FLASHBACK Nevers Mumba (L) with former president Rupiah Banda

The International Institute of Democracy and Conflicts Resolutions has taken a swipe at embattled MMD president Nevers Mumba for shunning a reconciliatory meeting which was held in Lusaka today.

But Dr. Mumba’s Special Assistant and Communications Director, Raphael Nakachinda refuted claims that the MMD president was invited to the reconciliation meeting.

International Institute of Democracy and Conflicts Resolutions president Tresford Chomba said it was regrettable that Dr. Mumba opted to go on a campaign trail in the Copperbelt province despite having been informed of the meeting aimed at reconciling him and MMD presidential candidate Rupiah Banda.

Mr. Chomba told journalists that Dr. Mumba was informed and invited to attend the reconciliatory meeting.

He alleged that Dr. Mumba had agreed to attend the meeting but later decided to shy away.
He expressed disappointment at Dr. Mumba’s behaviour especially that the latter was a clergyman who was supposed to embrace peace.

Mr. Chomba said the institute was concerned with the wrangles that have engulfed political parties hence the move to organize a reconciliation meeting between the rival camps in the MMD party.

He said wrangles which have immersed political parties will end up confusing the electorate if they were left unaddressed.

Mr. Chomba has since urged political parties to cherish and uphold peace as this was cardinal in growing the country’s young democracy.

At the time of the reconciliatory meeting in Lusaka, Dr. Mumba was seen holding a campaign rally in Kitwe on Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, former president Rupiah Banda said there was need to find a lasting solution to the wrangles that have engulfed the former ruling party.

Mr. Banda said peace was important hence the need to solicit for efforts aimed at bringing peace in political parties.

He has since implored the International Institute of Democracy and Conflicts Resolutions to continue promoting dialogue and unity among political parties that were engulfed in internal wrangles.

But Dr. Mumba’s Special Assistant and Communications Director, Raphael Nakachinda refuted claims that the MMD president was invited to the reconciliation meeting.

Mr. Nakachinda said Dr. Mumba was not invited to the meeting neither was he talked to before.

He accused organisers of the meeting of merely doing propaganda for Mr. Banda adding that Dr. Mumba was out of the country and only arrived last night.

He wondered as to who invited Dr. Mumba when he as Special Assistant and Communications Director was not aware of the invitation.

Mr. Nakachinda said the International Institute of Democracy and Conflicts Resolutions should have first talked to Dr. Mumba and Mr. Banda separately before inviting the media to what they called a reconciliatory meeting.

He has since advised individuals and organisations to be serious when dealing with issues of the rule of law and constitution abrogation.

Dr. Mumba is the president of the MMD but some members of the party decided to choose Mr. Banda as the presidential candidate of the former ruling party for the January 20, 2015 presidential by-elections.

  1. Mr. Mumba won’t be the first one to stay away from reconciliatory talks. By the way he was in Kitwe holding a rally. 10 more days to nomination day.

    • I honestly believe that Jan 2015 will work to disadvantage anyone with presidential ambitions beyond 2016. Mumba or HH do not have enough MP support in parliament to achieve anything. If HH or Mumba really has Zambian national interest at heart they should consider the suggested national unity Govt which will have the constitution as the sole pledge for Zambians while stabilising the nation both socially and economically. Tribalism is growing and it won’t go away with Politician who have a battle on their hands for 2016.
Zambia needs healing and Zambia needs to restore her international pride.
      Vote wisely in Jan 2015

    • Attention Lusaka Times. You provide a great balanced forum for contributors and intellectual commentators. Unfortunately this is being blemished by people who spew insults and make disheartening outrageous comments. One of such insolent characters is blogger Nostradamus who relishes in insulting the very contributors and commentators, some who have gone to other online outlets as a result. Take time to read some of the comments this individual has made and you will understand what I am talking about. While cyber space allows freedom of speech, Nostradamus insults are beyond the limit. He insults parents, children of contributors, and leaders. You have the right to censor him or risk losing some of your very able contributors and commentators. P/s consider the plea.

    • @ Mwansa Kapyana, I am an ardent advocate of a free Internet and a free platform where all expression must be protected regardless. While I abhor blogging of an injurious nature, I do not support censorship and blatant cessation of bloggers’ rights on any platform. As we evolve, we must begin to learn the true essence of self-moderation and providing support systems online that will aid those whose venom such bloggers affect. I do not agree that the blogger whose example you have given consistently abuses as I have read some very useful, constructive contributions from him/her. Let’s not use the Internet to advocate a form of bigotry or else we will lose the one thing that is liberating and empowering the entire world community.

    • What is the right way of soliciting for unity in the opposition, by individual MPs’ like Lungwangwa, Mutati, Chituwo publicly declaring they will campaign for a rival presidential candidate? I thought the best way would have been either MMD or UPND as parties throwing their weight under one presidential candidate? This would have been a much more formidable proposition. And since the country has only about 16 months before the next parliamentary and presidential elections, UPND and MMD should have come together for the 2015 presidential elections. RB could have been a compromise candidate. This would have been a win-win situation. As things stand now Edgar Lungu will be the president come January 20th. Thanks to HH and Nevers selfishness! Imagine continuing with PF madness and cadreship?

    • I am really disgusted at the thinking of Chomba and his organisation. Here are my reasons:

      1. So when UPND and HH seem to be gaining popularity, the MMD and PF want a government of national unity so they can stay in power?

      2. So when RB finds that his coup of a duly elected Dr Nevers Mumba will not help him to go to State House, he now wants Dr Mumba to support him in his campaign? This is absurd. This old man should actually apologise to Dr Mumba and go back to his retirement. Personally, i do not see anything in RB that will change his style. Am really fed up with these old men.

      3. The other small parties are quiet. Waiting to see who the gullible voters will elect on 20th and throw their weight behind him? Vultures, scavengers.

      4. And the so-called police ignoring thugs?

  2. THIS IS RUBISH AIMED TO DISCREDIT NEVERS MUMBA BY THESE THUGGS WHO HAVE BEEN PAID BY THE THIEF.IF THE THIEF REALLY WANTED PEACE,HE WAS GOING TO RALLY BEHIND NEVERS AND MMD WAS GOING TO COMPIT WITH PF.THIS THIEF HAS NOW WEAKEN THE PARTY WHICH WILL BE BEATEN EVEN BY THIS FREEMASON.THANK GOD PF WILL WIN…..

  3. Cant wait for the nomination day see which candidate the MMD decide to field. Too much confusion with our politics. When are the courts going to decide which one of these two is the president of the party? In any case Mumba should just retire he lacks the killer instinct expected of a modern day politician. He should try business or something else

  4. They can court each other on the 10th as planned… In the meantime double headed campaigns are still all the rage…

  5. They have done this to him before, they call meetings without informing him and then they accuse him of “shunning” the meeting.

  6. I am sorry but for a pastor Dr mumba is disappointing. Please Dr mumba your chance will come in 2015 for now rally behind the big man and learn something. That’s the problem with the youth they think they know everything.

  7. HH AND RB ARE OUT OF THE RACE!!! RB HAD HIS CHANCE AND HE RUINED IT. HH IS DAY DREAMING AND HAS SUPPORTERS ONLINE BUT NOT ON THE GROUND.

  8. I am sorry but Dr Mumba should just take a chill pill we know where he is getting his money fromMR MHATANI. This man is a useless chap. Please we want a safe hand to guide us through 2015, and that hand is RB not DR MUMBa

  9. If I could not even lead Victory ministries in kitwe, believe I will not be able to lead a nation. I am selfish, egotistic and don’t know when to back down. I am not only sabotaging my party but also my reputation. Please vote for RB instead, he has more experience then me. #RB 2015

  10. As it was in the days of FTJ’s third term bid and the brown envelopes so shall it be. As it was in the days of RB’s most expensive campaign with GRZ machinary on his side & bid for his second term so shall it be. Ask RB and Mudala KK how well attended their rallies were but the opposition carried the day. As it was back then so shall it when polling day shall come

  11. Nevers Mumba will be a big fool to even think of being reconciled by Mr Chomba. Chomba is part of the RB campaign team. Just continue with campaign do not worse time with useless NGOs. How can a reconciliatory messenger start castigating one aggrieved part. At your age there is nothing you can learn from RB. But for your month, you were a better VP than RB.

  12. Nevers has been compromised by the criminals who are throwing everything to ensure we don’t have someone who would unravel their dodgy dealings. We need an investigation on how the PF have squandered tax payers money. Anything other than the PF will do.

  13. Mr It’s a worry

I have followed you idea. I am also suggesting that PF will be then a wrong government to continue since they failed to deliver the constitution. If Sata was still alive he would have said “Zambia has a constitution in place”. unfortunately your idea is fake

  14. RB is a big let down. You retire from politics and you are just chilling at home. Presidential bye elections come up, you just spring up from nowhere and say I am the candidate. Zambia in the sun

  15. Both RB and Mumba need a ‘visit’ from Sampa’s threatening shady people, who after dealing with him can resolve these two!

What a nun dignified mess in our democratic processes. Even NGO’s empower themselves to take a hand in selecting our Leaders!

    • Zambians let’s learn to fight for what is right and condemn what is wrong. No principles. There is is no issue here except that RB is in the wrong. If the man can be honest with himself, he will see that what he is doing is absurd. Imagine RB imposing himself as UPND candidate, imagine him imposing himself as PF candidate? Whichever way you look at it, this is a bad move. Stand up and defend injustice while it’s at a distance before you know of it, it will be at your doorstep. This is not about Mumba only, it’s a principle. Zambia, who will stand up for you?

  16. The moment one becomes a politician telling the truth is not part of the game. It is the reason why it is called a dirty game.

  18. HH IS THE ONLY I MEAN ONLY CREDIBLE LEADER WE HAVE RIGHT NOW. MY WORDS TO HH

“The incoming president never be detracted by the last kicks of the dying horse of PF. Let them talk, I know come 20 january we are BURYING PF OFFICIALLY. EVEN WHEN UNIP LOST POWER THEY NEVER BELIEVED IT WOULD HAPPEN. THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO MMD and NOW IT WILL HAPPEN TO PF aka PAYA FARMER aka PAYA FRESHER. ”

    FORMER PF MEMBER

  19. Ati “mr banda said thez need to find a lastin solution to the wrangles that hav engulfed the party”,rb the only solution is 4 u to go back to tha farm, they were no such wrangles until u popped up frm no where wit ur wrinkled face

    • RB has every right to stand in this by election. What are you afraid of? He is the right choice. The right person to lead us – RB nafuti nafuti.

  20. It’s a worry says: “I honestly believe that Jan 2015 will work to disadvantage anyone with presidential ambitions beyond 2016. Mumba or HH do not have enough MP support in parliament to achieve anything”.

Totally agree my friend, that is wise counsel for those young politicians with two ears and a brain between those ears. What would HH or Nevers Mumba do in one and half years? How many times have we heard our politicians campaign on the need to to have a second 5yr term in office in order to complete their programmes? Indeed in their opinion, why does the constitution allow a second term for those politicians who do well?
HH and Nevers, listen to wise counsel and withdraw from this one, yours is 2016. For now your focus should be to rid us of the PF.
    For now,let it be RB!

  21. RB for President 2015. He is the best person to lead us right now. No time for experiments. We need unity and not confusion and tribalism. Vote RB NafutiNafutiRB

  22. when RB took over, the world over was facing a devastating global credit crunch which needed great economic engineering and mastery for countries to pull through. Many countries fell short but Zambia under RB never saw a single company closing shop.as witnessed in most neighbouring states. Vote RB and don’t forget how we regretted in 2011. No time for experiments

    • We didn’t regret in 2011. Drive on the new road fron Challala parallel Njanji commuter into town and you will see why PF should continue.
Maybe cattle herders regret cos I seen no tracks for cows

  23. giving the presential office to a new person is a risk because the new leader might just think and embrace the bad vices thinking that’s how politics and leadership is supposed to be like. Vote wisely – Vote RB for President 2015. He is our only hope with no risks

  24. Kikikiki! It’s like a bully grabs your money and you are called to reconcile with him. Some of these NGOs are just after getting money from donors whilst pushing forward their personal agendas

  25. Dr. mumba anadya money to create confusion. For a reasonable man he has always been, he is really acting strange. give it a week and he will be endosing HH. just you wait and see

    • baba The voice,
it’s looking good for my boy Hakainde, it seems like. All the fighting factions seem to suggest that if they lose in their camp they are rallying behind ka Hakainde. ka Sampa is alleged to have made that declaration. Now baba, you are telling me Nevers the quasi american preacherman will follow suit.

  26. Now I believe what they say about Africa as a “Country for and of old men”. One blogger @Bwezani refers to Nevers as a ‘Youth’… I know the range varies from culture and social construct but basically anyone beyond the age of 40 need not be looked upon as incapable of carrying out affairs of state. This is small wonder we are lagging behind carrying mindsets of 19th Century realities in a 21st Century climate. I cringe sometimes to imagine how we keep hindering our progress by enthusiastic ignorance…

  27. There is absolutely no need for the so called ‘reconciliation’. Mr. R. Bwezani Banda should just do the honourable thing and withdraw his candidature. I am neither an MMD supporter or sympathizer but what Mr. Banda has done is shameful, to say the least.

    • my dear friend Umwaume,
This is no english class so you can relax. Personally, I tend to respect people who butcher the english language. Showing no respect to the queen. That’s what I’m talking about.. 😉
