Hakainde Hichilema

The Following is an open letter that was sent to UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema on 25th October 2011 using the email address on the opposition leader’s website by the author. Due to the lengthy nature of the letter. We shall publish it in two parts. Below is the final part

By M Makalu:-

Sata won Luapula by 73.54% in 2011, Northern by 64.18%. I am sure this is what Mr. Mweetwa called ‘careful’ analysis that makes you conclude that even other candidates receive votes from their tribes. So you take your 71.41% win of Southern province as normal and say, “the regional support given to the UPND is not different from that received by other parties including the Patriotic Front (PF).”

But when I say stop your tribalism, I am not saying start losing in Southern province. That would be dumb. Southern province is your home ground; you have every right to even set the record of scooping it by 100% if you can.

“Stop your tribalism” instead means:

a. Stop talking ONLY to Tongas. Based on how UPND’s support has evolved over the past 10 years, it is clear that you talk only to Tongas. Talk to other regions as well.
b. Stop accepting tribalism ANYWHERE in Zambia.

One Zambia, One Nation , Take the fight to them

You owe nobody no apologies for winning in Southern Province. But as somebody who aspires to be president of Zambia, you all everybody, including Tongas, apologies for only managing to convince Tongas to your agenda.

We are One Zambia One Nation. We are a union of 73 Bantu speaking tribes. (In my dreams, I even wish we were called United Bantu of Zambia (UBZ) so as to keep ‘unity’ on our lips everyday).

This means that ALL tribes have committed themselves to seeing each other as brothers and sisters. This came automatically for people who were there at independence because they shared the same pain and indignity from colonialism. So it was easy for them to embrace each other from Northern to Southern, Eastern to Western and everyone in between.

But to those of us born yesterday, who did not share in the pain, we need our leaders TODAY, to call us to unity just like the leaders then called our forefathers to unity. So you must see the tribes’ commitment to One Zambia One Nation not as something that is fully done and dusted for all eternity, but rather as WORK IN PROGRESS.

[pullquote]But when I say stop your tribalism, I am not saying start losing in Southern province. That would be dumb. Southern province is your home ground; you have every right to even set the record of scooping it by 100% if you can.[/pullquote]

In other words, as somebody who aspires to rule Zambia, your first responsibility is to make sure that that Zambia continues to exist. Zambia exists only as a union so you want to make sure that you work and are seen to work towards making that union more perfect. Unite your Zambia before you rule it.

When your ‘careful’ analysis of election results revealed that you received less and less support from Northen and Luapula, you should have reached out more; you should have talked to them more, engaged them more. You should have taken the fight to them. You should have refused to bow to tribalism. Instead, what you did was, you went back to Tongas, asking them to vote for you more, explaining that the tribalistic Bembas did not vote for you enough.

You then went to Lozis who also share similar anti-Bemba sentiments and brought them on board. It is the reason the ‘tribalism’ mark has been put on your head and not on Sata’s.

Sata also gets his least votes from your region: Southern, Western and North Western. But instead of him going back to Bembas crying for more votes, mind you, the vote of Bembas and associated tribes is twice that of the Tongas and associated tribes’ he reached out more, engaged more. He brought the fight to you.

This is what I meant when I said stop accepting tribalism anywhere. Sata refused to bow to Tongas’ tribalism. And over the 10 years, his support in your regions has seen growth.

[pullquote]From 2001 to 2011, your votes in Northern fell from 8,888 to 2,935; in Luapula from 5,674 to 1,758. Sata’s rose from 790 to 24,609 in Southern; 838 to 43,579 in Western; 275 to 18,790 in North Western and 1,930 to 63,890 in Central. You had a better start in Sata’s territory than he had in yours. [/pullquote]

From 2001 to 2011, your votes in Northern fell from 8,888 to 2,935; in Luapula from 5,674 to 1,758. Sata’s rose from 790 to 24,609 in Southern; 838 to 43,579 in Western; 275 to 18,790 in North Western and 1,930 to 63,890 in Central. You had a better start in Sata’s territory than he had in yours. But because you accept tribalism it has cost you.

In a nutshell, this is what makes you a tribalist while Sata is not. In a union of 73 tribes, you observed that certain tribes did not like you. Instead of reaching out more to those tribes to foster unity, which is a mark of a good leader, you went back to your tribe and ‘woke them up’ to tribal voting. In the end your tribal vote grew so big that it swallowed your national vote. This is what makes your regional support VERY DIFFERENT from that of other political parties: it devours your national vote. At 52% from Southern, you outdid Sata’s 33% from Northen and Luapula combined. You effectively became UPTD (T = Tribalistic) and stopped being UPND.

UPND’s Political strategy Going Forward

The era of the ‘old political folk’ ends with Michael Sata. Everybody wants new blood; young and fresh brains. You are far ahead of the pack amongst all young people who will emerge, be it in MMD or PF. So if you play your cards right, the next election could be yours.

So think about the following:

1.Abandon character assassination

The phasing out of the old political folk is the dying of politics of character assassination. So as you “ensure checks and balances” and “curb government excesses,” avoid attacking Sata’s character. You would be sinking yourself down with him. Like it or not, Sata has been voted for his pro-poor policies. You are committing political suicide if you want to put “checks and balances, and curb government excesses” to that. So adapt!

2.Flow with The Post Newsspaper do not fight them.

Going by your youth wing’s press statement, it appears you feel as if the Post hates you and is jealous of you. I have no comment about that. But the Post is a very important asset to every Zambian politician. It being a private newspaper, its survival depends on its sellability. Meaning that being relevant to Zambians is their lifeblood. So if the Post picks up a certain line of reporting and editorials, know that the newspaper is selling.

Take that line of reporting as the line of thinking Zambians are on. Flow with that instead of fighting it. And for fear of legal action, they make sure their facts are accurate before they publish.

In the event that the line of reporting is against you, like on tribalism, do not be defensive and go on attack against the Post. From now on, your response to tribalism allegations shall not be “M’membe hates HH, M’membe is a trouble maker, M’membe this M’membe that, etc” or “other parties are tribalistic too, including PF” or “we are too important or too big to go in a fight with a newspaper.” When M’membe’s readership hear that, they go, “Guilty, guilty, guilty!” That is not good for you.

So your response shall be, “We are happy with our performance in the 2011 elections. We have emerged stronger as a party. Although, like all Zambians, we are disappointed that we got over 52% of our votes from Southern which indeed makes us appear tribal, since that is where our president comes from. Perhaps it could be that we over spent our campaign resources there to ensure he did not lose on his home ground. As you know in Zambian politics, home ground advantage is key. We have definitely learnt from this, and we will allocate resources better in the next elections.”

In other words, while everybody explains your 52% from Southern as tribalism, explain it as allocation of resources, a planning error or something. From there, assure the Zambian people that UPND is their party. If it did not reach them in 2011, you will make sure it reaches them BEFORE 2016. In publicity, there is a saying, “There is not good or bad publicity.” So use the Post’s “attacks” to your advantage.

3. Have a two-pronged approach to “cracking” the Bemba vote.

So far it appears as if your only approach to winning Bemba support is ‘pacts’ with Bemba parties. Go as far as you can on that front. But in my view, it is highly unlikely for a Bemba party to leave the presidency for you. Can you leave the presidency for a Bemba yourself?

So in addition to seeking pacts with Bemba parties, have a “Bemba Attack Team (BAT).” Launch “bats” on Bembas. Just make sure those bats will include Bembast too. It is an old saying, “Set a thief to catch a thief.” You need this wisdom from where am sitting.

The job description of this team is to reach Bembas before 2016. To reach Bembas NOW. And let this team report directly to you, or somebody just next to you, from their permanent residence in Bemba territory.

Also keep your eyes closely on Nevers Mumba. It is very likely he will swing the Bemba vote. PF, MMD and UPND will all want him. This might be a far cry shot, but to me, Nevers has not been fired; he has been promoted. He is Sata’s successor. Well, even if you disagree, just keep your eyes on him, will you?

4. Have a message for the people.

The major issues of the past election were poverty and corruption. Sata’s message on both of them was “more money in your pockets” and “Don’t kubeba” respectively. You are guaranteed that poverty will still be an issue in the next 3 or 4 elections. So coin a message against poverty, which even the street will understand. Your 5 reasons listed on www.hakainde.com are too many and meaningless to the street. They are for the educated like me. The phrase “real change” is too abstract, only analytical people can listen to such.

If you don’t mind positioning yourself as someone who will build on from where Sata, the people’s popular president, will leave off with pro-poor policies, your poverty message can be: more money in the bank too.

People don’t just want money they can spend, they want to save too. Tell them, “Sata gave you money to spend; I will give you more you will save some.” Or you can just say, “HH For Enough Money.” Enough money for food, accommodation, education, health, travel, etc.

Or you can re-phrase your “food for all” into “No more hunger.” The street understands the latter better than the former. “No more poverty, No more ama broke, etc” are variations.

On corruption, you are trying to spin “Don’t kubeba” to mean ‘a conspiracy within PF where they will run a corrupt government and cover their tracks.” I doubt if this will take you anywhere. Trust me, people know what Donchi Kubeba means.

So just go to the heart of your passion for politics. To me, Mr. HH, looking at news articles on your vuvuzela, the www.zambianwatchdog.com, it is clear that what drives your political career is you hate it that politicians deceive people (especially Bemba politicians who are too clever on their mouths, if I might add). They don’t keep their promises. It is no wonder you are trying to put a ‘conspiracy’ spin on donchi kubeba.

I understand where you are coming from.

As a Tonga, you are deeply aggrieved that your region has not seen as much development as Bemba land. Hence you feel the creation of Muchinga province is “just taking development to the same region;” the same crookedness you want to fight. You are really pieced that your people have been voting for leaders who have ended up doing nothing for them.

Rest assured that this anger is not only in Tonga land; it is in Bemba land too. As a non-Bemba, you might think Bembas are happy because they receive “all” the development. Far from it. The poverty that stripes your people of dignity, stripes Bembas of dignity as well. Can’t you see how Bemba chiefs easily get partisan? Poverty!
So as the pain of colonialism united our fore fathers, the pain of poverty unites us today – Tongas, Bembas, Lozis and every Bantu speaker in our union.

As an aspiring president, show your leadership by finding an inspiring slogan in this widespread anger at politicians’ lies. I give you: “Don’t Kubepa.” Which means, “Don’t lie.” Translate that into Tonga and other languages and off you go.

You are no longer an opposition to “ensure checks and balances and curb government excesses” of a pro-poor government; you are an opposition to “ensure that people’s minimum expectations are met and that government stays true to its people.” You have adapted.

You might ask, “If the government stays true to its people and meets their expectations, won’t that deny me a chance to rule?” No. People will like you that you held the government accountable. You forced government to be true to their word as you rallied people with “Don’t kubepa.” People will see you as their hero as they will see you as having fought for and with them.

Your party symbol is an open hand reaching out for a handshake; make it an open hand ready to receive. But your message is not receiving, it is OPENNESS, TRANSPARENCY, GIVING, HONESTY. An open hand is a blessing. Position UPND as a blessing to the Zambian people.

5. Your priorities.

I only see one actually: Freedom of Information Bill (FIB) and a protective legal framework for journalists at ZNBC who expose government failures. UPND has no mouth piece, so unless you will invest 20 years into a newspaper like The Post, you need ZNBC free from government interference inDEED not just on paper and in rhetoric. So advocate that the FIB happens as quickly as possible, and be of good quality. Also side with journalist groupings seeking a protective legal framework. Commit your legal and money resources to help with ideas in this area.

Every time you open your mouth anywhere and every where, you shall call for these legal instruments. Then step back from the constitution a bit. Wait to see how any new constitution will be received by the church and NGOs before you issue your official position. If you find that a constitution you disagree with is still popular (with the church, NGOs, etc), tell your MPs to vote for it nonetheless. The point is, everybody knows you were part of NCC so there is no “sense” you can say about this issue now.

6. What do you make of Livingstone?

You keep losing in Livingstone while you overwhelmingly win all other constituencies in Southern province, how do you explain that?
My hypothesis is that you lose in Livingstone for the same reason you lose in Copperbelt and Lusaka. The common factor in these areas is that there is a bit of development. This means your developmental message is not getting across. Polish it up.

7. HH until the next election.

Sata is popular, and unfortunately, as the Bible says, “Love covers a multitude of sins.” The strategy of painting Sata evil in the traditional way of criticising and attacking is a non-starter. Forget it. Until the next election, HH must position himself as a leader who fights to make sure Zambians get what they deserve, no matter what. Sata’s promises are good. You may disagree but the people agree. Have a team of people that will compile every developmental promise Sata and PF made: roads, hospitals, money in the pockets, agriculture, etc. Tick off what he implements and use what he does not implement as your ammunition. Quote him and give facts and figures. With your “Don’t Kubepa” slogan, you will inspire masses.

That is about it from me. I remain with the hope that as you seek pacts to earn UPND national support, you will as well form a team of people working on a strategy to achieve just that without a pact (to avoid a repeat of the PF-UPND pact that failed at the eleventh hour). You might need that as you may end up with no choice but to ‘confront’ Bembas on your own. As my statistic on “2011 registered voters and valid votes” shows (see “Additional Statistics”), anti-HH voters (Bembas and associates) are twice pro-HH (Tongas and associates). You need Bembas to have a real shot at the presidency. Creates “bats” for them.

My last words: We are One Zambia One Nation. Tribalism can neither stop you nor take you anywhere.

All the best,

  1. Well HH seems to be getting free information that costed RB so much money in the name of image building from UK thieves. Take it or leave it, you need a bembas from both luapula and nothern on the top of your party. if only Swakwiba Sikota and Bob Sichinga were not kicked, your party would have had a better image  to all of us. never let professor Chirwa go, keep him for eastern power but your waste mistake was to let Sata go

  2. Contnd from above:

The only objective advice you have presented is the UPND to lower the tone of their campaign strategy to the levels of a common man on the street. I will agree with you on this one because it has really been difficult for most of the electorates to decipher the development programmes of the party due to their technicalities in their presentation.

Technically speaking the rest of your paper was written out hatred for the man (HH) and not really with intentions of giving him due advice which is vital for political development and stability.

  3. Also let us always have a long term view & learn from the likes of William Banda, Chanda Chimba and FTJ. You might just find that HH is the next president and then what do you do then? RB, CC, WB etc believed MCS would never be president.

    • i like that (you might just find that HH is the next president) the thing is the big man as know better strategy his good in talking to people in same towns forgetting that even in rule areas there is a lot of people there to give him votes the point is that the big man is one sided

  4. When HH wins in his home area it is called tribalism. Now my question is “when others, other than HH wins in their home areas what is it called?” To be continued …

    • it appears to me that pipo dont know the meaning of tribalism. zambians are free settle whreever they choose to and no one has ever been chased or forced to leave on the basis of tribe. in zambia, our politicians viz the pf have no issues to talk about to the voters hence to continual attacks on pipo with agenda for this nation. it is nowander we are seeing alot of U-turns from the pf campaign message to wat they are doing now. long live UPND

  5. This guy should be a cleaner in the UK and so frustrated with life their. Because i dont see any sensible person with real issues to pay attention to can waste time writing such stuff that does not make sense. And why are so many bembas on this blog hooked so much to tribal slavery. My advice to Makala is that find something meaningful to busy your life with and all the hate you have in your heart will diminish. Makala you seem to have the energy and time, cant you divert it to suggetsing ideas on how to improve education, health, roads etc standards in Zambia . The HH you are wasting your time on is a very successful business billionaire (a Warren Buffet of Zambia) who does not need your advice. In fact i very much doubt if HH has the time to read your articles.

  7. To those who are not good at statistics, don’t get mad over the the content of this article. You should also go to ECZ collect the data and come up with your own analysis. It is either you accept what is presented or you don’t. Don’t forget that ignorance has no defence.

  8. The letter is another attempt to entrench bemba-ism in Zambia. The so called bemba vote on the copperbelt is inter-tribal. Now that PF-Bemba suppoters have the courage to openly show course for the bemba hegmony, HH and the Tongas should soldier on. If it were not for Bemba tribalism, surely, HH is still the best political leader known in this year’s elections. Bemba has become carelless to Zambians: Donchi kubeba is bemba. Barn songs in Bemba in churches outside nothern and copperbelt towns. Mobilize and break the cities’s slams about these matters and come 2016, HH for Zambia. It is people like simenda and inonge kisssing sATA’S SHOES that are making bembas big headed.

  9. Of late I have really become worried and sometimes pained. The fight that has been going on between “Tongas and Bembas” is indeed a trap for our future generation. Is there a way of identifying individuals who are tribalists instead of making a haste generation that Tongas or Bembas are tribalists. I find this kind of language very offensive. I am a very PROUD Tonga who honestly I am not so much a fan of Zambian politics. But going by the current trends of politics in Zambia I become very worried for our children. Allow me to be sentimental. I think the comments that has been going around against the Tongas is a big insult for innocent thousands of Tongas who have no idea about this tribalism issue. But all of them because of one or two persons has been tagged as tribalists …

    • point taken and l do agree with you, our children should not grow up in this kind of hatred, just like you are a proud tonga, l am a very proud bemba/ngoni with alot of tonga mates around me, its a few bad apples in our society trying to bring about havoc, but don,t worry whoever tries it will be brought to book whether they be bemba, tonga or ngoni we shall never allow them

  10. When you get to live outside Zambia, is when you get to know how outsiders appreciate the peace that Zambia enjoys. In the diaspora, we are very proud to be called Zambians because of the reputation that Zambia has enjoyed. But with this character assassination I smell danger. My plea is to those who has the power and influence to write articles like the one above. My question to them is what is there intention? I ask so because i know that such kind of articles form our character and these same articles can  influence people either negatively or positively. I know very well that some pipo like Makalu this what brings food on their tables. but please should you find a living on the expense of many innocent pipo. anyway i’m trying to imagine how this story ends. I sense bad ending.

  11. my brother go back to school…you ***** without wisdom…..look at sata ‘s ministers though they are not educated whole of them ar bambes…..go to hell….***** and stop talking abt HH tok abt ur ass instead

  12. Well Satanism and tribalism is very rafile in Zambia at the moment.Bembas have trully arrived and have no regard to the feeling of other tribes. They are sitting on the time bomb. The struggle for leadership by Bembas started way back before independence ,the Lenshina upraising against KK,the Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe open tribalism is well known to most Zambians, hence i hate with a passion the naming of Ndola airport after Kapwepwe ,maybe if it was Kasama airport renamed after him.Guess what Zambia is bigger than Bembas we shall change all these lanatic names ,hopefully in a few months time ,watch this space .Someone is gravely ill but in denial. We shall rule again ,not thieves, corrupt gangs, grade two in power.

  13. Ka Zanbia kanono sana elyo teti tukwanishe ukupatana. am bemba and l will never look down on a tonga just becos his /she speaks or comes from southern province. As country we are missing it, for me bemba is just the language and not a means. How many tonga men and women are married to other tribes. are we saying their divorce in the name of a tribe, this is rubbish, you politician stop preaching tribalism, just sell you programmes and let the people decide. We all paying the price for what RB sowed when he was telling people not to vote for anyone who does not hail from the east.Lets rise against petty issues and look ahead. Every country has heroes in different form e.g. politician, academicians, sportsmen etc, so what wrong with ndola airport being named simon mwansa kapwepwe.

  14. fact truth @11 It will never ever happen, donchi Kubeba is here to stay, you cannot ban (barn) bemba songs in any part of Zambia.Hon Simenda and Hon Inonge are true Zambians. Come 2016 PF will still win, All Tongas in the country can vote for HH and his tribal party and the rest of Zambia will vote for a true Zambian President for all Zambians regardless of tribe in the mean time Shut up and let HE MSC and his govt do their work

  15. How to spot tribalists; which provinces have the most welcoming and tolerant people?I mean if one had to be posted to a remote village in Zambia e.g for job purposes, which ethnic group will welcome him among themselves and help him inergrate and settle peacefully? If I had a business plan to implement and I have to pick a certain area in Zambia where will I do that without facing suspicion or segregation?Which ethnic group will go to an extent of ignoring you even if you are in the same room?I have used the same anology for how to spot a racist bearing in mind that a racist and a tribalist both share same views.I would appeal to analysts to add some more questions to the list but as for narrow/shallow minded people on this blog, sorry I have no time to think like you.

  16. One must have a lot of time to waste to read this tribal letter. This letter must be ignored. The writer chooses to drag us and bring us into his stupid fights with HH. I’ve failed to waste time finishing it but it’s a lot of bullshit. The stupid owner and tribal author must grow up.

  17. Firstly I’m shocked to know how an article as independent as this one can attract so much negativity. Some people like 90 days going going are really hell bent at making tribal remarks. I think the article has been fair I wouldn’t say that there’s a lot of new themes introduced, neither can I say that I’m shocked with the lack of depth.
But I’m rather shocked with people who would like to make the tribal links at every corner, people should understand that cosmopolitan cities/provinces such as Lusaka, a bit of Copperbelt and Livingstone vote in the manner they do because they do not vote for tribes. I for one voted for PF not because I’m bemba but because I wanted to vote out MMD. And there have been numerious time that I have voted against PF.
    :((

  18. The “open letter” has some very good points to consider. If you do not critically analyse your failures and your opponents’ successes, you will go nowhere. I hope HH will do some deep searching, why is UPND losing ground since Mazoka? It cannot be because HH is Tonga, Mazoka was Tonga too but his outreach was truly country wide. We should not waste time mourning about “tribalism”, yes, if it a hindrance, lets devise ways of defeating it rather than throwing insults at other tribes. That will not help.

  19. Be wise in the approach and help HH win elections instead of being negative in everthing. You’re just depriving him by sending negative comments. What can be your advice if all this is nonsence? What can he do to win? Am Bemba but i like HH, so stop negativity and start being positive and he can win the said vote. Let us help him please.

  20. This article is a true reflection of the thinking of a typical bemba. I am glad that the author has offered useful advise to the UPND management team on how to tackle bemba tribalism. My advise to the author and our bemba colleagues is that they should start seriously reflecting on their own tribal inclination instead of trying to shift the blame on others. They are now in power and we are all watching their every step. If you appear to be big headed, as seems to be the case of late, then the other tribes will gang up and defeat you. Zambia is not Zimbabwe were one tribe dominates others. As pointed out by the author, PF did not win because of the bemba vote but because other tribes including tongas voted for them. This is my free independent advise( I am neither tonga nor bemba).

  21. I must admitt that I am impressesd with the author’s honest attempt to offer constructive criticism. It would be nice for people like him to join UPND and offer such advise from within. I think HH wants to work with bembas but unfortunately they don’t want to work with him because they prefer to support their own. This attitude should change if we have to build a united Zambia. It is also wrong for some people to claim that UPND has been declining since the death of Mazoka. UPND performed better in 2011 than they did in 2006. Any honest person knows 2006 was a challenging year for the party so it was inevitable for them to perform badly.

  22. Zambians this article is correct.be fare.Just like i said sometime bak that MMD must go and Sata must come in.my view is that UPND this is very important for u to go and digest.I also stand on the view that SATA shld not be floated as presidential candidate in 2016 if we are to be objective.its time for young ones.He has already liberated us from the wrath MMD.

  23. People voted because they wanted change and they voted for the one they wanted to be in state house.Change was inevitable and people had to choose the one they believed would implement their expectations.People with a problem need to listen to RB’s farewell speech may be that might help.I don’t consider myself as belonging to a tribe but a Zambian.I have a different mindset.I grew up on the copperbelt where life was very cosmopolitan. That explains why the copperbelt usually determines who the next president would be.For you village mentality characters ,you need to leave those toilet seats and move on with the dynamic Zambian culture.Isolate yourselves and you will slowly become a very small minority until you become an extinct species.

  24. If you want to know which provinces are tribalistic, check post 19. Or visit all the 9 (10) provinces of Zambia. If you have never been to the three-quarters or all of these provinces, do not comment because your knowledge is limited.

  25. HOLA @”27 l have no idea why LT has given me a canadian flag, l am in north-west London mate, we need to arrange a meeting for all zambians to start something to bring our people together, No tribalist allowed 1 zambia 1 nation

  26. There are some good points in this article; HH should not give up on Luapula, Copperbelt and Northern becuase he thinks they dont like him or are tribalists. He should find a new strategy to woo voters in these provinces. No Zambians are inherently tribalists its usually politicians who spraed the flames of tribalism. You win elections by fighting for those areas where you are not popular. Even in the USA there are states that favour republicans and those that support democrats; to win one must pick up as many votes in the those areas instead of sitting back and saying they dont like me.

  27. A very good ppiece of advice. BAUZE Va NVELE amambala aba! Simply attract everyone like every ruling party has been doing. You need every zambian to be a President.

  28. HH THAT WAS A FREE GOOD ADVICE YOU SHOULD TAKE ON BOARD. SUCH LITTLE ADVICE IS IMPORTANT SO TAKE THAT ON BOARD IF YOU WANT TO BE PRESIDO ONE DAY IN ZAMBIA……REMEMBER SATA IS THE LAST OF THE OLD PEOPLE WHO WILL RULE ZAMBIA NOW.

  29. M. Makalu’s message to HH, cannot be limited to HH alone. I would like to extend it to all young serious aspirants for the leadership of our beloved Zambia. Sata today you tomorrow.

Charles Milupi, Elias Chipimo Jnr, Edith Nawakwi, Mutati and others we read about in the papers, take this message as it applies to your situation. I hope you picked up something from Field Ruwe’s advice as well. Don’t be too proud to listen. “ONE ZAMBIA! ONE NATION!”.

  30. hh is more like a subject to all zambians for you all politicians lean same thing please so that when H E P micheal chilufya sata goes we have you as a mature president thing same thing to show zambian people

  31. I strongly Believe this is free advise to UPND members who are genuine and want the party to progrsss in politcial circles in zambia. Most of the issues brought out by Makalu are true and indeed the leadership of UPND should serious find time to analayse the advise from this gentle man. Its a timely warnning for sure!

  32. It is actually amazing to observe that the Southern province has produced the highest number of would have been possible Presidents of Zambia.

Trust me, I have lived long enough to state that: Harry Mwanga Nkumbula, Vernon Jonson Mwaanga, Anderson Kambela Mazoka and like it or not Hakainde Hichilema, M.Makalu’s subject, all had a chance of leading Zambia at one stage or another. Reasons for failure to reach plot one are various. VJ tops all the mentioned but for the drugs scandle which ruined him. Tribalism would never have stopped VJ. Ask Alexander Chikwanda.

  33. HH can learn something from the advice given in the article. In earlier elections Sata, like HH focused only on four provinces in his campaigns. He got the same predictable results. Like they say you can’t do the same thing over and over and expect different results, it’s insane. It’s possible for HH to garner support in PF strongholds if he changes strategy as suggested by the article. Lets also stop the tribal finger pointing. It doesn’t do us any good. This is extremely funny. We are the most tribally mixed people on the continent and it’s probably the reason we speak so openly about each other. In countries where tribalism is a serious problem and a source genocide conflicts, the hate we splash on these blogs would have ignited a holocaust already in those countries.

  34. I find the article sophisticated tribalism articled by sophisticated pf tribalist bent on eliminating HH and upnd. Your bemba tribe as u proudly state, will be challenged on a not tribal platform. HH is a politician who has never campaigned and will never campaign on tribal lines. If the author can be genuine and make sense he shud join UPND in N/P then campaign hard in bembaland for HH OTHERWISE it’s yet again hate essay against one tribe by another.

  35. you are a time waster, you think we have time to waste on such useless analysis…find something better to do instead of wasting your time

  36. As the bible says, wisdom is to wise while to the unwise it is foolishness. If HH doesn’t take this advise then he is fighting a loosing battle. As to you #8, Keke, having more money is not a sign of wisdom.FYI GBM and Bwalya Chiti have more money than HH. But that doesn’t mean they can make good leaders. To lead people you need wisdom. That is why King Solomon asked for wisdom from God. Makalu is not the first guy to have advised HH. Unfortunately, the man perceives every good advise as either an attack on him or useless. He further goes on asking whether the person advising him is richer than him. And if he were to respond to this, he would say “Makalu is hungry, come and get a cow.” I find this analysis to be 99.99% correct and worthy millions of Kwachas just to be given like that.

  37. Bembas are the most triblists and the author of this article is a triblist for he wants Nevers Mumba to succed Sata in 2016. But i want to assure him that it will be a different ball game in 2016 if Sata fails to perform.

  38. Thanks to all the forward minded Zambians who have commented on this article most of you have contributed positively & too many thanks to the author also for taking your time to advice HH. I personally think there are alot of good things that can be leant from your article. HH remember the our traditional proverb, “maano alazwa mukasumbwa” ( wisdom come even from small things). Am humbled & my salute goes to all progressive Zambians. Remember One Zambia One Nation is not for sale. God bless Zambia.

  39. just realised, any comment with + be it 1 is ‘worthy’ a  read through. it actually
helps me go through  most blogs quickly.

  40. I don’t understand why us people like to burry our heads in the sand. The author was quoting figures from ECZ but you still think he’s manufacturing statistics. I feel this is sound advice to the UPND. And for sure Nevers Mumba will be a factor in the next elections. The UPND message needs to get to the streets.

  41. It seems the writer of this article is outside the country and has no ear to the ground. mazoka was a very good leader but never got votes from Luapula and Northern despite having a vice president from northern Robert Sichinga. Robert had to contest a seat in Kafue and won because he knew that his people could not vote for him as he joined a part which was not headed by a bemba speaking person. Robert sensitised all Bemba speaking people to leave UPND but still could not join Sakwiba because he is Lozi and non-Bemba speaking. Facts with bembas are that a non-Bemba speaking person should only join them and not to form a party, and when you join the the way Inonge and Lubinda have done you become a saint, but the day of leaving you are called names like tribalist, we know all thse things

  42. In the previous elections HH spent most of his time campaigning outside southern province and some where even saying he did not care about them the way Mazoka did. HH never wins in Livingstone because it is a cosmopolitan city like Lusaka where people’s needs are different, and not conservative. Sata gained much support in Livingstone because many people wanted improved conditions of service from lodge and hotel owners, even some UPND guys supported PF, but you bembas do not appreciate, where you even call those people tribalist even after voting for you. Many UPND supporters felt they needed to remove MMD and opted to vote for PF as the only party which had the capacity, but have abused them by calling them tribalists.

  43. PF should thank HH for not accepting to form a pact with MMD, as the combination of PF and MMD could have blocked the victory of PF.

  44. Pipo, this gentleman has given us his opinion and from wat i av read from this letter this guy took time to research. Pls don’t critises wen u avn’t done any research or any thinking for that matter. An opinion is an opinion DON’T AGUE. But the writer shud also take care not to bring un constructive issues to the public.

  45. hh can want to embrace Bemba speaking tribes BUT HE IS CAGED BY TONGA LOYALISTS AND HE FEELS IMPRISONED.
HH please organise provincial and district committees of UPND HEADED BY NEUTRAL PEOPLE AND NOT LIKE CURRENTLY ARE HEADED AND DOMINATED BY TONGAS. This will give u a good start to 2016.

  46. Bo Mundia @ 51,52,53 You are talking rubbish and you are the one trying to bring up tribal tension. A TONGA can be Zambian president but not HH,GBM the defence minister has more money than HH, but you don,t see PF changing rules to accomodate him, HE MCS is our leader because we chose him. Zambians take VJ as a Zambian not a tonga, had it not been for the drugs VJ would have been chosen over Chiluba or Mwanawasa…. HH is not presidential Material, he is a good farmer and businessman, but those not leadership qualities. Nevers Mumba can never win an election in Zambia no one trusts him. Sata should not even try and contest 2016, Its time PF got behind young Given Lubinda 1 zambia 1 nation

  47. Most of the time it is hard to accept unfavorable diagnosis. But whether we want to accept or ignore the diagnosis does not make the “tumor” growing in the pit of our tummy go away. Why people like to pretend things are well when they are not is beyond me!

UPND can deny and pretend things are fine and engage in simplistic explanations of why their political fortunes keep dwindling, but facts will remain facts. UPND under Mr. Hichilema has not performed well. We can cite tribalism until hell freezes over, but that does not change the fact that since the death Mr. Mazoka UPND has only done well in Southern Province………..

  48. continue:

Even in areas earlier thought to be fertile grounds for UPND, e.g. NWP, UPND has continued to lose ground. All this can’t be explained away as a simple case of Bemba Tribalism.

If UPND wants to perpetually stay in the opposition, let them continue on the course they are currently on. Sata won because he did well (not very well, but good enough) in areas that are traditionally not PF’s turf. And the trend for ten years now has been that PF never gave up the fight for these areas. Take for instance Eastern Province, by next elections PF is likely to be the most popular Party in that region. But it has been the opposite with UPND, why?! This article is very good “food for thought” for MR. HH and UPND!

  49. the ***** who wrote this was probably advised by the kolwestan pfost pares..hahaha..useless analysis..*****..go to hell..

  50. NO Kolwestan can support any other tribe..they are selfish and the worst tribalists..tongas and other ‘bantu’ tribes should join hands with the lozi and separate from these kolwestans ,together they can produce a president for the bantustan region.

  51. Kenya`s rankings on standards ranks 27 in the world——yes! not in Africa, in the whole world. And yet our Universities can even make it the 69 best universities in Africa. Rwanda is the cleanest country in Africa. These are the issues we should be debating not how a tonga cant be president—-please this is 2011! Sadly, most of the useless comments against tongas are coming from Zambians in the diaspora—–people who should be encouraging civil and sensible debates. No wonder one Western described Zambians as being weird because they are so negative to each other and have an inferiority attitude towards foreigners. Ha-ha-ha- ha- i can hear my son in the back telling wife that dad is very smart! Good day and lets learn to appreciate each other.

  52. Thank you all for your comments. I have forwarded a link to ba LT where you can download the whole analysis document. Clearly, without the tables, graphs and charts that led to the extract analysis above, you have been denied a great deal of info.
This report is my attempt to bring reason, facts and figures, to the tribalism debate; which up until now has been based on the illusion of “being hated” by others. Statistics hate nobody, so if we let them speak, we will all get proper perspective on the matter.
So please, when that link is published, download and read the whole report, tables, charts and graphs. Even if you disagree, at least you will disagree with facts and figures rather than just the illusion of hatred.
Once again, thank you all for your interest and comments.

  53. @62 Monde…….Why do you want to call people Kolwetan, your brother shagged, your mother to produce you, its the incest in you insulting other people because your same brother who shagged your mum to make you,is now shagging your ass..what do you call this man dad/brother is that why you want to hide in the BRE to hide the incest in your clan…We shall deal with you when the time comes, pile up stones while we buy arms…HE MCS Chief in command of our forces is a Kolwe to you, Hon GBM defence minister is a kolwe to you..Wait till these people you call Kolwes come and ran you out of Zambia

  54. Never say never, one will be shocked time wen hh gets to state house. Who knew sata will make it? There is time for everything. Bemba’s are the waste tribalist in zambia, it is the reason why they keep on with this stupid tribalsist issues. Such stupid atticles will divide zambia.lets stop it and concetrate on the 90 days programe.

  55. #Tondolo Tumfwe, if you are brainwashed by pf, leave us who are able to think independently to reason. GBM was MMD when Chiluba was in power, and the difference with PF is that it is a one person party Sata. All of these were just jumping on a wagon whose direction they did not know. Adoption were done at Sata’s house, is that democracy. VJ is loved because he has never opened his own party but just joining other parties although the man has no moral standard in society as he is after jobs. GBM is so pompus, in 2001 when hs stood in kabwata he lined all his cars to show that he has money, but Given Lubinda still beat him. We cannot miss good leadership in pf just because of Madyenkuku and Mwanajidi who produced certain words about HH when mazoka died and these are not even in UPND.

  56. The article was carefully written by a stupid person who insists fakely that HH and UPND are tribal when it is well known that tribalists are those people who are rejecting the UPND manifesto just because HH is not Bemba.

For HH and UPND, continue being steadfast and make sure your Real Change message reaches all parts of Zambia especially the cheated Bemba by Bemba-hegemonists.

UPND must continue to prepare for all coming by elections and the 2016 tripartite elections because PF is at it’s weakest level now.

  57. @I meant we cannot afford to miss good leadership in HH despite the man being full of success, just because of Madyenkuku and Mwanajidi who produced certain words about HH when Mazoka died. We should also be fair to analyse these words independently by considering the people who claim to have heard those words from these people, we should ask ourselves where these people agrieved or sober? when people’s tempers are high they can say anything against others even if they are inocent. HH is one person who tries to speak every language in zambia while others can start a campaign and finish it in their own languages Bemba. Us Lozis are separating because of being looked down by others who say no Lozi, Tonga, North-westerner can be a president. Bembas are selfish, viva Barotseland.

  58. I THINK THIS WEBSITE IS NOT SENSITIVE TO PEOPLE’S FEELINGS AND IF THERE WILL BE INCREASED INTER-TRIBAL FIGHTING AND WAR IN THE COUNTRY, THEY HAVE TO BLAME AND PROSECUTE OWNERS OF THIS SITE.

  59. Mazoka finished his education in northern zambia, and was able to speak Bemba well, but when he formed his own party Bemba speaking people did not vote for him as they said if you join this party you will speaking fitundu, but we never made it an issue. Facts are that all non-Bembas know that Bembas hate you when you form your own party and will never support you, but will love you if you join their own parties for them to use you. HH has been in politics for just close to 6 years, and many are just getting to know him, before many knew UPND as mazoka, and many have now gained so much confidence in him, watch him in 2016. UPND is not ready to change leadership and HH will be there till 2016, hate him or love him.

  60. HH should pay Maurice for this well anticulated friendly advice and warning. Keep it up Maurice we need more analysis from you. I liked reading your article. Thanks a lot.
We may accept a Tonga president one day but we certainly don’t need HH. We don’t hate tongas but maybe we don’t like HH either.

  61. UPND president-Tonga, Vice-presidents Fransis Simenda- Lozi, Ben Kapita – North-westerner, secretary general Chibwe – Bemba, where is the tribalism, are all these Tongas or belong to different tribes. The only problem is that it is headed by a non-Bemba and supported mainly by non Bembas. Anything supported by these tribes is considered tribal. Emmanuel Kasonde in 2001 wanted to stand on Gender for zambia party of Mbukusita Lewanika, but Sata discouraged him saying it is a tribal party, you will be speaking Fitundu. Bembas we know these things, when we reamin silent its because we want to analyse things perfectly, but now we have made our conclusions. MMD will be supported by all Bembas under Felix Mutati, and not under Brian Chituwo or Micheal Mabenga. Watch this.

  62. If you ask anyone, tell me why you hate HH, they would say nothing. They want HH out because they know he has gained popularity, and is likely to win them in 2016. Okey, never worry hate HH but love Charles Milupi still they do not want him because he is Lozi. Do not bother about HH Charles is the best we are offering in 2016 since you say HH is tribal, but you still say Chipimo is better for you. You say HH has no political experience, now how about Charles, you hate him, for Chipimo he also has no political experience but it does not apply to him because he is Bemba, come on guys, we are not fools. Chipimo like HH has never been even a mayor of councilor but he is favoured. Milupi has all the political experience and was MP for Luena, but is hated because he is Lozi.

  63. Sweet coat HH and Chipimo how you like they will never win the zambian presidency, we have Given Lubinda next . PF is going to improve its base for the next ten years

  64. @72, the problem is you are too dull.what is wrong with this website? If one is a tribalist he/she is tribalist.Dont blame this site and the arthur is not a tribalist. The problem is that us zambians always want to exaggarate issues even when we know very well that the debate is meant to increase knowledge for some that may be illiterate on certain issues. The author is clear on his points and if i were HH i would take time to analyze no matter how rich he is.He’s probably reading all comments by now and people are stupidly fighting when maybe he is already at work because of this article.

  65. Here is a sober analysis…Firstly its only human nature that if a candidate in an election has not been to a certain regional to market him/herself then people won’t know such said candidate! However, if all candidates have never marketed themselves but come election time people will come and vote and when the electorate look at the ballot paper what they see are names and chances are people are inclined to vote for a name they can relate to…this point is very relate to the rural vote. Bottom line UPND need to rebrand or get rid of HH! that is if UPND what to get to Plot One.

  66. These hijackers even had a meeting well publicized in a town in southern province to find a Tonga replacement of Mazoka. This group went as far as suggesting name such a Mutinta Mazoka (late Mazoka’s Wife) or bringing in Leonard Hikaumba (Trade Union guy) thats how tribal the UPND became! At which enter an young opportunist Hakainde Hichilema (next page)

  67. What Mazoka (& the original UPND) had done was transcend beyond tribal politics and assemble a brilliant group of people to lead Zambia. Good men i.e. Sakwiba Skota (back then) and Patrick Chisanga (both Veeps) these men for many months were at the helm of UPND when late Mazoka was ill making sure the UPND stood firm and grow! And when Mazoka died a bunch of Tribalist came in and sweep these men aside to impose HH on tribal lines. Come time for the UPND convention these tribalist hijacks had sweep through Southern Province calling for a Tonga President that many of my Tonga countrymen traveled to the convention to ensure HH carried the day. at the Convention blows and there will be blood was proclaimed if HH didn’t not become party president poor Saki stood no chance… (next page)

  68. It was at this point that the UPND moved from being national party to regional party. Saki, Patrick and many other UPND members who built the party from nothing sacrificing time and money, going through villages and sleeping in huts…thier leadership qualities, contribution, calibre and integrity was belittled to be replace on tribal grounds by HH unknown or unheard of in the UPND ranks in the sense of aspiring to any political office not even as a MP! HH has never distanced himself from being elected on tribal lines becoz that is the fact. Way forward UPND get rid of HH and rebrand (hold convention) two wrongs dont make a right by claim all parties are regional! for UPND this is the elephant in the room that you wanna ignore and that is why HH is product hard to sell to rest of Zambia!

  69. Lubinda for 2016,with a bantustan name??? that will be the exit of pf because all kolwestans will vote for a non bantu.

  70. I wonder how much development Zambia would experience if all the above narrow minded people would channel all their hatred for another tribe into something positive.I don’t know about others but what my education has done to me is the ability to reflect on the issue without any prejudices.Look at the matter from all angles before you make conclusions.

  71. This article is really illogical, nonsensical and highly tribal by one who attacks another as being tribal. If it means HH & UPND remaining in opposition because they are having an honest campaign, so be it!

  72. #84 Bo Monde with that flag you should know better than to call another human being a monkey. You are in a civilised society so act like one!

  73. Charliewei you are right. I know Tongas will insult in a few minutes time you for telling them the truth of the matter. I end here!

  74. I am very saddened by the retoric of some zambians, who donot understand what it means to be created in the image of GOD! Man has degraded very much even lower than the animals’ level today because of such thinking. If animals can live in harmoney with each other, what more human beings who are created in the MAKER’S image? Who am I to look at others (people) as being nothing? This is a direct insult to GOD who so it fit in reproducing HIMSELF into man.PLEASE NO TRIBE CREATED ZAMBIA FOR THEMSELVES, NO! If any of had power to create life, you would have killed others, and then create your own the way you wanted them. Please stop polluting the future of zambia with such poisonous thoughts from any zambian!
    It is sad indeed!

  75. Now I believe when it is said that to hide information from an African put it in writing. Even with the fact laid before your eyes you still insist that the article is useless. You must be those dull scholars who bought their way into college or University through linkage. The Author has laid bear his facts to see and cogitate over, alas you are all over shadowed by tribalism such that you fail to read between lines. It is surely heard to teach an old dog new tricks,Great Greek werenot heard in their life time but we the latter generation have come to understand their teachings & labled them Heroes.Truely information is power only those with a will understand its power. RB had a degree but failure. What ever he touched went sour. No wonder he retired to his farm to churn over his failure.

  76. the people who are tribalistic are bembas. they like labelling other tribes as being tribalist. if they are not why do they keep on saying that no tonga or lozi will ever be president of zambia.

  77. 2016 no Bemba in state house ,we shall make sure we vote on tribal lines and we shall see that Chipimo of your can get LP,NP votes maybe LP and CB a bit thats all you have gone too far you tribalists calling us names for voting your thug in state house ,how i wish for a by election so that we can recall and dismiss all Bemba appointees.Wanya!

  78. #Charlewei, I told you that if you do not want HH, then we are sponsoring another credible leader in the name of Charles Milupi. i wonder why many of you keep saying 2016 is for Chipimo when you are rejecting HH on basis that he has no experience, considering also that has never held any GRZ port folio what makes him different. Let us all go for Milupi now for a change if you do not want HH. Some of you wanted Saki to leader UPND so that you could finish him off the way you have reduced his ULP after making a pact with him and poaching his members like Lubinda, Mtonga etc. When he left your pact you insulted him like a dog, now you hate HH because he is difficult to finish off as he is a tough man and principled not like the Siulapwas you manipulate everyday for jobs.

  79. The truth is that whether some bloggers like it or not HH is gaining popularity day by day and he is the biggest threat to PF at the moment. Despite a media blackout in the last elections the man managed to win more than half a million votes and increased the number of MPs for his party. He managed to increase his royal political base, these are voters who will vote for him come rain or sunshine. With a little change in political strategy, as pointed out by the author, he will be in state house come 2016. HH just needs to focus on the urban voters and Mr Makalu can make a good adviser for him. If you truly and honestly believe in adding value to his campaign, Mr Makalu, I suggest you make contact with the UPND management.

  80. This is fake – it is not true but just a fabrication by the author because we have heard what HH has advocated, nonsense.

  81. Maurice Makalu (Author): I have just read the first part of your article and to be honest with you, you are a twisted tribalist. You want to twist facts just to satisfy your tribal inclinations. The truth is that most bembas are tribalists who try to cover up their tribalism by branding others as tribalists. You have a tendency of ignoring numerous naked tribal pronouncements from your own leaders like Sata and GMB while trumpeting minor remarks from others. You have so far succeeded in using your vuvuzela(the Post) to spread your tribal agenda but you better take note because the rest of Zambia is catching up with you. How many prominent bembas have condemned Sata’s tribal cabinet? How many of you have objected to the appointment of the tribalist GMB as minister?

  82. Maurice Makalu (Author): Why did I call you a twisted tribalist? Because your so called analysis is narrow minded, simplistic and with tribal massaging tendencies. You are taking numbers(election results) by face value without analysing the historical and human factors associated with such voting patterns. To begin with Northern province is different from S/P in a lot of ways. The tribal groupings in S/P have always been united while there has been some rivalries amongst tribal groupings in N/P. This is reflected in the voting pattern. C/B is dominated by bemba speaking people and historically the people there have always supported presidential candidates who hail from the Northern part of Zambia.

  83. Lusaka is another city that got bembalised under the Chiluba days and this combined with Sata’s pro socialist message which mainly appeals to the poor helped PF win.
Though L/stone is in S/P, most of it’s inhabitants are not tongas. Easterners and Westerners form a large part of the population and that explains why lozi and Nyanja are the main languages spoken there. With this fact, it is no wonder MMD performed well.

  84. Mmembe has presidential ambitions and he sees HH as his main opponent so there is nothing HH can do that will earn him positive publicity in the Post newspaper. If you have been following political events then you will realise that there has been a battle going on between Mmembe and HH over the control of W/P. Mmembe, whose mother hails from W/P, wanted to claim the territory from UPND through his auntie Mrs Inonge Wina. This is the genesis of the term Bantustan. It all started during the Luena bye elections last year when PF and UPND, as pact partners, crushed over which party had the right to field an MMD. This prompted Gay Scott to write an article in the post accusing UPND of treating W/P as their Bantustan.

  85. There is much more I can write about to challenge this fake analysis if the owners give me the platform to do so. Trying to explain away complex political issues using the imaginary ‘HH tribalism’ is lazy intellectualism.

  86. The Post had fooled Zambians at every chance.
There are many reasons why the Post has changed its spots when doing editorials on MCS.
    MONEY MONEY MONEY.

The Post is not the feelings of the people and will never be 100% truthful.
It has an agenda to help itself.
Not to sell papers but top manipulate facts and lie so much until it becomes believable.
Let it go back to 2006 and report like it used to on Sata.

Half of the Post management now works at State House.
Something very fishy is going on and it will take 5 years for Zambians to get over Sata’s destruction of the Constitution.
Hiring and Firing every week of ministers.
Accusations of Gold stealing without Facts.

Tonga’s are the smart ones. Pity the rest of you are so stupid not to see what the Post has done.

  87. Ndekalombe kamuduze. Kamana kuyabiila ingombe zyilalinyoona kumalomo. Waala wala mwana abaama. Alimwi eka 2 wanumba fili ngwabujaka. Someone mentioned Harry Mwanga Nkumbula and am glad he did not say much cos he knows the patriotizim of real Zambians with a tongue sweet as honey and milk. #104 I hear you. You will not say much that will open those “pipo” minds.\:d/

  88. Livingstone is such a dynamic town, it was a capital of zambia and as you know many people migrate to the city for jobs, while the people surrounding the city Tongas and Toka-leyas who develop it are not town people, but prefer to stay in farms for their farming and livestock. It is funny, once you leave the city, the language changes to Toka. Tonga and Toka-leyas are the most accommodative people in zambia as evidenced from this fact. Chief Mukuni has added value to the face of Livingstone, but you only see him in the city only on special occassions, and when he is carrying out his developmental projects. Zambians we have to commend where it is worth. Sata can win inside the city because it is cosmo, but outside is for HH and Banda as people believe in farming and livestock.

  89. Zed Patriot (and others), please write your analysis. We need it too.

Open your Microsoft Word and do your analysis; email it to LT and it will be published.

I bothered to analyse election figures to RISE ABOVE some people’s illusions that they are hated. The illusion of “being hated” can be so pervasive that some have even declared, “God hates me. What wrong have I done to Him?”

I thought that since statistics hate no one, it would be wise to let them speak. But again, that is MY analysis. Do YOURS as well, from FACTS and FIGURES, and NOT from the illusion of hatred, jealousy, etc. We will all benefit from your vibrant intellectualism.

    Thanks for your enthusiastic comments.

    • What makes HH a Tribalist? is it me a Bemba who voted for him?

I also personally think your article threatens the peace & stability of this nation. You must always try to have a long term perspective of any issue. Just becoz Zambia is peaceful doesn’t mean it remain so forever.

Right now we Bemba’s are being setup for some major fallout against the other 71 tribes in Zambia.

  90. Tribalistic crap by the author. Sorry, only your fellow tribalists who are seeing specks in the eyes of the Tongas and not the Logs in their own eyes are agreeing with this warped analysis.

  91. Looking at the number of comments. H H is still a factor to many people. He just need to implement the free advise given. HH should quickly sign Nevers Mumba to his Team as Vice president. Look at the world of football how they sign players who can win them the league.
Pride does not help.Just sign Nevers and a few other Tribes in your mid field HH then 2016 is yours. But, the real threat is Elias for NAREP not Nevers it is like comparing Ronaldo to Beckham respectively.

  92. UPND & PF tribal parties…MMD are Corrupt Party…the rest we don’t give a shit! HH is a tribalist president in waiting, Sata is a tribalist president in power, RB didn’t give a f*ck as long as there good nigga living “castle na mbuzi”

  93. This article has to rank tops among the most uselss pieces of literature I have ever had the misfortune to land my eyes on. We, being mortals that we are, are all burdened with prejudice; against the poor or the rich, the smart or the slow, the gaunt or the obese or indeed those different from us by way of gender, race or tribe. It is natural to develop prejudices. It is noble to rise above them. That any human being in this era would go to such great lengths to cover up his bigoted prejudices, clear chains forged by ignorance to keep men apart, is sickening. Before smearing HH with your rot, please cleanse thyself of your own stench first.

  94. Every tribe in Zambia is a minority and let no one claim that Bembas are a majority in this country, far from it. Therefore, being the wholesome minority that we are, we will only “arrive” when we have the right to produce some fools and scoundrels without the entire group paying for it. Therefore, in overcoming prejudice, working together is even more effective than talking together. To this end, please ignore this ignore this Makalu’s tribal acrobatics, he is a fool and he will sink you to his level and beat you with experience.

  95. Wise advise! HH is still a young man & needs some advise. Unless somebody is blind, we need to see that HH has made, and unfortunately continues to make some political blunders. He needs to b corrected

  96. It is said the when pointing an accusing finger at someone you will always find 4 fingers pointing at you. I’m a Bantustan from the proud Bemba people & find HH wrongly accused. HH has never been captured on TV uttering any on the stuff. The analysis is based on the arthors imagination and Fred M’embe’s hallucinations. I suggest that Journalists should have a Q&A with a subject before making such conclusions.

HH be the better man you are & ignore these sentiments. The people on the ground have already started complaining & regreting that they voted for the wrong change!!

  97. Maurice Makalu (Author): I am more than willing to debate with you or any other Zambian on the issue of tribal voting pattens in Zambia but I must point out that I find it wholly irresponsible and utterly disgusting to accuse a person or group of people of being tribalist for no justified reason. We live in a world were prejudice against any person/s is no longer tolerated and many countries around the world are passing laws that discourage such tendencies. In Zambia it seems to be fashionable to call someone a tribalist. This should be discourage at all cost because the people on the recieving end feel marginalised. The Post should be condemned for starting this nonsense by all Zambians instead of twisting facts to support a selfish man’s agenda.

  98. The statistics are laid plain before you guys, its either you take or throw them away? The author has given UPND free advice, but we know that you will not get it…….what a stiff necked people.

  99. We have all observed that when certain people realise that a Lozi, Tonga, North-westerner, Lenje etc forms a party and that person is seen clean, no corruption etc, the next allegation would be he is a tribalist. We have seen this several times, it started with Mazoka and I am even surprised that people who refused to vote for him as good as he was could say he was a good leader. The man was good, but tribalist could not vote for him because they felt they would be speaking fitundu. We are really missing a lot on good leaders, hence we keep choosing and bringing back the same corrupt one who once abused office and pushed for their tribesmen’s third term. Zambians are more than awake now than before, watch this space.

  100. its not the bemba that vote for a president but the whole Zambia, so blame the zambian people not the bemba tribe…Don,t hate the player,Hate the game… not the player unless your saying bembas are player presidents

  101. Even after losing the election, the MMD is the most relevant opposition party. HH is all over the place and has become a symbol of hate. HH must forget the notion of a coalition government clause because it supports only him. Right now, even the constitution will go without that clause, because when Sata declares to dissolve parliament, the MMD dances, they have no resources to retain seats.

  102. It is impressive to note that someone could give such valuable advice for free – just for the love of the Motherland. Hopefully another will care enough for Zambia, and love HH enough, to ensure that HH reads it and ponders over it. I am proud to be a Zambian and to note such caring minds emerging. My reference is to the main letter, of course, and not to some of the miserable comments submitted above, which are totally missing the essence of the open letter to HH.

  103. Bembas should stop cheating themselves that they are not tribal. All this rubbish rhetoric about associating Tongas to tribalism was first started by Chiluba’s govt and later by the Catholic PF chaps that do not have any moral sense of judgment that such kind of talking can lead our beloved Zambia. Chiluba’s govt reduced the Tongas’ ecomonomy by destroying their agriculture industry; praise be to God for availing Late president Mwanawasa and RB that helped the Tongas regain their pride. How, honestly speaking shall a Tonga support such kind of characters that have no regard of their pride. I only wish President Sata will consider support the southern agriculture industry like his two predecessors Levy and the tender hearted RB.

  104. The problem with some thick headed bloggers is that they fail to understand that not everybody thinks like them. Calling someone does not support your opinion a tribalist is simply stupid. Do not just analyse issues from a bemba’s point of view, try to understand why voters in Southern, Western, Central, North Western and Eastern did not support Sata. That should be your main concern since Sata is the president. HH is on the raise whether you like it or not. He will be Sata’s main opponent in the next elections. The last elections were mainly a contest between Sata and RB and some voters(HH supporters) could have tactfully supported PF simply to get rid of MMD. Others supported MMD because they did not like Sata. These are issues you cannot ignore.

  105. This article might appear to be giving useful advise to HH but when you read the first part you realise that the author is trying to justify the tribal trash from Mmembe and his Post Newspaper. I am sure Makalu(the author) realised that he made a mistake in his first analysis and tried to correct himself in this article. As I have pointed out above, understanding voting pattens in Zambia requires deep analysis of the voters, taking into consideration demographical and historical factors. Simply drawing conclusions from statistical results is shallow intellectualism. If you do a proper analysis of the last election results taking into account the above points then you will understand why Cornelius Mweetwa(UPND) gave the statement that trigger the response from the author.

  106. And just so you know, the publication of this document came 1 week after I sent it to HH… I gave them a full 7 days from 25th October to 31October to get back to me if they felt it would BENEFIT them. I think my advice is top notch. I thought they would take it. Especially the slogan “Don’t Kubepa,” I think it is brilliant. So I did not want to rush the doc to the public so that everybody would know where the new UPND strategy came from. But I am sure, they have better ideas than I gave them, so they did not get back to me. They did not even acknowledge receipt. For whatever reason.

Download the whole document here, you will be better informed.  http://docs.com/@mauricemakalu

  107. People of Zambia the good Country of honey and milk. Are you GOD amongst us to decide the destiny of our Country? We should not mock our selves. Please let us talk something very seriously. If we can talk about developmental programmes and food security the better.I will challenge any Zambian here. What colour is corruption? If you do not know, corruption is a colourless animal and at times it is very difficult to identify it.Go to any river and see for your self.Pure water in our rivers. What colour is there for you to come and write about.

  108. Tribal politics is real not only in Zambia but most african countries. Just check the statistics, Sata 64% Nothern and 74% Luapula. HH 73% Southern. RB must have gotten 84% or so in the East (Kumawa).
What HH sould concentrate on is to keep the Southern Vote, win the Western vote, Central vote, North Western vote and Ndola rural. Professor Clive Chirwa should come in and take over the MMD and retain the strong East vote. The two should then combine – one should be running mate (Vice Presido). HH should forget about the Bemba vote. It is difficult to win in Bemba land if you are standing against a bemba speaking candidate.

  109. Zambia is a so-called Christian Nation and its saddening to read some of the hate comments/speech on this fora. We all Zambians at the end of the day.Let’s learn to love and respect one another. Zambia is a country for all Zambians regardless of religion, sex and creed.:). We ought to look at the welfare of our children’s children when planning so that they have a better future full of hope and harmony! Tribal politics should be forgotten and politics of thinkers must be promoted. Look around you Zambia, you face the same challenges as Bots, SA, Zim,Nam etc, learn from them thru consultation for an expected future. Come on Zambia, let’s stand up and be counted.God bless Africa and God bless Zambia(Land of the strong and free)

  110. It is very unfortunate that some writer called Maurice Makalu chose to entitled his vomits on the UPND’s performance as “HH Tribalism What Elections Statistics Say” as presented from the writer’s document placed on the Internet at http://docs.com/@mauricemakalu. The writer, Maurice Makalu failed to choose to become sober in his analysis and emotionally resorted to tribalism in his head to try and paint the UPND as a tribal political party just like The POST Tabloid does things to discredit a very honest and competitive UPND leader HH in our National election. The above statistics’s show tribalism analysis by Maurice Makalu simply show that the writer is dull because of the following.

  111. Electoral Commission of Zambia 2011 elections results as presented on http://www.elections.org.zm/ from the whole of Southern Province are: SOUTHERN Province
Candidate Number of votes received Against Votes cast Against Registered votes
    HICHILEMA Hakainde 266754 71.41% 41.45%
    BANDA Rupiah B 71519 19.15% 11.11%
    SATA Micheal C 24609 6.59% 3.82%
    CHIPIMO Elias C 1338 0.36% 0.21%
    KAUNDA Tilyenji C 1245 0.33% 0.19%
    MAGANDE Ngandu P 988 0.26% 0.15%
    MILUPI Charles L 955 0.26% 0.15%
    MIYANDA Godfrey K 833 0.22% 0.13%
    NAWAKWI Edith Z 432 0.12% 0.07%
    MUTESA Fredrick 240 0.06% 0.04%
    Total Votes 368913
    Received 368913

  112. And so any normal person would use such results to analyse the voting pattern since Southern Province has more votes (totalling 368913) than Luapula Province (totalling 203361) due to size as will be shown below: LUAPULA Province
Candidate Number of votes received Against Votes cast Against Registered votes
    SATA Micheal C 151822 73.54% 37.13%
    BANDA Rupiah B 47289 22.90% 11.56%
    HICHILEMA Hakainde 1758 0.85% 0.43%
    CHIPIMO Elias C 596 0.29% 0.15%
    MAGANDE Ngandu P 512 0.25% 0.13%
    KAUNDA Tilyenji C 417 0.20% 0.10%
    NAWAKWI Edith Z 356 0.17% 0.09%
    MILUPI Charles L 248 0.12% 0.06%
    MUTESA Fredrick 196 0.09% 0.05%
    MIYANDA Godfrey K 167 0.08% 0.04%
    Total Votes 203361
    Received 203361

  113. What a normal person or a non-tribal person will do is look at how Mr HH performed in Southern Province as a whole from the total Southern Province votes alone and also look at how PF’s Mr Sata Micheal Chilufya performed in the whole of Luapula Province with respect to Luapula Province total votes. The picture must be as follows: Southern Province HH/UPND = 71.41% and MCS/PF = 6.50%% and then Luapula Province HH/UPND = 0.85% and MCS/PF = 73.54%.

  114. Also, NORTHERN Province
Candidate Number of votes received Against Votes cast Against Registered votes
    SATA Micheal C 242455 64.18% 36.76%
    BANDA Rupiah B 121482 32.16% 18.42%
    HICHILEMA Hakainde 2935 0.78% 0.45%
    CHIPIMO Elias C 1458 0.39% 0.22%
    NAWAKWI Edith Z 1031 0.27% 0.16%
    KAUNDA Tilyenji C 910 0.24% 0.14%
    MAGANDE Ngandu P 886 0.23% 0.13%
    MILUPI Charles L 654 0.17% 0.10%
    MIYANDA Godfrey K 420 0.11% 0.06%
    MUTESA Fredrick 390 0.10% 0.06%
    Total Votes 372621
    Received 372621

So that comparing HH and MCS votes in this province becomes: HH/UPND = 0.78% and MCS/PF = 64.18%.

  115. Also, NORTHERN Province
Candidate Number of votes received Against Votes cast Against Registered votes
    SATA Micheal C 242455 64.18% 36.76%
    BANDA Rupiah B 121482 32.16% 18.42%
    HICHILEMA Hakainde 2935 0.78% 0.45%
    CHIPIMO Elias C 1458 0.39% 0.22%
    NAWAKWI Edith Z 1031 0.27% 0.16%
    KAUNDA Tilyenji C 910 0.24% 0.14%
    MAGANDE Ngandu P 886 0.23% 0.13%
    MILUPI Charles L 654 0.17% 0.10%
    MIYANDA Godfrey K 420 0.11% 0.06%
    MUTESA Fredrick 390 0.10% 0.06%
    Total Votes 372621
    Received 372621

Comparing HH and MCS votes in this province becomes: HH/UPND = 0.78% and MCS/PF = 64.18%.

To me The Southern Province people voted wisely for quality while others in the two provinces mentioned above voted for the jokes we are witnessing from State House right now.

  116. There is nothing we can do in human strength to mend our differences. We selfishly believe our preferences are better than others’ opinions. In sacrificing our desires for the greater good of a unified country, we please God. And obeying God gives greater joy than getting our way.

  117. WHEN SOMEONE SAYS?
When someone says there are too many monkeys at the State
House grounds, does this make them an animal-hater? When someone says there are too many street-vendors in the streets, does this make them street-vender haters? When someone says there are too many Chinese doing road construction does it make them Chinese-haters? When someone says there are too many men in leadership, does it make them anti-man? When the Post worship and defend Sata blindly, does this make them idolaters?

  118. HH ‘S FACE IS NOT LIKABLE.HE HAS NO HUMOUR.EVEN WITH HIS IMAGE BUILDERS HE HAS FAILED TO MAKE A MARK ON THE POLITICAL SCENE.MY ADVICE IS THAT HE SHOULD CONCENTRATE IN DOINGS HIS BUSINESS BECAUSE POLITICS IS NOT HIS CALLING.HE WILL NEVER BE PRESIDENT IN ZAMBIA HE LOST IT WHEN HE REFUSED TO SUBMIT TO H.E SATA IN THE PACT.VIVA SATA GOD BLESS YOU.

  119. HH has wrong advisors who don’t want to tell him the truth… He has failed to get the Urban vote (including livingstone). Lusaka and Copperbelt Urban have all the tribes with common interests among voters. If HH had to Capture these voters who on average are educated and have information (TV, Radio and newspapers) + his S/Province Dominance, He could have come atleast Second. Now the Belief in this Young Man is that people all over Zambia are Bemba and that is why Sata won the election. Those politics will not take this Man anywere. If HH wants to Rule this Country one day, he should embrace all the Zambians like KK and Sata have done. Now he has taken the Rb way. No one wants to associate with a failure like Rb my friend. U are playing with fire.

  120. HH and many readers should take what has been given in this open letter and carefully think through, then take out what is “rubbish” and keep even the 1% or so remaining. If all the Zambian tribes agreed to live together as a country or nation, honestly the goal of any serious politician is to reach to ALL Zambians to get their vote irrespective to tribe, status, race, profession etc including “enemies” – this is a painstaking process but it is important for learning patience and perseverance – when done majority of the people will vote for such a politician. In this vein it is not individuals that matter most but the common good.
