Government has confirmed that it has increased salaries for the Executive and members of the legislature.
Chief Government Spokesperson Mwansa Kapeya who confirmed the development said that it is normal for the President’s salary and that of his ministers and MPs to be hiked.
Mr. Kapeya has justified the increments, saying that whenever salaries for civil servants are hiked, those of constitutional office bearers should also be increased.
Salaries for MPs and executive were last year hiked, making the latest increment the second in two years.
According to Statutory Instrument number 91 of 2013 signed by Finance Minister Alexander Chikwanda, President Michael Sata will be getting an annual salary of K414, 406 while Vice President Guy Scott will now earn K250, 551 basic pay plus other special and utility allowances.
Ministers will earn a basic pay of K189, 672 each and Deputy Ministers K179, 158 plus other utility and special allowances.
And MMD President Nevers Mumba has condemned government’s move to hike salaries for the Executive and Members of Parliament.
Dr. Mumba says government’s decision only shows that it does not put the interest of the poor Zambians first.
well the streets are dirty. getting a lot of money well living in shiiit.
exactly, so the whole country looks like crap, and ur dumb zzz thinks increasing ur pay will better ur life. this guy Sata, its time for him to die.
How many times am I going to tell you that Sata and PF are a party of failures. They are out to make themselves rich and not to make the country better. Please Zambians wake up, you have crooks in state house. After two years in office, I think there is no disputing that this is failure of the highest order. Kick these b*ums out now, before it is too late.
So masumba is getting 172 000 000 old currency a three week course chap me with my Phd soon i get 8 000 and busy offering my services, Fwalisha ba guy
So ZWD still diggs deeper. They published this story yesterday with copies of evidence. Viva ZWD
My advice to all opposition members is to accept the increment but donate it to a fund or charity to support our hospitals in buying latest diagnostic equipment and help our schools buy educational materials and science lab equipment. There is no donation too small to support a cause.
Please opposition MPs I beg you do this because it is right thing to do to show that you have conscience and are not greedy.
If you are honest with yourselves, Its not much; K414,406, K250,551, K189,672, and K179,158 per annum all translate to;
K34,534 =(+-) $6,500/month for a president
K20,879 = (+/-) $3,900/month for a Veep
K15,806 = (+/-) $3,000/month for a minister (This one is ok)
K14,929 = (+/-) $2,800/month for a deputy minister
Have you ever asked yourself how much BoZ governor bags? or parastatal bosses?
When you take the responsibility of the office and factor in the risk and other things, the salary should compensate. If your president earns K34,000 a month, and needs to push the private sector to do business in rural areas, what is there to stop him from taking a bribe of $100,000 to assist an investor cut through red tape? Your average Zambian CEO earns a net of K47,000+
How can a they increase their salaries at this moment when the money was obtained through borrowing?? How can an economy grow like that?? The money is supposed to be ploughed back into sustainable projects such a boosting of the agriculture sector & industrial sector, etc !!! Salaries for the executives, sounds more like some people are trying to milk the cow, while the day breaks and do not care what Zambia will amount to beyond 2016 !!! Riding the gravy train indeed !!! Have you forgotten about the poor man on the street who does not even know where his next meal is going to come from?? Nor how he is going to put food on the table for his poor family??? Money is your pocket has turned out to be ” Money in some few people’s pockets”. Borrowed money into their pockets, indeed !!!
@ Stunned, just show us some evidence that this increment will stop them from being corrupt. The president does not necessarily have to be the most highly paid individual in the land. Private companies have the resources to pay huge salaries. The president is a public servant and is paid from tax payers’ contributions. In the U.S. Obama’s pay is peanuts compared to remuneration of private sector CEOs. These criminals are not in office to get rich but to work for the good of the nation. If they think their pay is too little they can leave and we shall find other people willing to get peanuts.
Greedy bast@rds while the rest of the country suffers
when was the debate in parliament?
Clearly – caught with both hands in the cookie – and then trying to justify it! wow!
@ Stunned,
who said the presidents or MP’s salary must be linked to bank of zambia governor or parastatal bosses? failure to reason is it?
well the streets are dirty. getting a lot of money while living in shiiit.
They deserve it, they work very hard
This government yet again has proved to be doing the right things at the right times
The president is a blessing to this country
Thanks
Zambians are making streets dirty and they are responsible. In Canada you pay 500 Dolars for throwing litter in the street even in Zambia we have laws but because we have opposition who can not think anything positive.Ee pay council tax in Europe monthly K1 million Kwacha (old currency) for a two bed while in Zambia you pay twice in a year less than 10 Dolars. If I was the mayor I would inforce the law and streets will not be dirty so don’t blame Govt. For your own information I still get more than the ministers bs Nevers offer is your agenda
This is the Party l voted for sure. I m very disappointed with our President. How do you increase your salaries before we pay the Farmers, Nurses at UTH and Retires? Think Twice Mr President. We are walking through a very thin line now.Is this what we promised Zambian People? Anyway, I have also resigned from the Party.
There is absolutely nothing wrong as long as it falls within the law but debatably the timing could be wrong looking at strikes and some people who are sensitive will feel it’s morally wrong. Reality check if it was on plan/budget let it be maybe they might concentrate on their jobs and deliver than stealing tax payer’s money…my thoughts
Better be sorry now than later because things are really going to get worse before they get better. Next time use your vote wisely.
yes I agree with you mwansa kapenya that it is normal to i9ncrease your salary, but I do not agree that it is normal to increase by over hundred % three times in two years. that is the worst selfishness, yet some quarters of society are on strike for gating 4% on a meager salary
Only late Presido Mwanawasa was able to postpone the salary hike for thr constitutional officers. However, you cannot stop……..them.May I ask how do you increase sal for people who are tax exempt in most of the services??
Eeeeeeeeeeeeish!!!
It may be normal, but not at this time when others are on Strike and you are telling us that there is no Money and even suggesting a wage freeze. Ba Mwansa ndimwe ba Kulu, muzalenga tiku tukwaneni.
Wait a moment, Where are the Opposition MPs? What do they have to say on this because their salaries have been increased too.
when they oppose you call them bitter, so what do you want them to do. this is old news at ZWD
@ Gundown they understand it was part of budget we should not just criticise for the sake of it but may be timing is off
Salary increments are normal, but not more than 100% and 3 times after assuming power within 2 years. I did NOT vote for Sata, am UPND, but i received his election with gladness. I never thought this would happen with Sata – high and frequent salary increment for himself and his officials, increased costs due to induced bye elections, building his retirement house, large cabinet with nearly 2 deputy ministers for each ministry etc etc. I would listen to his rallies and political adverts on TV, but surprisingly, am seeing the opposite. At times I ask myself, whether I heard him clearly or maybe i need to borrow recorded videos from ZNBC?
Am sure those recorded events of Sata in opposition have gone missing by now!
ba fee colour, your time will come…..mukachula ba pushi
Ba chimbwii look at me a degree holder, you removed rural hardship and retention allowance from my pay. Then to insult me more, my salary has been cut and the person with no qualification is on the same scale as me in the name of harmonisation. Mwe mbushi mwe ma politicians….all you can say is that its normal for your salaries to be increased. Stupid, selfish politicians..may your lives be without peace for your deceitfulness, you will never have enough of that money and your very mouths you are serving will choke you to death.
Sympathise with you. Just looking at those chaps, most have put on weight as an attestment to their consumption patterns. I have visited the homes of a few MP’s, most who only could afford bread for breakfast, today it full english breakfast with juice to wash down the greasy egg, bacon and sausages. And they cant see the plight of the civil servants whose salaries the politicians dont want to increase. Shame!
Become an MP then you will not make silly comments that is a merger salary Mwenya Zambians.Visit an MP in her or his constituency then you will advocate for 1000% increment what they get is peanuts
I don’t agree with u bwana minister, first the poor Zambians were told to sacrifice when u removed subsides. We as your employers demand that u also sacrifice by not hiking your salaries.Truly don’t kubeba iyi!! zoona.
LET US WAIT FOR THE OPPOSITION MPS. IF IT IS WRONG THEY WILL SAY SOME THING
today you want them to say something, when all along they raised critical issues against PF AND YOU called them BITTER. This news is old at ZWD they already know, maybe its time for you the NON-BITTER so see the real SATA.
Morality Vs Service!!
Selfishness Vs Service Provision
Greedy Vs Justice
Politics Vs Socialism
its been long overdue! our president has to catch up with recovering the Cash he spent during his 10years in opposition! actually his Salary has to increase by 70% by 2016%. Actually our President is still poor!
@MSZ
So you agree that Sata and his team are in government to put more money in their pocket alone and not in most poor Zambians’s pockets.
Imwe Baba, be careful what you wish for.
Nobody begged Sata, or any previous President to run for office. They tulukusha’d on
their own free will, therefore- WE DONCHI OWE THEM ANYTHING!!! They Owe the Country Full Stop!
A govt with misplaced priorities…..
satisfying their tummies first, when a poor ,voiceless student abroad hasn’t been paid his\her allowance and they are now feeding on makaron with salt, shame!!!!
Mwansa Kapeya, what did your Sata and the entire bunch in PF say when RB wanted to apend his signature to salary increases when you were in opposition? If you answer this question in an honest manner, I will give you credit.
How many times am I going to tell you that Sata and PF are a party of failures. They are out to make themselves rich and not to make the country better. Please Zambians wake up, you have crooks in state house. After two years in office, I think there is no disputing that this is failure of the highest order. Sata must be the lowest paid president in Africa.414,406/12=34367 per month.
vice president 250,551/12=20878
minister 189672/12=15806
d/ministers 179158/12=14929
I don’t see anything wrong with this you guys.
@Poverty yapa Zed
You have to look at the President ‘s pay in comparison with the people who put him in power not with other richer countries. To me its just pure greed of our leaders. Next time vote for some one who has the capacity to make money without politics involved. In other words some one to whom a K414406 is just drop in the ocean so that he would not prioritise his pay before the well being of most Zambians. Maybe its true what they say that most Africans don’t learn lessons!
Here in the UK David Cameron earns far less than the mayor of London for a reason. Barack Obama also earns less money compared to other technocrats and yet their countries are the richest in the world.
PF are just a bunch of greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed id1ots.
Is that the most ethical reason to pay yourself such sums of money just to stay on the same Radar as other president? Why not look at your countrys Economical situation for crying out loud? It is not bad to have a “correct salary” as leaders of the nation, but certain elements have to be looked at, if these people have hearts they will cancel these increments and do the right thing.
Poverty yapa zed are u sure coz in SADC he is fourth with our weak economy
even in the face of such nonsense , its a pity that we ‘ve nowhere to turn to.
current opposition are equal to this nonsense .
maureen mwanawasa is quite because of how she lived her life in state house, many of the people hoped that she’ll do a good job after her husband.
What has Mr. Sata had to pay for since becoming President? Free housing, free utilities, free car, free food, free travel, free medical care, free security, free phone, retirement house being built (at another collosal cost!). Maybe he buys his own clothes? I hope so. He doesn’t even have to send money to the relatives – he just gives them jobs!
I cant believe they couldnt slash down their salaries, atleast thats what i was expecting looking at the way things are right now, i wonder were all that money is coming from? Oh wait a minute…..from the loans to be paid back by the poor masses of the country, what a country!
@cindy
Thats PF for you my dear. Typical heartless, shameless bunch of crooks.
@ Wanzelu
am so shocked and feel sad for the poor people, imagine those walking around with credit mounting to the top of the roof, spending sleepless nights were the money will come from to pay back, pay rentals, take their children to school/ college/ university, fute for medical bills if any or just die without even coming close to the clinic, those that dont know were the next meal will come from, imagine all those with no hope for tomorrow, am really feeling for the people and it hurts so bad, real bad! If i have access to all these things and much to spare… yet i feel like this, what more them, a death trap it is!
@cindy
My dear I expected this, having known Sata for a long time. By 2016 Zambia will have accumulated a debt of over $9 billion for which 40% will be in Sata and PF members’s pockets. To make the matters worse the donor countries like UK and USA are the least worried because a huge chunk of this money will end up in their financial sectors as our leaders try hard to hide the loot and buy properties in these countries.
Increasing salaries while the economy is in intensive care is sheer madness. As at now the treasury is struggling to pay civil servants and you increase the salaries of 80+plus ministers MPs and the President!!This recklessness is going to haunt our country for a long time. What a mess!
pf walking on very thin ice
Greediness at play bane, i never knew Sata would be like this.when RB did the same what did these guys yap yap.shame on these buffons.
you pipo shud stop complaining, have u 4gotten the slogan,”more money in ur pockets”?it meant, their pockets.so i will do the next best thing maybe i can be erroneously awarded a nipa diploma & become deputy minister,k179pin basic.
May these thieving FOOLITICIANS starting with their leader choke on this same money. May they thirst for more money in their pockets where they will lose sleep and sanity. May their perceived blessing turn into curses. For now evil is prevailing but I know Jah who sees and knows all will balance things for the downtrodden of this here land. We have here a Serpent in its purest unalderated form at the helm of this country surrounded by its minion snakes of a cabinet that has bitten its people. But the Mighty Conquering Lion of Judah thru the good brethren and sistren of Zambia will arise and trample upon these selfish snakes and their seed. Dem belly full but we hungry. Let Jah arise…
AND other public sector workers’ pay increase has been frozen? This is silly and criminal for government to do.
They are driving Zambia into deeper debt just to award themselves more undeserved money.
May these thieving F-O-O-Liticians, starting with their leader choke on this same money. May they thirst for more money in their pockets where they will lose sleep and sanity. Soulosi, where are you today to defend your president?
Saulosi is ashamed to comment today. I suppose he is mauless because of Sata’s latest bomb shell. It must have affected his mind really hard.
Anyway it s not all gloom and doom. One day Sata and his PF will be no more. I hope Zambians have learnt a hash lesson so that next time they will vote wisely.
Tell opposition MPs to refuse the increament pls
This man is either dull or fails to be truthful to himself. Civil servants got paltry increments. Even if the civil servants had gotten 100%, it would not have made any sense. Why are you increasing the Presidents salary? What bills does he pay? What school fees does he pay? What food does he buy? What gas does he buy and burn? What rent does he pay? You want to justify and say its a minimal increment; the so called 200 % increment for lowly paid workers got them to just below K3000. Those nurses, pharmacists, etc are the people that pay rent, bills, buy food, buy gas, jump on buses. While the president may enjoy those as conditions of service, it is not morally right to keep increasing a salary he does not need while you marginalise the ones who actually need the money. Easy to sa
Government of the People?? My foot! The most CORRUPT & SELFISH Government right from the Top to the Bottom.
Jobs for Sisters in Law, Relatives, & mind You these FAT CATS being given cushy foreign service jobs, + increments, are already comfortable & donchi really need the Money/Wage rises asap. Why NOT prioritize & offer the poor Nurses a rise. They DO really need it. This is the CR*P you get with African Politics of Poverty, & Self enrichment.
Promise You the Earth, & more money in your pockets, then once you ask them to honor their election promises, they end up using their Cadres to brutalize you for asking whats rightly Yours. P.F biggest waste since Zambia’s Independence

What qualifies Sata forsuch a salary since he is always confined in bed at the state house.
Cry my beloved Zambia
The monthly salary for our President has been adjusted to 43,611 which is 8,076 US dollars. What a life as this is too low for the Head of State. UPND boys please stop mourning and face the reality.
Guys. I know some of us are very good at analyzing issues. I just want to give you a simple calculation here. The President will be getting K414 406 per year. That translates to 6278 US$ per month. This gives us USD 209 per day (take 30 working days). I want to challenge some of you guys to get the figures of consultants per day and compare with this so called high salary for a Republican President. This amount of salary is not even a salary of a Councillor in some Countries. You cry that politicians are corrupt. What do you expect if their salaries are low. Go to ZRA and check the salary structure of those guys there and get the reasons why it is like that. You are honestly arguing and complaining about a salary of a President. Come on guys let us be realistic and real.
are you sure that salary is low the president pays no bills, food is bought for him he does not pay rent and dont be fooled by the salary why dont they include all the other allowances he is entitled to and dont forget that a wage freeze was proposed which means that no one will be employed by boma in the next 2 years cause boma has no money
Corrupt from head to toe! It’s a government of lunatics. Unfortunately, this was their campaign slogan that if they were voted into power they were going to put more money in their pockets. The Zambian populace bought into the idea, thinking it was going to be an all inclusive affair. Now it is clear as to who is getting more money in their pockets. The rest are justified to cry foul! Mr. Sata is a man of action alright, doing exactly what he said he was going to do.
With me its fine
only if it were us; be fair to one another
they deserve it
What about the opposition MPs? Why are they quite if they are against the increments. Let us not be hypocrites here Ba opposition.
MY CURRENT EXPAT SALARY IS AT
R60,000.00/M
PRESIDENT SATA, AS AT THIS MONTH’S SALARY REVIEW GETS
R80,000.00/M
PRESIDENT ZUMA OF SOUTH AFRICA GETS
R205, 000.00/M
PRESIDENT KENYATTA OF KENYA GETS
R150,000.00/M
PRESIDENT POHAMBA OF NAMIBIA GETS
R140,000.00/M
NO WONDER RB TURNED TO ‘KALUNDALUNDA’ FROM NIGERIAN MAFIAS TO SUPPLEMENT HIS SALARY!
To Luapula Premier comment 41. It is very silly to use a comparison of other economies to justify this increment. So what if those salaries are higher- can we compare their economies? If you are CEO of a small company does that mean you get the same salary as the Zambeef CEO since your portfolios have the same name? That is flawed thinking.
I suggest that we tie salary increments to aspecific revenue targets. I wouldn’t mind the President earning in excess of K 100 000 if government revenue can increase two or three fold in the same period. At the end of the day, govnmt is an enterprise and the President and his cabinet are the chief executive and management team respectively. If targets are not met then there should be no salary increment. Kwasila.
Balya again ba Mwankole!. Where is the opposition on this matter? Typical third world mentality and politics of poverty.
What i don’t understood is in fact how you’re
no longer really a lot more smartly-appreciated than you might be right now.
You are very intelligent. You recognize therefore significantly on the
