish valued at over K 125,000, non-compliant electric cables and appliances valued at over K 29,165 and 39 bales of used under garments valued at K 58,500.00.

And a total of K315, 980.26 was paid to the bureau by the various companies as penalty fees.

ZABS Head of Marketing and Public Relations Hazel Zulu said the bureau was concerned about the health and safety of the consumers who use the counterfeit goods.

Mrs. Zulu has since urged consumers about the dangers of buying and using substandard products.

She said Zambians must be quality conscious and should take time to read product details for their own safety.

She has warned traders and manufacturers that selling of substandard products was a violation of the standards Act Cap 416 of the laws of Zambia and can result in them losing their trade permit.

The seized substandard and counterfeit products have since been incinerated at Chunga dump site.
