‎ Lightning strike kills 13 cattle during heavy rains in Zimba

2

Thirteen heads of cattle belonging to a farmer of Sicheelo Village in Chief Simwatachela’s chiefdom in Zimba District have died after being struck by lightning during heavy rainfall.

‎The incident occurred on March 8, 2026 around 13:00 hours when lightning struck a herd of cattle that were grazing in the area.

‎Southern Province Police Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo confirmed the incident in a statement.

‎Mr Namalongo said the matter was reported to Choma Central Police Station on March 9, 2026 at about 12:25 hours by Mr Chrispine Ndeleki, 47, of Sicheelo Village.

‎“Mr Ndeleki reported that thirteen heads of cattle of assorted colours, branded 2T2B, died after being struck by lightning during heavy rainfall,” he said.

‎Mr Namalongo explained that earlier on the same day, around 09:00 hours, Mr Ndeleki had instructed his son to take 37 cattle for dipping before allowing them to graze within the village.

“Later around 13:00 hours, heavy rains started and the boy decided to drive the cattle back home. However, before reaching home, lightning struck the herd, killing thirteen of the animals,” he stated.

‎He said the matter was first reported to the village headman who advised the farmer to take the carcasses to Choma Police Station for police clearance.

‎Mr Namalongo said police officers verified the report and confirmed with Zimba Police Station that the cattle were not stolen.

‎“The Veterinary Department and Health Inspectors have since been engaged and the carcasses are currently being kept at an abattoir pending clearance,” the police chief said.

Kambwili says PF still commands national support

Patriotic Front member Chishimba Kambwili has declared that the PF remains capable of returning to power, delivering one of the clearest political signals yet that the former ruling party intends to reassert itself in Zambia’s national political arena.

Kambwili, one of the most outspoken and recognisable figures in the Patriotic Front, said the party still commands widespread support across the country and retains the political machinery necessary to challenge for power. His remarks come as opposition leaders continue positioning themselves within an evolving political landscape shaped by internal contests and shifting alliances.

Speaking in remarks carried in the media, Kambwili expressed confidence that the PF remains deeply rooted in communities across Zambia despite the political transition that followed the 2021 elections. He said the party’s support base had not disappeared and that many citizens still identify with the political movement that governed Zambia for a decade.

Kambwili’s statement also follows his recent period of incarceration, an episode that placed him at the centre of national political discussion. Rather than diminishing his political presence, the experience has reinforced his standing among supporters who regard him as one of the party’s most vocal and influential figures.

Throughout his political career, Kambwili has built a reputation as a forceful campaigner capable of mobilising grassroots structures. His re-emergence in political discourse therefore carries weight within PF circles where leadership debates continue to shape the party’s direction.

The Patriotic Front, which held power from 2011 to 2021, remains one of Zambia’s most significant opposition forces. Since leaving government, the party has experienced internal debate regarding leadership, strategy and the path toward political recovery.

Within that context, Kambwili’s declaration that the PF can return to power signals the determination among sections of the party to rebuild momentum and reconnect with voters across the country.

Political analysts note that the PF’s future will depend heavily on how effectively it reorganises its structures and consolidates leadership within the party. Figures such as Kambwili continue to play an important role in shaping that conversation.

For many PF supporters, the party’s decade in government remains a central reference point in political discussions. Kambwili’s remarks draw on that history while projecting confidence that the organisation can once again position itself as a major contender in national politics.

His intervention also highlights the broader contest underway within the opposition landscape where political actors are outlining their visions for leadership and influence.

Despite internal debates, the PF continues to command a visible presence in Zambia’s political environment. Statements from senior party figures such as Kambwili underscore the determination among members to maintain relevance and reassert the party’s political strength.

Kambwili’s message ultimately reflects the ongoing struggle for leadership and direction within opposition politics, a process that will continue to shape the country’s political narrative as parties reorganise and prepare for future electoral contests.

Munir Zulu Announces Bid for Lusaka Central Seat

Barely a week after his release from prison, former Lumezi Member of Parliament Munir Zulu has announced that he will contest the Lusaka Central parliamentary seat currently held by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mulambo Haimbe.

Zulu, who lost the Lumezi seat after being jailed in May last year, said he intends to challenge Haimbe in the upcoming general elections.

Speaking through a TV interview, the 38-year-old said his decision to contest the Lusaka Central seat is partly aimed at challenging the incumbent.

“It’s a confirmation that I will be vying for the Lusaka Central seat to challenge Mulambo Haimbe in particular, for so many reasons I cannot explain,” Zulu said.

With less than six months before the general elections, Zulu said he plans to launch his campaign in the coming days.

“I will be launching my campaign for Lusaka Central in the next few days because Lumezi gave it to me. I have never lost an election. They grabbed it from me, so now I want to go for Mulambo Haimbe and teach him politics,” he said.

In the 2021 general elections, Zulu contested the Lumezi parliamentary seat as an independent candidate and won with 11,929 votes. Patriotic Front candidate Pilila Jere received 10,471 votes, while United Party for National Development candidate Macdonald Phiri came third with 4,386 votes.

Zulu was released from prison on Saturday after serving an 18-month sentence for seditious practices and criminal libel. The charges stemmed from statements he made in which he accused senior government officials and judges of corruption.

Four Men Rob Trader of Cash and Beer in Chasefu

Four men allegedly attacked a trader near Mbeteka Primary School in Chasefu District and robbed him of cash and beer before fleeing into nearby bushes.

The incident happened yesterday around 12:30 hours when 37-year-old Kenani Mundu of Emusa Village in Chief Magodi’s area was riding his bicycle carrying ten boxes of 300ml Master whiskey beer and cash amounting to 100,000 Malawian Kwacha, estimated at about K5,944.

Mundu was reportedly heading to Mbeteka to meet a customer, Ibrahim Nyirenda of Mbeteka Village, who had requested that the goods be delivered and the Malawian currency exchanged for Zambian Kwacha.

According to reports, four men emerged from nearby bushes and intercepted him on the road. The suspects reportedly grabbed the bicycle and took five boxes of beer along with the cash.

After taking the items, the suspects fled into the surrounding bushes.

Mundu later contacted his customer, Nyirenda, who went to the scene. The two managed to recover the bicycle and the remaining five boxes of beer left behind.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident.

“The suspects were not armed but managed to steal the money and beer before running into the bushes,” Mweemba said.

He added that officers from Emusa Police Post under Lundazi Police Station visited the victim after the incident was reported at 17:10 hours yesterday.

“A docket of robbery has since been opened and a manhunt launched,” Mweemba said.

Govt questions delay in pursuing Mundubile over theft allegations

Government has questioned why law enforcement agencies have not taken action following allegations raised against Tonse Alliance president Brian Mundubile, raising fresh political tension within Zambia’s opposition landscape.

Chief government spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa said investigative agencies should examine claims made by former Patriotic Front official Chishimba Kambwili concerning Mundubile. Mweetwa stated that the allegations had entered the public domain and therefore required attention from institutions mandated to investigate criminal matters.

According to Mweetwa, law enforcement agencies operate independently and are expected to determine whether allegations presented to them warrant further investigation or prosecution. He indicated that the responsibility to act rests with investigative institutions, which must assess evidence before taking any legal steps.

The government spokesperson said his remarks reflected questions being asked by members of the public regarding the handling of the allegations. He added that transparency in the investigative process remains important in maintaining public confidence in law enforcement institutions.

The allegations referenced by government officials stem from claims previously made by Kambwili, who accused Mundubile of involvement in matters related to theft involving Chishimba Kambwili. The accusations became part of wider political exchanges within opposition circles, drawing attention from both government and party leaders.

Mundubile, who serves as president of the Tonse Alliance and has been associated with Patriotic Front politics, has been at the centre of a broader dispute involving leadership positions within the opposition. The controversy has developed alongside ongoing tensions within the PF and allied political formations as leaders position themselves ahead of future elections.

Political developments surrounding Mundubile intensified after PF acting national chairperson Jean Kapata stated that he should no longer be regarded as a member of the Patriotic Front. Kapata said Mundubile’s association with individuals attempting to create alternative political structures effectively placed him outside the PF organisation.

These developments have exposed deeper divisions within opposition ranks, where competing leaders have publicly articulated their political ambitions and disagreements regarding party leadership.

Government officials say institutions responsible for investigations must be allowed to carry out their work independently, free from political influence. Mweetwa emphasised that the state does not direct investigative agencies on which cases to pursue but expects them to respond when allegations of wrongdoing arise.

The situation has attracted attention from political observers who note that disputes within opposition parties have become increasingly visible in the public domain. Leadership contests and internal disagreements have played a significant role in shaping the opposition’s political narrative in recent months.

While the allegations remain part of ongoing political exchanges, investigative authorities have not yet publicly announced any formal charges or investigations relating to the matter.

The evolving dispute continues to unfold against the backdrop of broader political realignments within Zambia’s opposition, where leaders are attempting to consolidate influence and define their roles ahead of upcoming electoral contests.

ACC arrests officials over Mkushi school feeding funds

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has arrested four individuals in Mkushi District over corruption allegations linked to a school feeding programme contract valued at more than K1 million.

The suspects include district planning officer Patrick Nkhuwa and accounts assistant Nakeempa Okello from the Ministry of Education’s District Education Board Secretary office. Investigators say the arrests relate to the awarding of a contract to Ichikwanka Multi-Purpose Cooperative to supply more than 350 bags of beans under the school feeding programme.

ACC acting head of corporate communications Chilufya Chisanga said the suspects were charged with offences including abuse of authority of office and corrupt practices with a public officer. Authorities allege the cooperative was awarded the contract despite not meeting the necessary procurement standards required to supply goods to government institutions.

The investigation also led to the arrest of two bank employees, Dennis Charles Baines and Joseph Mwape, who investigators believe were involved in the financial transactions connected to the procurement process. The four suspects are expected to appear before court as the corruption investigation progresses.

Officials said the alleged irregularities occurred between July and December last year when the contract was processed and payments were allegedly facilitated. According to investigators, the case centres on how procurement procedures were bypassed during the awarding of the contract.

School feeding programmes are designed to support vulnerable learners by providing meals to pupils, particularly in rural areas where food insecurity affects school attendance and performance. Government funding is channelled through education offices to procure food supplies distributed to schools participating in the programme.

Investigators said the procurement process requires strict compliance with public finance regulations to ensure transparency and value for money. Authorities maintain that any deviation from procurement procedures can compromise public service delivery and expose government funds to abuse.

The Anti-Corruption Commission has intensified investigations into public procurement practices in several sectors, particularly programmes involving large public allocations. Education sector procurement has remained a focus for investigators because of the size of funds allocated to social support programmes.

Government agencies continue to emphasise the importance of accountability in managing public resources, especially those intended to support vulnerable communities. Officials say procurement systems must be protected to ensure that funds reach the intended beneficiaries without interference or manipulation.

The Mkushi case forms part of broader efforts by investigators to address corruption in public service institutions. Authorities say they will continue pursuing cases involving alleged misuse of public funds in order to strengthen integrity in government programmes.

The suspects remain under investigation as authorities prepare the case for prosecution. Further details are expected to emerge as the matter proceeds through the judicial process.

UNZA Pharmacy Graduand Found Dead in Makeni Weeks Before Graduation

1
A University of Zambia (UNZA) pharmacy graduand who was expected to graduate in a few weeks has been found dead in Lusaka’s Makeni area under circumstances that are still unclear.

The deceased has been identified as Kelly Miyoba, who had recently completed his pharmacy programme and was scheduled to graduate on May 22.

According to sources close to the family, Miyoba was discovered dead by a friend he had been staying with in Makeni.

It is reported that around 17:00 hours, relatives received a phone call from the deceased’s grandfather informing them that Miyoba had been found dead.

The source explained that Miyoba’s friend discovered the body and later alerted the police.

Police officers reportedly went to the house and attempted to unlock the deceased’s phone in order to identify and notify his relatives.

However, officers were initially unable to access the phone and took the body to the mortuary while continuing efforts to trace family members.

Police later managed to unlock the phone and obtained contact details for Miyoba’s grandfather, who was contacted and asked to go to the mortuary to identify the body.

Upon arrival, the grandfather confirmed that the body was that of his grandson.

The exact cause of Miyoba’s death has not yet been established.

Family members are reportedly still trying to understand what may have led to the young man’s death.

News of Miyoba’s passing has also shocked fellow students and members of the medical fraternity.

Students from Ridgeway Campus, where pharmacy students are based, have shared messages of mourning on social media, describing the death as heartbreaking.

“Kelly Miyoba was one of us not long ago and it is heartbreaking to receive the news that he is no longer with us,” the UNZA Ridgeway Students Union said.

According to fellow students, Miyoba had completed his studies a few months ago and was waiting to celebrate his academic milestone during the upcoming graduation ceremony.

Students have indicated that they may organise a candlelight memorial in his honour as they await guidance from the family.

Authorities have not yet issued a formal statement on the matter.

Nkandu Luo Defends Decision to Remove Student Meal Allowances

0
Former Minister of Higher Education Nkandu Luo says she believes she will not be judged negatively for the decision to abolish student meal allowances, stating that the move was made to benefit students across the country.

Speaking through a  TV interview , Luo said the 2019 decision to remove the allowances was taken because only two universities were benefiting from the programme at the time.

She explained that the decision was aimed at creating fairness by ensuring that more students in different institutions could benefit from government support.

“On the day of judgment, I will not be penalised for that. If anything, God will celebrate me for making it possible for all universities, colleges and trade schools to benefit,” Luo said.

She compared the situation to a family where only two children receive support while others receive none, saying the government had to find a way to extend assistance to all institutions.

Luo also stated that support for students in colleges, trade schools and universities began during her tenure as minister, not after 2021.

“Today, not from 2021, but from the time I was Minister of Higher Education, all the colleges, all the trade schools, all the universities, students were benefiting. So no one should credit UPND and say this is the first time it has happened from 2021. It is not true,” she said.

According to Luo, when she assumed office there were three operational public universities: the University of Zambia, Copperbelt University and Mulungushi University. She said only students at the University of Zambia and Copperbelt University were receiving meal allowances at the time, and in limited numbers.

“The meal allowance was not a decision I made alone. It was discussed with parents and students and taken to Cabinet for approval,” Luo said.

She explained that the government introduced a skills levy to help support students across colleges and trade schools.

Luo also said a loan scheme was introduced to allow graduates from institutions such as the University of Zambia and Copperbelt University to repay loans, with the funds then used to support other students.

She added that these measures allowed government support to be extended to all seven universities that had become operational at the time.

Musokotwane Says Fiscal Discipline Helping Government Manage Budget

Finance and National Planning Minister Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane says the fiscal discipline adopted by the government has enabled it to manage the national budget more responsibly.

Dr. Musokotwane said the government has been adjusting its spending patterns in order to manage public resources more effectively and ensure the country operates within its financial means instead of accumulating unsustainable debt.

Speaking in an interview with the media, the minister said strict financial and fiscal discipline has played a key role in improving the country’s economic position.

He added that Zambia’s economy has continued to show signs of improvement as a result of the measures being implemented.

Meanwhile, Dr. Musokotwane acknowledged that the removal of fuel subsidies was a difficult decision for the government.

He explained that despite the move being unpopular, it was necessary in order to free up resources that can now be directed towards important government programmes such as free education, meal allowances and bursaries.

Bwana Kambwili, please confirm you aren’t mad….a lunatic; and who are the thieves in PF?

In this country, at times politicians seem to ‘parrot’ the most outrageous and ludicrous things in their desperate attempt to score a few points or indeed gain political mileage devoid of any semblance of shame even when such things will come to haunt them in the near future.

A good case in point is obviously outspoken, former Roan member of parliament, Chishimba Kambwili who seemingly still remains not far from stirring up controversy or indeed shoving his foot in his mouth.

In a social media video which has since been resurrected from the archives and since gone viral, Kambwili could be heard bragging about certain things that he doesn’t really believe in, typical of any common Zambian politician!

Speaking to Kalani Muchima, who at the time worked for Muvi TV as a talk show host, in his usual fashion, Kambwili obviously had lurid things to share; by this time the outspoken politician had parted company with PF in a firestorm!

“Insinuating that I can go back to PF the same way GBM has done is an insult to me!” he blurted. “I am very principled, am not like these politicians.”

When Muchima put to him he was behaving the same way as his colleague, GBM who had earlier indicated he can never rejoin tukabolala (thieves) in PF only to turn 360 degrees and do the opposite shortly afterwards, he retorted, “I’d refer to myself as being mad, a lunatic if I went back to PF!”

The outspoken politician further elaborated that unless Lungu resigned as PF leader, and unless thieves in PF were arrested and corruption was wiped out completely, and leave the PF the same way they started it, he would never ever go and work under Edgar Lungu.

“Edgar Lungu is not fit to be President of this country and he’ll never be fit to be President of this country!” emphadised, Kambwili.

Well, well, well…..look who was talking. Hasn’t the man from Luanshya since gone back to his vomit?

As we all well know, Kambwili abandoned his party NDC and crawled back to PF well before Lungu’s demise. His conscience did not haunt him about the things he used to say about Lungu – drunkard, corrupt etc! He was more than willing to work with the former head of state to bring down Hichilema for as long as it took. He even took to taking morning jogs with Lungu to repair his broken relationship with him.

Where does this tell us? Can the former cabinet minister confirm he’s not mad or indeed a lunatic for him to have gone back to work with Lungu?

Another earth shattering remark Kambwili made in the video was about not being keen to work with the PF unless all the thieves in the party were arrested! Who are those in PF? Hasn’t Kambwili been vociferous in condemning any arrests made of the suspected PF thieves by the New Dawn Administration?

This is more the reason why we detest mainstream politics as most politicians don’t seem to believe in anything at all…..too many contradictions for our liking.

Mutati launches AI pilot in education

0

Minister of Technology and Science Felix Mutati says integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the education sector will improve the quality of learning and ensure equal access to high-standard education for learners across the country.

Speaking during the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Ministry of Technology and Science and Obrizum Group Ltd on collaboration for a pilot project on AI integration in education, Mr Mutati said the initiative will pilot AI in secondary schools and TEVET institutions to enhance personalized learning and improve academic outcomes.

Mr Mutati explained that the project aligns with government’s broader education reforms aimed at strengthening access and quality following the introduction of free education.

He noted that AI will ensure the quality of education is no longer determined by a learner’s location, whether rural or urban.

“Artificial Intelligence will allow us to bridge the gap in the delivery of quality education by ensuring that every learner, regardless of where they are, has access to the same high standards,” Mr Mutati said.

He added that the AI-powered system will identify individual learning capabilities of each student and deliver tailored content suited to their needs, while also assisting teachers with data-driven insights to focus on areas where learners face challenges.

Mr Mutati further stated that the use of AI will reduce the cost of delivering quality education while improving efficiency.

He said the partnership will begin with a pilot phase in April this year, after which government will assess its impact before scaling nationally.

Meanwhile, Obrizum Group Ltd Chief Executive Officer  Chibeza Agley said the project will support both students and educators by improving the speed and efficiency of teaching while providing deeper insights into learning patterns.

“The goal is to demonstrate how responsible Artificial Intelligence can support teachers and empower learners by making education more adaptive, efficient and productive,” Dr. Agley said.

Fire sweeps through NATSAVE Mongu branch

1

Fire swept through the National Savings and Credit Bank (NATSAVE) in Mongu today.

Western Province Commissioner of Police Rae Hamoonga confirmed the incident, that the fire was noticed around 10:00 hours by a security guard identified as Nyambe Nyambe.

Mr Hamoonga said preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have emanated from the Bank Manager’s office where a solar power backup system is installed.

“Upon receiving the report, a combined team of Police Officers, the fire brigades from Mongu Municipal Council Fire, TAZAMA and National Airports Corporation quickly responded to the scene and found the building engulfed in flames,” he revealed.

The Police Commissioner noted that the fire has since been successfully contained and the bank vault is safe, adding that the value of other property destroyed is yet to be established.

The media reports that Mr Hamoonga commended the swift response by all emergency teams involved in containing the fire and preventing further damage.

Luanshya district recorded over 700 GBV cases in 2025

1

Luanshya District recorded over 700 cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in 2025, with women and girls accounting for about 90 percent of the victims, District Commissioner Paul Malele disclosed.

Mr. Malele said the statistics highlight the need for strengthened justice systems and community support to protect women and girls from violence and discrimination.

Mr Malele called for the need to ensure justice is delivered not only in courts but also within homes, workplaces and communities.

He further stressed the importance of supporting institutions such as victim support units, one-stop centres and other justice systems so survivors can access medical, legal, and psychosocial services without delay.

“In 2025 alone, Luanshya recorded over 700 cases of gender-based violence, with women and girls making up 90 percent of the victims,” Mr. Malele said.

The media reports that the GBV statistics were revealed yesterday during the commemoration of International Women’s Day.

Highlighting progress in women’s empowerment, Mr. Malele disclosed that over 1,800 women in Luanshya have received productivity grants, while 15,000 people have benefitted from social cash transfers, with women accounting for 70 percent of beneficiaries.

He added that 4,175 girls from vulnerable households have been earmarked for support to remain in school and access quality education.

Meanwhile, Luanshya Mayor Charles Mulenga praised government efforts to enhance women’s participation in national leadership.

Mr Mulenga commended President Hakainde Hichilema for assenting to the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Bill No. 7 of 2025, which introduces a mixed-member proportional representation system aimed at increasing the representation of women, youths, and persons with disabilities in Parliament.

“This landmark reform guarantees greater opportunities for women, youths and persons with disabilities to serve in the National Assembly and places women at the centre of decision-making,” Mr Mulenga said.

Zambia hosts Regional energy talks in Lusaka

0

Energy leaders from across Southern Africa have gathered in Lusaka as Zambia hosts the 66th Management Committee meetings of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP).

The week-long meetings in Lusaka have drawn representatives from utilities and market participants from 12 member countries in Southern Africa.

Discussions at the forum are expected to focus on regional electricity trade, infrastructure development and power sector cooperation.

The meetings are being hosted by the national power utility, ZESCO Limited, which last hosted the gathering more than a decade ago.

Energy Minister Makozo Chikote is expected to officially open the regional meeting on Thursday 12 March 2026 at Mulungushi conference center.

SAPP Vice Chairperson, Lioko Sitali, who is also ZESCO Director for transmission and trade said in an interview in Lusaka that the gathering is an event that brings member utilities together to discuss how the region can better utilize shared electricity resources.

“ZESCO is the host utility for the SAPP management committee meetings for 2026, we have twelve member countries and all of them are attending these meetings where working groups sit together to come up with solutions on how generation resources can be utilized across the region,” said Engineer Sitali.

In a separate interview head of commercial trade at Kanona Power Company Limited, Nsofwa Sikanyika, hailed SAPP as a great initiative that enables utilities and market participants to collectively address challenges facing the regional power sector.

“SAPP management meetings are held annually for all participating utilities and operating members to deliberate on issues that affect the Southern African region when it comes to the power sector,” she said.

Ms. Sikanyika noted that many of the energy challenges faced by countries in the region are similar, including generation deficits and transmission constraints.

“When you look at the different countries that form part of the Southern African Power Pool, we find that the challenges are quite similar,” She said.

Ms. Sikanyika highlighted Zambia’s recent electricity deficit as an example of how the regional power pool helps countries support each other.

“When Zambia experienced a deficit in power generation that led to load management across the nation, other utilities within the Southern African Power Pool were quite key in supporting the country,” she noted.

Ms. Sikanyika observed that SAPP remains the most advanced electricity trading system on the continent, providing a model for regional energy cooperation in Africa.

Established in 1995, SAPP enables electricity utilities in member countries to trade surplus power across borders through interconnected transmission networks.

the media reports that the meetings in Lusaka have come at a time when several Southern African countries are grappling with electricity shortages driven by rising demand, drought-affected hydropower generation and infrastructure constraints.

According to industry players, SAPP has become an important platform for countries to cooperate and support one another during energy shortages.

The initiative is widely seen as a key mechanism for addressing Africa’s energy deficit while promoting regional economic integration.

Zambian juvenile detained in Malawi

0

Authorities in Malawi have detained a 12-year-old Zambian juvenile who crossed into the country without legal documentation.

The boy, identified as Patson Mtonga, was cornered in Kasungu National Park while his two friends managed to escape.

The three children, all under the age of 14, had crossed into the park for fishing before encountering a wildlife police patrol officer.

Police identified the juveniles as Patson Mtonga, 12, Gift Mwale, 13, and Matthews Zgambo, 10, all of Chikalema Village in Mwase area.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the matter to the media.

“On 8th March, 2026 at around 19:00 hours, we received a WhatsApp message from Malawi police that a male juvenile believed to be a Zambian national was in their custody,” Mr Mweemba said,

Mr Mwemba said that the boy was caught in Kasungu National Park on 5th March, 2026 around 14:00 hours by a Malawian Wildlife Police Officer on patrol.

The boy’s father, Simon Mtonga, 40, has confirmed that it is his son being held by Malawi authorities.

Mr Mweemba further stated that the matter was not reported at any police station in Zambia by the parents of the three children.

He added that the two other juveniles who escaped have since returned home and informed their parents.

The Police Commissioner said Malawian police, in conjunction with Zambia’s Department of Immigration, are making arrangements to have the juvenile released and repatriated.
