President Edgar Lungu’s directive to extend the date of reopening of schools welcome

Share

Save Lives Foundation President Younus Essa has welcomed President Edgar Lungu’s directive to extend the date of reopening of schools due to the rising COVID-19 cases.

Mr Essa says the move by the head of state deserves support and commendation looking at the risk that would have come with going ahead with the opening of schools amidst the second wave of the pandemic.

He told Smart Eagles in interview that President Lungu has acted in the interest of majority stakeholders who feel opening of schools at this time is not appropriate.

“Let us all rally behind President Lungu and support all the interventions that have been put in place” Mr Essa says.

And Mr Essa has called on all Zambians to treat the pandemic as serious and not as a hoax in order to reduce the number of new infections as well deaths.

“Numbers of new infections are now in thousands and this is a source of worry to all of us and should compel us to heighten social distancing and mandatory wearing of masks” Mr Essa said.

He says all the campaigns against the pandemic should be done holistically in order for the fight to be won.

  1. Finally the current science has spoken, not that PS who talked from the blues, please refer to the current status quo to make decisions where Covid is concerned, mwitalalika bana nobulimi bwakale. However, I think some rural schools\boarding school can be let to open sooner than later and encourage out door leaning as opposed to being crumbled in classrooms with limited ventilation.

  2. Covid19 is not over yet. The second wave is almost here. We need to be cautious and careful. Opening schools would expose children to risk. The decision to delay opening of schools is the most welcome.

  5. Covid19 is not a matter of politics. Some issues are above party politics. Health and safety of people should be paramount. This is the time we stood behind President Edgar Lungu, keeping party politics aside for some time. We can at least do this much!?

  6. This decision is aimed at ensuring safety of our children. The deadly virus is not something we can play with. Not until we get the vaccines and complete protection from the virus.

  9. This decision is not for any individual or a particular family. It is for the larger family called Zambians. It is pity that some crooked politicians are using it for politics. Shame on them.

  10. Now that Mr Essa has spoke in favour of President, the petty opposition will pounce on him. For the people in opposition, politics is everything, they are least bothered even if it means death of innocent children! Pathetic!

  11. What kind of logic is this? Why do you want to expose children to the virus? Though at very low lever now, but rural area too is prone to infection. In my opinion, the schools and especially boarding schools should not be opened until we are completely sure that the virus is in control or till we have vaccine.

  12. This is even more crucial time. With newer strains of the virus coming to fore world over, Zambia needs to be on high alert. It is the good decision to postpone reopening of schools. Can we keep this out of politics please? It is the matter of life and death for poor Zambians, for God’s sake!

  14. It is now observed that teachers are dying with covid 19. Let ministry of health to give us statistics for the most topping ministrise with covid19 mortality so that more precautions should be put in place. Let us be more careful with this air born disease than what happened with AIDS when it started in 1980s when people started contracting the diseas no proper statistics was given according to ministries and precautions came late when number of population had gone.

  15. What miracles will be done to prepare all schools for opening within two weeks? What preparations were done in the 8 months when schools were closed? Not long ago, an Education official or minister directed to postpone the opening of schools from 4th January to 18th January. What preparation for addressing Covid issues were done between 4th and 18th January? Now the president has directed to postpone the opening of schools from 18th January to the 1st of February or is it 13th February? What crush programme will be undertaken within these few weeks to ensure adequate measures are in place to address Covid in schools when they open? While welcoming the decision of the president, there is need for clear actions to take in order to address covid issues at various schools. Lets us avoid…

  16. Only f00ls who support upnd will not appreciate this directive. They think with their tribal backsides rather than using reason.
