Low youth day celebration turnout irks Milenge Council Chairperson

0

Milenge Town Council Chairperson, Clement Mwila, has bemoaned the low turn out of youths for this year’s youth day commemoration which was held at Milenge primary school.

Mr Mwila said he was disappointed that a huge number of public service workers who are youths did not attend the event.

Mr Mwila said this when he officiated at the event which was held under the theme; ‘Transforming Minds for Accelerated Youth Development’.

He has since tasked Milenge District Administrative Officer, Chola Kanonka, to caution public service workers against shunning national events.

“It is unfortunate that only school going children and a few heads of government departments have come for this commemoration. This culture should come to an end,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Mwila has called on youths to double their efforts in producing goods and services that will socially and economically improve their livelihoods.

He said youths were the major drivers of the economy hence the need to increase their levels of production.

He also urged youths to take advantage of the various empowerment opportunities government is implementing under the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts and others such as the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

Mr Mwila added that government is in the process of constructing a skills training centre in Milenge.

“Government is aware of the challenges youths are facing in the district regarding access to skills training. We are working with area Member of Parliament, Saka Chonde, to see to it that the construction of Milenge Trades School is resumed,” he said.

Earlier, Milenge youths representative, Elijah Ng’andwe, called on government to simplify the process of accessing funds from various empowerment programmes.

Mr Ng’andwe, who is also a teacher at Milenge Secondary School, observed that the procedure is too cumbersome for an average youth in a rural area.

He said because of the complicated procedures, some intended beneficiaries are failing to access the monies.

He also called on the local authority to put up recreation facilities in the district so as to deter young people from engaging in illicit activities.

“The lack of recreation facilities in Milenge is a contributing factor to substance abuse and promiscuity among young people. We are calling on government to address this issue in order to create platforms for acceptable social activities for young people,” he said.

Masebo counsels Chongwe youths

3

Chongwe Member of Parliament, Sylvia Masebo, has cautioned youths in her constituency not to be used by politicians to disrupt peace and unity in the country.

Ms Masebo, who is also Minister of Health, says it is saddening that some politicians are using youths for destruction at the expense of developing themselves and contributing positively to national development.

She was speaking during the 2023 youth day celebrations in Chongwe today.

She encouraged the youths to have a mindset change and direct their efforts towards growth by seizing many opportunities which government has presented to them.

Ms Masebo has further encouraged youths to take advantage of the increased Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and work together to find ways in which they can benefit from the funds.

The Chongwe lawmaker has meanwhile warned youths involved in illegal land allocation and mining that they will face the wrath of the law.

She said government is willing to support youths with land resources and mining licenses to enable them conduct the activities in a legal and acceptable manner.

Ms Masebo has since directed the District Commissioner’s office to come up with recreation facilities and empowerment initiatives that will help prevent youths from engaging in illegalities and in alcohol and drug abuse.

Meanwhile, Adricks Makasa, who gave a statement of purpose on behalf of the youths in Chongwe, called on his fellow youths to have a mindset change and become more creative, innovative, hardworking and responsible in order to win the trust and confidence of leaders.

Mr Makasa said youths in Chongwe are trying hard to contribute to the development agenda but continue to face some challenges hence they need government intervention.

He mentioned lack of opportunities to participate in decision making, high youth unemployment and job insecurity as some of the challenges faced by the youths in the district.

Mr Makasa added that lack of a skills development centre, special education schools and facilities and lack of a Ministry of Sport office at the district level are other challenges faced.

This year’s youth day celebrations are being held under the theme:’ transforming minds for accelerated youth development’.

Boy, 5, dies after taking Kachasu

6

A five-year-old boy in Masaiti district in the Copperbelt Province has died after drinking illicit liquor popularly known as Kachasu.

Aaron Chisenga of Kabundi village in chief Chiwala’s area in Masaiti district died after his father, Peter Chisenga, allegedly gave him the illicit liquor to drink.

Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer, Peacewell Mweemba, said the incident happened yesterday, March 11, 2023 between 01:00 hours and 06:00 hours in the morning.

Mr Mweemba told ZANIS that the mother to the deceased child, Delia Ndimani aged 46, reported the matter to Mapalo police.

He said fact are that Ndimani left home on Friday, March 10, 2023 in the evening to go for a charcoal business far away from home and left the children in the custody of their father.

He explained that when she returned home early the following morning around 05:00hrs, she discovered that one of the children, who is now deceased, was not in good condition and unable to talk.

Mr Mweemba stated that she inquired from her other children about what had happened and she was told that their father shared some number one Kachasu around 01:30hrs with the deceased who later became unwell.

He said the child was rushed to a nearby health facility and later referred to Arthur Davison Children’s hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Mr Mweemba revealed that the police made a follow-up but found that the suspect had run away.

The body of the deceased has since been deposited in Arthur Davison Children’s hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.

ZANACO Bank honour Annie Mukabe’s contribution to broadcasting in Zambia

By Benedict Tembo

FOR veteran broadcaster Annie Mukabe, scooping the inaugural ZANACO CEO’s award during the Zee Women’ s Banking Awards ceremony came as a breath of fresh air. It has also given her impetus to do her best.

The Zee Women’s Banking Awards given out last Friday, are intended to recognise women who have made a positive impact in their areas of expertise.
Zanaco chief executive officer Mukwandi Chibesakunda said as part of the bank’s continued support and appreciation for the female population, it launched the The Zee Women’s Banking Awards.

“It is a great feeling to be recognised in that manner and I will always be grateful to ZANACO CEO Mukwandi Chibesakunda and her team,” Mrs Mukabe said.
She says she would not be where she is today without the help of many broadcasters (both living and dead) who over the years shared their knowledge and experience unflinchingly.

It has been a great journey of her 34 years unbroken service with the Zambia National Brodacsting Corporation (ZNBC) and she thanks management for giving her the opportunity to serve in different capacities, as this has broadened her understanding of broadcasting and the role that each unit/ directorate plays in service delivery.

“My best years in the institution were the decade 1990- 2000 when I worked as a producer for the current affairs programmes Tonight and Focus. I enjoyed going in the field and interviewing people from different walks of life,” Mrs Mukabe says
She remembers going to a primary school in Kitwe’s Kwacha Township where Grade Seven pupils sitting for their final exams were made to share question papers.

“That was a scoop and we got the story on camera. The District Education Board Secretary then was Mrs Nsemiwe (late) who was not very happy with the ZNBC crew. The story was aired on Focus, and after that, there was a decree that all head teachers needed to get clearance from the DEB’s office before talking to the press,” Mrs Mukabe says

She also worked on the News desk for several years and in those days, to raise standards, the Director General then Steven Moyo introduced News Caster of the Month awards.

“The competition was stiff but I remember scooping these awards on several occasions. This was good in itself because we all wanted to be recognised for our effort and it was not strange to see those casting the news reporting early and going through their scripts over and over again, enquiring from the more experienced sub-editors how to pronounce difficult names/words,” Mrs Mukabe says.

She says it was a great experience casting news with the more experienced staff that included Peter Mweemba, Margaret Zimba, Harold Besa, Marc Boti, Doris Mulenga, Maureen Nkandu and Jospeh Kuluneta, among others.

And even when Mrs Mukabe started climbing the ladder getting promoted to HOPO / Controller TV, she continued producing programmes.

“Some of the productions I initiated include Poetry Corner on Radio 2, Fun Time (children’s programme) Let’s Cook (lifestyle), Going Green (environmental programme) visiting ordinary people’s gardens, both men and women sharing their passion on gardening. The rationale behind this was to foster an attitude change in the way Zambians look after the environment,” she says

Apart from this, Mrs Mukabe was involved in group productions she anchored Race to Manda Hill, Lunch Break and Good Morning Zambia. To this day, she is still passionate about programme production and discusses with colleagues on programme ideation as well as how best ZNBC can improve its in-house productions.

“Working in Corporate Affairs has enabled me to appreciate the manner in which the corporation engages with its stakeholders, explaining why we have to follow certain standards as we deliver on our mandate, and at the end of the day, ensuring that our clients as well as our listeners and viewers derive satisfaction from our services,” Mrs Mukabe says.

She is a mother of three (two boys and a girl), all working as computer scientists in the private sector.

“I am proud of who they have become, and I am no longer as strict as I used to be when they were younger, as they lead very independent lives now,” Mrs Mukabe says

She was born at Malcolm Watson Hospital in Mufulira. Her parents both worked in the Mufulira Division of Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM).
“My mum was a nurse while dad was personnel officer. I come from a family of 10 and I am the seventh born. We have lost five siblings,” Mrs Mukabe says
She did her primary school at Mufulira Trust and went on to Kantanshi Secondary School, after which her father was transferred to Nkana Division – and I changed schools and moved to Helen Kaunda Secondary School.

“Upon completion of my ‘O’ levels in 1986, I took a gap year traveling to Kabwe to visit my best friend Dorothy Nsai (late) and was a little involved in some youth projects. I did a Diploma course in Journalism at Africa Literature Centre in 1988, with a one-month internship at the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) in Lusaka and was one of the few lucky ones to have been offered a job before we even graduated, with my friend Chabala Chimpampa,” she says

Timeline:

  1. She was offered a job as a trainee Announcer/Presenter at ZNBC on December 18, 1988.
  2. 1990, she moved to Kitwe as a TV Producer
  3. Between 1995-2005, she served as Head of Production and Operations both In Kitwe and Lusaka
  4. Between 2009-2016, she served as Controller Television (Lusaka) and moved in the same capacity as Controller Programmes in Kitwe.
  5. 2018 she was promoted to Regional Controller based in Kitwe and in charge of the Northern region (North Western, Luapula, Northern, Muchinga and Copperbelt provinces)
  6. August 2020 she was transferred laterally to Lusaka to work as Head Corporate Affairs.

Power Coach Says Mighty Gave Them a Tough Time

Power Dynamos coach Mwenya Chipepo admits Mighty Mufulira Wanderers gave them a good run for their money en route to the 2023 ABSA Cup semifinals.

The two-time ABSA Cup champions beat Mighty 1-0 on Saturday in the quarterfinals played at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.

Mighty were no pushovers at times out-passing their old foes and showing why they are they are favourites for FAZ Super League promotion from FAZ National Division 1 where they are second in the top four promotion slot.

“It was a tough game. It was not easy playing a team from Division 1,” Chipepo said.

“Wanderers are a legendary side and came prepared for this match and we expected that.”

36th minute substitute Jacob Kaunda made an instant
impact with a sweet strike from the edge of the box to score what would ultimately be Power’s ticket to the ABSA Cup semifinals.

“Our aim was to score an early goal and I am happy we did just that,” Chipepo said.

Power will face Forest Rangers in the last four during the weekend of April 8-9.

Forest also won by 1-0 after eliminating 2017 champions Green Buffaloes.

This is the first time Forest have reached the ABSA Cup semifinals in their third-ever qualification for the competition.

2013 winners Red Arrows will take on FC MUZA in the day’s last kickoff of Sunday’s doubleheader at Nkoloma.

Zanaco Bank rewards outstanding Zambian women

5

By Benedict Tembo

ZANACO Bank chief executive officer Mukwandi Chibesakunda says despite the myriad of challenges faced in attaining gender parity, it is important to celebrate the gains women have scored over the years in all facets of development.

Ms Chibesakunda said this was evidenced by the great work ladies were doing in respective spaces.

She noted that a lot needs to be done for more women to actively participate in the socio-economic development of the country and achieve inclusive growth.

“With the United Nations declaring gender equality among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to achieve inclusive growth by 2030, allow me to inform you that at Zanaco, we are aligned with these aspirations,” Ms Chibesakunda said.

On the eve of the 2023 Women’s International Day, Ms Chibesakunda said Zanaco Bank continues to increase its emphasis on women’s empowerment through various interventions such as the women’s banking proposition called Zee Women’s Banking, which it launched last year aimed at ensuring access to affordable finance, markets and information for its female customers.

“Through Zee Women’s Banking, we are providing collateral free loans provided they meet the terms and conditions, and our interest on these loans is 20 percent in the first year. Through our alliance partners, we create access to markets and information for our Zee women,” she said.

Ms Chibesakunda said it has been a wonderful journey for the bank with its Zee women and “I can only encourage all the women in this room to become Zee women.”

She said as part of the bank’s continued support and appreciation for its female population, it launched the Zee women’s banking awards which are intended to recognise women who have made a positive impact in their areas of expertise.

Ms Chibesakunda said there was need to stress the ever-evolving presence of technology and innovation in people’s lives, which can be a great enabler for the advancement of gender equality.

“We at Zanaco fully support the UN secretary-general António Guterres’s call to close the digital divide and increase the representation of women and girls in science and technology,” she said.

According to the UN chief’s recent message, women’s exclusion from the digital world has shaved an estimated US$1 trillion from the gross domestic product (GDP) of low- and middle-income countries in the last decade — a loss that could grow to US$1.5 trillion by 2025 without action, hence the need to uplift more women into the science and technology space.

TAZAMA Pipeline Conversion Process Nears Completion, Offers Hope for Cheaper Diesel Prices in Zambia

8

The process of converting TAZAMA pipeline from a conduit conveying commingled feedstock for refinery to one carrying finished product (diesel) is at 90% of all works and it will be completed by Saturday next week (18th March 2023),” said Hon. Eng. Peter Chibwe Kapala, the Minister of Energy.

“All the crude oil (commingled feedstock), which was in the pipeline from the time Indeni Refinery was shut down by the PF government in April 2021 up to now, has since been removed, stored and is ready to be ‘refined’. This is about 78,000 tonnes or 80 million litres of fuel (petrol and diesel),” Hon. Kapala added.

The INDENI plant is expected to fire up and start processing the commingled feedstock by next Saturday, March 18th. “Once the commingled feedstock has been processed and sold, the funds raised will be used to pay for the costs incurred in cleaning and converting the pipeline, pay some of the debts owed by TAZAMA Pipeline Limited and for the operations and maintenance of facilities of TAZAMA Pipeline,” said Hon. Kapala.

Government, through the Treasury, already released K500m to INDENI for payment of redundancies for all workers and another K32 million for clearing of debts as well as for operations.

“The cleaned-up pipeline will be used to pump diesel from Dar es Salaam to Ndola using the older and smaller pipe while the newer bigger-gauge pipe will pump finished products to Mpika terminal for uptake by tankers. The New Dawn Government shall expand the storage facilities and also increase numbers of pumping and loading gantries at Mpika to allow for better and more efficient conveyance. All diesel to be offloaded at Ndola and Mpika shall be transported to parts of Zambia using Zambian tankers only. The operationalisation of TAZAMA Pipeline to carry finished products will reduce the pump price of diesel as transportation costs will be reduced,” Hon. Kapala said.

“Government is also working on reducing pump prices of both petrol and diesel by introducing bulk purchases of petroleum products, where Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) pool resources together and order at a known price and one which the government would have negotiated. Currently, the procurement is liberal and disaggregated and this doesn’t help the consumer in many ways,” Hon. Kapala added.

MONTHLY REVIEW OF FUEL PUMP PRICES TO REMAIN IN PLACE

“Due to sensational media reports to the contrary, I wish to restate that the New Dawn Government has no plans to revert to previous ways of adjusting fuel prices after months, as that makes it hard to manage the debts owed to oil marketing companies and doesn’t make the pump price to be cost-reflective,” said Hon. Kapala.

“At no point in my recent media interviews has my office said that we are going back to the quarterly review system. As things start, we shall continue with monthly review to allow consumers to only pay for true costs. The completion of the cleaning of the TAZAMA pipeline – and the subsequent use of it to transport diesel at a cheaper transportation cost – doesn’t automatically mean we shall revert to the quarterly review. What we are saying is that, with the use of the pipeline, bulk purchases and bulk storage can allow for quarterly reviews because then as a country we can stock fuels for about three months and this allows us to tie the pump price to true costs. Even then, it will simply be a consideration. And if the numbers are right, we can revert to quarterly review. Until then there is no plan to move from monthly reviews. Monthly reviews

Zambia Celebrates Youth Day, Focusing on Development and Protection

2

Today marks the celebration of Youth Day in Zambia, a day that highlights the importance of young people and their place in society. The theme for this year’s Youth Day is “Youth Development and Protection in a Changing World”.

The celebration of Youth Day is an annual event that aims to bring attention to youth issues and recognize the contributions young people make in various areas such as education, employment, and social justice.

President of the Socialist Party, Fred M’membe, emphasized the significance of youth in his message, stating that “youths are not future leaders, but leaders of today. The future is not built in the future but on the threshold of the decisions and actions we take today.”

Focal areas for youth development and protection include education, employment, and the environment. It is crucial to protect and care for the younger generation and show concern for their growth.

Young people have to study and work while still at the age of physical growth, and as such, attention must be paid both to their work and study, and to their recreation, sport, and rest.

Zambia belongs to the young people, and their vigor and vitality are crucial to the country’s future. President M’membe urged young people to understand that Zambia is still a poor country, and only through their united efforts can the country become strong and prosperous.

The establishment of the Socialist Party is a step towards the ideal society of the future, but hard work is required to translate this vision into reality. Youth Day serves as a reminder of the importance of youth in Zambia’s future and the need to invest in their development and protection.

Patriotic Front urges youths to turn-out in large numbers on National Youth Day

As the country prepares to commemorate National Youth Day on Sunday 12th March, the Patriotic Front has called on youths to participate in the march pasts that will take place across the country. The party has urged the youths to follow Covid-19 health guidelines, but turn-out in large numbers to mark the special day.

In a statement issued by Hon. Raphael Mangani Nakacinda, Chairperson of Information and Publicity and member of the Central Committee, the party recognized that there have been futile attempts to limit the participation of youths in the national day. Therefore, the youths are advised to ignore such calls and turn-out in large numbers as this is their official day that comes once in a year.

Zambia celebrates Youth Day every 12th March to remember the contribution of the nation’s youth to Zambian society. With 65% of the population under the age of 25, the country has a high percentage of young people. Unfortunately, many of them face huge challenges of unemployment, limited educational and skills opportunities, and poverty.

It is for this reason that the Patriotic Front believes that the commemoration should focus on proposing solutions that will help the youth overcome these economic and social challenges. The party is also concerned about the rise of vices such as drug and substance abuse, alcohol abuse, delinquency, and other vices affecting young people and derailing their productivity.

Therefore, the party has called on youths to maintain peace and order during the entire celebrations and processions. They have also encouraged the youths to focus on positive activities that will empower them and their communities.

The Patriotic Front has emphasized that youths should be in school, in training, in jobs, or in entrepreneurship. The party hopes that the commemoration of National Youth Day will serve as a catalyst for youth development and that the youths will take advantage of the opportunities available to them.

Issued by Hon. Raphael Mangani Nakacinda, Chairperson of Information and Publicity, and member of the Central Committee, Patriotic Front.

Shielding our leaders from reality on the ground; the case of President Chiluba

6

By Prince Bill M. Kaping’a Political/Social Analyst

Today, the president is scheduled to travel to the Copperbelt province on a 5 day working visit. He is expected to commission and inspect some projects, meet the clergy and our traditional leaders and of course, have tete-a-tete with party members. This is a brilliant initiative indeed!

But why would a president want to meet party members in the first place? This is the only way the president can gather first hand information from people on the ground…….listen to their complaints, get to know whatever issues they may be grappling with.

You see, most people that vie for such positions usually have grand aspirations for their citizens unless of course they found themselves in such positions by accident……ifyabu pyani! However, there are always individuals that tend to be stumbling blocks…..and these are non other than senior government or party officials.

We’ll give a typical example.

Mid 1990s, President Chiluba travelled to Kitwe to commission the newly constructed Wesley Nyirenda Basic School with the support from the World Bank. On their way from South Downs Airstrip in Kalulushi, the presidential motorcade used a road that had recently been worked on in readiness for the presidential visit.

As the procession wound its way back via the same route once the programme was over, Chiluba instructed his driver to make a detour. As one would imagine, the security detail and government entourage was gripped with alarm! Why would the president want to use Chinyunyu Road? What was he thinking?

When the entourage finally caught up with him, in his usual wit he commended the Town Clerk for the great job fixing the road in question. You should have seen their looks…..they all had big eggs on their faces! The road was scarred with not potholes, but craters!

A week later, a contractor promptly mobilized on site to work on the deplorable road. It would be important to emphasize that the president was once a labour leader; his union had property in the area and was obviously privy to the state of the road.

What are we getting at?

As President Hichilema comes to Kitwe, he must not allow his security detail or protocol officers to shield him away from the truth. He must have one on ones with ordinary folks so as to get a better understanding of the needs of our people.

ZAFFICO justifies its sharp increase of the price of its Products

3

Zambia Forestry and Forest Industrial Corporation (ZAFFICO) has justified its recent controversial move to hike the price of timber in 2023.

ZAFFICO has increased the price for pine by 25% and 85% for eucalyptus.

The sharp increase in price for timber has been opposed by sawmillers and allied traders.

Just last week a group of female sawmillers and allied traders staged a protest outside the ZAFFICO head office in Ndola to object the timber price hike.

But ZAFFICO Public Relations Manager, Ireen Lungu Chipili has said the corporation’s decision to increase the price for timber is due to the change in the economic and business environment of the country.

Speaking on a Radio Icengelo Programme in Ndola, Ms Chipili said ZAFFICO’s costs of production have gone because of the general increase in prices of goods and services in the country

Ms.Chipili said the recent upward adjustment in prices for pine and eucalyptus was intended at responding to the current economic situation and to sustain the operations of the corporation.

She said the increase of 20 percent is a cost reflective of the prevailing economic factors in Zambia.

“The increment that we have implemented is very cost reflective. Forestry management or plantation management in general have different processes and in particular there is heavy use of equipment or machinery so the fuel increment or the price adjustments that we have been having in this country are a huge factor. Like I said the distances involved in the operations that we run as a corporation that is a key factor. The issue of chemicals that border on foreign exchange. Everything has gone up, so we are basically responding to the prevailing economic conditions in the country. I think even the ordinary person out there will agree that even the price at which we are buying a loaf of bread has gone up,” Ms. Chipili said.

Last month, the Zambia National Association of Sawmillers (ZNAS) rejected the decision by Zambia Forestry and Forest Industries Corporation (ZAFFICO) to increase the price for pine and eucalyptus (timber) by 25% and 85% respectively.

At a media briefing in Kitwe, ZNAS General Secretary Derrick Chilatu said the association objected to the proposal of hiking prices of timber arguing that ZAFFICO needed to consult widely on the matter.

Mr. Chilatu said the association is surprised that ZAFFICO has started issuing offer letters indicating the new prices which were still under discussion.

“ZAFFICO has indicated new prices which have increased by 25% for pine and 85% for eucalyptus, a matter which is still under discussion and not yet concluded. Accepting the offer also entails accepting the terms and conditions under which the business will be conducted; which were not attached, but are also under discussion with ourselves. Despite the incompleteness of the offer package, our members have been forced to accept the offers under duress,” Mr. Chilatu said.

The association is demanding that ZAFFICO suspend the sales of pine and eucalyptus until all matters under discussion have been concluded with all associations.

“We would like therefore to appeal to the President of the Republic of Zambia Mr. Hakainde Hichilema who is the father of the nation to intervene in this matter. As an Association, we remain committed to our values of promoting dialogue and peaceful resolution of issues. We shall remain available for engagement at any time and we appeal to our members to remain calm and peaceful as we pursue all the issues using dialogue,” he stated.

Opposition leader Kasonde Mwenda on the run after leading protest, 23 others arrested for unlawful assembly

Police in Lusaka are on the hunt for the opposition Economic Freedom Fighters –EFF- leader Kasonde Mwenda, who is currently evading arrest. Mr. Mwenda is the mastermind behind a planned protest against the awarding of a tender to micro ocean consortium to construct the Ndola-Lusaka dual carriage way.

According to Deputy Police Public Relations Officer Danny Mwale, “brief facts are that Mr. Mwenda, on March 3, 2023, notified the police about a peaceful demonstration his political party intended to hold on March 10, 2023. In order not to disturb the peace of other members of the public, Mr. Mwenda was called by police and advised to indicate the route they were to use, from civic center to Boma Court and total number of the marchers but failed to respond to police request until yesterday around 14:00 hours when police were informed that a group of people had gathered at Civic Center.”

However, upon arriving at the police station, Mr. Mwenda managed to evade arrest and escape. Twenty-three other people who were part of the planned protest were apprehended and are currently in police custody for the offense of unlawful assembly.

The suspects include four females and nineteen males, with ages ranging from 20 to 49. They were identified as Abel Musonda, Jeff Filamba, George Mwenyumbi, Zenus Daka, Joseph Lungu, Namo Phiri, Moses Nyirenda, Beatrice Pilo, Bwalya Katongo, Coaster Museke, Bwembya Mubanga, Bale Suzi, Ibrahim Kabwe Mwamba, Kamau Nathan, Danny Kalenga, Gift Nguni, Gilbert Njovu, Collins Muyunda, Thomas Mvula, Nkole Mubanga, Astone Mwanza, Moses Nyirenda, and Victor Malauni.

Mr. Mwale further explained, “Officers moved in and apprehended the 23 suspects who are currently in Police custody charged with the offence of Unlawful Assembly. They will appear in court soon.”

The Economic Freedom Fighters have been a vocal opposition party, and their leader’s actions have caused some controversy. Some supporters of the party are accusing the government of stifling their right to protest peacefully.

One supporter who wished to remain anonymous stated, “This is a clear violation of our rights as citizens of Zambia. We have the right to peaceful protest, and the government is trying to silence us by arresting our leader and other party members.”

Meanwhile, the police have urged members of the public to remain calm and continue going about their daily activities. “We assure members of the public that we are doing everything in our power to ensure the safety and security of all citizens,” Mr. Mwale said.

Efforts to reach Mr. Mwenda have been unsuccessful, as his mobile phone is switched off, and his whereabouts are currently unknown. The police are urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward and assist with the investigation.

Late Zambian President Rupiah Banda Brought Political Emancipation and Smooth Power Transition -HH

Zambia marked the first anniversary of the passing of former President Rupiah Bwezani Banda on March 11, 2023. In commemoration of the occasion, current President Hakainde Hichilema attended a memorial service held at the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Lusaka.

Speaking at the service, President Hichilema paid tribute to the late president, describing him as a great statesman who contributed to the smooth transition of power after the 2021 General Election. The president noted that the 2021 General Election was an emotional and tense one that was well-handled by former President Banda, who mediated between himself and his predecessor Edgar Lungu to ensure peace in the country.

President Hichilema also praised President Banda’s belief in democracy and the rule of law, which he said was unequivocal and firm. He added that the world had a lot to learn from the late president’s legacy, especially in terms of his unwavering commitment to social justice and equality. President Hichilema said that President Banda belonged to a generation of leaders that brought political emancipation to Zambia, standing against the wickedness and injustices associated with racism and all forms of discrimination.

In his remarks, President Hichilema urged all politicians and public servants to learn from the former president, who was known for his forgiveness and ability to maintain peace. He also described President Banda as a giant who was part of a group of freedom fighters that delivered independence to Zambia.

Representing the late president’s family and friends, James Banda, President Banda’s brother, asked President Hichilema to initiate a dialogue with his predecessor, Edgar Lungu, for love to exist between the two leaders. He said there was a lot of goodwill between the two national leaders, and there was a need for them to start talking to each other.

In her tribute to her husband, Thandiwe Banda said the last 12 months had not been easy for her, but she was grateful for the support she had received from family and friends. She noted how much courage and work she had to employ to live without the former president.

President Banda’s children and grandchildren also read tributes, represented by Alice Johnson and Sarah Banda, respectively. Meanwhile, representing family friends, President Banda’s former press aide, Dickson Jere, outlined five attributes that he said politicians could learn from the late leader. Mr. Jere listed some of them as humility, equity, and sportsmanship, which President Banda exhibited in his life.

In his homily, Vicar-General for the Cathedral, Charley Thomas, described President Banda’s memorial as a transition from mourning into healing. He noted that the service was an event of strengthening President Banda’s family, but also for the entire country to reflect on his contribution to national development. He described President Banda as a transitional person in several of his various works.

The memorial service for the late President Rupiah Bwezani Banda was attended by numerous individuals who paid their respects to a man who served his country with distinction. His legacy of social justice, equality, and democracy will continue to inspire generations of Zambians to come.
