Upclose with Singer/legal Practitioner Kanji

kanji4

Known for the album she released almost ten years ago under the Sling Beats label featuring songs such as Mr Big Star and Chi Daddy, Kanji makes her return and this time with a gospel offering.

She is also a legal Practitioner who believes in the value and worth of education. The need to go to school cannot be over emphasized. When one is given an opportunity to learn and upgrade themselves, one must seize it with both hands. Education is power; it is the spring board from which one can be propelled to achieve great things. It is the foundation, the root from which excellence germinates and is built.

A strong believer in the worth and dignity of a woman.  Kanji is passionate about female role models who inspire a positive message especially on the younger generation. To build a sense of worth and self-esteem in the girls and women of this generation, a richness and fullness of character, that you do not have to conform to the latest trends, the bubblegum whims that toss you around and lead you to a place called nowhere. To restore the dignity and honour that was bestowed upon Eve and all the generations that flow from her. That to truly be loved and feel loved you must first have love for self. After all  it is that  ‘love your neighbour as you love yourself..” so then, love begins with love of self. Proverbs 31 is the definitive scripture of what or who a WOMAN is.

KAPA187:  You first came onto the scene with your hit singles “Mr. big star” and “Chi Daddy”. Having achieved that success, what prompted you to stop music in favor of furthering your education?

KANJI:  I wanted to pursue my profession as a legal practitioner and that demanded a lot of my time and attention. As a young advocate learning the ropes I found it increasingly difficult to do both the music and work so having invested so much in my school I thought it prudent to focus on my career.

KAPA187:  What would you say to successful artists who feel like they do not need a formal education because their talent is already sustaining them?

KANJI:  You always need education. It sets you apart and helps you to be a better thinker and ultimately a better person. You cannot deliberately decide to forgo your education. Given the opportunity I encourage all to put it as a priority.

KAPA187:   Being a female legal practitioner, what words of encouragement would you give to young women about venturing into seemingly male dominated industries?

KANJI:  I do not believe that anyone is limited in any way from doing anything based on their gender provided that the opportunity is presented to them. Women are capable of taking up professional roles and leadership roles previously thought to be the premise of men. I do not place a limitation on what I can and cannot do.

KAPA187:   What made you decide to get back to music?

KANJI:  My faith. I am a Christian and I felt increasingly in my heart that God had given me the gift and ability of music for a reason. That is not something that I should hide or throw away and to do so is an affront to my maker who in his infinite wisdom saw it fit to bless me in this way. Not for my own acclaim or for fame but to his glory. So that people can see how big, how awesome and amazing God is. In a nutshell, I could not live a completely fulfilled life if I could not do this thing which is very much a part of who I am.

KAPA187:  Your comeback release was called “Zanga”, which is a wonderful album, with its gospel influenced afro-pop/R&B sound. Being away from music for a long time, was it difficult to record the album? And what prompted the new direction in your music, as opposed to going back to what originally made you famous.

KANJI : Thanks I am grateful that you like the album. So the reason I came back to it is basically for the reasons already stated in my answer to question 4 above. When I took a break I really just stopped and even though I missed it I did not see myself coming back to it. If I was not singing music to glorify God, I would not be doing this music again.

kanji2

KAPA187:  Two songs I really love on the album are “Nidaliseni” and “Intungulushi”. What was the concept behind those two songs?

KANJI:  Nidaliseni is based on the story of Jacob when the bible in Genesis depicts him as having wrestled with God and he said to God “I will not let go unless you bless me.” Its an inspiring account of Jacob’s strength, his faith and resilience even in a situation of great hardship. He did not let go of God infact the harder his circumstances became the harder he clung to God. And in the end God rewarded his faith by pronouncing a blessing upon him.

Intungulushi is a song about living a Christ led life.  Acknowledging that Jesus Christ is our saviour, he is the shepherd of our faith and our leader in all things.

KAPA187:   Gospel music that has a “Secular” sound to it has been criticized as not being “true gospel music”. What is your take on that?

KANJI:  all music has genre and category I suppose. Depending on what you like to listen to, sometimes even your mood and temperament it will dictate whether you  listen to praise and worship or something more up tempo. There’s gospel hip hop that ministers to people and carries a lot of meaning and depth, it just depends. Some people prefer hymns, some like the music to have some soul in it, others like it to sound contemporary.  It all depends.

The essential message of the music must be the gospel itself that is what defines the music and art of gospel music. I realise I may not have answered the question the way you may have hoped but I believe I have made my point.

kanji3

KAPA187:   Apart from being a singer/performer and legal practitioner you are also an entrepreneur running your own business. How do you manage to keep things balanced?

KANJI:  “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.”

Yes I take that scripture very literally. When you enjoy doing what you do it doesn’t actually feel like a big stress on your time. You just make time. Besides I prefer figuring out how to manage all the things I have to do in the time I have available as opposed to not having anything to do with my time. That is just the type of mind that I have.

KAPA187:   You are an inspiration to many young people. Do you take time to talk to /mentor some youths about entrepreneurship and utilizing their God given talents?

KANJI:  I do, but probably not as much as I should.  Moving forward I intend to do more mentoring and getting more speaking engagements so that I am able to share some of my experiences beyond the music.

KAPA187:   This year you have been working with Proflight as one of the brand ambassadors in their Fly 5 campaign. How has the experience been, what have you learnt from it.

KANJI:  Being a brand ambassador is definitely a plus and does a lot for my portfolio not just as an artist but as a personality. I think that the Proflight Fly5 campaign is a commendable initiative and I can only hope that more corporate entities will see the value of working with the arts in a mutually beneficial partnership. I have had a worthwhile experience so far, in that on the one hand I get an opportunity to promote our very own local airline and on the other hand I get a platform to expose who I am to a potentially new demographic of people.

kanji

KAPA187:   Having been around the country with Proflight, what have you observed in regards to Zambians tourism potential.

KANJI:  Its definitely immense. There is so much that Zambia has to offer. I had an opportunity to go to South Luangwa National Park to shoot our first video for the song Zambian Skies and it was breath takingly beautiful.

KAPA187:   Musically, what do you have in store for your fans this year?

KANJI:  I have every intention of releasing more music. I will be getting back into the studio . I have been doing a lot of writing and basically spending my time meditating and trying to tap into what God’s plan is for me musically and specifically for this next record.

KAPA187:   Any last words

KANJI: Just thank you for the opportunity I appreciate you taking the time out to do this interview. And to everyone who has supported me and been with me on this journey I say thank you. None of this would mean much without you all. God bless

Bembas are now plotting to take over UPND-Davies Chama

171
Davies Chama
Davies Chama

PF Secretary General Davies Chama has reacted to the appointment of Kasama Central MP Geoffrey Mwamba as UPND Vice President by stating that this is part of a scheme by some Bembas to take over UPND.

Mr Chama who said that the PF is not shaken by Mr Mwamba’s appointment said he has been aware of such schemes for some time now.

He said Mr Mwamba is no longer a member of the PF because he was expelled adding that he is only clinging on to the party because of the ongoing court process.

“I don’t want to prejudice what is before our courts but I would like to state that GBM does not belong to the PF anymore because he was expelled,” Mr Chama said.

He added that some Bemba politicians have confided in him that removing Hakainde Hichilema from the UPND is the best solution because they feel Mr Hichilema cannot win the republican presidency.

“I was on a plane from South Africa with Mucheleka (Independent MP Patrick Mucheleka) and he told me that the Bembas who campaigned for HH in the January 20 election have realised that he is a liability and want to kick him out of UPND,” he said.

Mr Chama added, “Mucheleka told me that the Bembas will come together and take over the UPND using GBM’s money and influence in Northern Province because HH is not sellable and looking at what has happened now, it confirms what Mucheleka told me on the plane.”

He said the Bembas hope to use their influence to kick out Tongas from the leadership of the UPND by placing themselves in key leadership positions.

“This is just the beginning, you will see how the Bembas will infiltrate the UPND and take over the leadership and it is laughable that HH doesn’t seem to know what the Bembas are scheming.”

Mr Mwamba who is commonly known as GBM on Wednesday accepted the appointment as UPND Vice President but revealed that he will remain serving as Kasama PF MP.

Importation of Wrong Crude Oil Smacks of Corruption

30

FDD President Edith Nawakwi
FDD President Edith Nawakwi

FDD President Edith Nawakwi says the imported wrong crude oil smacks of corruption of the highest order and has far reaching economic consequences for the country.

Ms. Nawakwi said both republican President Edgar Lungu and Energy Minister Christopher Yaluma should be held responsible as the importation of oil is under the preserve of the Government.

“This smacks of the deepest scam were our people have put money in their pockets and left the country to be injured. In another country the Minister of Energy and all involved would have been fired by now that is why am saying that this should be led on the door step of the Minister of Defence (the President). He is aware of what has happened, they are shrouding it in ‘we are investigating’ what is there to investigate? All of us have the reports and we all know what is happening at indeni.

This is like going in a market and buying salaula. They actually went shopping for salaula crude. No one should hound wink the Zambian people and say that the crude oil is faulty, faulty is the word you use on something which is not properly made so for anyone to use the word faulty is actually a confirmation that we bought salaula crude. Faulty products are usually auctioned as seconds.” Ms. Nawakwi said.

She challenged Government to tell the nation how the country ended up in this mess when there is a clearly spelled out procedure for procuring oil.

“We need to know the following; Who issued the contract of supply and to who?
Certainly the onus is on the Minister of Energy because we have been told that the supply of feed stock is the preserve of the Government. President Lungu and his Cabinet should come out in the open and own up to this scam.

When loading there is an inspection, we need to know who inspected the cargo. The inspections will confirm the content of what you loaded. When the ship sails from Oman as in this case you expect it to be on the Indian Ocean and many thing s happen at sea, some times ships are swapped or cargo is swapped so when offloading you need your Inspector to inspect and confirm that what they loaded in Oman is what is has arrived at the point of discharge when that is done you can discharge otherwise you can reject the cargo if it is not what you loaded.

The inspector is fully aware of this process so we need answers, who are our inspectors who inspected the cargo because it should not even have been offloaded.”

She explained the specifications of the feed stock suitable for the Indeni refinery.

“The Zambian refinery can only refine spiked crude which is a mixture of refined heavy crude (refined crude oil) and light crude oil because our refinery is made in such a way that we predetermine how much Diesel we get, Petrol, Jet A1 fuel and other products we need to get so we have to make a cocktail, when you say spike it means a cocktail of heavy crude and light crude oil.

The specifications of this Italian built refinery was made so that you put crude oil which will give us certain products now if you don’t have that then we have a problem. The pipe line was tailored to transport spiked crude if you don’t have spiked crude the pipe line will corrode as it has happened because they brought scam, the worst leftover and in the leftovers you have alot of acid.”

She outlined the repercussions of importing dirty crude oil by the PF Government.

“The consequences of the actions by this Government are the following; Damage to motor vehicle engines by the users of these products in due course because the hydro cracker is not able to pick out all the acidity from the products that will come out of that crude oil. They will not be able to treat it fully and remove all the impurities.

The second problem is that they will not get enough products even if you were to refine the remaining 115000 metric tons which is not yet processed. We are bound to have shortages and more price hikes of diesel and patrol because they will be taking out more heavy fuel oil than products. They will have huge stocks of heavy fuel oil. Maybe be out of 115000 metric tons even 50,000 metric tonnes will be heavy fuel oil were are they going to store it because most users have migrated from heavy fuel oil to electric fired boilers.

You will also see planes begin to redirect to other countries for refueling because the the don’t want their engines to be damaged by contaminated Jet A1 fuel.

The third problem is that the hydro cracker is not able to take products which are contaminated. It will burn and you will find that Indeni has to shut down every week to prevent the hydro cracker from burning, even the pipes through which they are pumping this contaminated oil will begin to corrode so they have to continuously replace them or clean them. Ideally they should run uninterrupted for 3 months or 6 months if they have done prementenace work.”

Ms. Nawakwi also noted that restarting the refinery is a big technical challenge which is costly and exposes the lives of engineers to grave danger.

“This country is exposing the young engineers to grave danger. You don’t start and stop the refinery every week. That process will cost Indeni K10million. It is never done anywhere in the world that everyweek you shut down and restart a refinery, it is technically impossible.”

Ms. Nawakwi was commenting on the importation of ” faulty crude oil” by government.

Lungu Should Walk The “One Zambia, One Nation” Talk – Nevers

Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) President Dr Nevers Sekwila Mumba has said that the tensions that have been created between the people of Southern Province and the Patriotic Front (PF) Government are completely unnecessary and could have been avoided had President Lungu demonstrated strong leadership and if all the leaders in the PF genuinely towed the much talked about “One Zambia, One Nation” ideology.

Speaking in Luangwa yesterday during meetings with the MMD party structures, Dr. Mumba said the unfortunate remarks attributed to PF Secretary General Davies Chama were shocking, reckless, provocative and totally misplaced and have absolutely no place in a peaceful and united country like Zambia.

Dr. Mumba said President Lungu failed to correctly address this matter by firmly condemning and disciplining Mr. Chama to give the people of Southern Province confidence that the “One Zambia, One Nation” is not just a cosmetic, convenient and empty slogan for political expediency. He said the President missed a golden opportunity to show leadership and create confidence in the people of Southern Province and indeed the nation at large that he is sincere in all the pronouncements he has been making against tribalism since he came into power.

The MMD President further said the tension that has followed in Southern Province, culminating in the Tonga Traditional Establishment going to the extent of calling a “Chuundu Chaitwa” is a very dangerous precedent never experienced in the history of Zambia, not even during the tense Cha Cha Cha days at the height of the ANC and UNIP tensions in the early sixties.

Dr. Mumba expressed his disappointment that President Lungu is now committing himself to unrealistic promises to chiefs which could have been avoided had he immediately and appropriately condemned Mr Chama in no uncertain terms, followed up by disciplinary action. He said it appears the President does not seem to be “walking the talk”.

“We feel that offering Southern Province chiefs to jump-start some stalled development projects promised by the late President Sata, is a clear demonstration of poor and weak leadership and is a pathetic knee-jerk reaction which only further traps the government in a corner of over over-spending even when it is a known fact that it is running a huge deficit.

“President Lungu must begin to assert and demonstrate strong leadership to Zambians to allay the concerns of rising voices that the country is on Auto-Pilot and that he is weak and has no control of the PF hierarchy and the nation at large,” said Dr. Mumba.

FORMER Tourism and Arts Minister Sylvia Masebo is today expected to appear for questioning at the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) offices in Lusaka.

Ms Masebo, who is also Chongwe Member of Parliament (MP), has been summoned by the Commission to answer to issues bordering on corruption.

She was scheduled to appear at the ACC head offices for questioning at 09:00 hours yesterday but was excused as she was attending to other matters.

“I am not appearing at ACC today, I have been excused but am appearing tomorrow, I think in the afternoon,” Ms Masebo said in an interview.

Meanwhile, ACC acting public relations manager Dorothy Mwanza declined to divulge details of Ms Masebo’s summoning to journalists who gathered at the Commissions offices awaiting her arrival.

Ms Mwanza said information related to the former Minister’s case was highly confidential and could not be easily released to the public for fear of jeopardising investigations.

“I can confirm that Ms Masebo has been summoned to answer to issues bordering on corruption. I cannot say anything other than that as this is the official position ,” she said.

GOVERNMENT says it is happy with Archbishop of Lusaka, Telesphore Mpundu’s remarkable health improvement since his evacuation to South Africa on Sunday.

President Edgar Lungu ordered the evacuation of Archbishop Mpundu to South Africa for specialist treatment following the clergy’s admission to Lusaka’s University Teaching Hospital (UTH).

Foreign Affairs Minister Harry Kalaba and his Tourism and Arts counterpart, Jean Kapata yesterday visited the archbishop at Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa where he is admitted.

This is contained in a statement released by press secretary at the Zambian High Commission in South Africa, Nicky Shabolyo.

Mr Kalaba said he was happy with the impressive progress made by Archbishop Mpundu especially that he was in high spirits.

He said government was committed to ensuring that Archbishop Mpundu received the necessary support so that he could quickly recover and return to his duties.

“We were worried before we came and we were constantly asking the High Commissioner how you are doing. Now we see that you are in high spirits and we feel relaxed” Mr Kalaba told the Archbishop.

Mr Kalaba further said that it was government’s prayer for Prelate’s quick recovery so that he could continue with his good works for the nation.
“Otherwise, we are all well at home and everyone is looking forward to your return,” he said.

Ms Kapata said Government was thankful for the life of Archbishop Mpundu and would continue praying for his quick recovery.

A jovial Archbishop Mpundu told the two ministers that he was feeling much better and was honoured and grateful to President Edgar Lungu for facilitating his evacuation to South Africa.

“I am feeling much better; I am feeling on top of the world. I am in high spirits and with this mood, I can even leave hospital now. The facilitation has been excellent. Please convey my personal gratitude to His Excellency the President. Words are inadequate to express my thanks,” the Archbishop said.

Margaret Mpundu who is Archbishop Mpundu’s sister and Chairperson of the Priest Council, Father Leonard Namuhumba have been at the archbishop’s bedside.

Out-going Zambia’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Muyeba Chikonde and officers from the High Commission accompanied the two ministers to the hospital.

Don’t politicize General Kanene’s pardoning-CCO

28

The Christian Coalition Organisation (CCO) has appealed to the public not to politicize President Edgar Lungu’s pardoning of musician Clifford Dimba commonly known as General Kanene.

Secretary General for the Coalition John Mwendapole said people must accept the pardoning of general Kanene and not politicizing the issue.

Rev. Mwendapole said President Lungu’s decision to pardon General Kanene is aimed at making him useful to the society instead of being in prison.

He said despite General Kanene being behind bars, the musician composed songs that informed the public about his experience in prison and preached messages against vices in society.

Rev. Mwendapole said it was unfortunate that after a week of being pardoned, General Kanene allegedly battered his third wife over a marital dispute.

He has since urged non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to help in counseling the prisoners physically, emotionally and spiritually as soon as they are released from prison.

Rev. Mwendapole noted that when prisoners are exposed to a lot of things that can be a danger to the society hence counseling can help to protect the people.

Kambwili urges law enforcers to intensely fight piracy

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services has called on law enforcement agencies to intensify the fight against piracy in Zambia.

Minister of Information Chishimba Kambwili said law enforcers should strengthen the fight against piracy especially in Lusaka and Copperbelt provinces where the scourge has proved to be rife.

He said this in a speech read on his behalf by his deputy Forrie Tembo during the Zambia Music Copyright Protection Society (ZAMCOPS) 15th Annual General Meeting in Lusaka today.

He also advised musicians to produce a lot of music to meet the high content demand that will arise as Zambia migrates from analogue to digital television broadcasting.

Mr. Kambwili added that musicians and other artists must take advantage of the digital migration and produce quality works which can sell to broadcasting houses.

The Minister has since acknowledged the importance which ZAMCOPS attaches to the role of promoting and protecting the music industry.

And ZAMCOPS Board Chairperson Edify Hamukale said the law enforcement on music piracy was not adequate to completely eradicate the vice.

Dr. Hamukale said this state of affairs was ZAMCOPS’ main frustration because its members and government were being robbed of significant income through piracy.

He has since requested government to consider introducing blank tape levy to control piracy through flash discs, DVDs and other recording devices.

He has meanwhile thanked ZAMCOPS members, government and other stakeholders for the continued support to its growth and to the development of the music industry in Zambia.

Dr. Hamukale said the music industry has potential to help reduce poverty and unemployment in the country and should thus be supported by all well-meaning Zambians.
