Chiefs and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkandu Luo says the World Heritage Centre should inscribe the Barotse plains in Western province as a heritage site.
Professor Luo said the Barotse landscape has enough unique features that qualify it to be listed among the World Heritage Sites in the World.
The Minister said UNESCO through the World Heritage Centre must favourably consider submissions made by the National Heritage Conservation Commission (NHCC) to have the Barotse flood plains protected as a heritage site.
Speaking during the NHCC organised orientation workshop on the Barotse Cultural Landscapes in Lusaka, Professor Luo said Western province has for a long time preserved its tradition, culture and beliefs, ingredients she said makes it attractive to be a protected heritage site.
The Minister further said the Barotse Royal Establishment (BRE) has an already well established system of protecting natural resources in the province without supervision.
She said there is no reason why Zambia should only have one heritage site which is the Victory Falls when the country has other places befitting heritage site status.
And speaking at the same occasion, NHCC Chief Executive Officer Collins Chipote said inscription of the Barotse plains as a World Heritage site will come with a lot of benefits.
Mr Chipote said apart from attracting partnerships in the management of the plains, the area will have opportunities of funding for conservation of the site.
He said he is confident that UNESCO will nominate the Barotse plains as a World Heritage Site by next year.
An expert from the International Council of Monuments and Museums Karrel Bakko is in Zambia to assess NHCC’s application to have the Barotse plains listed as a world heritage site.
Currently only the Victoria Falls is recognised as a World Heritage Site in Zambia.

Okay Ba mudala ba Nkandu you have spoken well, Now dont sidetrack us, we are awaiting you to clear yourself from the antagonsim you have caused with the Bashi Lubemba. We want things to be well for Zambia, Bashi Lubemba, and you too. The Lozi’s BRE wont trust you with their plains if you are wrecking havoc in your own village. Please address that issue and let it come to rest.
Off topic there!
its true let her clear her name, to me she comes out as a selfish leader
Look at that loose meat dangling on her arms, awful!
hape mina mu shaka zeo
Meat dangling?? That is in very bad taste. All of us have features which we may have no control over. That comment is not from a person who knows and fears God.
Amyway, the proposal to make Barotse plains a cultural heritage sounds fine except that you need to carry the people who live there in the decision-making. They are very sensitive to anything or anyone who makes proposals that may affect their livelihood and control of the land. Especially, the plains. It is a good idea but please explain, consult, involve them at all levels.
Tuhela Bulozi bwa luna nkala-nkala tuwe.
what do you mean? please communicate to all of us. Masupa yao
A picture of the Barotse Plains would have been more appropriate than the Minister’s.
Jealousy down! Nkandu Luo is also a heritage sight!
Hahahahahaa
Isn’t she talking about a sight in a foreign country?
@BAROTSE ISSUE
Don’t forget that 99.99% of lozis want to be part of Zambia. Just imagine Clement Sinyinda today campaigning for secession – where was he when he was Minister in a Zambian government not many years ago??? This is a lost cause. Sinyinda is a terrible human being and just shows how selfish he is. He is one of those people who can poison a community well just because he has dug his own small private well. He is just wasting his time. These old guards will soon die off and go and we will have peace again. What has Sinyinda done for his province or even his own village on this earth?? Not long ago he was Barotse Royal Establishment Prime Minister BUT they kicked him out after discovering he was just a greedy selfish corrupt dictator. What is he saying now? Ma rubbish.
What features are only found in that plain and not in the may other plains in the country? The Linyungandambo are really making these people shake like leaves.
Good question.
Why don’t you visit the NHCC offices and demand to look at the application documents? NHCC is led by experts and they know what they are doing. Secondly, we don’t even know other plans they might have for future applications. Hold you fire.
We know that Nkandu Luo is not a perfect person, but please sometimes let us put jokes and politics aside and respect our leaders. She is speaking sense and campaigning for something good for the country.
:in the bashilbemba in the chitimukulu saga she introdused the blue/white MMDcoulors for miniibuses which have been discaded. How do you hold meetings to discuss some one/s property without involving the owners for that matter in Lusaka let the people be involeved. Please no tricks anymore. Why Barotseland Plains what about the plains in Luapula, Nothern and Muchinga as heritage sites? She just wants to Bembsnise the area. Let sleeping Dogs sleep. There is already so much tension in the area.we do not need more problems.
This heritage site application was first initiated by the previous governments. PF are merely completing the process. This is not the first time it is being announced even during PF’s time. We are just creating mountains out of nothing. We should learn to criticise only where there is necessity. Those that are complaining about other provinces, instead of complaining here why don’t you go the NHCC offices and find out why it decided to apply for Barotseland, and what other applications are there or are planned for the future. Application for a World Heritage Site status is a technical issue, not a political one, and there have to be concrete justifiable reasons. But instead of mourning here, go to the NHCC offices and look at the documents. Bena Zambia umulomo fye.
Prof Luo is playing off-side. Heritage sites are the prerogatives of the Minister of Tourism and Natural Resources
She is heritage site like Jean Katapa.
She ths most beautiful woman in Zambia.
