PRESIDENT Sata’s vision was to have a national airline established by October 24 this year to coincide with the Golden Jubilee celebrations, Minister of Transport, Works, Supply and Communications Yamfwa Mukanga has said.

In an interview in Lusaka yesterday, Mr Mukanga said, however, that Government encountered challenges in establishing the airline by that date.

“The committee that is in place is doing everything possible to ensure that the national airline is established soon,” Mr Mukanga said.

He said Government is also putting up measures to ensure that mistakes that caused the liquidation of Zambia Airways are avoided.

Sata was a distinguished man, selfless, complete, action-oriented, man of the people and loved by the people-Nawa

“YOU were a distinguished man, selfless and complete. You were action-oriented, a man of the people and loved by the people. Words fail us to express the loss we feel over your passing on,” said former Lusaka mayor Patricia Nawa in a moving tribute to President Sata yesterday.

Hers was among the many glowing tributes that have continued to be poured on late President Sata, who will be buried today at Lusaka’s Embassy Park.

Hundreds of councillors from across the country led by the Lusaka City Council (LCC) yesterday held a valedictory service for President Sata at Mulungushi International Conference Centre.

Ms Nawa, a seasoned councillor, read out a moving tribute to President Sata during the service that lasted 30 minutes.

“You were our alderman. You served the poor while you were a councillor for Bauleni in 1980. Later, you became Governor for Lusaka and your works are still here to bear witness of your service,” she said.

The service for councillors from across the country was presided over by the defence forces comprising the Zambia Army, Zambia Air Force and Zambia National Service.

Lusaka deputy mayor Potiphar Tembo later led all the councillors in paying their last respects to the man who transformed local government in a viable entity.

Outside was the gun carrier bearing a sparkling copper eagle on the number plate ready to move President Sata’s casket.

At Parliament, Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) executive director Pukuta Mwanza urged Zambians to remain united in prayer and give President Sata a befitting send-off.

In an opening prayer during a thanks-giving ceremony for the late President, Reverend Mwanza said Zambians should resist the temptation tribal or political conflict.

“We want to give thanks to God for all that President Sata did and achieved. Death is such a painful calling. It robs us of people we dearly love,” Rev Mwanza said.

Bwengwa UPND Member of Parliament Highive Hamududu said Zambians should heed the call to be peaceful and united.

And National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’is of Zambia Director of Office of External Affairs Margaret Lengwe has said President Sata’s actions demonstrated an aspiration for justice and equity.

“As we pause to pay our respects and to honour his memory through this gathering, we also look forward to a future of unshakeable unity among all the people of Zambia, working hand in hand for the efflorescence of a just, equitable and prosperous nation,” Ms Lengwe said.

She was speaking during an Inter-faith devotional gathering at National Baha’i Centre in Lusaka on Sunday evening.
The gathering was also attended by Government officials, MPs, the diplomatic community and civil society.

And MPs have described late President Sata as an experienced parliamentarian who served Mpika Central and Kabwata constituencies diligently.

Chipili MP Davies Mwila (PF) said he was mentored into a seasoned politician by President Sata.

Lunte MP Felix Mutati (MMD) said taking President Sata’s body to Parliament was significant and a sign of bringing together political players who will be critical in the next three months.

He urged politicians and Zambians to unite and put personal ambitions below the national agenda.

Meanwhile, Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC) general secretary Cleopas Lungu has urged politicians to honour the memory of President Sata by fulfilling his desires of developing the country.

“President Sata’s wishes and desires were to develop the economy, improve the road network and provide the nation with a Constitution that would stand the test of time. Politicians and leaders have now been charged with the responsibility of bringing his desires to fruition,” he said during an inter-denominational church service in honour of President Sata at Parliament yesterday.

President Sata was a perfectionist-Guy Scott

7

An unidentified relative to the first family mourning Sata in front of the late president's placard
PRESIDENT Sata was a perfectionist, acting President Guy Scott has said.

Dr Scott said a number of things have changed for the better since the Patriotic Front (PF) formed government in 2011 because President Sata did not want to sacrifice high standards of education or health for anything.

“He wanted everything done in the most perfect way,” he said.

Dr Scott said this on Sunday night in his tribute to President Sata on Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation Television (ZNBC) television.

He also said Mr Sata was a radical as he did not think whites were any different.

“I even doubted whether I would be Vice-President because I thought it would be a political risk and I feel like I owe him so much,” he said.

He said he first met with President Sata at the first MMD national convention in 1991 and their friendship grew stronger each day.

Dr Scott said he has been left with the responsibility of keeping the PF and country together in honour of Mr Sata, adding that it will be “very difficult to fit his boots”.

He said President Sata was a complex individual who had a way of interacting with people and extended it to young ones.

Dr Scott said President Sata was a simple man who also loved living a simple life.

He said he will miss Mr Sata for a number of reasons, including the fact that he was like a father and a teacher to him.

“He was a much more experienced politician than me and I learnt a lot from him. He was more like my father and teacher,” Dr Scott said.

He said late President Sata had an exciting life just as much as he was an exciting man.

And Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) executive director Pukuta Mwanza has warned politicians against making provocative decisions that could cause confusion.

Speaking on Muvi TV programme The Assignment on Sunday evening, Reverend Mwanza said, “It is disappointing, why should people rush into debating on who should succeed President Sata. It is like they were waiting for him to die.”

President Sata always left a footprint wherever he went because he was action-oriented,” Mr Mugabe said.

Mr Mugabe said it is important for leaders to leave a story on what they did for the people they met in life.

Later, after signing a book of condolences at State House, Mr Mugabe said unlike some leaders who sought high office for financial gains, Mr Sata worked to emancipate people from poverty by enhancing development.

The Zambian Road Safety Trust (ZRST) on Sunday 09th November 2014, joined the rest of the nation in paying their last respect to the late President, His Excellency Mr. Michael Chilufya Sata whom ZRST Chairman, Mr. Daniel Mwamba, described as a Champion of Road Safety.

Mr. Mwamba led ZRST Board members, staff and volunteers in paying their last respect to President Sata who played a major role in launching the TRUST by directing the Minister of Transport, Works, Supply & Communication, Honourable Yamfwa Mukanga, MP, to spearhead the launch on April 26, 2014.Mr. Mwamba said the late President, upon knowing of the Trust played a major role behind the scenes. President Sata was personally involved in launching the Trust. He understood its vision and realised that the Zambian government alone cannot manage to reduce the current road trauma. President Sata knew that road safety is a shared responsibility and all concerned sectors need to work together to ensure safety and minimise accidents.

He said in the past 6 months after the Trust’s launch, the Trust has grown in numbers to over a 1000 volunteers in Lusaka , Copperbelt and recently Northern province. The trust has trained 500 volunteers in Road Traffic Management who are equipped with skills to help police traffic regulate traffic as traffic wardens at anytime and also educate road users. In partnership with the Zambia Red Cross Society have trained 50 volunteers in first-aid to support our post-crash initiative. Further, the Trust has also partnered with the largest hospital
in Zambia, University Teaching Hospital -Surgical department, to support victims to traffic accidents. A vital project currently managed by a team of highly dedicated volunteers.

Under the Trust’ research objective, in July 2014, the Trust carried out successfully a seatbelt survey of 200 vehicles and 300 vehicle occupants during a morning rush hour. The survey unveiled an alarming low seat-belt wearing rates of less than 54% in Lusaka. Following these gloomy findings, the Trust carried out a seatbelt education campaign to 900 vehicle passengers and drivers at Lusaka Intercity Bus Station. And in August, 2014 the Trust undertook a pedestrian survey on Mumbwa Road which was recently expanded into a dual-carriage way.

The Trust’s finding was of poor road safety awareness among pedestrians which has resulted in an increase in fatalities on this road.Mr. Mwamba said The Trust actions have not stopped there. In October 2014, the Trust partnered with the PUMA Energy Foundation and the international road safety NGO – Amend, to launch a Child Road Safety programme which PUMA Energy Zambia actively supports. The Trust has also undertaken primary school education campaign to 9000 school children in the past 3 months.

The global rate of deaths and injuries resulting from road traffic crashes is increasing at an alarming rate. The WHO estimates that, each year, almost 1.24 million people die in road crashes worldwide and as many as 50 million are injured or disabled. Every month a silent tsunami wave of road traffic accidents sweeps away 100,000 lives. In Zambia, road traffic deaths and injuries represent a serious and rapidly worsening public health crisis. Last year, 1,853 people were killed on the country’s roads. Among these were vulnerable children who face grave risks as they walk to and from school every day.
Mr. Mwamba said His Excellency, the Late President Mr. Michael Chilufya Sata did not want anyone to die from preventable road crashes. The Zambian Road Safety Trust will miss the leadership, inspiration, passion and energy that the president possessed on issues of Road Safety
