Kawana reiterates the importance of Africa Public Service day

Government says the 2026 Africa Public Service Day celebrations have demonstrated the progress being made in improving service delivery and enhancing the responsiveness of public institutions to citizen’s needs.

Speaking after touring exhibition stands at the Public Service Day commemorations in Lusaka, Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana said the various displays reflected a functional civil service committed to delivering quality services across the country.

Mr Kawana said interactions with government institutions at the event provided clear evidence of improved coordination among ministries and departments in implementing programmes that directly benefit citizens.

He noted that the public is now able to witness firsthand how government institutions are working together to provide efficient and responsive services.

“The exhibitions show that we have a functional government and a responsive civil service that is delivering services to the people,” Mr. Kawana said.

And speaking in line with this year’s Public Service theme “Enhancing Public Sector Institutions and Empowering Multi Stakeholder Partnerships to Achieve Universal Water Availability and Safe Sanitation by 2063”. Ministry of Tourism Permanent Secretary Evans Muhanga reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to sustainable water resource management and tourism development, emphasising the critical role water plays in the growth of Zambia’s tourism industry.

He explained that water is central to tourism activities, wildlife conservation, heritage preservation, hospitality services, and food tourism.

“Water is life, and tourism depends heavily on water.

Mr Muhanga added that tourism establishments across the country are implementing water-saving measures, including the use of sensor-operated taps.

The Permanent Secretary further stressed the importance of managing shared water resources responsibly, noting that rivers such as the Zambezi pass through several countries and require regional cooperation through trans frontier conservation initiatives.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Education Assistant Director and Head of communication Kunda Mando She said the theme of this year’s Africa Public Service Day, which focuses on enhanced public service delivery, partnerships, and water and sanitation, resonates strongly with the ministry’s mandate.

Ms Mando said the ministry has strengthened the implementation of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programmes in schools to promote healthy practices among learners.

“Partnerships have continued to play a significant role in expanding access to education infrastructure across the country,” She said.

Ms Mando revealed that the ministry is implementing the construction of 120 schools with support from the World Bank, while an additional eight schools in remote areas are being built with support from the European Union.

She added that the government is also independently funding the construction of 115 schools to increase access to quality education and reduce infrastructure deficits.
