Economist Oliver Saasa has called on government to intervene and help sustain the operations of the mines.

Professor Saasa says the mining sector is a major source of Zambia’s foreign exchange earnings.

He says any disruption in productivity in mining sector will result in a decline in foreign exchange inflow which accounts for 70 percent of the countrys’ export earnings.

Professor Saasa also called for an expansion of industries that can broaden the base for collecting taxes.

He said in an interview with ZNBC News that government should also invest in sectors that are able to raise revenue which is enough to service both domestic and external debt.

Professor Saasa further praised government for investing in infrastructure development such as roads to facilitate economic growth.

And Trade Expert Gilbert Nkamba says there is need to ensure the mines remain productive if the country is to cushion the kwacha from further depreciation.

  1. Nothing new from the professor. He is simply stated the obvious which us taught in grade 7 basic economics.

    • Finally Prof is saying what we have advocated for here for years. No better Enterprise to run these mines than IDC

  2. Mopani don’t want those mines so government must order Mopani to surrender them back to government. Without politics the problem will be solved.

  3. WHAT NONSENSE!
GOVERNMENT IS FAILING TO PAY SOME SALARIES.
SO, WHERE WILL IT SOURCE FINANCING TO RUN MINES FROM.
IF SOME MINING HOUSES CANNOT RUN THEIR MINES THEY SHOULD HAND OVER TO THOSE WHO CAN LIKE THE CHINESE.
MEANWHILE, HAS THE TAX REGIME ON MINES BEEN RESOLVED OR ARE THE MINING HOUSES SIMPLY BLACKMAILING THE GOVERNMENT OR HAS THE GOVERNMENT FAILED TO FIND A SOLUTION?

  4. The Challenge we have as Zambians is that we think only a man with a light skin and light hair or possibly pink nose can run the mines. I believe even here in Zambia there are capable hands who can run those mines. It actually helps even to retain most resources back into our nation for further development.
Talk of KCM, what developments have they brought to our nation apart from milking our cow and going to nourish India? Same applies to other mines.
