PRESIDENT Michael Sata has urged the electorate in Mkaika Constituency in Katete to vote for the ruling party candidate, David Phiri, so as to ensure smooth implementation of various developmental projects.

Mr Sata who held two public rallies in Mkaika yesterday told hundreds of residents ahead of voting on Thursday this week that Government would accelerate development when working with a Member of Parliament (MP) from the ruling party.

Mr Sata who was drumming up support for Mr Phiri said opposition MPs would fail to help Government deliver hence it would be easier to work with the ruling party candidate.

Speaking at Chitende and Omelo Mumba grounds, he said development had continued to lag behind in Mkaika because, the electorate had chosen to work with the opposition, who failed to deliver once voted as MPs.

“I have brought Mr Phiri here and I want to work with him to accelerate development in this area, so it is entirely up to you the voters to lag behind or you give me a person I can work with to development this area,” he said.

He said the PF was geared to bring development to the nation and wanted to work with MPs that would help it achieve its goals and vision for the country.

He said the MMD under its leader Nevers Mumba had failed to effectively represent the people in its constituencies. He charged that Dr Mumba had issues with the church and had continued to mislead his members.

“That is why I urge you to vote for a ruling party candidate so that we can work together. Look at these children here, they did not choose to continue living under poor conditions, so let us work together so that we can improve the welfare of our children and that of the country,” he said.

He thanked the people for the high turnout and urged them that the ruling party would not disappoint them in terms of fostering development.

He said Katete like other places needed improved health, education and road infrastructure and pledged to continue on the right footing that the PF had continued to take.

Mr Sata said the PF needed to establish its presence in Eastern Province, saying currently there was only one MP, Joseph Lungu of Msanzala Constituency.

And Mufumbwe MP, Stephen Masumba said he resigned from the MMD because it had failed the people and that working with President Sata had proved beneficial in terms of driving development.

“We need you people of Mkaika to vote for Mr Phiri so that we can develop together. He left the MMD like I did, because he realised that there was nothing in that party, they failed you for 20 years and what is it that they can do for you that they did not do then?

President Sata cares for you and he will do as he promises,” Mr Masumba said.

The President was accompanied by Commerce Trade and Industry Minister, Emmanuel Chenda, Education, Science, Vocational and Early Education Minister, John Phiri, Home Affairs Minister Edgar Lungu and party officials.

The MMD is fielding, Peter Phiri to contest the Mkaika seat.

MMD president Dr. Nevers Mumba has described as childish remarks by vice president Guy Scott that the MMD is a dead party.

Dr Mumba said that Zambia should not take such statements seriously.

Dr. Mumba told Qfm News that he is disappointed with some utterances some senior Patriotic Front members have continued to make against the MMD.

He stressed that Dr. Scott should concentrate on helping the Patriotic Front administration deliver developmental projects to the Zambian people instead of talking about the MMD.

He said that the MMD is still a strong party and that more Zambians now believe that the party did its best than what the PF has done since coming to power.

Mr. Mumba said that the people of Mkaika are ready to vote for the MMD in this Thursday’s by-election and that nothing will stop them from doing so.

Vice-President Guy Scott during his campaign trail in Mkaika described the MMD as a ‘dead party’ whose performance in the poll is expected to be anything but dismal.

The vice-president also beseeched the people of Mkaika to come to terms with the reality that former President Rupiah Banda is “history” and shall never return into office to help.

Mayuka’s Israel based FIFA agent Nir Karin confirmed the deal on Monday.

The striker has failed to command a place in the Southampton starting eleven after joining the Saints a year ago from Swiss side Young Boys.

“Emmanuel Mayuka has signed a 1 year contract with FC Sochaux,” Karim revealed.

“FC Southampton have agreed a 1 year loan under an undisclosed fee. In end of this 1 year Mayuka will return automatic to FC Southampton,” he said.

Karim said Mayuka turned down offers from Scottish giants Celtic in preference to the French side.

Mkushi targets increased literacy level by 2014

2

Mkushi District Education Board Secretariat (DEBS) has targeted to achieve considerable increase of Literacy levels as part of projections for the year 2014.

ZANIS reports that Mkushi District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) Maybin Luulu disclosed this in an interview, today.

Mr. Luulu said that efforts were being made to achieve at least 40% Literacy rate before the end of 2013.

He said that the current Literacy rate was generally low, adding that this pattern had been found to be uniform for both urban and rural parts of Mkushi.

He cited a 2012 to 2013 Baseline Survey that had been compiled by Mkushi DEBS, explaining that Literacy rate stood at 28% amongst Grade ones and 31 percent amongst Grade 2 Pupils.

He said that the Baseline showed that Grade 3 Literacy rate was at 33 percent whilst the Grade 4 rate was 31 percent .

Mr. Luulu said that in view of these statistics, concerted efforts were being made to raise the average Literacy rate amongst Grades one and 2 pupils, to 50% before 2015.

He said that in the same vein, his office would not relent in striving to achieve 60% average Literacy rate amongst Grades 3 and 4 Pupils next year.

He said that the DEBS office had been advising and encouraging Teachers to apply innovative teaching methods in the quest to improve the general rate of Literacy in the District.

Mr. Luulu observed that the current rate of Literacy amongst school going pupils in the District, was worrisome and generally below par.

He said that there was need for Teachers in the District to devote efforts towards achieving the objective of raising the current Literacy rate to acceptable level.

Recently, Central Province Education Officer (PEO) Enita Hamatumbika called on the Mkushi’s Teachers fraternity to devote more efforts towards improving the average Literacy rate in this District.

Mrs. Hamatumbika had stated this during her visit to the District, where she tasked Female Teachers to take the leading role in raising he Literacy levels in schools as well as in the communities.

President Michael Sata this evening viewed the body of late Cardinal Merdardo Mazombwe at the cathedral of the child Jesus.

The president who arrived at the Cathedral of the child Jesus was accompanied by Commerce Minister Emmanuel Chenda and Education Minister John Phiri.

Immediately after viewing the body, Mr. Sata went to sign the book of condolences at 17:35 hrs.

In his message of condolences the president said he was mourning Cardinal Medardo Mazombwe and that may his soul rest in peace.

The late Cardinal retired archbishop of Lusaka and a longtime campaigner for foreign-debt reduction, died on Thursday last week. He was 81.

In a telegram to the people of the Archdiocese of Lusaka, Pope Francis praised the late cardinal’s “unfailing commitment to the spread of the Gospel in Africa and his tireless efforts on behalf of the poor.”

A statement from the archdiocese said, “Cardinal Mazombwe’s optimism and courage in the face of cancer inspired many that visited him in the last 12 months. Even as he grew weak, Cardinal Mazombwe never gave up his passion for the affairs of the church and the nation.”

Pope Benedict XVI had named him to the College of Cardinals in 2010, four years after the archbishop retired as head of the archdiocese.

The Zambian prelate rose to international prominence in the late 1990s as a vocal advocate for the world’s poor countries, particularly those unable to provide for their citizens because they were making massive payments on debt to First World banks

PF suspends Lundazi Constituency chairperson

8

The Lundazi District Patriotic Front Committee has suspended Chairperson for Lundazi Central Constituency, Yona Ng’andu, with immediate effect.

Mr Ng’andu has been benched for gross indiscipline in accordance with Article 17 of the Party’s constitution.

This is according to the suspension letter written and signed by PF Lundazi District chairperson, Manfred Banda, dated 8th August 2013.

Mr Banda accused Mr Ng’andu of being arrogant, failing to attend constituency meetings organized by the district committee and blocking PF members wishing to attend district meetings.Mr Banda further disclosed Mr Ng’andu, being the constituency chairperson, on July 13, 2013, threatened to suspend any constituency member wishing to attend district meetings.

He said the District Committee formally charged and wrote Mr Ng’andu a letter on July 13 and gave him a period of 14 days to exculpate himself but, instead, Ng’andu chose to remain silent, a sign of guilt.

But when contacted for a comment, Mr Ng’andu said he does not recognize the suspension written by the District Committee led by Manfred Banda, alleging that the current District Committee was divided and marred with total confusion.
Meanwhile the District Committee has since appointed Lundazi Central Constituency Vice Chairperson, Maureen Zimba Chiwama, to act as chairperson for the constituency.

Police challenged to explain PF cadres’ State house march

14

The Southern African Center for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) has challenged the Zambia Police service to clearly state the procedure Patriotic Front youths used to march to State house over the weekend.

SACCORD Executive Director Boniface Cheembe has told Qfm News that there is need for the police to tell the nation whether the PF youths were granted permission to match to State house.

Mr. Cheembe noted that many are the times when other public processions of a similar nature by the opposition have been stopped by Police even after being given notification in good time.

Mr. Cheembe said it will only be fair for the police to work accordingly and uphold professionalism to avoid being accused of being selective in the application of the Public Order Act.

And Mr Cheembe said as much as SACCORD welcomes the move by police to investigate those behind weekend’s fracas in which rival Patriotic Front cadres clashed, police should always be vigilant and alert of such happenings to protect innocent citizens from being caught up.

Mr. Cheembe has since appealed to the Zambia police service to ensure that they quickly complete investigations into the matter and ensure that the culprits are brought to book.

National Movement for Progress (NMP) President Ngandu Magande says he is happy with the infighting that has rocked the ruling Patriotic Front.

Mr. Magande says the differences within the ruling party will make it easy for the opposition to take over the running of government.

He adds that the PF should not waste time on quarreling but instead concentrate on delivering to the nation the promises they made prior to the 2011 elections.

He says the ruling party should not shift the nation’s attention to the infighting taking place in the party from development issues.

Mr. Magande reminds the Patriotic Front that the Zambian people are watching and that there will come a time when they will react.

Albidon reduces salaries on new contracts employees by 30 %

9

Albidon Zambia Limited in Mazabuka has awarded new contracts to its employees with a salary deduction of 30 per cent across the board.

Meanwhile, the 60 workers at the company, who were scheduled to sign the new contracts last Friday, have rejected and refused to sign the contracts describing the 30 per cent deduction as too much and unbearable.

Sources within Albidon, a nickel mine owned by Jinchuan of China, disclosed that management at the company which has been placed under care and maintenance, on Friday awarded new contracts to the 6o employees with a 30 per cent salary deduction effective September1, 2013.

The workers, who declined to be named, complained in separate interviews that no employee has since accepted to sign the contracts on grounds that there were no consultations between management and employees.

They disclosed that as employees they would not accept excuses that are being advanced by management that employees at Albidon, should effect deductions on its employees just like its sister company in China due to lack of profit on its businesses.

“We are informed that they were instructions given by management of Jinchuan in China where the headquarters are that we should have our salaries deducted by 30 per cent just like the case is with our counterparts in China on grounds that the company is not recording good profits,” revealed the sources.

The workers further disclosed that according to the contracts, management has given a period of seven days in which to allow the workers to sign, saying it is, however, not clear as to what action management would take against those that refuse.

Meanwhile, labour experts have opposed to the action taken by Albidon to reduce salaries by because no mutual agreements were reached between the employer and the employee.

The experts disclosed that in a normal situation, both the employer and the employee needed to engage in consultations in order to agree on what percentage unlike a situation where the employer just imposes the changes.

Efforts to get a comment from management staff this morning proved futile as they were reported to be in a meeting.

SACCORD congratulates political parties for peacefull campaigns

11

The Southern African Center for the Constructive Resolution (SACCORD) has congratulated the four political parties taking part in the Mkaika parliamentary by-election for conducting their campaigns in a peaceful manner.

The political parties taking part in the September 5 polls are the ruling PF, the MMD, NAREP and UNIP.

SACCORD Executive Director Boniface Cheembe has disclosed to Qfm in an interview that his organization which already has monitors in the area, has not received any serious reports of violence or the abrogation of the Electoral Code of Conduct.

Mr. Cheembe has urged the four political parties to continue with their tolerance towards each other and the adhering to the Electoral law as they campaign for the poll which is due in two days.

Mr. Cheembe has also urged electorates to come out in numbers to vote on the polling day.

RB is history and shall never return into office, Guy Scott tells Mkaika voters

40
Dr Guy Scott
Dr Guy Scott

With 72 hours to go before the Mkaika by-election takes place, vice-President Guy Scott, has described the MMD as a ‘dead party’ whose performance in the poll is expected to be anything but dismal.

The vice-president also beseeched people of Mkaika to come to terms with the reality that former President Rupiah Banda is “history” and shall never return into office to help them so that they can start looking forward and back the ruling party under President Sata.

Dr. Scott further expressed confidence that the Patriotic Front (PF) candidate David Phiri will win Thursday’s poll with ease so that he can start contributing to the development of the constituency under the PF government.

He commended Mr Phiri, the PF candidate, as a courageous man who resigned from the MMD to join the ruling party so that his constituency can be developed based on the ruling party’s track record of delivery.

He said the track record includes road construction country-wide and other projects such as universities and 650 health posts country-wide being constructed at a cost of about US$48 million.

“Mr Phiri is a courageous man, loves the people in Mkaika and has joined a party committed to develop the nation. We have put up development projects that will be seen soon and our works will speak for us in the 2016 campaigns,” Dr Scott said.
He was speaking when he addressed a rally at Gaven Primary School in Mkaika Constituency to drum up support for Mr Phiri yesterday.

Dr Scott said Mr Phiri is hard working and that he has brought the social scheme fund for the people from 50 years of age and above in Katete.

He assured the people of Katete of more development if they vote for Mr Phiri.

Dr Scott said the road leading to Msoro village from Katete will be tarred soon and that a number of schools and health posts will be built.

And Dr Scott has described the MMD as a finished party which the people of Katete should forget about.

Dr Scott said the MMD is being led by failures, whose political fortunes have since dwindled and faded with time as people figure them out for what they are. Deputy Minister of Works and Supply Mwimba Malama appealed to the people of Mkaika to give the PF an MP it can work with to develop their area.

Mr Malama, who is Mfuwe MP said, “You have seen what we have started in less than two years we have been in power. So many projects are underway and the country will be linked soon for easy movement of people and transportation of goods.”

And Mr Phiri implored the voters in Mkaika to vote for him so that he can continue with his development agenda.

He said since the PF came into power it has been releasing money for many development projects such as roads and that many parts of Mkaika are now electrified.

Mr Phiri pledged to work tirelessly in developing Mkaika if he is re-elected.

The Mkaika seat felt vacant when Mr Phiri resigned to join the PF.

Other candidates standing in Mkaika are MMD’s Peter Phiri and Nigel Mpakhateni of NAREP.
