The ruling Patriotic Front has been urged to put its house in order if they are to return the confidence and respect of the Zambian people.

Political analyst Dante Saunders said that the infighting in the ruling party is sending a wrong message to the Zambian people.

Mr Saunders said that it is unfortunate that the squabbles in the PF sparked by the endorsement of President Michael Sata’s for 2016 presidential election have continued unabated.

He said that the Zambian people expect the ruling party to deliver on the 2011 campaign promises and not fighting amongst themselves at the expense of development.

Mr. Saunders stated that the Zambian people are already angry with the ruling party for not delivering to expectation during the two years of being in power.

He said that the PF should therefore focus on delivering development to the Zambian people instead of quarreling amongst themselves.

[pullquote]He said M’membe should not cheat himself that he had made President Sata win the last elections saying Zambians did not vote for the President based on what the Post Newspaper published.[/pullquote]

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba has said that Post Newspaper owner Fred M’membe is orchestrating schemes meant to discredit and purge all Patriotic Front (PF) officials who have launched a campaign to endorse Mr Sata as the sole candidate for the 2016 general elections.

Mr Mwamba said that M’membe beleives that he made Sata win the 2011 general elections and that he had embarked on grooming a named senior cabinet minister to take over from the Head of State.

Mwamba has called on the general membership of the PF and the citizenry at large to ignore confusing and hate stories being peddled by the Post Newspaper saying the ruling party would at an opportune time deal with M’membe for scheming against President Sata and fanning acrimony in the party.

He said M’membe should not cheat himself that he had made President Sata win the last elections saying Zambians did not vote for the President based on what the Post Newspaper published.

Mwamba said the party was getting divided because of the selfish motives of the Post newspaper owner who he has described as a man who did not mean well for ruling party and the country.

“As far as we are concerned, no member has been suspended for endorsing President Sata. This man (M’membe) does not mean well for the PF and the country. He is dividing the party but he will not succeed. We shall deal with him at an opportune time for dividing the party” Mwamba said.

Mwamba said M’membe has been using his newspaper to scandalize and discredit party officials supporting the endorsement of President Sata because he was allegedly propping up a named preferred candidate to succeed the Head of State even before the expiry of his first term of office.

Mwamba said the succession debate in the PF that had seen the suspension of some party officials was being used by people who were against President Sata running for the second term.

[pullquote]This man (M’membe) does not mean well for the PF and the country. He is dividing the party but he will not succeed. We shall deal with him at an opportune time for dividing the party” Mwamba said.[/pullquote]

Mwamba has vowed that he would never allow the clique that was allegedly against President Sata to win their battle because Zambians did not vote for Sata on account of what M’membe and the Post published during the run up to the 2011 elections.
He said there was a hidden agenda that the owner of the Post Newspaper was pursuing but that the agenda would not succeed because Zambians had started seeing through what was being peddled.

He explained that it was not the newspaper that would decide who would succeed President Sata when he retires from politics but that Zambians that gave the mandate to PF to govern would decide who would be the heir to the presidency.

Mwamba said the suspension of some PF officials who have been endorsing the candidature of President Sata for the 2016 elections was not only targeted at him (Mwamba) but was also targeting the Head of State so that an impression should be created Sata was not wanted by Zambians.

“The purported suspension of PF officials endorsing President Sata is not only targeted at me but also meant to knock out President Sata from recontesting the presidency in 2016. It is Fred M’membe who is at the heart of schemes of refusing to endorse President Sata because he has a hidden agenda. We know that he is using his newspaper to prop up his candidate and we are aware of his plans.

He will not go anywhere with such schemes even if he believes that he is the one who made Mr Sata to become President,” Mwamba said.

Department of Tourism in normal operations-PS

Government has disputed some media reports suggesting that the Department of tourism in the Ministry of Tourism and Arts has been shut down.

Ministry of Tourism and Arts Permanent Secretary George Zulu said the department will not at any point shut down and will continue functioning normally.

Mr. Zulu accused those spreading such reports of trying to tarnish the image of the ministry of Tourism and Arts.

He explained in an interview that most of the officers had travelled to Livingstone for the UNTWO conference but that they are back and will continue with their normal duties.

Mr. Zulu was reacting to reports that the department of Tourism has been shut down and all the staff sent on forced leave to pave way for the Anti-Corruption Commission to conduct investigations regarding some UNWTO contracts that were dubiously awarded.

The Patriotic Front in Kasama District has advised the media to stop portraying people endorsing President Michael Sata’s candidature in the 2016 presidential election as bad.

Reacting to today’s POST story in which some PF members are calling for disciplining of Defence Minister, Geoffrey Mwamba for championing the endorsement campaign for President Michael Sata, PF District Chairman, Caleb Monta, said the calls were baseless and unfortunate.

He claimed that the ‘false’ dream by some named PF senior party members to succeed President Sata’s have been thwarted by Mr Mwamba’s endorsement campaign for President Sata as the preferred presidential candidate for the ruling party in the 2016 general elections.

Mr Monta said as a result, some media houses have specialized in attacking Mr Mwamba, who is also Kasama Central Member of Parliament, for openly supporting President Sata as the preferred presidential candidate for the ruling party in the 2016 general elections.

He alleged that only some disgruntled senior party members were opposed to the endorsement of President Sata.
Mr Monta observed that the negative reports being carried by the POST against Mr Mwamba will not erode his popularity in the ruling party.

He said the party members in Kasama Central Constituency were in full support of their area MP in quest to campaign for President Sata.

Mr Monta has accused the PF Provincial Executive Committee of turning into a ‘rebel’ group by working against the party.
The District Chairman has since appealed to President Sata to quickly intervene and dissolve the committee before it does more harm to the ruling party.

And Kasama District Information and Publicity, Jackson Simutenda, has called for the immediate suspension of party provincial youth chairman, Ronald Mulenga, for his utterances that were likely to bring the name of ruling party into ridicule.

He said PF members have every right to endorse President Sata as the party’s sole presidential candidate in the 2016 tripartite elections.

Meanwhile, CHINSALI District Commissioner (DC) Evelyn Kangwa says those not supporting the endorsement of President Michael Sata as a sole candidate for 2016 elections are not full Patriotic Front ( PF) members.

(ZANIS reports from Chinsali District that the District Commissioner said this in an interview at her office
Chinsali today .

Ms. Kangwa said that there is nothing wrong in endorsing President Sata for 2016 elections.

Ms. Kangwa has also warned those attacking Defence Minister Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba (GBM) for endorsing President Sata for 2016 elections to stop adding that the campaign seemingly launched by the Defence minister has the blessings of the party at grass root level.

Ms. Kangwa said what Mr. Mwamba is saying is the feeling of the people at grass root level as they are the ones who supported President Sata during the 2011 tripartite elections.

“This is the feeling of the people at grassroots level that President Sata should be endorsed as PF party sole presidential candidate in the 2016 elections.

“ GBM is just being used as a conduit. The campaign itself is from the people and no one can absorb the feelings of the people, “said Ms. Kangwa.

Ms. Kangwa ,who is also former District Chairperson for PF in Chinsali, said President Sata has proved that he is a man worth entrusting with the affairs of the nation and this is why people in the party are endorsing him for presidency in 2016.

“ The local PF leadership here in Chinsali is very much behind the campaign raised by GBM for President Michael Chilufya Sata to be adopted as the sole candidate for the position, “ she said.

Ms. Kangwa added that President Sata is committed to deliver on the campaign promises made during the run up to the September 18th, 2011 tripartite elections and that he has already started delivering on the promises made.

The DC charged that those attacking Mr. Mwamba for endorsing President Sata should come out in the open and state where they belong.

She added that whether he is endorsed or not the Republican President is still eligible to go for his second term .

“ Therefore, those opposing the endorsement do not know what they are doing and should come out in the open and tell the nation their interests, ‘ she said.

The endorsement of President Sata as a sole presidential candidate for 2016 elections under the PF has sparked a lot of debate across the country with some party members allegedly being suspended for supporting the endorsement while other senior party members have publicly exchanged bitter words over the same endorsement.

Bank of Zambia maintains 9.75% policy rate

1

The Bank of Zambia (BoZ) has maintained its policy rate at 9.75 percent for the month of September 2013.

BoZ Head of Public Relations, Kanguya Mayondi, said the Monitory Policy Committee of the Central Bank decided to maintain the policy rate for September at its August 2013 meeting.

Mr Mayondi said the committee noted the continued presence of inflationary pressures largely associated with the anticipated wage increase for the public sector effective September, 2013.

He said this will be in addition to pressures that may arise from the possible increase in the price of some food items due to continued high demand in the region.

Mr Mayondi said the committee, however, observed that inflationary pressures may moderate in the coming month on account of the recent stability in the exchange rate of the Kwacha.

He said the committee further noted the continued weak global economic growth, which he said may lead to lower external demand for export commodities.

He said the committee also noted the slight increase in the price of copper on the back of an improvement in Chinese import demand in recent weeks.

Mr Mayondi said the committee weighed the inflationary risks and has resolved that monetary policy should continue to be relatively tight during the policy-relevant period in order to moderate inflationary pressures.

Mr Mayondi said the next meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee to review the Bank of Zambia Policy Rate will be held at the end of September, 2013.

Shamenda is insulting civil servants over pension reforms-HH

UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema

Opposition UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema says Labour Minister Fackson Shamenda is insulting civil servants after he claimed that the planned pension reforms will help them to better manage their retirement money.

Mr. Hichilema charged that Mr. Shamenda is not the best person to offer advice to civil servants on how to use their retirement money.

“I’m now talking about education qualifications here, I just feel Shamenda should keep his advice and not insult civil servants,” he said.

Mr. Hichilema said Mr. Shamenda’s statement’s over the proposed pension reforms shows a lot of arrogance on the part of the PF.

“Shamenda is basically insulting the intelligence of Zambians and the collective intelligence of all Zambians. He was arrogant enough to tell civil servants that they don’t know how to use their retirement money. Who tells him that it’s his job to worry about how a civil servant uses his retirement benefit?”

He said the PF government is rushing the pension reforms because they want to run away from their responsibility of paying retirement benefits.

“They have bust the budget and are looking at ways of saving up some money and they now want to squeeze civil servants.”

Mr. Hichilema said again the PF government has cheated civil servants.

“They told civil servants that they will be receiving their pension money within 90 days after retiring but they now want to scrap off the lump sum package, this is the Don’t Kubeba that civil servants voted for,” he said.

Mr. Hichilema has demanded that government halts any plans of reforming the pay system for pensioners saying the planned reforms are unconstitutional.

“Article 124 as amended in 1996 on the preservation of the pensioners accrued rights should be respected, the constitution does not allow Shamenda and the PF to do what they are planning to do to the pension system because there have not been any constitutional amendments.”

The UPND leader has since advised the labour movement to reject any policy reforms that will impact negatively on their members.

President Michael Sata has learnt with profound sorrow and regret, the passing of Medardo Cardinal Joseph Mazombwe in Lusaka’s University Teaching Hospital (UTH) on Thursday, August 29, 2013.

President Sata described the death of the Archbishop Emeritus of Lusaka Archdiocese and Zambia’s first indigenous Cardinal, as a huge blow to the country and the Church.

“I wish to express my deepest sympathy to the entire Catholic Archdiocese of Lusaka, the Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC), his family and all those who knew and venerated His Eminence Medardo Cardinal Joseph Mazombwe both home and abroad,” the Head of State said.

“I recall the late Cardinal as a courageous and enthusiastic revered cleric for many years, in particular as a young priest in the 1960s, as Bishop of Chipata Diocese in the 1970s and finally as the Archbishop of Lusaka until his retirement in 2006. Most visible among some of his numerous pastoral initiatives, is the magnificent Cathedral of the Child Jesus (Pope Square) in Lusaka.”

The President said the late Cardinal Mazombwe’s passion and commitment to the nation and the poor is equally worth of praise.

“In the months leading to the year 2000, Cardinal Mazombwe, as Archbishop of Lusaka then, was a fiery crusader for the cancellation of Zambia’s international debt, in the Jubilee 2000 movement,” President Sata said.

“Clearly, all those who had contact with this great cleric can testify that his priestly zeal, authority and fidelity to the Gospel was appreciated by multitudes. I pray to the Almighty God to grant all Catholic faithful and the entire nation comfort and strength as we go through this tragic period.”

Cardinal Mazombwe held several senior positions in the local and regional Church, such as Zambia Episcopal President (1972 – 1975; 1988 – 1990 and 1999 – 2002); and as Chairman of the regional conferences of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (A.M.E.C.E.A.) (1979 – 1986).

First Lady Christine Kaseba, has implored Zambians to use the euphoria the just-ended 2013 20thSession of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has created to market the country’s tourism potential.

Speaking after being conferred as an honorary ambassador of tourism for Zambia, Dr Kaseba said the legacy that the just-end conference left should be a springboard for citizens to effectively market the country’s tourism potential to the outside world.

The First Lady noted that Zambia has a number of waterfalls dotted around the country and a variety of wildlife species that the country can benefit from if well marketed.

Dr Kaseba told heads of delegations and senior government officials that attended the function dubbed “The First Lady’ Health Gala Dinner-Health for Improved Tourism” under the theme: “A Healthy Nation is a Wealthy Nation” held at the Zambia Air Force (ZAF) Banquet Hall in Livingstone last night.

Dr Kaseba advised old people to promote the balance of nature and cultural biodiversity so that it can be preserved for future generations.

Earlier, UNWTO Secretary General, Taleb Rifai, said Zambians should be proud for successfully co-hosting an event that has put the country on the world market.

Dr Rifai commended the Zambian government for taking a step on promoting health tourism in line with the World Health Organisation (WHO) which has since appointed goodwill health ambassadors to promote the cause.

Meanwhile, Tourism and Arts Minister, Sylvia Masebo, said tourism and health go together, hence the launch of the promotion of health tourism in the country aimed at maintaining cleanliness in tourist spots.

Ms Masebo noted that the successful co-hosting of the event has given Zambians the impetus to consolidate and enhance cleanliness and healthy campaign across the country.

She said the event has repositioned Zambia as a favouarble destination for tourists, hence the need to continue marketing the sector.

In attendance was Republican Vice President’s wife, Charlotte, who led Ministers’ spouses, Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet, Ambassador Peter Kasanda, who lead Permanent Secretaries and some District Commissioners.

Also in attendance was Defence Minister, Geoffrey Mwamba and his Commerce, Trade and Industry counterpart, Emmanuel Chenda.

Labour and Social Security Minister Fackson Shamenda has advised UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema to stop alarming the nation on issues he does not understand.

Responding to Mr. Hichilema statement that the move by government to reform the public service pension scheme is a ploy not to pay retirees, Mr. Shamenda said that Mr. Hichilema should keep quiet than mislead the nation.

He explained that governments world over are reforming their public pension schemes in a bid to give better conditions to the majority retirees who for many years fail to get their retirement package on time.

Mr. Shamenda said that government is not in support of politicians that want to alarm the nation on simple issues.

He said that the Patriotic Front government is committed to ensuring that Zambians have their retirement dues in a quick way than waiting for years to get their gratuities.

Mr Shamenda has since appealed to Mr. Hichilema to seek audience with him if he is to understand the move by government to reform the public service pension scheme

The Millers Association of Zambia (MAZ) has accused mealie meal traders of exploiting consumers by selling the country’s stable food above the recommended retail price.

Mr Sakala has told Qfm News in an interview that it is unfortunate that mealie meal traders have continued to exploit consumers with high prices.

He says traders should exercise morality in their dealings because millers are still selling their Mealie meal at a low cost.

Mr Sakala says the actual recommended price should be Sixty five kwacha per 25kg bag of breakfast and sixty kwacha for roller meal.

He adds that it is immoral for traders to sale Mealie Meal above the recommended retail price.
