The opposition Patriotic Front PF Wednesday afternoon barred journalists from the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation -ZNBC- from covering its campaign rally at the Freedom Park in Kitwe.
Irate PF cadres said they have nothing to do with ZNBC reporters because they allegedly peddle lies against the opposition party and its leader, Michael Sata.
About six unidentified body guards for Mr. Sata wearing tags written PF Security pushed a ZNBC camera person assigned to cover the rally away from the podium where Mr. Sata was sitting.
The PF security personnel ushered the ZNBC News crew away from the rally after a senior PF member identified the team.
The situation was further aggravated when Mr. Sata told the crowd that he was annoyed with a story in the 13.15 hours Radio News bulletin.
Meanwhile, Mr Sata has claimed that ZNBC News aired a false story which alleged that his rally in Kitwe was a flop before it had even started.
But ZNBC News never carried such a story.
At the same rally PF members were seen pushing and forcing a man wearing a European Union Election Observer Mission T-shirt to take photographs of the crowd.
And Electoral Commission of Zambia Director Priscilla Isaac the PF’s action against the ZNBC crew as unfortunate.
Ms Isaac said political parties that are turning away the media from covering their rallies are doing a disservice to the electorate.
She noted that people need to be fully informed on the campaigns being conducted by all political parties.
Ms Isaac says ZNBC News as a public broadcaster should be given an opportunity to cover all political parties in a fair and balanced manner.

That is what Banda National Broadcasting Corporation deserve, they have been to a number of Sata’s rallies but what do they show?something contraly to what was there, let’s not waste time talking about a compromised National broadcaster which only shows rb and mmd caders, chiefs and other bootlickers singing praises to him but chiefs like Mpezeni and Nkomesha can’t be shown because they stand for the truth and are not ready to be used at the expense of poor zambians just to see someone to state house.

I have been a support of ZNBC for a long time and often praising them for the news and information they give. Now given the magnitude of political scenarios Zambia is going through right now, I understand that ZNBC is struggling to balance the political playing field for all political parties involved in this year’s elections and to change how Zambian people are receiving the news from ZNBC mighty be difficult. Lately ZNBC is perceived favoring MMD, hence, I cannot let it go of my understanding that it’s also the job of ZNBC to inform the nation about positive issues opposition parties who are participating in this year’s elections are talking and campaigning about. Such as infrastructure development, education, health, justice, zero tolerance to corruption etc.
continue from # 43 I used to enjoy a good coverage of ZNBC news, but the priorities of coverage lately astounds and frustrates me and many Zambians. Having to hunt for national news buried in the back headlines for MMD makes me question the value of people paying TV fees to ZNBC, because it’s not only MMD cadres and supporters who pay these TV fees but even opposition supporters pay.
Am afraid that ZNBC is giving up its credibility as anything but a mouth piece for MMD rather than a quality national public media station. And this feels like loss for our country and a doubtful recipe for potential violence during and after this year’s tripartite elections coming 20th September, 2011.
Am tired of seeing the ugly old face of RB each ZNBC news comes on , that is why i switch to other channels such as BBC or CNN.
