Over 10 Hours of Load shedding to continue until the Kafue Gorge Lower Project is Commissioned-ZESCO

Share

ZESCO will have to continue implementing the over 10 hours load shedding for the rest of this year if the 750 mega watts at Kafue Gorge Lower Hydro Power station does not come on board by the third quarter of this year.

ZESCO Director Generation Fidelis Mubiana says this is because Zambia currently has a power deficit of 810 mega watts with generation standing at 1,372 mega watts against the peak demand of 2200 mega watts.

Mr. Mubiana attributes the deficit of power to inadequate rainfall in the catchment areas that supply water to the major hydro generation plants in the country.

He has told the media in Siavonga today that the Kariba North Bank Power Station, the biggest hydro generation plant in the country with an installed capacity of 1,080 mega watts is only able to generate about 275 mega watts because of low water levels.

He said despite the country generally having received adequate rainfall in the last season, the catchment areas that supply water to Lake Kariba experienced droughts.

And Mr. Mubiana says the Kafue Gorge Lower which was supposed to come on board in the second half of this year was affected by Covid-19.

He said contractors from Sino Hydro had gone back to China for holidays but could not come back after the outbreak of the pandemic that has ravaged the globe.

He however notes that ZESCO has instituted level one lock down at Kafue Gorge Lower to allow those inside continue working and not be exposed to the Coronavirus so that the project is not entirely affected.

The ZESCO Generation Director has also revealed that new projects worth millions of dollars are earmarked for implementation in the northern part of the country because of good rainfall pattern there while noting that solar and wind energy plants are also o
cards.

And Zambezi River Authority Hydrologist, Bob Mwangala said the authority has only allocated 22 billion cubic meters of water to the utility companies in Zambia and Zimbabwe.

He said this is owing to the low water levels currently being experienced which are the second lowest since 1995.

Mr. Mwangala, however, expressed optimism of water levels rising by June coming from areas Zambezi River and the DRC which takes some time.

  3. First of all, you mentioned last year that this project will finish around April/ May this year, now you have changed. Secondly we were told that the increament of the tarrifs were very necessary from 1st January 2020 so as to stop the load shedding and here we are again. We have been lied to before and now we have been duped again. How dull are we that we fall for the same tricks again and again?

  4. Wako – That is the problem with liars …the cover a lie with another before you know it you have a heap of smelly human waste. Victoria Falls is overflowing but Kariba is not full and load shedding should reduce by more than 3/4 but due to corruption and deceitfulness of this incompetent Lazy Lungu regime

  5. Very fair enough. We would rather suffer now in order for long term benefits. No point giving us limited power capacity on the Same infrastructure when the demand is going up due to positive economic growth in the country. I say carry on zesco and work on increasing the capacity. I always look at long term benefits than being short sighted. In order to reap you have to sow and sacrifice. We zambian know that and will not be swayed by some angry diasporans who are more concerned about Zambia out of spite when the I.d.i.ots don’t even live here. You left so go and question your zesco there abroad Haha. Uluse

  10. ZESCO has failed just like the party in power. They have put large bill boards advertising their sub stations in many parts of the country as if their substations are tourist resorts instead of concentrating on issues that will advance their mission. And you can imagine at some point they had Frank Bwalya as a board chairman, surely imwe. How, tell me, can the country move forward, isn’t it the reason the country is down from all human endevours – economy, governance, social, political.

  11. I am very sure soon you will hear that Kariba is not full, and it is HH. But anyway the excuses will run out kabili they have run out ideas already. This line up – Bowman, Davies, Geoffrey,Stephen, Kaizar. To be a leader, there must be a measure of decency. And also don’t expect a square peg to fit in a round hole. MMD die hard to PD die less will always result into boot licking as security of tenure.

  13. Mr. Mubiana attributes the deficit of power to inadequate rainfall in the catchment areas that supply water to the major hydro generation plants in the country, now PF know that catchment areas are very important for that reason everybody should vacate forest 27 without fail.

  14. KZ, Agony with Zesco is yours there, we use nuclear power here – what is load shedding, never experienced here except when in Zambia -Lusaka. When in my district electricity supply comes from a neighbouring country. So, get surprised with all this Kariba water …..etc
KZ insulting well meaning citizens will not insulate you as public enemy of Zambia. You or impostor, Zambians will not forget that you have harassed, beaten, maimed, humiliated, kidnapped, fired guns and shot Zambians and dehumanise Zambians. Zambians deserve justice and time is coming to get it. Cleansing yourself on this site will not wash up, records, living witnesses exist and testimonies will be in your face.

  15. “He said contractors from Sino Hydro had gone back to China for holidays but could not come back after the outbreak of the pandemic that has ravaged the globe.”

That says it all ..the whole project is full of Chinks from top Chief Engineer, Site Agent down to the Foreman, Zambians are mere labourers ..meanwhile in China our brothers and sisters are being evicted for the colour of their …in Zambia all contracts are handed to Chinks and funded by them through the fallable one side EXIM Bank contracts.

  16. What do you expect when PF cadres run zesco!? Failure and excuses are oder of the day. They are just after their stomachs nothing else.

  17. We are are now tired of these excuses from foolish Zesco,Just shut all the machines down until after 2021,then we will have peace since you don`t want us to have power, sometimes in these matters silence is golden

  18. We told these morons to start a solar power manufacturing industry in Zambia……… the best they could do is borrow money and gass our people…….

By now 80% of all house holds and small businesses should have been powered by Zambian manufactured solar power plants

  19. Zesco Zesco managwnt, why don’t you admit you have failed to run zesco.it has been excuse after excuse. Those chineese turbines are heating and have huge water intake. There are other issues with those new turbines and you know. Why can’t you tell zambians the truth.Twachula elyoa twanaka naimwe Ba Zesco..

  20. In the year in which they said to deliver the electricity to avoid loadshedding the rains missed the vital catchment areas therefore for the rest of the year loadshedding will be experienced countrywide? PF never ceases to amuse me, KCM and Mopani are down so who is using too much electricity in the country?

  21. Even after increasing tariffs by 200% which they wanted, they are still failing to provide power 24hrs a day. Might as well go back to the old tariffs.

  22. ” … things are on the cards” That’s been the message for years and years under this regime, with it’s shameless supporters. People are existing now, which ‘future’ are some of you referring to? The promise of electricity in another life?

  23. They got into govt through lies and will always lie as they govern. I wonder what will be left to sonta after Corona is done. Dununa reverse as usual

  24. When I was young I remember watching fat Albert , and one important lesson I learnt from bill Cosby is that its not good to tell lies because once you tell a lie you will spend the rest of your life telling more lies to cover the first lie.HEY!HEY! 25. Zesco management you have really let us down.I think it’s time we find
New investors to buy zesco.you have
    Completely failed.you increased tarrffs,then rainfall,then water levels
    Now kafue gorge.

  27. ZESCO incompetence and lies are catching up with them! Excuses for failure after failure. Zambians have been subjected to three outrageous tariff hikes under the excuse to end loadshedding. The situation has not improved many months down. We just need IMF conditions to reign in Structural Adjustments in ZESCO or best to have it privatized! Better to have a lean and efficient ZESCO than a bloated, incompetent and inefficient one. ZESCO is killing our Economy Softly, slowly but surely! PF cadres are chocking ZESCO. PF must go! They have failed!
