Zanaco smash Mine Police

Leaders Zanaco maintained their place at the summit of the MTN/FAZ league with a 3-1 victory over Konkola Mine Police in a Week 10 fixture.

Mathews Macha scored a brace while Isaac Chansa continued his scoring streak adding a goal to build on his brace last weekend.

Macha opened the score on 15 minutes while Chansa doubled the lead in the 52nd minutes with the former concluding his brace in the 69th minute.

In Kitwe, 10-man Power Dynamos needed a last minute effort to reap their first three points since April, 20.

Richard Kasonde finished off an initial Julius Situmbeko shot that came off the post to give the demanding Power Dynamos supporters some relief.

Skipper Thomas Nyirenda was sent off in the 27th minute after two successive fouls targeting Paul Malama in the 23rd and 27th minute forcing referee Milton Mweemba to show him red.

Zesco United bounced off their humiliating 3-1 win away loss to Choma Eagles last weekend with an emphatic 3-0 win over Konkola Blades.

Goals from Lazarous Kambole, Jackson Mwanza and Mathews Nkowani handed George Lwandamina a huge result and lift his team to second place on the log on 21 points.

Zesco thump Konkola

Zesco United eased past Konkola Blades with a 3-0 win in the FAZ Super League Week 10 match at Trade Fair Grounds in Ndola on Sunday.

Goals from Mathews Nkhowani, Jackson Mwanza and Lazarous Kambole were enough to help Zesco recover from last weekend’s 3-1 loss at Green Eagles.

Nkhowani beat keeper Elliot Phiri with a low shot to hand Zesco a 29th minute lead before striker Jackson Mwanza doubled the lead from a Cletous Chama pass inside the box two minutes later.

Kambole sealed the win with a 70th minute solo effort goal after beating a cluster of Konkola defenders.

It was a well deserved victory for Zesco who dominated play in both halves.

Zesco could have scored more than three goals as Kangwa Chileshe and Zimiseleni Moyo saw their shots on target stopped by Phiri in the 8th and 22 minutes respectively.

Meanwhile, Zesco and Konkola players wore black arm bands and observed a minute of silence in honour of Nkana coach Masauso Mwale who died in a road traffic accident on Friday.

PF has delinked itself from Government-Kabimba

Justice Minister Wynter Kabimba

Patriotic Front Secretary General Wynter Kabimba says the ruling party has delinked itself from the decades old practice of ruling parties abusing government money for their operations.

Mr Kabimba says the PF, as a transparent party, uses its own resources from party members to fund its operations as opposed to stealing government resources.

The Justice Minister says upon assuming office in 2011, the PF completely separated its party finances from government so that tax payers money can be channeled to developmental activities to benefit the nation.

Paul Shalala reports from Kasama District that Mr Kabimba said this when he handed over a Regius minibus and a Toyota Hiace minibus to the PF Northern Province Executive for party operations.

Mr Kabimba later challenged the PF Northern Province Executive to use the donated vehicles to strengthen the party and mobilise its membership.

The two vehicles were bought by Zambia’s Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo Fidelis Kapoka and Second Secretary at the Zambian Embassy in China Frederick Chisanga who have donated them to the ruling party.

And PF Kasama District Acting Chairman John Chilopa promised Mr Kabimba that the party will use the vehicles for the benefit of the party.

Sports Minister Chishimba Kambwili has told Nkana players to win the 2014 CAF Confederation Cup in honour of their coach Masauso Mwale who died in a road accident on Friday.

Kambwili said winning the Confederation Cup would be the best way of mourning Mwale.

He was speaking to players after Saturday’s Confederation Cup Group B match between Nkana and Sewe Sport of Ivory Coast that finished 1-1 at Nkana Stadium in Kitwe.

Nkana met Sewe less than 24 hours after Mwale died in a car clash on the Ndola-Kitwe Duo carriage way near Maposa area in Luanshya.

“I want to urge you that the best way to mourn your coach is to go all the way through and win this tournament,” Kambwili said.

He praised Nkana’s character in the game against Sewe that came less than a day after Mwale’s death.

“We are very proud of you as government, you played well. It is not easy to lose a coach and you perform well as you did.”

Nkana’s next Confederation Cup match is against Etoile du Sahel on June 6 in Tunisia.

The ex-Chipolopolo assistant trainer died on Friday evening on his way from his Ndola home to Kitwe where he was to join Nkana in camp prior to Saturday’s CAF Confederation Cup Group B match against Sewe Sport from Ivory Coast that finished 1-1 in Kitwe.

Former President Rupiah Banda has urged Malawian President Joyce Banda to concede defeat in last weeks elections.

Mr Banda said Malawian have spoken and Dr Banda should listen and concede defeat.

The former President was speaking in an interview with Journalists in Lusaka shortly after attending the wreath laying at Freedom Statue to celebrate Africa Freedom Day.

“I don’t want to make a comment because I have not been following the happenings in that country closely but they are our neighbours and we are concerned. It is important that those that have lost should concede and proceed,” Mr Banda said.

The respected Statesman added, “When you enter an election, ony two things are expected. Either you will win or lose and it is therefore important that you concede when you lose.”

Mr Banda said it is easy for him to move on after he lost the 2011 elections because he had respected the will of Zambians.

“During our last rally in Mandevu, I said in my last campaign speech that we had campaigned through out the country but now it was the time for people to will speak and indeed over the next 48 Hours, Zambians spoke and as leaders will must listened.”

And on Africa Freedom Day, Mr Banda urged all Africans to cherish freedom.

“Freedom is precious and let us remain united. If we lose the peace we have, then all our development targets will just be a pipe dream because you cannot develop in the absence of peace,” he said.

He urged Zambians to safely guard the peace that the country enjoys.

“Let us look after our country well so that we don’t fall into problems like other countries.”

All the Zambian swimmers Goveia Ralph and Alex Axiotis have not reaped any medal after they finished fifth and sixth in their respective categories.

Goveia Ralph was competing in the men’s 13-18 100 meters butterfly category while his counterpart Alex Axiotis raced in the men’s 200 meters individual medal category but all lost.

Swimming Junior National team coach Ian Stephenson was disappointed that all his swimmers have failed to reap any medal and attributed the poor performance to lack of exposure.

Stephenson explained that Zambia swimmers lack exposure compared to South Africans who dominated the competition.

He noted that Zambia has only nine swimming clubs with very few swimmers while South Africa has about 300 clubs competing at high levels.

Meanwhile, Zambian male boxers have started their campaign at the ongoing 2nd African Youth Games on a good note after two boxers stormed the quarter finals in the competition being held at Botho University in Gaborone, Botswana.

Alfred Muwowo outpunched Morocco’s Said Martaji on unanimous point decision in the light flyweight category, while his colleague Timothy Chiyesu overwhelmed Lesotho’s Moses Motopi with a technical knockout in the bantamweight category.

However, upcoming Zambian boxer Nkumbu Silungwe disappointed his colleagues when he failed to progress to the knock out stages after he lost to Morocco’s Walid El Kehal in the light weight category.

However, Junior National team Boxing Coach Maybin Gunduzani is confident that his boxers will reap medals at the tournament.

ZANIS sports reports from Gaborone in an interview today that Gunduzani was positive that his boxers are fit to win medals in the finals.

He observed that going by the preparations made the Zambian boxers are stands a better chance of winning in the quarters and reach the finals of the competition.

Gunduzani is happy that his two boxers have qualified but noted that the other boxer who lost could have qualified but was too confident and underrated his opponent as he was too powerful but ended up losing points.

MMD youths advises government to concentrate on real copper not the black mountain

MMD die hard youth leader Bowman Lusambo captured during the gathering to demand for the release of the Zambian draft constitution.

MMD youths have called on government to concentrate on maximizing tax from “real copper coming from the mines” as opposed to taxing scavengers at the black mountain which is a copper waste dump cite.

Speaking in an interview in Lusaka, MMD Die Hard Youth coordinator Bowman Lusambo observed that it is sad that government is concentrating on a dump cite when the mines in the country are just paying a fraction of the tax they are suppose to be paying.

“As MMD youths we would like to urge the ministries of finance and Mines as well as the president Mr Michael Sata to live the people of Copperbelt and Kitwe in particular alone. The black mountain which they are talking about is the waste they should concentrate on the real copper and how these guys (mining companies)pay tax to Zambia.”

He called on the PF government to live the youths who are surviving from the black mountain and channel their effort in ensuring that Zambians benefit from their copper and other natural resources.

And Mr. Lusambo has charged that certain individuals in government want to benefit from the black mountain.

“I know that they people who want to benefit from the the black mountain is not really the Zambian people, it is these crooks the PF MPs and Ministers that is why come 2016 they will not see any votes from the copperbelt,” Mr Lusambo charged.

He further called on the youths whose livelihood is dependant on scavenging at the black mountain not to lose hope as the MMD will ensure that it gives back the black mountain to the local community once the party bounces back to power.

HH’s African Freedom Day Message

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

24th MAY 2014

OFFICIAL STATEMENT
BY
HAKAINDE HICHILEMA

AFRICAN FREEDOM DAY 2014

On 15 April 1958, in Accra, Ghana, African leaders and political activists gathered at the first Conference of Independent African States. The Conference called for the founding of African Freedom Day, a day to “mark each year the onward progress of the liberation movement, and to symbolize the determination of the People of Africa to free themselves from foreign domination and exploitation.” Five years later, specifically On 25 May 1963, leaders of thirty-two then independent African states met to form the Organization of African Unity (OAU). By then more than two-thirds of the continent had achieved independence, from imperial European states. This meeting changed the African freedom day date from 15 April to 25 May. The day was then declared African Liberation day. This is very significant in the sense that indeed Africans must be liberated in line with their own aspirations. The question is; has Africa achieved the aspirations of its founding leaders in this regard? Have the negative experiences we as a people went through under the york of colonialism been reversed?

Independence for African countries came at a great cost. Gallant men and women shed their blood for our independence. We saw in the initial stages of independence that we the African people enjoyed political freedom while we continued to grapple with economic freedom. Within a few years of independence, we saw the greed of the few leaders exceed the needs of the majority of the people. Political freedoms were quickly taken away. Ruling parties declared countries one party states. This period was characterised by an unprecedented levels of political oppression where the state machinery was used to silence any form of dissent, in many cases, brutally. Ruling parties soon blurred the line between the party and the government, creating a state of affairs where state resources became party resources firmly controlled by the ruling class. Political sycophancy became the order of the day. Zambia was no exception to this unfortunate dark era of political intolerance. Dissenting voices were brutally crashed. The nation was put under a perpetual state of emergency which was used with swift ruthlessness. Zambians against all odds rose against the system and dismantled the one party system in 1990. We saw a serious attempt to reverse this gain during the failed ‘third term project’.

We are now seeing a very worrying trend in Zambia where opposition party political meetings are being disrupted by the highly compromised police formation. Opposition leaders are being dragged before courts of law on flimsy charges. Innocent Zambians gathering to accompany their political leaders are being overrun by vehicles, assassination attempts have become the order of the day. The list of the evidence that shows the reversal of political freedoms are too numerous for one message.

No serious attempt is being made in Africa generally and in Zambia particularly to give the people economic freedom. Life has been reduced to ‘dog eat dog’ to survive. The basic social services such as education, health, water and sanitation are all in free fall. If people cannot receive quality education, cannot access health care and do not have access to clean water and sanitation facilities, what sort of liberation are we talking about? If people cannot criticize the Government openly without fear of victimization, then what kind of liberation are we talking about? Africa has some of the longest serving Presidents, most of whom (if not all) have manipulated constitutions to perpetuate themselves in power. Africa has the indignity of having six of the of top ten world’s longest serving Presidents in the world. The longest serving President the world over, at 37 years and still counting, is from Africa. Such a record is not something to be proud about.

What do we promise as UPND? There can be no liberation if people are not economically liberated. We therefore promise economic liberation by enacting laws that will guarantee citizens participation in the economic activities of the country. We also promise the citizens free quality education. People have to be educated to make informed decisions including choosing the kind of leaders they want. We promise quality health care. We cannot have an educated people, who are economically liberated but not healthy. That will affect productivity negatively. We promise a Zambia that will be food secure. We cannot have a people that are in a good economy, educated, health but hungry. Most importantly, what I, Hakainde Hichilema personally promise to deliver, is freedom of expression and assembly through a people driven constitution. My personal commitment and that of our party UPND to a people driven Constitution is unequivocal. Zambia claims to be liberated from colonialism yet the public order act that was used by the colonialists is still in force. We seem to have changed the DJ but left the same music playing with some of it repeating ad infinitum. Countrymen and women, let us take this opportunity to take a hard look of where we are coming from and where we want to go. Where we want to go will then determine what kind of manpower we need to get us there.

Have a blessed day.

There is need today to reflect on why African countries remain underdeveloped-Constitution Grand Coalition

The Grand Coalition on the People Driven Constitution has said that there was need to seriously reflect on why African countries remain economically and politically underdeveloped.

In a statement made available to the media to mark the African Freedom day, Grand Coalition Chairperson Fr Leonard Chiti said that Africa Freedom Day was a time for Zambians to reflect on how they can collectively work hard to restore the civil and political liberties which successive governments have tried hard to curtail using archaic laws.

Father Chiti further called on all Zambians to unite in the demand for a people driven constitution that will guarantee proper separation of powers, reduced presidential powers, expanded bill of rights and establishment of a democratic legal framework.

Below is the full statement

Press Statement

Grand Coalition on the People Driven Constitution Celebrates Africa Freedom Day.

Lusaka, 24 May 2014: As we remember the liberation of Africa from colonialism, and the energies that our fallen heroes invested in liberating the continent from the evils of political servitude, there is need to seriously reflect on why African countries remain economically and politically underdeveloped.

The Grand Coalition believes Africa Freedom Day is an opportunity for us as Zambians to reflect on the sacrifices of our fathers who fought for the liberation of this country and a number of other Southern African countries. Africa Freedom Day is a time for us to reflect on how we can collectively work hard to restore the civil and political liberties which successive governments have tried hard to curtail using archaic laws.

For Zambians, this day is special because it comes at a time when we are demanding for the enactment of a people driven constitution that could spur economic, political and social freedoms for all citizens, a constitution that will strengthen the Zambian democracy, promote the observance of good governance, human rights and the rule of law.

The spirit of unity of purpose shown by the fallen heroes in the liberation struggle should be a driving force for all Zambians to unite in our demand for a people driven constitution that will guarantee proper separation of powers, reduced presidential powers, expanded bill of rights and establishment of a democratic legal framework.

The enactment of a people-driven constitution will enable all citizens of this country to fully enjoy the freedoms that our fathers fought for.

The Grand Coalition calls on all well-meaning Zambians to promote love, unity and strong desire for the new constitution.

Issued by: Fr Leonard Chiti – Grand Coalition Chairperson.

Today’s message: Stretch to a New Level

bible

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory…
(2 Corinthians 3:18, NKJV)

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria

Today, if you’re not seeing in your life what God promised in your spirit, then you aren’t finished yet! What you see is only temporary. It’s time to keep moving forward. Don’t put your stakes down; don’t settle here. If where you’re living doesn’t match what God put in your spirit, be grateful, keep a good attitude, but keep stretching to a new level. If the medical report doesn’t agree with what God says about you, don’t accept it as the way it’s always going to be. Your attitude should be, “This is just a season that I’m passing through. I’m coming into health, wholeness and victory.”

Maybe it’s even something good. God has blessed you: a family, a job, health. You’ve seen His favor, but you know there are greater levels in front of you. It’s easy to think, “I’m happy. I have no complaints. God has been good to me.” But, I’ve learned that good is the enemy of great. You may be doing good. You’re using your gifts, but deep down you know you have more in you. Don’t let good be an excuse to keep you from God’s best. Stir up your greatness and stretch into a new level!
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father, thank You for taking me from glory to glory. I trust that You are leading me on a journey of faith. I trust that You are bringing to pass every dream and every desire You’ve placed in my heart in Jesus’ name! Amen!

High Court

Acting Chief Justice Lombe Chibesakunda has been called upon to appoint a commission of inquiry or tribunal to determine the circumstances that led President Michael Sata to temper with his immunity by testifying in a court of law.

On Wednesday the 21st of May, President Sata testified in a matter in which he has sued Daily Nation newspaper for defamation.

A senior Blind Citizen Elijah Ngwale said that the action by President Sata to tamper with his immunity as he will now be cross examined by the defense is uncalled for and dangerous for a sitting President.

Mr. Ngwale told Qfm news that what happened on Wednesday the 21st of May was also of unprecedented magnitude and gravity considering the position that Mr. Sata holds of being the country’s Head of State and commander in chief of the armed forces.

He said this is why the Acting Chief Justice should appoint either a commission of inquiry or a tribunal to ascertain the circumstances that the led to such an action by the Head of State. He said in the interim there should be a reshuffle at State House. Mr. Ngwale said this is in order to appoint new office bearers that can wisely advise the President and therefore avoid such a trend of allowing the Head of State to make wrong decisions.

Meanwhile former Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) Executive Director Bishop Paul Mususu also observed that it is unacceptable for President Sata to appear in court against a citizen.

Bishop Mususu said he finds it shocking that President Sata personally appeared in the High Court to testify in case in which he sued the Daily Nation Newspaper and its proprietor Richard Sakala.

He has said that it would have been better for President Sata to allow for his immunity to be waived before going to court to testify against the newspaper.

Bishop Mususu noted that the action by the Head of State has lead to people wondering what sort of advisers the president has.
