Pardoned General Kanene in Orange

STATEMENT BY THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE NON GOVERNMANTAL ORGANISATIONS CORDINATING COUNCIL (NGOCC) MS. SARA H. LONGWE DURING A MEDIA BRIEFING ON THE DECSION BY PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU TO PARDON GENERAL KANENE

MEMBERS OF THE PRESS,

NGOCC NETWORK MEMBER ORGANISATIONS PRESENT,

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,

On Thursday, July 16th 2015, President Edgar Lungu pardoned a convicted girl child defiler, Clifford Dimba aka General Kanene who was serving an 18-year-jail sentence. General Kanene was convicted by a competent court of law that he molested and abused a girl child below the age of 16.

Clearly, President Lungu is increasingly becoming a danger not only to the nation but more specifically to the welfare of the girl child in Zambia. While well meaning Zambians are busy fighting gender based violence (GBV), and more specifically child defilement, President Pungu seems to be comfortable with the increased cases of child abuse as demonstrated in his release of general kanene. President Lungu must be reminded that he was elected to secure and safeguard the interests of all Zambians, including girl children.

President Lungu’s appetite to keep himself in power at any cost, even if it means embracing girl child defilers, is appalling and disgusting to say the least. The recent presidential pardons of criminals for political expedience by the pf government is now threatening the safety of this country especially the vulnerable girl children.

The decision by the president to pardon a convicted child defiler, is not only an insult to the women of Zambia, but a serious draw back in the fight against child defilement and GBV.

What the president is saying in his pardon is that as long as anyone is in good books with him or his party, they can abuse and defile children and they will not face the wrath of the law. It is unfortunate that at the time Zambia needs leadership in the fight against defilement the head of state is in the forefront abetting and encouraging people to abuse girl children.

While we appreciate that kanene may have reformed and is now championing the fight against gbv, the reality is so have many other prisoners who have committed various crimes who will serve their full sentence .

We call upon President Lungu to seriously introspect and reflect on his decision to release a convicted defiler. President lungu is seriously undermining the judicial system by selectively releasing convicts who he has a personal interest in. While, the law gives the president power to pardon convicts, we sincerely believe that president Lungu is abusing his power, for political expedience. Surely what is so special with general kanene to be released after committing such a heinous crime against a girl child? Did president lungu think about the victim when he decided to pardon General Kanene?

The girl child that was defiled by Mr Dimba will not receive any justice now that the president has decided to pardon him.

As long as President Lungu remains the head of state, the fight against gbv will remain a pipe dream. We challenge all the women in the Patriotic Front (PF) government to voice against this injustice against the girl child. If President Lungu and the pf want the support of the women, this decision must be reversed immediately.

It is for this reason that the women’s movement continues to advocate for a new people driven republican constitution that will regulate the powers of the president. The current constitution gives too much power to the president which is not good for the country.

NGOCC will remain consistent in demanding for the enactment of the new constitution through a national referendum. We primarily demand for the enactment of the new constitution through a national referendum because an expanded bill of right will enhance and advance the rights and status of women and children.

The only solution to the many problems that the country is facing is to enact the new constitution before 2016 tripartity elections. Otherswise, individuals will continue to abuse the presidential office.

As an organization we will be left with no option but to go to the public and explain what kind of danger Edgar Lungu is to the women and girl children of this country.

Human Rights Commission comments on Commutation of Death Sentences and HH Attack

HRC

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COMMUTATION OF SENTENCES FOR DEATH ROW INMATES BY HIS EXCELLENCY THE PRESIDENT OF ZAMBIA MR. EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU

The Human Rights Commission is delighted at the move by His Excellency the President Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu taken to commute the death sentences of 332 death row inmates to life imprisonment.

The commutation is a clear demonstration that President will not depart from the direction taken by his predecessors of the de facto moratorium. In light of this action, the Commission calls upon Government to take the extra step and accede to the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights which requires State Parties to abolish the death penalty. Further, Zambia needs to domesticate the Option Protocol to ensure that the Judiciary do not continue handing down death sentences as a matter of law.

The Commission reiterates its opposition to the maintenance of the death penalty as submitted to the technical committee on drafting the Zambian Constitution in 2012. Human Rights practice today guides that a rehabilitative approach to criminal offenders should be adopted as opposed to the traditional approaches of retribution, vengeance and punishment under which the death penalty falls.

The Human Rights Commission has repeatedly raised concerns about over-crowding in prisons which exposes inmates to inhumane conditions. It is encouraging to note government’s willingness to address the problem of congestion in prisons. The Commission believes that the legislative and administrative measures announced by the president to address conditions in prisons across the country will go a long way in creating the desired environment for inmates in line with the standard minimum rules for the treatment of prisoners.

ATTACK ON UPND LEADER HAKAINDE HICHILEMA BY PF CADRES

The Human Right Commission condemns in strongest terms the reported violent acts of Patriotic Front (PF) cadres on the Copperbelt Province who forced their way into Icengelo Radio on Wednesday evening to stop a radio programme where the United Party for National Development Party (UPND) President Mr. Hakainde Hichilema was scheduled to speak.

The Commission is disappointed with PF cadres’ attack on Mr. Hakainde Hichilema and interference with Radio Icengelo’s scheduled programme.

It is unfortunate that the cadres have continued to behave violently and conducting themselves in a manner that is inconsistent with the stance taken by His Excellency the President Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu’s on political violence. For as long as cadres are not punished for these acts, there will be no end to political violence. The Commission calls upon the PF party leadership to translate the commitment to stop political violence in action by sanctioning the cadres behind the attack so that they understand there are no rewards for perpetrating such acts.

Two weeks ago, TAZARA workers went on strike demanding for their four months’ salary arrears.

Peasant farmer convicted for cultivating marijuana

A 42 year old peasant farmer of Katuta chiefdom in Mwense district of Luapula province has been sentenced to 30 months imprisonment with hard labour for unlawful cultivation of psychotropic substance.

Before principle resident magistrate Yvonne Nalomba was Miyambo Katopwa of Lubebe village who was charged for unlawful cultivation of marijuana contrary to section 9 of the narcotic drugs and psychotropic substance chapter 96 of the laws of Zambia.

Facts before the courts were that Katopwa on March 5, 2015 cultivated 528 kilogrammes of marijuana, a herbal product of cannabis without lawful authority.

And in count two, particulars were that Katopwa on March 5, 2015 trafficked in 180 Kilogrammes of marijuana contrary to section 6 chapter 96 of the laws of Zambia.

Katopwa admitted the charge for count one but denied the charge for count two.

In mitigation, Katopwa requested for lenience as he was the first offender and that he was married with children who are still at school.

However, Principle Resident Magistrate Nalomba said though he was the first offender and readily admitted the charge, the quantity of marijuana was too much.

She then sentenced him to 30 months imprisonment with hard labour, effective the date of arrest in order to deter others from committing a similar offence.

And for count two, Magistrate Nalomba re-allocated the case to Magistrate Moses Mulenga for continued trial.

North-West PF disowns its provincial secretary

4

The Patriotic Front (PF) provincial youth committee in North-Western province has disassociated itself from remarks made by its secretary Eunice Kapenda that it intends to petition President Edgar Lungu for dissolving the committee.

PF provincial vice youth chairman Jackson Kungo told ZANIS in an interview today that the statement which appeared in one of the tabloid newspapers that the committee in the province intends to petition President Lungu has no blessings of other party members.

Mr. Kungo said what was reported was Ms Kapenda’s individual complaint which had no blessing of the dissolved provincial committee, adding that they had accepted the decision and saw no sense in petitioning the President.

He said the letter which was signed by PF Secretary General Davies Chama had not yet reached them but pointed out that the central committee had made a decision to which they have no objection but to oblige, and Ms. Kapenda should have issued the statement in her own capacity.

He said the changes are vital and no member of the dissolved provincial committee is aggrieved by the decision of the central committee, adding that other provinces such as Western, Copperbelt and Eastern had equally been dissolved.

Mr Kungo said the dissolved leadership would rally behind the new leadership that would be ushered in as well as embrace defectors to the party.

They pledged to continue supporting President Lungu, the PF secretary General and entire party.

In a telephone interview last evening with North West TV, PF Secretary General Davies Chama confirmed the dissolution of the provincial committee and affirmed that the party was re-organizing itself.

Copperbelt Minister apologises to UPND and HH

Copperbelt Minister Mwenya Musenge
Copperbelt Minister Mwenya Musenge

Copperbelt Minister Mwenya Musenge has apologised to the opposition UPND party on the act by some unknown Patriotic Front cadres who tried to disturb their conference at Kitwe’s Moba Hotel on Wednesday evening.

Mr. Musenge said Zambia is a Multi-party country therefore every political party as long as it is registered has a right to carry out their activities whenever they want to, as long as they have followed the necessary procedures.

He noted that that the UPND party followed all the necessary procedures to hold their conference in Kitwe of which he was also aware.

“As the Provincial Minister I strongly condemn the behaviour of the PF cadres who disturbed the activities of the opposition party, and I am not happy at all knowing that UPND followed all necessary procedures,” he said.

Mr. Musenge said President Edger Lungu is a peaceful and loving President who has always been advocating for peaceful political activities across the country.

He further stated that the Patriotic Front party has always been known to be a tolerant party and would want to continue along that path.

The Minister has however strongly warned all Patriotic Front cadres to quickly stop such violence adding that violence cannot strengthen a party.

Mr. Musenge further appealed to all political parties to refrain from such vices.

President Lungu’s pronouncements on Chuundu meeting unfortunate

45
President Lungu
President Lungu

The Grand Coalition on the Campaign for a People Driven Constitution is dismayed by the reports carried by some media houses on Thursday of His Excellence President Edgar Chagwa Lungu to the effect that he had allowed the planned Chuundu meeting to take place on Saturday in Monze.

We find it worrying that the President thinks he has power to allow or disallow Zambians from exercising their human rights, in this case freedom of association and assembly, which are guaranteed by our constitution. We want to remind His Excellence that the presidency does not confer human rights instead, him and his government has a duty and obligation to uphold the constitution by respecting those rights, and refraining from undue interference in citizens’ enjoyment of their human rights which are clearly provided for in the constitution.

The fact that he has the audacity to state publicly that he gave a go-ahead for the meeting leaves us without any doubt that he is the one who instructs the police to use the Public Order Act to silence dissenting voices. This also gives credence to claims by some sections of our society that the panga wielding thugs who occasionally harass citizens and disrupt such exercises of fundamental rights have the blessings of the highest office of the land.

We further remind the President that there is no law that allows him to confer human rights onto Zambians for him to now appear as if he is a benevolent leader generously ‘conferring human rights’ unto us.

In the same statement the President shows his hypocrisy by saying that he will meet the chiefs of Southern Province on Tuesday to “bring an end to the divisive sentiments some sections of society are fermenting to sow seeds of discord in the nation”.

As the Grand Coalition, we have no doubt that the sower of divisive sentiments is none other than Patriotic Front Secretary General Davies Chama, and not the convenors of the Chuundu that is due to take place on Saturday or any other persons in support of the Chuundu. Chama made his unpalatable tribalistic remarks on 20th June 2015 and that he was equally preceded by his deputy cadre Mumbi Phiri who referred to the people of Southern Province as “bakachema” and that the people of Southern Province have been patiently waiting for some recourse in vain until they have been forced to take this in their own hands.

[pullquote]We find it worrying that the President thinks he has power to allow or disallow Zambians from exercising their human rights[/pullquote]
We call on all well-meaning Zambians, of any tribe, who genuinely abhor tribalism to travel to Monze on Saturday and give solidarity to the Chuundu as a demonstration of taking a stand against such divisive tendencies being exhibited by the ruling party leadership. We believe that a new people driven constitution will ensure that the party in government respects fundamental civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of all of us citizens.

We also stress that the final draft constitution provides for a constitutional court to which, if it had been enacted in the 90 days, the injured ethnic group could have taken Davis Chama to seek redress on whether his remarks had not put a slur on the constitutional right of the people of Southern Province to the exercise of their culture.

We further encourage our Royal Highnesses, the chiefs from Southern Province to refuse to meet Lungu until he unreservedly apologises on behalf of his cadre and takes responsibility for his cadre’s remarks by firing Chama. There is no way the Head of State should begin to think that it is in his powers to ‘okay’ human rights. We reject this mediocrity, it has no place in our country.

Journalists urged to publicise works of the COMESA Court of Justice

1

The COMESA Court of Justice (CCJ) has called on Journalists to sensitise the public on the existence and works of the court to enable countries and citizens with disputes of regional nature, utilise it.

The jurisdiction of the Court, which was established in 1994 under COMESA treaty, is to oversee disputes between member states and members of staff as well as to provide an advisory opinion to the regional body.

COMESA Court of Justice immediate past Principal Judge, Samuel Rugege said the regional court played an important role in promoting regional integration and yet very few people were aware of its existence.

Prof Justice Rugege, who is also Rwanda Chief Justice, said there was need for the media in the region, to aggressively publicise the work of the court and educate people on the COMESA treaty so that more litigants and lawyers in the region utilise it.

He said this in Livingstone on today when he officially opened the COMESA Competition Commission regional sensitisation workshop for business reporters.

“The COMESA Court of Justice plays an important role in settling disputes and in promoting the regional integration agenda but few people are aware of its sittings,” he said.

Professor Rugege said it was the responsibility of journalists to inform people about the court and matters that were being settled before it.

He said only 42 cases from litigants had been handled by the court since its inception many years ago.

And speaking at the same meeting, COMESA Competition Commission Board Chairperson Matthews Chikankheni urged the media to help raise public awareness of both the role and actions of the Commission.

Mr Chikankheni said explaining the merits of a competitive environment in a common language could help the general public better understand competition policy objectives.

The Prisoner Reintegration and Empowerment Organisation (PREO) has commended President Edgar Lungu for commuting death sentences of over 300 prisoners to life imprisonment.

PREO director Derrick Malumo said the move by the Head of State clearly demonstrates government’s strong political will to improving the welfare of prisoners.

Mr. Malumo further praised President Lungu for his commitment to improving the general conditions of all prisons across the country.

He said this in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka yesterday.

And Mr. Malumo has extolled President Edgar Lungu for elevating the Commissioner of Prisons Percy Chato to the position of Commissioner General of Prisons.

He said the move will expand the staffing in the Prisons Service thereby creating more employment opportunities in the service.

Yesterday Lusaka based musician, Cliford Dimba, popularly known as ‘General’ Kanene who was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment and hard labour for defiling a 14-year-old girl walked to freedom after President Edgar Lungu pardoned him.

And 322 prisoners whose sentences were commuted from death row to life imprisonment openly wept after President Lungu reduced their sentences.

President Lungu has since appointed Kanene aged 27 as good ambassador Against Gender Based (GBV) and asked him to be of good behavior as he speaks for women and children whose rights are violated.

“As you walk out of these walls I am calling on you to be of good behavior and be a good ambassador for GBV in our country. Please don’t disappoint me, don’t let me down, ”President Lungu.

Mr Lungu who is the first President to visit Mukobeko Maximum prison since 1974 said he was of an idea that Kanene would assist in sensitizing the public against GBV.

Dimba was sentenced of 18 years with hard labour by Lusaka high court judge, Chalwe Mchenga for defiling the girl and stated that Dimba’s defilement of the girl was premeditated, an action which resulted in him having unlawful sex with a girl under the age of 16.

But Dimba has through one of his defence lawyers, Nicholas Chanda appealed against the conviction and sentence saying both Mr Justice Mchenga and Mr Kaoma erred in law and fact when they convicted and later sentenced his client.

And Kanene who knelt and shed tears praised President Lungu for pardoning him and for giving him an opportunity to be a voice for woman and children.

And Several gospel musicians mobbed Kanene while President of Zambian Musician Njoya Tembo praised President Lungu’s move to pardon Kanene and that clearly Kanene had exhibited he regretted what happened and has continued to preach to people through his music.

And in commuting the sentences of 322 condemned inmates President Lungu said this was in accordance to Article 56 of the constitution of Zambia and advised the pardoned inmates to take advantage of the life skills training programmes being offered at the facility.

President Lungu who also the condemned section further said the skills which inmates will acquire will help them to be rehabilitated and reintegrated into society.

And after the announcement most prisoners who were on death row openly wept while others knelt and prayed.

And one of the prisoner who spoke on behalf others James Musonda paid tribute to President Lungu for showing love and care towards prisoners and appealed to him to continue.

He cited the recent commutation of sentences of prisoners whose case records went missing

Meanwhile, President Lungu has said government was committed in improving the dignity of prisoners by making prisons more habitable and pledged that his government will strive to improve services in all the correctional and rehabilitation institutions.

The President said government was working tirelessly to resolve the challenges of overcrowding so as to improve the welfare of the inmates and pointed out that overcrowding makes it difficult for the prison services to observe the United Nations (UN) minimum standard rules and other international protocols.

He revealed that government was determined to amend the Zambia Prisons Services Act, CAP 97 to include provisions that will facilitate the construction of prisons on a public private partnership.

The President that the amending of the Zambia Prisons Services would help in addressing congestion and improving infrastructure for inmates.

“We will ensure that we build on our efforts of resolving the challenge of overcrowding and improving the state of our prisons, “he said.

Among those in attendance during President visit includes Special Assistant for Press and Public Relations Amos Chanda, Home Affairs Deputy Minister Panji Kaunda, Sydney Mushanga, Education, Central Province deputy Minister Davis Chisopa, Permanent Secretary Edwidge Mutale, District Commissioner’s and senior government officials.

Luwingu petitioner urges Govt to improve enrolment of law students at ZIALE

Day for Petitioners in Lusaka

A Luwingu resident has submitted to the Legal and Justice Sector Reforms Commission that government should find ways of expanding the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education (ZIALE) to improve the enrolment of law students.

Evaristo Kabuswe, a teacher by profession, also submitted that the Office of the Investigator General should be decentralized to provincial centers and districts to enable easy access to justice by aggrieved government workers.

Mr Kabuswe told the Commission chaired by Justice Frederick Chomba during a public sitting held at the Luwingu District Council Chamber today that the failure rate at ZIALE was too high and that something needs to be done to improve the enrolment of students so that the current shortage of practicing lawyers is addressed.

Mr Kabuswe further submitted that government should also consider establishing another institution where law students could access advanced legal education to increase the numbers of practicing lawyers so that Zambians can have improved access to justice.

And Mr Kabuswe said the absence of the Office of the Investigator General in provinces and districts denies aggrieved government workers free and fair access to justice as they have to travel long distances to Lusaka to submit their complaints.

Another petitioner, 51-year-old Vincent Mwape submitted that government should bring access to justice closer to the people in remote areas by establishing Supreme and High Courts at provincial and District level.

Mr Mwape said the current location of the higher courts of appeal in selected provinces only denies people in rural areas legal redress when they come into conflict with the law because it was costly to travel long distances to seek further court action.

Meanwhile, the Commission also received submissions on unfair judgments relating to divorce cases involving three different women who complained that they felt they had not received fair access to justice.

One of the petitioners, 30-year-old Clara Mumba of Chikoyi Village in Luwingu District complained that she was married in 2002 and that she divorced her husband in court where judgment was passed in which their two matrimonial houses were forfeited and that she had not received any assistance in the local court despite appealing the outcome.

Three other women petitioned the Commission to help address the indiscriminate grabbing of land by the District Council which they felt was denying them access equitable distribution of land in the area.

Astridah Chisulo, 36, of Nachaiteka village submitted on behalf of the Salesian Sisters Women Association complained that the Council had demarcated a piece of land allocated to the group for development by the Chief after paying K8,400.00 for a special user plot.

Ms Chisulo submitted that the Council demarcated the plot to another developer who is now constructing a filing station at the expense of the women group who were legally given the land by the local Chief.

But Luwingu District Council Planner Mwila Chansa who was summoned by the Commission to explain the wrangle surrounding the land in question, said the land had 16 plots whose plans were approved by the provincial planning office and that the local authority was willing to discuss the matter with a view to settling the problem.

The Commission will tomorrow hold its final public sittings in the Northern province in Mungwi district before proceeding to Muchinga for similar meetings starting on Monday July 20 to Friday July 24 in Chinsali, Isoka, Nakonde and Mpika.

Is Tribalism Threatening One Zambia One Nation?

49

By Mwizenge S. Tembo, Ph. D. Professor of Sociology

“And Chama said the UPND in Southern Province were polygamous by nature and “may be by having so many children, one day after 100 years, they may lead the country, but not under Hichilema.

If at all they will ever be in power, may be a hundred years from now, they are polygamous by nature so may be as they have more children they can be in power. But under the leadership of Hichilema. I don’t think it will happen,” he said. (The Post, June 9, 2015, p.8)

These are the incendiary offending remarks that have apparently stirred passions of tribalism so much among some Zambians today that there are even reports of a small group of the Tonga in Southern Province defiantly talking about secession. The purpose of this article is to provide some advice and perspective in the form of the Zambian tradition of mphala, insaka, or indaba on the bigger picture about our beloved Zambian nation. First, I will briefly discuss the offending remarks by the PF Secretary General Davies Chama. Second, I will discuss why Zambian politics may be reaching a dangerous stage. Third, I will discuss the bad news or even potentially tragic news for those all over Zambia who have contemplated secession in the past, the present and in the future. Fourth, I will discuss the great news about our beloved country of Zambia and how anyone can be elected the President of Zambia from whatever tribe they belong. Last, I will mention a few Kaundaisms that all political leaders including the current and future Presidents of Zambia will find very useful in leading the great nation of Zambia.

Mr. Davies Chama’s Tribal Remarks.

Mr. Chama’s remarks were offensive not just to Tongas but may be to Zambians all over the country and the world. The best thing would have been for Mr. Chama to issue an apology but he has vehemently refused. What I found surprising was that the offending remarks were buried deep into his long statement about the PF swallowing MMD and the UPND. This suggests to me that he may not have fully meant the remarks to be harmful. His remarks were actually a form of taunting after someone has won a contest. He may have been carried away in the moment of exuberance and PF party chauvinism after electoral triumphs. This does not excuse Mr. Chama’s remarks. Taunting is unprofessional and is poor sportsmanship. In recent Zambian elections, whenever a particular party has won, the cadres of the winning party afterwards taunt the ones from the losing party sometimes resulting in violence. Taunting after winning elections has to stop. May be one of the reasons we are having so many problems with cadres, some political violence, and talk of secession is that we have too many young people in Zambia and too few elders like veteran politician like Mr. Vernon Mwaanga.

Zambian Population

The population of Zambia is 13 million. The proportion of the country that is under 14 years old is 46.7%, those between 15 and 24 years old are 20%, those between 25 to 54 years old are 28.4% and but those between 55 and 64 years old are only 2.9% and those above 65 years old are even smaller at 2.4%. The age statistics that are the most important in explaining both Mr. Chama’s remarks and how Zambian politics may be in danger of becoming dangerous is that Zambians that are younger than 30 years old may be about 70% of the population which is about 9 million young girls, boys, women and men. And yet those who are over 55 years old are only 2.9% which is only 377,000. Therefore, there are fewer elders to day in Zambia to teach younger people about our political history, customs, and our culture perhaps due to the high death rate of older Zambians who are over 55 years old because of the HIV/AIDS epidemic since the 1980s. Urbanization also takes its toll as the 36% of the urban population is rising. This means increasing numbers of Zambians lose their connection to elders, rural areas where the source, strength and origin of our Zambian traditions are the strongest.

The Bad News about Political Future

When there is political frustration in a young population, certain people in Zambia who might feel they are not getting a fair share of the resources might contemplate revolution and violence as the sure and quickest way to getting what they want. This will not work in Zambia and may not be working very well in many countries where people have tried revolutionary violence. Peaceful secession is very rare. The vast majority of Zambians today have access to the internet through cell phones. There is Facebook, email, twitter, web pages, blogs, and Instagram. We read and see exciting images of the Arab Spring revolution in Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Syria and many other places.

It is tempting for many younger Zambian leaders to assume we will just import whatever is abroad to solve our problems. While some of the information is good, some or much of it may be unrealistic and just plain dangerous and destructive for the nation. This author is advocating peaceful solutions for the Zambian nation not because he is a coward, scared and deathly afraid of revolutions but because I know we have a very peaceful country. We do not need revolutionary violence. I just love and cherish the peace that we enjoy and I am sure many Zambians would like to maintain it too. Many younger Zambians may have no idea how badly people are suffering with violence and chaos in the Eastern Congo, Libya, Somalia, Syria, Boko Haram in Nigeria, Iraq, Central African Republic, and many other places. I will discuss more of this later about Kaundaisms.

The Great News about Our Country

The greatest news about our country is that we are probably the most integrated in the world. Our founders were intelligent enough to create the foundation. This is our greatest strength that very few countries in Africa and the world have. Even some of the most powerful countries such as the United States, the oldest European and other countries are not as integrated as Zambians. We Zambians do not have the deeply entrenched deadly hatred and segregation of one tribe against another of the 72 tribes. Our founders made sure that we loved each other. This does not mean we have no problems or internal political differences. I had to laugh when there was news about Tonga secession. I was thinking if Southern Province seceded, I would need a passport to go to Mwanamayinda on the Kafue Road on the Mazabuka road. I am a Tumbuka from the Eastern Province. I have a sister who is married to a Tonga man who is my mulamu (brother-in-law) and I have more than 8 nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews in Southern Province. Would they suddenly be in another country? All of us Zambians have close friends, blood and marriage relatives in regions and provinces all over Zambia in the 72 tribes.

Any Zambian Can be Elected President

Because we are so integrated, that’s why anyone in Zambia from any tribe can be elected President. The talk that a Tonga, Lozi, Kaonde, Namwanga, Chokwe and any member of the 72 tribes cannot be elected President is just not true. Who would have thought President Obama, a black American, would become the President of the United States which has deeply entrenched racism against African-Americans? This is the advice that every political party and individuals who aspire to be elected President of Zambia should know. If you are a Presidential candidate who is Bemba, Lozi, Ngoni, Chokwe, Nkoya. Lozi, Tonga, Soli, Lenje, Lamba, and many others, don’t waste your time campaigning in your province or region. You already have that vote in your pocket. You need to have a good manifesto, organization on the ground, and then travel to all the other provinces to personally appeal for their votes. If you are genuine, Zambians can see you are serious, fair, determined, you have a vision for all Zambians and you are genuinely non-tribal, Zambians will vote for you irrespective of your race, ethnicity, tribe, man or woman. This is why any Zambian man or woman can be elected President of Zambia.

Kaundaisms and One Zambia One Nation.

The younger generation of political leaders today in Zambia might take the peace, tranquility, the One Zambia One Nation we enjoy for granted. That is the most dangerous attitude. There are two of the many Kaundaisms that might help all of us Zambians which we should always remember. First, if you advocate revolutionary violence, when the country of Zambia is up in flames, you won’t enjoy whatever you thought you will achieve. President Kaunda addressing a rally in the 1970s even said that once the whole country is engulfed in violence, thieves, saboteurs, those who are holding dark corner meetings, political opportunists, tribalists, racists, and even those engaging in corruption will not be able to enjoy their spoils. Second, if you as a President unjustly politically verbally or physically attack or imprison a particular opposition group leader(s) or political party leaders, the supporters of that party or group will hold a grudge against you and you will be creating more martyrs and enemies as a political leader or President. His advice was that it was best as a political leader to be fair minded, make just decisions, follow the law, be reconciliatory, be kind, and respect others including the opposition because you yourself as a leader might be out of power one day.

Press Statement For Immediate Release.

As the Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) we wish to strongly condemn the arrest of Mr. Fred M’membe, the Post Editor-in-Chief and reporter Mukosha Funga over the letter that the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) Director Rosewin Wandi wrote to President Edgar Lungu, notifying him that they were investigating his Political Advisor, Kaizer Zulu for Corruption.

The action by the Police is a desperate and discreditable attempt by President Edgar Lungu and his Government to muzzle the Post Newspapers and silence anyone who dares expose the rot that is going on in this Government.

Why should a letter about an ordinary employee of Government be classified as a State Secret? Why should Kaizer Zulu, a mere employee of Government who is being paid by taxpayers’ money be treated as a demi-god who is not amenable to anyone? Why is Edgar Lungu shielding Kaizer Zulu, a simple state employee from public scrutiny?

On May 22, 2015, the Daily Nation Newspapers exclusively carried a story quoting Ms. Wandi’s second letter to President Edgar Lungu, under the headline: ACC Clears Kaizer Zulu; Why haven’t the Police arrested and charged Mr. Richard Sakala and the Daily Nation reporter for allegedly breaching section 35 of the State Security Act? Does it mean that Section 35 only applies to the Post Newspapers? Why are the Police exhibiting such deplorable double standards? This a clear case of witch hunting!

Intimidations, arrests, even killings will never cow the people from holding public officials accountable. This is a democracy and transparency and accountability are key tenets of any democratic society.

Instead of waisting time and government resources chasing after the Post Newspapers, Honourable Edgar Lungu should for once take his job of serving the people of Zambia seriously. He should focus on fixing the economy;ending load shedding; arresting the free fall of the Kwacha; reducing fuel prices, lowering the cost of living, opening of the Copperbelt University and fixing our healthcare system.

Veteran defender Joseph Musonda is yet to decide his next move after leaving South African club Polokwane City.

The 38 year old full back is currently in Kitwe training with his old club Nkana.

Musonda said he can’t tell whether or not he will re-join Nkana.

“I am still deciding but right now I am training with my team Nkana,” he said.

“I have not yet decided because my family is still in South Africa and I just came to Kitwe to sort out some family issues,” Musonda said.

He left Nkana in 2004 to join Zesco United before moving to Golden Arrows in South Africa.

Musonda ruled out retiring from active football any time soon.

“I will continue playing. I have got so many years left to play,” he added.
