Transport key to economic growth, says Tayali as he opens the Land Linked Zambia Conference

0

Minister of Transport and Logistics, Frank Tayali says the transport sector is a key catalyst in fostering social economic growth and transformation in the country.

Mr Tayali says Zambia is repositioning itself in becoming a Land linked country by providing a sustainable transport system that will unlock Zambia’s potential.

The Minister was speaking during the official opening of the Land Linked Zambia Conference and Exhibition in Lusaka that has attracted about 14 countries and 400 delegates from the region.

Mr Tayali stated that the theme for the meeting seeks to address the impact of the African Continental Free Trade Area in the Transport and Logistics Industry as well as the elimination of tariffs on goods, and addressing non-tariff obstacles to intra-regional and inter-African trade.

“Increased trade definitely results in increased demand for transport services and infrastructure at all levels. Therefore, this requires us in the Tripartite area of COMESA, SADC and the East African Community to harness this opportunity”

And Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Assistant Secretary General, Dave Haman has disclosed that Zambia will this June host the COMESA heads of state and government summit to discuss among others the issues affecting the African Continent.

Dr Haman has urged the private sector players to take advantage of the summit and link themselves to other private sector players from COMESA.

Meanwhile Grindrod Chief Executive Officer Xolani Mbambo says Africa has the potential to grow its investment and there is no better time than now.

This year’s theme is leveraging on the impacts of the African Continental Free Trade Area for the African Transport and Logistics Industry.

IMF in Zambia to begin the first review of Zambia under an Extended Credit Facility arrangement

8

An International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission has arrived in Lusaka, Zambia to begin the first review of Zambia’s IMF Program under an Extended Credit Facility (ECF) arrangement. The IMF program was approved by the Executive Board in August 2022 and is aimed at supporting the government’s reform plan to restore debt sustainability, create fiscal space for much-needed social spending, and achieve sustainable and inclusive economic growth.

The IMF delegation, led by Allison Holland, Mission Chief for Zambia, will be in the country from March 22 to April 5 to undertake the first review and Article IV consultation. This review is part of the scheduled regular reviews that the IMF will undertake to assess Zambia’s progress in implementing the ECF program.

During the review, the IMF will collect economic and financial information and discuss the country’s economic developments and policies. The Fund will assess performance in areas such as restoration of fiscal and debt sustainability, improving debt management and transparency, strengthening governance and financial sector stability, and strengthening financial management.

Secretary to the Treasury, Felix Nkulukusa, issued a statement saying that the Ministry of Finance and National Planning is pleased to welcome the IMF Mission Team back to Lusaka and to have the opportunity to discuss Zambia’s positive reform progress and next steps in the program implementation. He added that the government remains committed to delivering positive economic impacts for the country and improving the livelihoods of the Zambian people with the support of the IMF.

The IMF program is expected to help Zambia address its debt crisis and achieve sustainable economic growth. Zambia’s debt had risen to unsustainable levels, and the country had defaulted on some of its debt payments before the IMF program was approved. The IMF program aims to restore debt sustainability by improving debt management and transparency, reducing the fiscal deficit, and increasing revenue.

The program also includes measures to strengthen governance and financial sector stability, which are crucial for achieving sustainable and inclusive economic growth. The IMF program is expected to create fiscal space for much-needed social spending, which will help improve the livelihoods of the Zambian people.

Zambia’s economy has been facing several challenges in recent years, including low economic growth, high inflation, and a shortage of foreign exchange. The IMF program is expected to help address these challenges by providing policy advice and financial assistance to support the government’s reform program.

The first review and Article IV consultation by the IMF delegation is a critical step in the implementation of the IMF program. The review will help assess Zambia’s progress in implementing the program and identify areas that require further attention. The IMF program is expected to provide significant benefits to Zambia, and the government is committed to implementing the program successfully.

The arrival of the IMF mission in Zambia is an important development for the country’s economy. The IMF program is expected to help address Zambia’s debt crisis, create fiscal space for much-needed social spending, and achieve sustainable and inclusive economic growth. The first review and Article IV consultation by the IMF delegation will help assess Zambia’s progress in implementing the program and identify areas that require further attention. The government remains committed to delivering positive economic impacts for the country and improving the livelihoods of the Zambian people with the support of the IMF.

Do not dictate Africa’s foreign policy – PF tells USA

……The former ruling party raises concerns over Democracy Summit

The former ruling Patriotic Front, PF, has strongly condemned the United States for dictating foreign policy to Africa. Vice President for the party, Given Lubinda, said the US government must respect the sovereignty of African countries and their right to choose which countries to befriend.

The former cabinet minister and former lawmaker was speaking ahead of the visit to Zambia by US Vice President Kamala Harris and the 29-30th US-sponsored Democracy Summit which the country co-hosts with Zambia along with Costa Rica, the Netherlands, and the Republic of Korea.

The remarks were prompted by the US Strategy Towards Sub-Sahara Africa issued in August last year which, among other things is intended to “counter harmful activities by the People’s Republic of China, Russia, and other foreign actors”. In addition, on 27th April 2022, the US Congress passed H.R. 7311 – entitled “Countering Malign Russian Activities in Africa Act”.

The Patriotic Front is concerned that through these actions the United States is directing Africa’s foreign policy by labeling as hostile acts any dealings with Russia while warning that China does not mean well for Africa.

“We choose who our friends are. America cannot and must never choose friends for us nor dictate foreign policy”, Mr. Lubinda said. In addition, Mr. Lubinda quoted South Africa’s Nelson Mandela who famously said, “If there is a country in the world that has committed unspeakable atrocities, it is the United States of America. They do not care for human beings”.

Both the African Union and the Southern African Development Community have condemned the US “Countering Malign Russian Activities Act” and the strategy that describes China’s actions in Africa as hostile. The PF has consequently warned that should President Hakainde Hichilema align Zambia’s foreign policy with that of the US thereby departing from the non-aligned tradition, the party will be left with no choice but to ask the AU and SADC leaderships to declare the Zambian leader a hostile force.

Political observers in Lusaka have dismissed as cheap and desperate propaganda by the US to label China’s relations with Africa as harmful saying the relationship is marked by unprecedented investments in infrastructure worth billions of dollars. Instead, some historians are pointing to the more than 400 military interventions the US has made across the world in its 200yr-history for purposes that range from overthrowing governments, protecting puppet governments, imposing policy, territorial expansion, seeking economic interests, in search of natural resources, and extending and cementing national influence.

Furthermore, some political observers argue that the Democracy Summit, which some political leaders would rather it was cancelled, is a cover-up for America’s efforts to counter China’s rising and growing influence in Africa while strengthening its own influence.

They say that the countries, civil society, and business houses attending the Democracy Summit are unwittingly aiding the US agenda which some historians characterize as seeking to create the world in its own image, a phrase borrowed from the Christian Bible.

Kabimba, Kateka advise HH to address high cost of living

TWO opposition political leaders have observed that the UPND administration’s economic model being implemented is negatively affecting the under-privileged and have advised President Hakainde Hichilema to address the high cost of living because there is a risk that Zambians could resort to what is currently happening in South Africa and Kenya.

The Economic Front party and the New Heritage Party (NHP) have advised President Hichilema to stop thinking that those with divergent views on how best Zambia should be governed were his enemies.

Mr Wynter Kabimba, the leader of the Economic Front says one of the characteristics of a revolution in the world was spontaneity and that it would be prudent for the UPND administration to listen to the cries of citizens over the high cost of living after being promised that things would be better, cheaper and easier under President Hichilema.

Mr Kabimba said those who were raising concerns about the high cost of living, the Ndola-Lusaka dual carriageway, the breakdown in the rule of law and the political violence being perpetrated by the UPND cadres were not enemies of the State but were merely helping President Hichilema to govern the country the best way he could.

He said while the events in Kenya and South Africa could be isolated and not related, it would be folly for President Hichilema to think that what was happening in the two countries could not happen in Zambia.

And Ms Chishala Kateka, the president of the New Heritage Party says Zambians have been complaining about high cost of living from the days of MMD and the PF and that complained have continued into the UPND without getting any relief from the successive governments.

Ms Kateka said the frustrations among Zambians about the high cost of living were cumulative and that there could be a time when citizens would no longer hold on to their patience of things ever improving to their favour.

Lack of medicines in health facilities, the ever rising cost of living, decisions that seem not to be of benefit to Zambian, such as the 20,000 hectares for Kenyans, high cost of fuel, the foreign exchange rate that now seems to be in free fall and the very little money in circulation all are vexatious issue to Zambians. Not attending to these could see Zambians deciding to follow in the wake of those from other countries that took to the streets,” Ms Kateka said.

Patriotic Front raises concerns over Zambia’s co-hosting of democracy summit and US VP visit

10

Patriotic Front (PF) Acting President, Given Lubinda, raised concerns about Zambia’s role in two major events that will take place in the next ten days, during a media statement presented on March 22, 2023. The two events include co-hosting the Summit for Democracy and hosting a high-level visit by US Vice President Kamala Harris.

Before stating his party’s position, Lubinda laid out the foundation, highlighting several objectives of the US strategy towards sub-Saharan Africa issued in August 2022. Lubinda mentioned two important objectives of the US strategy, which are fostering openness and open societies and delivering democratic and security dividends. He also mentioned an executive order and a presidential memorandum issued by US President Joe Biden on advancing equality for LGBTQI+ individuals.

Lubinda expressed deep concerns about the two events, citing US support for civil society, including activists and reform-minded leaders. He said that the Patriotic Front is worried that the US is pushing an agenda of homosexuality and other issues that are against Zambian culture and values.

He also expressed his concerns about the Summit for Democracy, saying that the US is using it as a tool to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries. He added that the Patriotic Front believes that Zambia should not be used as a platform for countries that want to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries.

Lubinda emphasized that the Patriotic Front is a pro-democracy party that believes in the sovereignty and independence of the country. He urged Zambians to be vigilant and protect the country’s values and principles.

The media statement was attended by members of the central committee, Honorable Members of Parliament, opposition leaders, and invited distinguished guests.

PF Demands Dissolution of Presidential Delivery Unit Over Allegations of Institutionalized Corruption

Last Saturday, President Hakainde Hichilema announced the creation of what he calls the Presidential Delivery Unit, herein referred to as PDU, with the mandate of ‘accelerating the implementation of high priority government programs and projects’.

In response to this announcement, the Media Director of the Patriotic Front, Antonio Mourinho Mwanza, has raised concerns about the newly formed PDU, stating that it is “akin to institutionalised corruption and raises more questions than answers.”

Mwanza also noted that the President did not cite any authority he used to appoint the PDU, which goes against the general rule and common practice. He further asked, “who will be financing the PDU? Which budget line will they be using since they are not part and parcel of the established government structure?”

The Media Director also raised concerns about the duplication of roles, as President Hichilema had previously appointed Dr Lawrence MWANAYANDA as his Special Assistant for Project Implementation and Monitoring, whose mandate is akin to, if not exactly the same as, that of the newly formed PDU. He questioned whether this was “the same bloating of government and wastage of taxpayers’ money that President SAMMY vehemently opposed when he was in opposition?”

Mwanza also drew attention to the constitutional implications of the PDU, stating that “the Constitution of Zambia in Article 114 gives Cabinet the sole authority to cause or ensure the implementation of all government programs and policies.” He questioned whether the PDU had taken over the powers of Cabinet and what role Cabinet and line ministries would play now that the role to implement government programs and policies had been given to Chipokota and Kamwambi.

Furthermore, the Media Director asked, “what criteria will Chipo and her friend Kamwambi be using to identify which programs, policies and projects are a priority and what will qualify a project to be priority?” He also questioned the reporting structure of the PDU, given that Ms. Kamwambi is a Permanent Secretary and reports to the Secretary to Cabinet, but has been assigned to State House and the President.

In addition, Mwanza raised concerns about accountability, given the far-reaching powers and political influence that Chipo and Kamwambi have been given, stating that it would be difficult for watchdog institutions and ordinary Zambians to hold them to account when they will be working under the powerful cover of State House and the President himself.

Mwanza called for the dissolution of the PDU, stating that it would create “some obscure untouchable ‘cartels’ that will be above the reproach of any authority other than State House and the President.” Instead, he urged the government to give “full mandate and authority to oversee the implementation of government programs, policies, and projects” to the duly established departments and units of government.

Implications of our president getting soaked by heavy rains

18

By Prince Bill M. Kaping’a Political/Social Analyst

Last week, President Hichilema made a foray into the scenic mountainous town of Mbala to officiate at the graduation ceremony of the Special Forces (Commandos), aboard a chopper. He had just concluded a tour of the Copperbelt province where he had a series of engagements commissioning or inspecting projects, meeting the clergy and captains of the industry and, of course interacting with ordinary members of the public, among other things.
To borrow the cliched idiom, it was raining cats and dogs! The president had two options available on his plate……call off the event and reschedule it to another day, or make use of the umbrella which was graciously hoisted for him outside the chopper by one of his faithful officials. He waved the umbrella aside and stepped into the heavy downpour and waddled into the mud as the Commandos proudly brought up the rear, very much like troops escorting their heroic commander from a victorious war!

What do we make of this?

The president has sent a strong message to the public, particularly the ministers, technocrats, MPs and councilors alike that being in government is all about service to the people as opposed to self-benefit. He has clearly demonstrated that leadership is all about stepping out of the comfort zone to jump into the ‘thick of things,’ circumstances notwithstanding, and get things done, promptly!

Ministers……are you regularly rolling-up your sleeves and getting soiled as the president demonstrated and helping address a myriad of challenges our people may be grappling with day in and out or you are merely lounging around, if not frequenting boutique hotels to wine and dine? We can’t help noticing that some of you are already accumulating extra layers of fat within a record time!

What about you, the technocrats; are you religiously clearing the backlog of work requiring your express attention on your desks, or indeed swiftly attending to people calling on your offices every day? Would we be wrong to suggest your minds are probably preoccupied with cutting deals and figuring out ways of how best to defraud government as your peers have wilfully done in the past?

The New Dawn Administration has done a sterling job increasing the Constituency Development Fund (CDF)! Are our MPs working around the clock to enhance service delivery in their jurisdictions? Are they embarking on any community projects – fixing feeder roads, constructing classroom blocks and police posts or putting up health facilities?

We would like to believe councilors are domiciled in the wards that they duly represent and are therefore, in constant touch with our people. What are they doing to ensure that residents are regularly being enlightened about waste disposal and that garbage is collected, timeously? Are they mobilizing members of the community to clear the blocked drainages or ensuring that vulnerable people in society are accessing grants or bursaries?

Unless our leaders take a cue from the president and get into action immediately, we shall simply conclude that they don’t deserve to occupy some of those offices. And when the time of reckoning draws nigh, we shall be quick to discard them pronto!

Zambia U23 Lose To Egypt U23 in Cairo

1

Egypt on Wednesday night handed Zambia a mountain to climb following a 2-0 home win at the 20 June Stadium in Cairo in a 2023 U23 AFCON final round first leg match.

Both goals came in the last 18 minutes of the game in which Egypt had a huge technical edge over Osward Mutapa’s side.

Zambia had to thank Trident FC goalkeeper Francis Mwansa for some great work in both halves before he was finally breached on the last stretch.

Osama Faisal fired a 31st minute effort inches wide in Egypt’s first real threat in a second half they had camped in Zambia’s zone.

Mwansa then denied Mohamed Shehata in the 41st minute as Egypt ended the first half stronger.

Mwansa was again at his best in the 54th minute when he saved Adel Ibrahim’s one-on-one shot.

But the pressure mounted as the deadlock was broken in the 7nd minute when Ahmed Koka’s cross found Adel Ibrahim who fired in a volley from the edge of the area.

Miguel Chaiwa had probably Zambia’s best chance in the 76th minute but his shot from inside the box went inches wide.

It was game set and match in the 87th minute when two Egyptian second half substitutes combined to seal the vital home win.

Imad Mihoub left cross was met by Abdel Rahman Atef who rose higher above the Zambian defensive line to head-in the ball.

The two sides meet this Sunday at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola to decide who gets the ticket to the Morocco finals where Africa’s three Olympic tickets will be decided.

Latecomers Upset Grant As Lesotho Looms on Thursday

0

Chipolopolo coach Avram Grant says he is not happy with the late arrival of some key players for Thursday evening’s 2023 Africa Cup qualifier against Lesotho, set for Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

Grant had 25 of the 26 players he called for the Group H match against Lesotho just 48 hours before the tie.

The Israeli said he would have loved to have all the players in camp at least three days before the match.

“According to the situation, the preparations went on well. When the players arrived some of them arrived yesterday, some of them two days ago but I am happy they came with a good spirit,” Grant said.

“They are looking forward to the game. They want of course to win. Of course I am not happy that the player did not arrive three days ago but it is not because of us but FIFA regulation.”

“The most important thing is that players are showing a lot of passion and a lot of spirit,” Grant said.

Midfielder Benson Sakala said Zambia must utilise home advantage against Lesotho at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.

“I think we have prepared very well,” Sakala said.

“Coming to the game against Lesotho, not an easy game – playing at home I think we have to use our home advantage of which we will and get maximum points which we need and which the nation needs,” he said.

The match will kick off at 18h00.

Ivory Coast lead Group H with four points followed by Zambia and Comoros, who are tied on three points each.

Lesotho are bottom of the group with one point in two matches played.

UPND Government need to explain the benefits of the President’s 30 International trips Since taking over Government

Mufulira’s Patriotic Front (PF) Kantanshi Member of Parliament Dr. Anthony Chanda Mumba has challenged the New Dawn Government to explain the benefits of the numerous trips President Hakainde Hichilema has been undertaking.

Dr. Mumba said President Hichilema has undertaken over 30 international trips since taking over as 7th Republican President in August 2021.

He said the presidential trips are unique and it is incumbent upon the Government to always explain to the people of Zambia the anticipated opportunities that may arise from these trips.

“The President has undertaken over 30 international trips since taking over as 7th Republican President. All these trips are unique and it is incumbent upon the Government to always explain to the people of Zambia the anticipated opportunities that may arise from these trips ranging from Job creation, infrastructure development, Trade, Finance as well as attracting Foreign Direct Investments. But guess what, this Government fails to communicate to the people of Zambia and in the process our people are lost in trying to understand Presidential trips, government programmes and so on,” Dr. Mumba said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mumba said it is shocking that the government is silent about the upcoming Democracy Summit which will attract a number of countries including the Vice President of the United States of America Kamala D. Harris.

The Kantanshi lawmaker said he is hoping the government will improve communication especially in Parliament.

“Can you imagine next week on the 29th- 30th March we are Co- Hosting the Democracy Summit which will attract a number of countries including the Vice President of United States of America Kamala D. Harris coming from the biggest economy in the world but the New Dawn is “Silent” with no mention of any opportunities that may arise for the Zambian people. This could be business opportunities like hire of vehicles, supply of stationary, accommodation just to mention a few. What about the sideline meetings for Trade and Finance, Climate Change etc.Any way I hope they pull up their socks and communicate more especially in the People’s House the National Assembly. God Bless you,” Dr. Mumba said.

Zambia will on 29th and 30th March, 2023 co-host the second Summit for Democracy where 16 African countries are expected to participate.

Zambia will co-host the Summit with the United States of America, Costa Rica, the Netherlands and the Republic of Korea.

Speaking to journalists in Lusaka, Justice Minister Mulambo Haimbe said the 16 African countries that are expected to participate in the Summit include among others Angola, Botswana, Cape Verde and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Others are Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia and Niger.

Mr. Haimbe said the Summit will be held under the theme ‘Free, Fair and Transparent elections in Africa’.

He explained that the objective of the second summit for Democracy is to underscore the global desire for Transparent, Accountable and Rights-Respecting Governance.

Mr. Haimbe noted that Zambia’s selection as host for the African region of the Summit comes against the background of the country’s strong commitment to the principles of Democratic Governance, respect for the rule of law and human rights.

Intuition can reduce corruption

2

By Felix Kunda

The country, Zambia at the moment has very few opinion leaders who can be inspirational to the young generation. All the famous and important personalities who held important offices are either facing corruption charges, convicted or are under investigation by the Anti- Corruption Commission.

Going by the media reports, and the court cases that is going on, there is rampart corruption in Zambia at every level in government, private sector and perhaps even in Non Governmental Organisations. The country is in an intensive care, sick with corruption, and there is need for a vaccine to end this pandemic.

To confirm the prevailing problem, the Drug Enforcement Commission announced that it seized 41 bank accounts from various commercial banks worth 174 million Kwacha and 19 million United States Dollars. These are huge sums of money, that was meant to uplift the living standard of the 80 percent poor people in Zambia.

As if this is not nauseating enough, Anti -Corruption Commission Head of Corporate Communications Timothy Moono informed the nation that by the end of November 2022, the commission had a total of 1,264 cases under investigation and out of these 284 cases were concluded.

And 1973 to 1978 Bahati Constituency Member of parliament under the United Independence Party (UNIP) former Member of Parliament Honourable Valentine Kayope said top civil servants and political leaders who are involved in corruption luck vision of why they are occupying such important positions in government.

Honourable Kayope who also served the same constituency from 1996 to 2001 under the Movement for multi-party democracy (MMD) said leadership is a gift from God, and immediately leaders convince themselves that they are in those position as their own efforts derails them on their responsibilities of serving the people.

Mr. Kayope who also served as Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister under Dr. Frederick Chiluba’s government said those in top positions are there to serve the poor people and not to serve themselves. He said the people that those leaders are serving constantly observe their leaders and immediately they notice selfishness among the leaders, they are the ones that blow the whistles.

He said, leadership is about transparent and accountability, immediately that is lost, people will start speculating and these are the people that will report to institution because it is their resources being abused. “Amenso yamukundilwa yengi,” he said. The resources are for the Zambians and not the leadership or top civil servants.

Needless to say that the consequences of those involved in these corrupt practices are depressing and stressing, and human beings can avoid corruption by using intuition. Intuition are extra-ordinary powers of the mind that is readily available and helps in making difficult decisions.

According to Laura Day in her book Practical Intuition, “intuition is a capacity you are born with as a human being, like the capacity for language or thinking or appreciating music. Intuition is not a power one acquires. It is an integral part of every human mental, emotional, and psychical process.

You use your intuition in practical reasoned decisions you make every day, from choices such as which bus to use, as to what to eat for supper, when to visit the village, or who to marry. Most people use intuition unconsciously every day, while some have learned to use it with precision and accuracy.

It is therefore true and accurate that all the Zambian individual who are currently appearing in court for corruption, were warned by their intuition not to participate in corrupt practices. Intuition is always there with us as human beings, which others call a small voice within ourselves. However humans tend to ignore the early warnings through intuition, simply because of selfishness.

For all those in leadership and the top civil servants, Intuition is not limited by space and time, and one can always rely on an intuition in making a difficulty decision. Intuition can protect you from a bribe or participating in corrupt practices.

Zambia National Farmers Union happy with early distribution of farming inputs

9

Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) has commended the government for the early distribution of farming inputs to farmers in the country.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS today ZNFU Public Relations Manager, Kelvin Kayeli said the early distribution of farming inputs is a positive development to farmers and the country at large as it will help in mitigating climate change effects.

“We want to commend the government regarding the corrective measures it has taken over the early distribution of farming inputs looking at the background we are coming from where farmers were receiving inputs as late as February which defeats the purpose of the distributions,” he said.

Mr Kayeli stated that the distribution will help farmers plan in time and therefore mitigate climate change effects on the agriculture sector in the country.

“What we want to see is farmers in Chief Nabwalya’s area, farmers in Chama and all those rural areas receive their farming inputs in time. When farmers receive their farming inputs on time it is easier for them to plan and grow their crops,” he said.

He added that farmers should take advantage of the distribution by planning and working on their farms.

Mr Kayeli advised farmers not to stray away from their farming activities such as smart agriculture, agro forestry and other climate mitigative measures.

“We would like to see positive improvements amongst farmers, we want to see farmers respond positively by implementing smart agriculture in the sense of agro forestry so that we mitigate climate change,” he said.

Army spouses schooled on military etiquette

BENEDICT TEMBO

Zambia Army Commander Sitali Alibuzwi says military customs and traditions are significant to spouses of soldiers and officers. Lieutenant General Alibuzwi said military customs and traditions make the men in uniform and their spouses special in the civilian world, which does not see the value and purpose of such things.

Lt. Gen Alibuzwi was speaking when he launched the Army Ladies Association of Zambia (ALAZ) workshop at Arakan Barracks Banquet Hall in Lusaka Monday.

“Let me remind you that, the moment you decide to marry a military person, you become one as the Bible indicates; therefore, you are expected to always endeavour to live according to the dictates of the Army’s traditions and customs, ” The Army Commander said.

According to the Zambia Army public relations unit, Lt. Gen. Alibuzwi emphasised the need for military customs and traditions to be passed on to keep them alive.

“Traditions allow us to remember and celebrate the rich heritage of the Zambia Army, and you, our spouses, have always played a key role in this history,” Lt Gen Alibuzwi said.
He stressed that service spouses were frequently invited to military and other social functions where they were expected to behave as expected of them, hence the significance of such a workshop.

Lt Gen Alibuzwi said command would endeavour to continue supporting the holding of workshops of such nature.

“I urge you to continue on the same trajectory. “Funds allowing, we shall support you in taking the same lessons to major formations and units so that our families outside Lusaka could also benefit,” he said.

Director General Education, Library, and Museum Branch Brigadier General Kennedy Sialoombe has upheld command for the honour and resources to organise the workshop.
Brig Gen Sialoombe said the main aim of the workshop is to remind the Army spouses of the military customs and traditions that they are expected to observe in their daily conduct.

“At the end of the workshop, participants will be presented with certificates as a recognition and honour that they are qualified to pass on the knowledge to others, as we send them out there to preach the gospel of military customs and traditions,” he said.

And Zambia Army Military Assistant Brigadier General Jethrow Chipili, in his presentation encouraged the ladies to be cautious of the first impression they portray in public.
Brig Gen Chipili said a person’s first impression is crucial as it will impact how they are perceived everywhere.

And Zambia Army Director of Public Relations, Colonel Martin Liyungu said communication is an important tool in any organisation. Col. Liyungu also lectured the ladies on proper phone etiquette.

The workshop, which started on March 20 will run up to March 30, 2023. Some of the topics being covered include first impressions, the art of communication, social graces, military living, military roles, military functions, and social functions.
