Green Party president Peter Sinkamba has yet again become the first presidential hopeful to concede defeat amidst growing tension in the Thursday elections.
Mr Sinkamba in 2015 was the first presidential candidate to concede defeat.
Appearing live on ZNBC TV’s election update program, as scores of millions of Zambians are glued to their television sets, awaiting the final results announced, Mr Sinkamba said he has demonstrated leadership by being the first leader, as always, to dilute the tension and concede defeat and called on other colleagues to do the same.
He said that he did so in order to make it easier for the main contenders to do the same, provided it doesn’t go their way.
“Myself, being the only contender, as proclaimed by many stakeholders, as having a clear manifesto and agenda. But Zambians have got their preferences and it is not for me to force them.
“Let our politicians come out in the open and talk to their cadres like I did. When I found the PF cadres prematurely celebrating, I told them to hold on to the jubilation until ECZ announces final winner because that had the capacity to provoke others.
“There is nothing peculiar about this election and the international community have declared these elections peaceful, free, and fair. Congratulations to my fellow candidates and the three main contenders Edith Nawakwi, Hakainde Hichilema, Edgar Lungu for putting up a good election campaign,” he said.
He also said the amended Constitution gives any aggrieved party to petition the results within 7 days hence any aggrieved candidate should use the right channels to air their grievances which is the constitutional court.
And People’s Alliance for Change (PAC) President, Andyford Banda has conceded defeat in the 2016 Presidential election.
Mr. Banda has told ZNBC news in Lusaka today that PAC will build on the gains made in this election to prepare for the 2021 general election.
He also says despite the ECZ not having fully announced the results, he is very sure, his party will not win.
Mr. Banda has also invited young people that want to contest the elections in 2021 on his party ticket to start preparations now.
He is however impressed with the performance of his party in the August 11 polls.
Meanwhile, the wait for the final results has contnued. ECZ had promised to provide an update at 06:00 this monrning, but it has now been well over 6 hours that has passed.
And Home Affairs Permanent Secretary, Dr. Chileshe Mulenga has said government would not allow or tolerate any breakdown in Law and Order.
He said citizens should report any acts of criminal misbehaviour or any acts of lawlessness to the Police or should call the free toll lines
Dr. Mulenga said that anyone intending to disrupt Zambia’s Peace was an enemy of Democracy and the full force of the law will be applied to them regardless of status.
He said that Zambians voted in peace and were anxiously waiting for the full results.
He also advised people to report to Police if they witnessed or met public disturbances.
“Kindly give exact location to enable us respond immediately to potential points of indiscipline and disorderly behaviour. Stay alert too to stop the enemies of Democracy”.
EACH & EVERY ONE OF THE 77,000 VOTES THAT HAVE BEEN HIDDEN/WITHDRAWN IN LUSAKA, WILL HAVE TO BE REINSTATED!!!!!! NOTHING LESS THAN THIS SHOULD BE ACCEPTABLE!!!!!!

Threats are not solutions. You can deal with me fine (I’m not afraid BTW). Whats your answer these questions, inflation 20+%, over 70% of the 16M Zambians are illiterate. Less than 2M formal jobs from a 16M population. Mono economy (copper based) for 52 years, perpetual energy shortages, lack of clean water in the capital 52 years after independence, RTSA, ZP, ECZ corruption. Continuous borrowing at any rate (current debt $9.75 this represents a 176% from the 2011 which was $3.5 billion). You can’t get a loan in Zambia at a normal rate because markets have no confidence in the current capacity of Zambians. You move with more than one cell phone in your pocket (Do you know what that implies)
So what is happening behind the scenes while these results are being awaited? This is the question Zambians should be asking. It is disgraceful in this time and age, whether by negligence or crook, that tallying up of numbers should take so long amidst a shambles of an ECZ.

Let common sense prevail and let the Zambian people live a life they are used to. I have a preference for my President to be, but others have too! If my candidate has no indication of having been chosen by the majority, I would feel aggrieved and search reasons why, but would not incite trouble, for the sake of the very country I love.

Mr Sinkamba’s reasoning sounds dull. How do you encourage others to concede defeat without offering them procedural fairness? This kind of leadership is what has brought down African economies to their perpetual begging knees. Leaders must correct the wrongs that they have spotted in the current governance or electoral systems. One must be brave and call out the wrongs for the benefit of future generations and not just his. Why would a sensible visionary leader carry on as if everything is normal when his political neighbours are complaining about the perceived injustices in the currect electoral system? Just like sweeping dirty under the carpet. This mediocre and selfish way of reasoning must come to an end if we are to truly progress as a country. Let us learn to call out the wrongs…

Those alleging rigging of these elections are either very dull or ignorant of the electoral process in Zambia. At each polling station and constituency, each political party has a polling agent who certifies the correctness of the election results and keeps a hard copy of the results as evidence that the results have been verified. In fact, the polling agent even appends his signature to the verified results. Rigging is therefore only possible if the polling agent of a political party is either very dull, has been bribed, or is just plainly stupid. Rigging Zambian elections is virtually impossible. Ba UPND muleloba ilyauma by even taking this case to the ConCourt!
