The Zambia Road Safety Trust (ZRST) has disclosed that 30 people die every week on Zambian roads.
Trust Chairperson Daniel Mwamba disclosed this today when his organisation donated an assortment of medicated soaps to Lusaka’s University Teaching Hospital (UTH) Surgical Ward
Mr Mwamba said it is unfortunate that on average, one person dies every six hours on Zambian roads resulting in 30 people dying on a weekly basis.
He pointed out that road safety is a shared responsibility which must be taken seriously by all stakeholders.
Mr Mwamba has since urged road users to act responsibly by adhering to traffic regulations in order to reduce road carnage.
He said avoiding alcohol and drug abuse, over speeding, driver distraction and fatigue are cardinal in reducing road traffic accidents.
And UTH Assistant Public Relations Officer Natalie Mashikolo thanked the Road Safety Trust for the donations as they will help the accidents victims during their recuperation.
On February 7, 2013, Zambia experienced the worst road accident between Kabwe and Chibombo which resulted in the death of 51 people.
The ZRST with the victims and relatives of victims have since dedicated the day to remember all people killed or injured on the Zambian roads.
Seriously Zambian motorists are on top 5 of world reckless & worst drivers. Each time I’m on holidays, everything is getting worse.
The traffic lights are there only for decorations because the majority of drivers don’t respect the road rules.
Some even overtaking on closed lines and bends is the worst nightmare. The traffic and licensing departments should revoke non compliant motorists licenses’, ban them for long but regrettable periods.
Arrogance and stubbornness is the other issue, otherwise our people will die from preventable mechanisms’.

I wonder why they even waste money, on painting pedestrian crossing lines when drivers in Zambia dont even care to stop for people on foot trying to cross the roads!? Traffic police can make a lot of money just from collecting fines for not stopping at the Zebra crossing…
The worst is driving at night because a good number of motorists would never lower their high beams for an approaching vehicle. The Road safety agency should have regular road patrols on major highways to catch these rude motorists.
….the problem is RSTA operates like safety officers and policemen waiting to ACT when an accident or crime occurs respectively….they are supposed to be pro-active in ensuring that our roads and road used are safe…..
