Govt launches Renewable Energy Feed-n Tariff

Government has launched a 20 Mega Watts Renewable Energy Feed-in Tariff (REFIT) Strategy aimed at accelerating private investments in small and medium sized renewable energy projects in Zambia.

Speaking during the launch at Government Complex , Minister of Energy David Mabumba said the strategy will increase the access of electricity in rural areas as well as help diversify power generation in Zambia which is highly dependent on Hydro power generation.

Mabumba says the strategy is one of the remedial measures Government has put in place to reduce high poverty levels in far-flung areas as people will have the platform to venture into activities to uplift their livelihoods.

And speaking at the same event, Economic Development Office Director for America Embassy Jeremy Bolley pledged to offer technical support to Zambia through the newly launched programme in order for the country to diversify and increase its power generation.

Bolley has since expressed optimism that REFiT will transform Zambia as well as Africa in terms of power generation capacity which is currently low.

Put simply, Feed-in tariff means “to sell/supply power to e.g. ZESCO at an agreed price”

By location, far-flung rural places are very far AWAY from the power National Grid. So, how will people in those far-flung locations feed-in (supply to ZESCO) the surplus power they generate from their Solar…
