President Hichilema commits to continue serving Zambians with dignity

3

President Hakainde Hichilema has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continue serving Zambians regardless of their political affiliation.

President Hichilema states the reason why distribution of resources such as the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) is equal across the country for all citizens to partake in development.

President Hichilema was speaking during an engagement with United Party for National Development (UPND) Lusaka Province Structures at Mulungushi International Conference Centre, in Lusaka.

The Head of State added that the party has an agenda of working hard and ensuring that all Zambians benefit.

President Hakainde noted that in the last four years he has worked hard to resolve the problems he inherited, including the country’s debt.

The Head of State said that under his leadership, the country was the first to achieve debt restructuring which was sinking the country’s economy.

“Our job based on what we said in opposition for 23 years is to work for all Zambians.

Even during the drought disaster, we have been able to grow our economy at 5.3 percent per year,” he said.

President Hichilema explained that other achievements included the restoration of the law and order, payment of benefits to retirees and the increased CDF to K 40 million Kwacha per constituency.

The Head of State noted that about 2.3 million pupils have gone back to school due to the free education policy, meal allowances in higher learning institutions, construction of student hostels and fighting corruption.

He said that the government is not targeting anyone and there is no tribalism in the fight against corruption, adding that the proceeds have been channeled to developmental areas such as student bursaries, free education and CDF.

President Hichilema stated that all these are happening because Zambians voted him into office and that the journey must continue in order to improve the country.

“This year we have produced the largest amount of maize since independence

I want to thank our farmers across the country for the bumper harvest. We now want to irrigate the country under 500 hectares,” he added.

He encouraged the art of hard work in order to build the country, reminding that out of the 84 by-elections since 2021, 78 have been won as a result of working hard.

And President Hichilema assured that his administration is working towards addressing the electricity challenges by investing in other sources of energy such as solar and coal.

He implored the party structures to mobilise more members so that the party wins by 80 percent in 2026 to continue delivering good results for the people of Zambia.

The President emphasised on unity and discipline to continue, which has kept the party and country at large together.

Meanwhile, Lusaka Province Minister Sheal Mulyata said it was a privilege to meet with the President to strategise going forward.

Ms Mulyata said that members are only waiting for instructions to enhance party mobilisation, stating that the Province will not disappoint in terms of bringing more members to the party.

UPND National Chairman Collins Maoma said that what the President has achieved in the last four years, no one will ever beat the score.

Mr Maoma acknowledged the order and discipline that has been restored in Lusaka stating that even as the country goes towards the 2026 polls, it continues.

Speaking at the same event, UPND Secretary General Batuke Imenda said members are the heart and engine of Zambia.

Mr Imenda reminded the structures that the electoral period has started and members should be ready to ensure the President continues to lead Zambia with more than 80 percent of votes.

And Political Advisor to the President Levy Ngoma was hopeful that through the interaction, President Hichilema gives clear instructions to the various party structures.

Meanwhile, UPND National Youth Chairman Gilbert Liswaniso warned those planning to use the party for personal campaigns during elections and later contest as independent.

Mr Liswaniso said the foundation had already been laid and all members to remain loyal to the party.

UPND Lusaka Province Chairman Obvious Mwaliteta said oppositions are disorganised, a situation he said is making it easy for the party to remain the most popular.

He added that the scores in the last four years included education, health, agriculture, mining, social protection, infrastructure, among other sectors in achieving development.

UPND Lusaka Province Youth Chairperson Anderson Banda said the youths remain committed to support President Hichilema because of his leadership.

Mr Banda encouraged the President to concentrate on delivering more development, adding that youths have benefited from programmes such as youth skills development, empowerment opportunities and job creation.

The women structures from the six districts and 12 constituencies in Lusaka Province remain intact and pledged their support in 2026.

Niger stun Chipolopolo at Levy as World Cup campaign ends

6

The Senior Zambia National Football Team has concluded its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on a disappointing note after losing its final match at home one-nil to Niger.

The 1-0 thumping loss to Niger played at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola in the final Group E FIFA World Cup qualifier saw Chipolopolo fail to end the campaign on a perfect finish , having beaten Tanzania 1 nil last Wednesday.

ZANIS Sports reports that Niger’s Ghana-born forward Daniel Sosah scored the decisive lone goal in 56th minute to stun and silence Chipolopolo and send a message that their earlier 2 – 1 victory in the first leg in Morocco was no fluke.

For Niger, the stakes could not be higher as they moved to 15 points from eight matches.

Despite Chipolopolo no longer in contention for a spot at the 2026 World Cup, the match against Niger looked an opportunity to wrap up the campaign on a high note.

The West African side, known as Mena, relied heavily on teamwork and defensive organisation to keep Zambia at bay while searching for opportunities to strike on the break.

Avram Grant tutored Chipolopolo, huffed a lot of chances and were overrun by the Mena in the second half as they failed to give a thunderous home crowd support a befitting win to end the 2026 World Cup campaign.

Zambia, despite flashes of promise earlier in the qualifiers, saw their hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup end prematurely after a series of inconsistent performances.

Current Group E standings show Morocco leading with 21 points from 7 games, followed by Niger with 15 from 8 games, Tanzania with 10, Zambia with 9, and Congo Brazzaville with one point.

The Chipolopolo Boys will, however, view this fixture as a ‘lesson to restore’ pride and build momentum for upcoming continental competitions.

Sundays’ match offered both teams an opportunity to conclude their campaigns with a statement performance — for Zambia, to show pride and promise for the future and for Niger, to prove their progress on the continental stage;

UPND women in Eastern Province endorse the candidature of President Hakainde Hichilema in the 2026 general elections

5

The United Party for National Development (UPND) Women in Eastern Province have endorsed the candidature of President Hakainde Hichilema in the 2026 general elections.

Speaking during the meeting held in Chipata today, Provincial Women’s Chairperson, Hellen Phiri, said the party was delighted with the numerous developmental projects that were initiated under the leadership of President Hichilema.

Ms Phiri said the UPND women in the province commend President Hichilema for the recent increment of Constituency Development Fund (CDF) from K 36.1 million to K 40 million.

” We are delighted with the numerous developmental projects that have been initiated under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema. The recent increment of CDF from K 36.1 million to K 49 million is just one of the many areas of development under UPND,” she said.

The UPND Provincial Chairlady also said the government improved the living standards of people through various social programmes such as Cash for Work, Enhanced Social Cash Transfer, Sustainable Agriculture Financing Facility (SAFF), amongst many more initiatives aimed at empowering communities.

Ms Phiri noted that the ruling party for the first time in a single term, managed to employ a lot of people in various government sectors, adding that the UPND women were further encouraged by ongoing infrastructure development such as the construction of the Chipata/Chadiza road.

” It is for this reason that we, the UPND women of Eastern Province, pledge our continued support and commitment to rally behind President Hakainde Hichilema and further pledge to endorse his candidature for the 2026 general elections,” she said.

And UPND Special Assistant for Politics and Mobilisation in the office of the Secretary General, Michael Chuzu, said members of the UPND should not talk about intra party election now but concentrate on building the party as they set their eyes on the 2026 elections.

Mr Chuzu challenged party members to get united and stop complaining of resources, saying before the party formed government in 2021, members used to walk during campaigns and they should do the same this time around.

Government committed to end load shedding-Chikote

4

Minister of Energy Makozo Chikote has assured Senior Chief Kopa that the government is working hard to address the load shedding situation in the country.

Speaking when he paid a courtesy call on Senior Chief Kopa this morning ahead of this year’s Chinamanongo traditional ceremony of the Bisa people of Kanchibiya District, Mr Chikote said his Ministry is implementing various interventions to resolve the power challenges faced in the country.

He said he is aware that load shedding affects all Zambians adding that the relationship with traditional leaders was cardinal for the government, describing them as partners in development.

Mr Chikote stated that it is for this reason that the government is working tirelessly to ensure the issue is addressed in a bid to ensure traditional leaders live in a conducive environment.

The Minister said the country’s electricity generation capacity had dropped from 3,800 megawatts to 1,100 megawatts due to reduced water levels, while the national consumption stood at over 2,500 megawatts.

Mr Chikote explained that the government is putting various interventions in place to ensure load shedding becomes a thing of the past.

“Eighty percent of our energy is hydro. The administration is trying to find alternative sources of energy to address this challenge,” Mr Chikote said.

He indicated that there has been increased power usage in the nation through activities such as agricultural irrigation and mining.

Mr Chikote also added that he is aware of the role traditional leaders play in creating peace and unity in the country.

“The royal highnesses are working hard to deliver to their subjects and us as government we are doing the same. There is need for peace and unity, and the government wants traditional leadership to continue encouraging peace and unity in their various Chiefdoms,” he said.

Mr Chikote emphasised the need to work as a team, saying the government had tried to push the agenda of decentralisation, hence the need for chiefs to get involved.

Meanwhile, Senior Chief Kopa, through his representative who is also spokesperson of the Bisa Royal Council, Silvario Kanjela, commended President Hakainde Hichilema for supporting traditional ceremonies.

He said the ceremony was about eating, enjoying and promoting unity among the Bisa people which he said President Hichilema is in support of as it has been seen through the increased Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

He said the increase in CDF had been well received, adding that the government had done a lot that had been noticed in his chiefdom.

Mr Kanjela said the skills development component under the CDF has also been appreciated, with many young people now able to access education.

Meanwhile, various traditional leaders, heads of government departments among others have already arrived at Senior Chief Kopa’s palace ahead of the ceremony.

Mr Mubanga stated that the convergence of e-commerce and AI, therefore presents an exceptional opportunity not only to accelerate economic growth but also redefine trade and innovation to compete on the global stage.

“Digital Commerce is the vehicle, but AI is the powerful engine that will propel us forward.

It enables Zambian businesses to scale up intelligently, breaking down barriers to cross border tradeable creating high-value jobs for our youths” Mr Mubanga said.

He commended the ERITE for organising an event aimed at promoting collaboration, knowledge sharing and partnerships among diverse industry segments and creating a platform for E-Commerce players to connect.

Dr Fundanga who is former Bank of Zambia Governor said its a record breaking decision that has never happened before, while commending the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) for its contributions.

And, Dr Fundanga stated the conference theme, shaping Africa’s digital future in the age of AI ensures that the continent becomes an active architect of its own digital destiny.

Government to implement NEWZA project in Kasama

0

Government with support from the European Union (EU), is set to implement the Nexus Energy and Water Programme for Zambia (NEWZA), which will provide alternative solar power for water treatment plants.

The project, which will be funded by the European Union, will commence next year.

Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation Permanent Secretary Romas Kamanga says the project will be implemented in selected water utility companies across the country.

Mr Kamanga explained that the NEWZA project aims to transition water intake, treatment plants and distribution centers from reliance on ZESCO power to solar energy.

He disclosed that the project aims to reduce electricity costs and improve water supply in communities.

Mr Kamanga said the project will reduce disruptions in water supply caused by load shedding.

He further assured the public that the government remains committed to ending load shedding and ensuring a stable 24-hour power supply.

The Permanent Secretary said this after touring Chambeshi Water Supply and Sanitation Company water projects in Kasama District.

Mr Kamanga also commended the utility company for its improved performance, noting that the company’s operations have significantly reduced water shortages that previously affected many households.

And Chambeshi Water Supply and Sanitation Company Managing Director Jose Chamanika said his company will benefit 6.3 million euros to implement the project.

Mr Chamanika said all the 26 water projects in both Northern and Muchinga Provinces will benefit from the initiative.

He stated that the project will enhance water supply systems and improve access to safe drinking water in various communities in the operation areas.

Mr Chamanika, however, noted that the company continues to face challenges such as load shedding and vandalism, which have negatively affected water supply in some parts of Kasama.

He said the ongoing power outages have reduced water production, while acts of vandalism at water facilities have disrupted service delivery.

Mr Chamanika added that the company is working closely with the Zambia Police Service to sensitise communities about the dangers and consequences of vandalism.

CARITAS urges Zambians to participate in independence celebrations

0

CARITAS in Solwezi District of Northwestern Province, has called on citizens to actively participate in national celebrations and reflect on the country’s journey of peace, unity and development as the country celebrates its 61st Independence anniversary this year.

In an interview with the media in Solwezi today, CARITAS Solwezi Social Programmes Director Noel Haaninga described Independence Day as a significant national milestone that should be embraced by every Zambian, regardless of background or political affiliation.

“This day is not just a public holiday. It is a day to remember how far we have come as a country and to celebrate the progress Zambia has made in the last 61 years,” he said.

Fr Haaninga commended the theme for this year’s celebrations: “61 Years of Peace and Unity; Building a Resilient and Prosperous Zambia” saying it aligns well with CARITAS’ mission and the foundational values that support national development.

“According to us as CARITAS, this theme speaks to four key pillars: peace, unity, resilience and prosperity. Peace and unity are essential for any development to take root. Without them, we cannot build a resilient or prosperous nation,” he said.

Fr Haaninga also applauded past and present governments for their efforts in maintaining peace and national unity since independence in 1964.

He particularly praised President Hakainde Hichilema for his continued commitment to the “One Zambia, One Nation” motto, which he said remains relevant in uniting the diverse population.

“CARITAS Solwezi is committed to promoting peace and unity by upholding human rights and fostering inclusive development in all our programmes across North-Western Province,” he said.

He stressed the importance of embracing diversity and ensuring that no one, especially the vulnerable, is left behind in the country’s developmental agenda.

The Director also made a passionate appeal to the Church and other faith-based organisations to remain firm and united in speaking the truth, especially on issues of national interest.

“A church that is not principled is a danger to the nation because it can be swayed in any direction. The Church must be the conscience of the people, speaking with a united, prophetic voice. What is wrong must be condemned by all churches and what is right must be praised, without fear or favor,” he said.

Fr Haaninga further lamented the continued use of young people as tools of political violence, particularly during the election period.

He said it was unfortunate that politicians often exploit the energy and vulnerability of youths for their selfish gain.

“Young people make up the majority of our population and must be protected, guided and engaged in meaningful economic and peace-building initiatives. Politicians should stop using youths for violence and instead empower them to be agents of change and development, just like our forefathers who fought for our freedom,” he said.

As the Nation draws closer to Independence Day, CARITAS Solwezi is urging all Zambians to take part in the commemorative events, not only as a show of patriotism, but also as an opportunity to recommit to the values that have held the country together for over 60 decades.

Mundubile promises jobs, unity and poverty reduction if elected

Patriotic Front (PF) member of Parliament Brian Mundubile has declared his readiness to lead the opposition into the 2026 general election, saying the United Party for National Development (UPND) government has “completely failed” to deliver on its promises. Speaking on Hot FM’s Red Hot Breakfast programme, the Mporokoso MP expressed that Zambians are weary of economic hardship, rising poverty, and unemployment. He argued that the current administration has lost touch with ordinary citizens and needs to be replaced by leaders with a people-centred agenda. To illustrate his point, he recounted stories from everyday Zambians struggling to make ends meet, emphasizing the growing frustration among the populace. Moreover, he highlighted the need for accountability, urging citizens to be more engaged in the political process to ensure their voices are heard.

Mundubile told listeners he was driven by a desire to serve the country and correct what he called the government’s failures. “The UPND has failed to inspire the people of Zambia,” he said. He discussed specific instances where the government had promised development but failed to deliver, such as in infrastructure and healthcare. “I have looked at the gaps and many failures on the part of government and realised that I can make a difference. My first goal is to put Zambia first and prioritise Zambians,” Mundubile asserted. He proposed detailed plans for reforms in education and healthcare, committing to ensure that every Zambian has access to quality services.

He said rural areas remain trapped in poverty despite successive anti-poverty programmes. “Poverty levels average 50 to 60 per cent, but in Mporokoso, Kasama and other rural areas, it is as high as 76 per cent. Whatever you do, you need solutions that create employment,” he added. Mundubile elaborated on various initiatives he intends to implement, such as microfinance programs aimed at empowering local entrepreneurs and enhancing agricultural productivity. He believes that investing in rural development is crucial for the overall economic growth of the nation, and he shared success stories of individuals who have transformed their lives through such initiatives.

The law-maker criticised the government for failing to generate jobs or expand opportunities for youth and women. He stated that economic injustices and division had left citizens hopeless and called for mobilisation to remove the UPND from office next year. Mundubile highlighted the importance of creating a conducive environment for business and entrepreneurship, advocating for policies that support small and medium enterprises. He expressed concern over the youth unemployment crisis in Zambia, proposing partnerships with private sector stakeholders to facilitate job creation and skill development programs.

Mundubile said his ambition to lead the PF and contest the presidency remained intact following the death of former president Edgar Lungu in June. He promised to pursue policies that encourage investment in agriculture and mining to achieve sustainable employment and poverty reduction. He explained how these sectors could be catalysts for economic transformation by attracting both local and foreign investments. Furthermore, he pledged to implement reforms that ensure the equitable distribution of resources generated from these industries, prioritizing the needs of vulnerable communities.

He also urged opposition parties to present a united front based on shared patriotism and service to the nation. “This ambition is driven by patriotism,” he said. “We need leaders who will prioritise the country before themselves.” Mundubile emphasized the need for collaboration among various political entities to enhance democratic governance and effectiveness in addressing the nation’s challenges. He expressed hope for a new political culture that promotes transparency and accountability, inviting citizens to hold their leaders to higher standards.

Mundubile’s declaration sets the stage for intense competition within the PF as the party seeks to rebuild after Lungu’s death and re-establish itself as a credible alternative to the ruling UPND. He outlined his vision for the party, focusing on revitalizing its grassroots network and engaging with voters to restore trust and confidence in the political system. As the 2026 elections approach, Mundubile remains committed to championing the interests of the Zambian people and hopes to foster a political environment that encourages active participation and informed decision-making among citizens. Ultimately, his goal is to create a Zambia where every citizen can thrive, and he believes that with the right leadership, this vision is attainable. mundubile

Archbishop….is seizure of Icipaso the reason for your ‘beef-meat’ with Bally?

10

This past week, some embarrassing news, which we suspect has definitely left an Ostrich egg on someone’s face, emerged. On Monday, the Economic and Financial Crimes Court condemned former Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) Commissioner General, Kingsley Chanda, to 6 years in prison for irregularly awarding Patriotic Front sympathizers, including the Lusaka Archbishop, Alick Banda, government vehicles. Ba DEC immediately swung into action and seized a Toyota Hilux from the Archbishop, registration number ALF 7734.

These impressive SUVs, commonly known as “lfipaso” in our local parlance, don’t come that cheap…..they can cost quite an arm and a leg!

One is therefore left with no option, but to wonder the thrust of the Archbishop’s seemingly continued antagonism, bitterness and cantankerous attitude towards the New Dawn Administration? Not so long ago, a meeting was called by State House with Catholic Bishops to iron-out perceived differences or misunderstandings. Archbishop was conspicuous is his absence, when he was actually a regular guest during the days of PF in power. What do we make of this?

September 29th is a special day in the church calendar as it is the day of the Archangels . On this day, the church honors the three most important archangels: Michael, Gabriel and Raphael.

This year, the Archbishop used the occasion to pray for unity in the nation and against ethnic divisions!

“We call to an end the current divisive politics that have beleaguered our nation….”prayed the Archbishop.

Aikona man! Archbishop Banda is a wrong person to preach about peace and unity in the nation! Where was the Archbishop, when out of 30 cabinet ministers, President Lungu allocated a paltry 4 slots to the so-called Zambezi provinces? How come the Archbishop chose to look the other way when President Lungu recklessly gave all the 31 Permanent Secretary jobs to his kith and kin, save for 3 for the said provinces? Isn’t a scandal that President Lungu could only dispatch 3 individuals from Central, Western, North Western and Southern provinces into the foreign missions? How come the Archibishop chose to remain mute in the face of such injustice?

Please spare us a moment Archbishop; we are far intelligent and much wiser to read between the lines. Try next time, Sir!

Safety on the Road – Stage 4: Infrastructure Gaps

0

A campaign powered by 1xBet

In the heart of Zambia’s towns and villages, thousands of road users navigate daily challenges, not because of traffic jams or heavy weather, but because of what’s missing. Crosswalks. Streetlights. Proper signs. Sidewalks. It’s not about what’s broken, it’s about what hasn’t been built yet.

This is the focus of the fourth stage of the “Safety on the Road” campaign by 1xBet– held with the support of the NGO Safety for People on the Move. Together, they aim to draw national attention to the lack of basic road infrastructure, and to encourage open dialogue on how to fix it.

What’s Missing Can Be Dangerous

Imagine a road at night in a small rural area with no street lighting. A motorcyclist tries to avoid potholes while a pedestrian walks along the edge, with no sidewalk or protective curb. These aren’t rare cases – they are everyday realities for millions. Poor infrastructure affects everyone: drivers, cyclists, children, and the elderly.

When roads lack markings, intersections turn into guessing games. When there’s no traffic light, priority becomes a matter of risk. When there’s no safe sidewalk, walking turns into a gamble. These missing elements translate directly into higher accident rates and reduced mobility, especially for vulnerable groups.

Zambians Speak Up

To amplify local voices, in the coming weeks, the project will feature:
• A social media poll to gather local opinions
• An educational quiz on how infrastructure saves lives
• Reels and storytelling from bloggers navigating unmarked intersections
• A TV program with experts discussing how safe roads impact tourism and community life
• A community challenge: #1xbetRoadFix, where participants share photos of unsafe or poorly maintained roads

1xBet: Supporting Safe Roads, One Step at a Time

As a brand deeply committed to social responsibility, 1xBet views this campaign not as advertising, but as meaningful action. Through storytelling, infographics, and real experiences from the streets and beyond, this stage focuses on awareness and empowerment.
“Road safety begins with awareness and accountability,” said the 1xBet team. “We believe that real change starts when people talk, share, and take action. Supporting this campaign means supporting every driver, cyclist, and pedestrian who deserves safer streets. For 1xBet, social responsibility is about giving back to the communities that inspire us every day.”

In previous stages, Safety on the Road explored themes such as pedestrian safety and responsible driving. Now, it turns attention to the roads themselves – and to the risks that come from years of underdeveloped infrastructure.

Together with Safety for People on the Move NGO, the campaign aims to inspire local change – step by step, stage by stage, street by street.

Prizes for Engagement

To encourage participation and celebrate community voices, this stage also includes special rewards for the most active contributors:
1st place – 10,000 ZMW
2nd place – 6,000 ZMW
3rd place – 4,000 ZMW
Total prize pool for the whole project: 100,000 ZMW
