Find money for MMD convention, Magande told

THE MMD has challenged former Finance minister N’gandu Magande and others insisting on the national convention to fund the meeting as the party has failed to raise the required amount of money.

Acting spokesperson Mike Mulongoti said the party was disappointed that those calling for the convention had not shown any willingness to give financial contribution despite championing the calls.

Mr Mulongoti said in an interview yesterday that the MMD national executive committee (NEC) was not against holding the convention but had no money to host the event.

“We have challenged those championing the holding of the convention to come up with resources but none of those who are making such calls including Mr Magande has shown interest in contributing financially,” he said.[quote]

He said a wrong impression had been created that the NEC did not want to hold the national convention because it did not want the president of the party and other members to be challenged.

He challenged those who have been speaking the loudest to fund the convention if they wanted it to be held.

Mr Mulongoti said those calling for the convention and claiming to have the interests of the party at heart should be willing to fund the meeting.

Recently, President Rupiah Banda said the MMD should be left to debate whether the convention should be deferred until after 2011 elections because that was part of the internal democracy.

Mr Banda said he had not feared to be challenged by any person contrary to insinuations by some people.

He said most of the opposition parties had never held a single convention but nobody was talking about them.

The NEC has since endorsed President Banda as the sole party candidate for the 2011 general elections and members from the provinces did not see any need to go for a convention.

And former Defence minister George Mpombo has said he would not stop demanding that the MMD holds the convention and there is no need to ask individual parties members to fund the national convention because the MMD had the means to do so.

Mr Mpombo said in an interview the argument that the funds were not available could not hold saying in the last presidential elections, the MMD was able to source funds from well-wishers at home and abroad.

He said he would continue agitating for a convention because that was the only way the MMD would prove to be democratic.

Mr Mpombo also denied insinuations that he was one of the prominent citizens working with some diplomats with a view of bringing down the Government.

  1. The picture of the Hon looks funny, was the nose fixed on top of the mouth! Jokes aside, things are no longer at ease. Too many problems in Zambia.

  2. Iwe Kamulongoti your party has alot of stolen money from poor Zambians just use it for convention instead of sharing among yourselves. I know Bwezani and his followers are fearing to be challenged.

  3. So, ALL the political parties in Zambia are broke. If the parties cannot manage their financial affairs, how can we expect them to manage state funds? Failing to hold the convention now and postponing to AFTER 2011 means only one thing, and that is that they want to use state resources. This applies to ALL of them because not a single party has held a convention since Chiluba’s days. Chiluba was the master of ‘mobilising funds’ and now we know that it was through ZISS. They are all in breach of their constitutions and I think they may have a case to answer in court. See you guys in court!

  4. WHAT NEXT, BEFOR YOU KNOW THEY WILL CLAIM THAT THE COUNTRY HAS NO MONEY FOR GENERAL ELECTIONS AND BRING A DICTATORSHIP UPON US. GOD HAVE MERCY.

  5. Am not Lozi (am Bemba) but i have always respected Westerners. over the years i have come to support the Barotse Establishment because it would be the best thing to happen to all honest and trustworthy Zambians. At least we would have somewhere to go and leave the corrupt, greedy and selfish elements with their Zambia. The other provinces endorsed this silly petition because muzulu, no principles at all bamu selela kwakaba.

  6. KaMulongoti!!! What a time waster you are!! Since when did the MMD fail to raise money for a convention. Please we have been there since the down-fall of UNIP. Now for the sake of keeping your jobs you want UNIP to creep back with all its shushushu machinations to silence Zambians. Mubepele fye bangwele. This is a new Zambia, not the pre-1991 state where one could not trust his own wife or child incase they report him to the BOMA. Takuli bane, this time wina azalila,I wish the years could run faster so that we get to 2011. Twatendwa nenu!!!!!!!!

  7. RB will rule in 2011. Pipo will talk Sata will insult the Post will decampaign but all will be vain. This is Zed for you. Just work hard pipo and make your sheets the rest is a waste of time

  8. Ba Mulongoti ask Chiluba to fund the convention. He has a lot of money. He can even take you for treatment in SA. Free advice to you Mr Mulongoti, don’t talk too much. Its not good for your poor health. Or else ……………..

  9. I only hope with my last breath that Mulongoti is not a witch! Because if he is, none of victims would be shown mercy. The chap is truly a personal envoy of the devil and an ambassador of evil in Zambia. Even the way he looks on this picture tells alot, like he’s embalmed. All the lies they could create, they only chose to use money as an excuse for not holding the convention? To hell with your internal democracy! What a fallacy it is. MMD has gone at great length in disrespecting those people it governs in this nation and those withing its wings, who’re perceived to hold divergent views from those of the master cronies. This is just one best way of securing Rupiah Kanitundila’s candidacy for 2011’s General elections, just stop the likes of Magande from contesting the party presidency

  10. The excuse Mulongoti is giving is a very clear indication that the MMD is stone broke. Now, if they cannot run their own party finances in a prudent manner, how can they run the national ones? Impossible! And asking Magande to pay for the convention is plain s.t.u.p.i.d.i.f.y., Mulongoti must learn to engege his brain before opening that big for nothing mouth of his. With the problems arising from the West and also with Western donors, one would have thought this Mulongoti of theirs will wake up and realise “inshiku shakwa Noah shawina” but awe sure, the silly Ostrich’s head is still buried deep mu muchanga.

  11. Ka Mulongoti, can your NEC of the MMD & RB resign if you cant raise money for the party to hold a convention. You have been unwilling to hold a convention hence no donor has been forthcoming to support you. Can you call for the convention and then request for convention, you will see cash flowing from ordinary members and well wisher..You failure un elected Mulongoti

  12. What happened to the famous ‘Meet the President’ fundraising dinners? If I remember correctly, the coporate world would try to outdo each other by seeing who would make the largest donations. Why, some donations were as large as K100m! So, what has happened to the fundraising committee? And isn’t the economy supposed to be getting better? Indeed, if MMD can’t manage its own resources, why should we trust it with ours?

  13. Mulongoti you are such a disappointment! How can NEC fail to raise money? This is pure INCOMPETENCE and that is why you are SCARED of being voted OUT at the Convention!! Why do you want to prolong your stay in power when you cannot raise money for the party. Get advise from FTJ on how he raised the $8m deposited in the Zamtrop account.

  14. I only hope Mulongoti will heed my fellow blogger’s advice (Tionge #10). The advice is very timely, and am convinced it’s coming from a very concerned brother, coz looking at the man’s (Mulo) picture, health is questionable & so adding diarrhoea of the mouth to such poor health will only mean quickening the pace of digging his………………………………….@ Mtumbi…………..!!! Bakalamba mwilandikisha, ifintu tafili bwino. Mulepepafye ati mukapwishefye pamo ka term of office kakwa RB, then u can retire from active politics, that way it’ll save u a great dignity!

  15. What Mulongoti is talking about leaves musch to be desired. How can a man in his normal thnking expect a member to fund hosting of a convention nd what can stop such a person from buying the delegates or doctoring a list of delegates. Remember RB said that during the last by elections pipo used to bring sacks of money in the night so what has changed now. Hosting of the convention is not a one man show but collective. Have the lkes of Katele and Mabenga this time around run out formulars to fund raise for the convention. MMD being a ruling party should be above board and stop comparing itself to opposition political parties. MMD should lead by example. No wonder Namakando and others are calling the current tendancy as inrtroduction of UNIP Branch in MMD inner circles.

  16. Splaka #14 You’re right about the “Meet the President” Fundraising dinners that were used a platform for raising money to fund such events, but at the moment, which President would one look forward to meeting during the said dinners and later one pledge millions for the same? I shudder to know! The corporate world had no confidence in this leadership, so it wouldn’t want to waste its resources sponsoring a system emitting a serious stench of corruption! It’s actually good that they want to forego the convention, that way, it will make it very easy to eliminate them come 2011. Let them keep the current material for 2011 elections in the hope of securing their jobs, but I know they’ve no idea what we intend to do with OUR VOTE this time around! Viva RB!!! Your farm is calling!

  17. Ba Mulongoti, there a lot of fundrising ventures you could come up with, you pretty know that RB will not make it at the convention hence these remarks. M.a.t.a.k.o yenu ba mike.

  18. I don’t believe Mulongoti is so dull to suggest that the MMD has got no funds for the Convention, Doesn’t he know that his addressing intellectuals here, who doesn’t know that the call not to hold the convention is because they want RB to automatically stand in 2011 anyway its will be at their own  peril, the 30000 margin he won with last time will this time be 300000 against him.

  19. Only a sleepy President would trust such a character, this guy does not care what would happen to RB in 2011, understandably why should he, considering his poor health. RB wake this guy is poison he doesn’t like you at all, look how twists his lips when he’s talking. Ba RB smell the coffee Mulongoti is worse than Teta, George and Ronnies put together despite them all having one thing in common – contaminated blood if you know what i mean.

  20. if they have no money, where are they going to get money to sponsor their members participation in General elections. Nimbwalala ishi.

  21. Hon Magande is Chairman for Finance Committe for the MMD. He has not be Treasurer at all. Let the Convention be held. FTJ had his 2, LPM had 1 why not have 1 for RB. Let him lose at the convetntion and the winiing candidate wins the Republican. RB cannot win the 2011 elections. He may only win if PF/UPND field Sata not HH. Wait and see. No convetion for MMD means no VICTORY for THEM. Magande please realign yourself and get to stand in either Chikankata or Magoye constituencies on UPND/PF. Goodn luck! If you can beat them AVOID THEM AND MAINTAIN YOUR DIGNITY

  22. Imwe the whole issue here is RB is fearing defeat from Magande at the indaba ,nothing else period!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. The ability to fundraise and manage funds is also a test of leadership ability. The MMD has failed on this score. The commitment to follow the provisions of the MMD constitution is yet another litmus test. The MMD has again failed on this score. Fundraising efforts and strategies are not even being pursued. How then can these men and women be trusted to prudently govern this nation? Doesn’t it explain why Personal Emoluments make up 50% of our national budget. Very little is invested on capital projects. Zambia needs a break from this MMD leadership.

  24. oK MULONGOTI, I WILL PAY 10,000USA$ TOWARDS THE CONVETION. JUST CONTACT ME AT FTJ.KAFUPICOM.ZM. YABA YOU GUYS NEVER CEASE TO AMZE ME. NON OF YOU NEC MEMBERS IS ELECTED AND YOU JUST WANT TO HANG ON TO THOSE POSITIONS BA CABWA IMWE

  25. Mulongoti should stop speaking out of his a.r.s.e. Is it Magandes duty to raise funds for MMD? Since when did they raise funds anyway? All they do is pick up the phone and get from Zesco, Finance group of companies, BOZ etc. What a waste of space!

  26. Lt, tumbolo tufupi that is your problem. You are always copying other people stories. That is whhy you have lost readers. look at this story on top, only 400 views since morning and mostly these are just maybe ten or so people who keep on coming here. Mwabe tunyo kwati nyoko

  27. It true Lusaka times. Your stories are 24 hours late. always waiting for times of Zambia. Am sure the next stories will come from ZANIS.

  28. Sometime back, when people were calling on the PF to hold a convention, I questioned the wisdom of holding conventions in the midst of high poverty level around the country and the low productivity currently obtaining in Zambia. I suggested that political parties would better serve their membership by establishing business ventures which would create employment for their membership and in turn improve the financial status of parties. I further suggested that parties should consider adopting leadership selection and replacement mechanisms which would not need expensive conventions but  would be acceptable to all members. e.g The highly successful and very rich communist party of China does not choose its leaders through conventions.

  29. If really Mike (Mupaipi) Mulongoti doesnt want RB to come and be embarrassed in 2011 during the general elections let MMD hold their convention and test the popularity of Bwezani otherwise if they continue with this talk of no convention then they should be ready for a bad vote massacre in 2011. Any way Mulongoti has nothing to lose he has no constituency he represents so whatever happens to MMD is not a problem to him.

  30. Y should people just focus on MMD to hold the conventio?,does it mean that people have only hope in MMD carrying the day in 2011? Am glad we all appriciate that fact coz if PF and UPND are not being asked to hold a convention then we are all MMD chaps. Now weather convention or not the fact remains in zambia there is not sitting president who has lost elections at the convention so people stop wasting time, complaing about every issue in the media just work HARD and make yo own sheet otherwise nothing will change in yo life just complaints u wont go anywhere u have to stat focussing on important things to u politics muzakafa na heart attack this is zed my brothers and sisters most of u wast a lot of time just toking but u not doing anything to better yo life and yo neighbours just tok…

  31. Bwezani managed to reaise funds for the national soccer team. How come he can not do it for his party? If he can fail to do it now for his party then MMD it’s time Zambian’s should believe that RB and his thughs have lost favour in the sight of many business people of this country. What kind of members does MMD has who have no interest in supporting their party. No one is in love with MMD, not even Mulongoti. Let’s do away with this r-o-t-e-n government come 2011

  32. Find money for what??
Useless rantings/yappings so called conventions which do not yield any tangible results???

    ma labbish!!!

  33. Editor,    There are insults at No:34 which are not necessary, what is the point of publishing such. Meanwhile this Mulongoti character thinks we are fools, Yesterday he was talking of endorsements and now that they have been challenged, he is talking of funds. Shame on him.

  34. # 30 YOU ARE RIGHT IF SOMEONE IS FAILING TO MANAGE HIS HOME HOW ABOUT THE WHOLE VILLAGE,IF THEY CANT FUNDRISE FOR THE PART THEN ITS NEVER POSSIBLE FOR THE WHOLE NATION NEVERTHELESS PF/UPND SHOULD DO SO .

  35. I don’t get this notion of people not having money as a party, we are not even supposed to hear about this. As a party you need to work together and fundraise thats why you fail to run the country, you have no ideas of how to raise money even for your own party because you want to use tax payers money to do this, clearly a party that can not even fund itself should not be in leadership. This is what is wrong with this country becasue people tend to have e dependent mind than independent.

Get proactive and get to work as a party instead of enriching yourselves. WHo is a leader of MMD these days anyway, everyone seems to be talking and thats because people join parties as long as it can give them a job and not because you understand the principles and believe in them. Shame to you…

  36. When did MMD attempt to raise funds. If they did, when did they stop and how much did they raise for them to say it was not enough.
From day 1, Teta and Mulongoti started campaining for No Convention.

These guys are shamelss thieves. I hope that RB will be voted out of power in 2011. Then MMD will die like UNIP.

  37. mike is just another confused fella..we need new blood with fresh ideas..kamuntu kodwala dwala ..ala!u chaps have money and u can do it..u fear RBB is gonna lose?hahahaha..the old man is not going anywhere once convention is held…people like mike and shaikawasha got to be challenged and flashed out..thanx God Teta is gone..

  38. Today you don’t have the money for the conve……!!!!???? Has RB sucked it all. Be serious and for once behave like you can follow your party constitution; you are a ruling party. THINK AND REASON LIKE HUMAN BEINGS NOTLIKE ANIMALS IN THE THICKEST OF JUNGLES.

  39. Alo its trying to maintain jobs. Lies over and over again. They always say leaders should never surround themselves with people that just kiss a** and never tell the leader the truth. This right here is the downfall of RB and his so called advisors or followers.

  40. aka bulu bulu! anytime these clowns Shikapwasha, mulongoti, mangani and akulu mphuno open their mouths, its circus once again!

  41. Hallejay alarm bells:If MMD part officials can not manage their finances. How do we expect them to run the finances of the Zambian economy. Hallejay alarm bells:If MMD part officials can not manage their finances. How do we expect them to run the finances of the Zambian economy.

If MMD party officials can not manage their finances. How do Zambians honestly expect them to run the finances of the Zambian economy? These MMD party leaders are elected to host these events which are only held once every four years. One of their duties is to fund raise for their party. It is a bad sign If these leaders are too lazy to hold a convention just imagine how lazy they will be to fix the economy. Timing is important no-one is interested in a convention after the election. What if another party wins 2011?

  42. MMD should not hide behind lack of funds as reason for not holding the convention and it does not make sense to be challenging the likes of Magande to raise funds for the party in their individual capacity. Its very unhealthy for NEC positions to be passing hands like gifts. If not careful MMD will go down the drain like UNIP. How do we expect MMD to effectively run our public affairs if they fail to raise party funds?

  43. Iam not an MMD Member but i would like to add my voice as a citizen of zambia being ruled by the party in confussion, since when has the party been funded by an individual in this country or is it madness that is tomenting some big fish from un recognised rivers passing in un recognised society, we ask GOD to deliver them before they destroy many.

  44. Don’t people really know how useless this chap Mulongoti and all those thugs surrounding RB are? Do you really need to entertain such crap? This guy is as useless as garbage gets. God help us.

  45. Am afraid the current MMD leadership is very incopetent, how can they fail to raise funds for the convention. This is enough ground to vote them out because they have failed the party. It is unprecedented in the history of the MMD for the party to fail to raise funds for the convention, for theat matter a rulling party.shame on you Mulongoti. By the way, Mulongoti should have challenged RB, the acting party president, to find money for the convention and NOT Magande, so this appeal is misdirected man………………….

  46. Iam suggesting that the NCC should provide in the constitution making process that no body should be allowed to contest the presidency seat if such a one has not been elected through a convention by his/her party.

  47. Mike Mulongoti is miles away from reality. He talks scrap no wonder the likes of him after the collapse NIEC Ltd ended up running failed tutembas. And what we expect from such men with their heads full of air. There is no grey stuff to talk about. Its a pity that RB is surrounded by YES MEN and he will only realise how useless these are when right time comes. This is the same way KK used to be cheated and at the 11th hour most of the men and women deserted him.

  48. Read the sory on what UNZa will be doing registration of students. ICT at peak play. Forget Mr PIPE, MR PAIPI or CHIMUPAIPI

  49. this chap mulongoti is full of crap. if he has failed with his RB to find money for the convention let them stepdown. mulongoti and his friend shikapwasha are political toxins/ political zombies. mpombo really knows how to describe them. if they think they ll continue shitting in the faces of zambians then zambians will twice shit into their faces

  50. The MMD has money for the convention, but for us in the oposition its okey if they dont hold there convention we shall face Nyama Soya in 2011

  51. If your fat A.s.s president didn’t spend so much time and money on useless trips abroad you’d have all the money you need to hold a convention. You are just scared you will get you butts kicked at the convention and your gravey train will come to a grinding halt!! You think Zambians are f.o.o.l.s? 2011 is fast approaching. Better steal all you can now until we catch up with you! Then you’ll all be f.u.ck.e.d!! – Sarting with Ch.ilub.a

  52. #68, you are right!! We in the opposition should do all we can to help MMD PUT OFF the convention so that we come and run over Nyama Soya in 2011! Fanastic strategy! We should encourage the MMD to self-destruct and split right down the middle as they quarrel over the convention.

  53. There is something Mulongoti is not saying here and some bloggers on th eissue of covention. The thing is why they are not asking PF or UPND to go for a convention its a simple fact. They may not have it in their party constitution and secondly PF and UPND is now a pact and they have agreed to choose a leader for the 2011 election and a committee has been put in place for that particular function of which it has members from PF and UPND on it who will decide who is to stand in 2011. While MMD they have it in their party constitution but because of greed and wanting to hang on to power they dont want to go for the convention. They know Mulongoti who is in nec will lose his job, RB will loose his job & many others in th MMD.Its fear of being jobless and they will stop at nothing to stop it.

  54. These are the same chaps who have all along been busy engineering costly by-elections and now turn around to claim they have no money just because it is them who have to face the voters now, what manner of corwardise it this? By the way, why is Mulongoti’s mouth bending sideways? His metallic gray skin also does not look very healthy, I think he is inflicted with SyphilyTetamash-chomatis. I wonder why they even keen on allowing him to talk about the future which he is not going to see because this SyphilyTetamash-chomatis he is carrying is surely taking him to TetaMalilo, 7 feet under.

  55. OK, so you sir Mr President Rupiah Banda, AKA RB, AKA Kanitundila, said the MMD should be left to debate whether the convention should be deferred until after 2011 elections. Well sir, the report is that you party MMD has no resources to fund the convetion. Can I remind you that, you and your flankies have been flying around the world at the governments’ expense. Even some of your partys’ (MMD) expenses have been funded by tax payers money. Now you’re saying MMD has no money? Get that f.u.c.k outta here man. You don’t want to be challenged, and that’s the bottom line. You know that even some people in your own party are not pleased with the current state of our country. No sir, we the people will continue to speak out until you finally see the EXIT door hit your @$$, you fat f.uc.k.

  56. If Mulongoti and RB are unable to run the party, they should quit. They have failed to raise the money because they are incompetent. That in itself is a resigning matter. However, we know that it suits them to pretend that there is no money. Zambians need to wake up from their slumber. HH is waiting in the wings. He represents the future.

  57. MEMO
Attention: Mike Mulongoti, I have decided to fund the MMD national convention as I have asked donors, companies in Zambia and all wellwishers to help me as they are able to. Please forwad to the LT all your need and send me your budget immediately. My ONLY condition is that I and all who wish to stand must be allowed equal access to campaign to campaign. I shall bring my own delegates as I have offered to sponsor to convention- therefore I must be allowed to bring my own delegates.
I look forward to hearing from you soon. MB

  58. If MMD does not go for convention thats the end of the party, remember the top party carders emo balila, money, matresses etc are distributed at the convention.

  59. Iwe Mulongoti, sponsor namoneka apopamulu, go for the convention next month, no excuse, after all fyonse fya Boma.

  60. nakenangu kayamba bwe !!!bwe !!!bwe!!! teta is gone naiwe u will follow if u continue wasting yo energy talking crap ka mulongoti.

  61. It is not the matter of money that you don’t want to conduct the convention Mr. Mulongoti. There’s alot you want to hide. But remember the name of your part still bears the letter D which stands for Democracy and those refusing to postpone it want to maintain the democracy to the letter. Surprisingly the President is busy talking about other parties that don’t have conventions, wanting to make it common for his party to do away with one this time around. Whenever MMD or those in power want to do anything they have found the money to do it. My wonder now is why they are so reluctant to find the money to hold a convention to get the members’ mandate to lead the party.

  62. MMD has surely become a Branch of UNIP ! Ifyabupuba money is found but when trying to follow constitutional directions money dissapears. Ba Banda you have ruined MMD

  63. There is no need for MMD to go the convention because the circumstances that led to Rupiah Banda to be President are very to all sane citizens. The problems for Rupiah’s government are the people like Mpombo who have no discipline and have now become extensions of the opposition pact working right in the heart of the MMD. MMD must be decisive on Mpombo and Magande – the same way Kavindele lost his political foothold in Kasempa. No one is above the party.

  64. #84 Can you clarify who the party is ? Is it a few individuals drowning the voice of others? You can not victimise the people in your party wanting to take part in the leadership process. I can’t remember in my school days a child being booted out of class for aspiring to be a class captain. Even children know the process of democracy. One of the few times party members have power is their vote. That is the only way you know beyond a shadow of doubt it was the majority who elected the person. Magande /Mpombo want to run give the a chance. Before a big race one has to prove themselves in the small races. That is where they learn discipline, determination, skills and prove their potential.

  65. so undemocratic .. what the crap is going on in Zed, citizens are quiet. What they do with their party is their own crap but we need to get them out of the hot seat in a hurry..
