Kalaba had just returned to training after being given the all clear following a calf injury he sustained at his DR Congo club.

Newly created subsidiary of Zambeef to create 2000 jobs in Mpika

8

ZAMPALM, a newly created subsidiary of Zambeef Products located in Mpika district of Muchinga Province will create 2,000 new jobs next year as the company starts harvesting fruits and processing palm oil.

This came to light over the weekend when Muchinga Minister Colonel Gerry Chanda visited the project located in Chinama chiefdom of Chief Kopa of the Bisa people on the out skirts of Mpika.

The company has invested about KR 7.5 million on its palm oil plantation in Mpika from part of its US$ 41 million total investment for the palm oil production which will include the setting up of a cracker to process the palm oil.

ZAMPALM Plantation Manager Trusted Mwiinga told the minister that the project was on course.

Mr. Mwiinga said all things being equal his company will create about 2,000 new jobs during harvest and processing of the palm oil next year in 2014 or early 2015.

Mr. Mwiinga said a processing industry will be set up at the Mpika ZAMPALM plantation to process the palm oil adding that it is during this time that more jobs will be created.

He said that the number of jobs required is more than the number of people in the area saying at some point there will be need to get more people to work on the plant from outside the district.

And Muchinga minister Colonel Gerry Chanda said he was impressed with what he had seen on the 20,000 hectare farm.

Colonel Chanda said the government was happy with the huge investment from Zambeef adding that it stands ready to support such initiatives that will in the long run transform the lives of the local people.

The provincial minister who visited both the nursery and the main plantation said had no doubt that such a project will transform the lives of the local people in particular as well as contributing to the economic status of the province as a whole.

He has since appealed to the general work force at the plantation to put in their best and ensure that the company realizes full benefits that will also be passed on to them in form of salaries and good conditions of service.

Colonel Chanda said the Government expects the workers at the ZAMPALM plantation to work hard because he has faith in the company that it will also take care of its workers going by the huge investment that has been put in.

Earlier, Chief Kopa of the Bisa people of Chinama chiefdom said people in the area have already started getting the benefits from the ZAMPALM project.

Chief Kopa said most of the people in the area were now able to send their children to school from what they are earning at ZAMPALM.

The Mpika ZALMPALM plantation which was set up in 2008 will be processing 100,000 tonnes of palm oil per annum when fully
operational.

PFnot responsible for the defections of the opposition MPs to the ruling party-Kapeya

INFORMATION Deputy Minister, Mwansa Kapeya(L)
INFORMATION Deputy Minister, Mwansa Kapeya(L)

Mpika Central Member of Parliament Mwansa Kapeya says the ruling Patriotic Front is not responsible for the defections of the opposition MPs to the ruling party.

Mr Kapeya said the opposition political parties are the cause of by election because they have kept on expelling their members or force their members to resign, an action that eventually result into by elections.

Speaking on Friday evening when he featured on Mpika FM community radio in Mpika, Mr Kapeya dismissed allegations that the ruling party has been enticing opposition MPs to leave their party and join the ruling PF.

Mr Kapeya who is also Information and Broadcasting Services Deputy Minister wondered why the opposition political parties were accusing his party of creating elections when it was in fact themselves who were expelling their members.

He said the ruling party has no role in creating by election but merely participated in an already created by election which he said was provided for in the country’s constitution.

He noted that some opposition political parties have expelled their members who have agreed to work with government to serve their people better which he said was unfair.

He said the ruling PF has attracted members from other parties due to its good policies and programmes it is implementing to uplift the lives of people especially those in rural areas.

He said since coming into power, the PF has embarked on various programmes such as the construction of roads under the Link Zambia 8000 and Pave Zambia 2000 which he said has not only opened the country but also created employment for local people.

He said his government has also constructed a number of health centres, schools, houses for civil servants and employed all trained teachers who were left unemployed by the previous government.

He explained that he PF has not departed from its principle of creating more job and putting more money in the pockets of people as it is currently shifting resources from sectors where few rich benefited in order to allow poor rural dweller to benefit as well.

When asked whether the removal of subsidies on some commodities was not going to make life harder for the poor people as goods and services would all be expensive, Mr Kapeya said the money removed from subsidies will directly benefit rural people as they will be employed in the construction of roads and other pieces of infrastructure and further benefit them as the development which will be implemented in their areas will permanently be theirs.

He noted that the PF gained power on the promise that it will make life better for the poor Zambians hence the decision to remove subsidies on commodities that were only benefiting the already rich people who have the capacity to acquire such services even without government’s help.

Various callers came through to commend government for its move to remove subsidies and channel money to rural development.

Lundazi farmers illegally ‘exporting’ maize to Malawi

6

Farmers in Lundazi district are reported to be smuggling maize and other crops to Malawi’s markets that are strategically established along the Zambia-Malawi international borders.

ZANIS in Lundazi reports that Chimaliro Ward Councillor, John Kamanga, disclosed this during the Agricultural and Commercial Show in senior Chief Mwase’s are whose theme was ‘’BUSINESS IN A CHANGING ENVIRONMENT’’ attended by Lundazi District Commissioner, Janet Mvula, held over the
weekend.

Councillor Kamanga said several farmers and vendors from Zambia ferry maize, soya beans, groundnuts and other farm produce in trucks, oxcarts and on bicycles to the markets commonly known as “Bwandila” dotted along the Zambia-Malawi boarders, especially on Thursdays.

He said although a 50kg bag of maize fetches KR60 in that country as compared to KR65 in Zambia, the delay by the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to open the marketing season, reduced number of satellites depots, delayed payment of dues among others were reasons for selling the maize and other crops in Malawi.

The councillor said farmers further claimed that the FRA only buys maize from farmers leaving out other crops such as groundnuts, soya beans, sunflower and other cash crops and wondered where the farmers would sell other crops.

And efforts to a get comment from Lundazi District Agricultural Coordinator, Philemon Lungu, failed as he was reported to be attending Provincial Planning and Review meeting.

RB’s passport application should be made to the High Court, rules Magistrate

43
Former President Rupiah Banda
Former President Rupiah Banda

Chief resident magistrate Joshua Banda has this afternoon dismissed an application by former President Rupiah Banda’s lawyers to have his passport released, stating that the application was wrongly before the subordinate court.

Delivering ruling on the application, Magistrate Banda ruled that the application was supposed to be made before the High court.

Magistrate Banda made the ruling the ruling after analyzing submissions from the state and the defence team.

Mr Banda said the application to vary the accused persons’ police bond was before a wrong court saying even though he had inheritance power, it should not override the statutory provisions and that the application was before a wrong court.

“The magistrate only has powers to extend the police bond and not to make any variations, and on the accusations of people making running comments, let all those including the accused stop making any running comments over the cases before court,” he said.

Magistrate Banda has also warned the public media and state advocates to desist from making commentary on the case of the former president which is still in court.

And in another court where the former president is charged with concealing of gratification under the Anti Corruption Act, Principal Resident Magistrate Obsitter Musukwa ruled that the former president should apply for the release of his passport through the High court.

Magistrate Musukwa told the court that only the high court is empowered to vary the jurisdiction.

And speaking to journalists immediately after the ruling defence lawyer Sakwiba Sikota said the next move will be made known after talking to their client.

President Banda is scheduled to travel to South Africa on the special invitation by Boston University by midday tomorrow.

Kaluba takes positives from Shepolopolo loss to Zimbabwe

Zambia Women assistant coach Kaluba Kangwa says the team tried its best despite losing 3-1 to Zimbabwe in an international friendly played at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka on Sunday.

Kangwa told fazfootball.com that the purpose of the match was to assess new players who had been incorporated from the under 17 squad that won gold at the Zone 6 games in December.

“It was a good game; as you know we are in the process of constituting a new team and the girls did their best and we are heading in the right direction,” said Kangwa.

“The majority of the players we used were from the under 17 team and we had an opportunity to assess them ahead of qualifiers for the Womens Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted in Namibia next year.”

Mary Mwakapila scored the consolation goal for Zambia.

HH challenges Sata to a live TV debate on subsidies

Hakainde Hichilema

UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has challenged President Michael Sata to feature on a live television debate with him on the merits and demerits of subsidies on essential commodities.

Mr. Hichilema said a debate with President Sata would help settle the debate on the removal of subsidies.
“I want him to face me on national TV and radio and we debate this issue conclusively. They cannot continue cheating people that this subsidy removal was meant to benefit the poor people. This is part of the lies,” Mr. Hichilema said.

He told a media briefing in Lusaka today that the UPND leadership is ready to debate the issue with other PF leaders.

“We want Mr. Kabimba to square it off with Mr. Kapita or with Dr. Banda here and see who will convince the Zambians,” Mr. Hichilema said.

He observed that the Ministers and their Deputies who have been dispatched across the country to explain the issue of subsidies are gobbling millions of Kwacha.

Mr. Hichilema maintained that subsidies are a permanent fixture of any economy world over.

“Subsidies are a necessary cost. They help repair the distortions that are inherent in any economy. There are always people that cannot just be employed due to factors such as disabilities and those people need to be helped through subsidies.”

He added, “I lived in the UK myself, I worked and studied in Birmingham and London and the poor people there get unemployment benefits. These things are everywhere.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Hichilema has confirmed that nine UPND members died in a road traffic accident at Kavaramanja near Feira last evening.

He said the party is touched by the loss of lives and extended condolences to the families of the dead members.

The UPND press briefing also observed a meeting of silence in honour of the deceased.

U.S Based rapper Chanda Mbao releases new mixtape

chanda mbao

Rapper Chanda Mbao released his new mixtape on 31st May . He had this to say

“As many of you know, today is my birthday. It’s a big day that comes once a year with a series of existential reflections. Fitting that one of the reflections takes me back to the beautiful piece of prose that rested on my mother’s living room wall when I was a child. It was called Desiderata.

Desiderata is Latin for ‘things desired’ and, like you, I’m in the pursuit of exactly that: the things I desire. It’s a pursuit that can sometimes seem aimless and even empty but we all have the power to call upon the  passion within us to set us back on course.

My passion happens to be music and so, on this birthday, I would like to share my passion with you, in the form of my first mixtape. Like the piece on my mum’s wall, it is called Desiderata and I hope you enjoy it.

Peace,”

Getting opposition MPs meant to make it easy for the government to pass legislation-Scott

17
Vice President Guy Scott
Vice President Guy Scott

Republican Vice President Guy Scott has disclosed that the decision to co-opt opposition Members of parliament into government by President Michael Sata is meant to make it easy for the government to pass legislation in Parliament.

Dr Scott explains that in view of the hang parliament in which no political party emerged with an absolute majority following the 2011 general elections, it was going to be difficult for the PF government to pass legislation.

He says it for this reason that President Michael Sata decided to co-opt some opposition members of parliament to his government as deputy ministers for them to vote with the ruling party in parliament.

The Vice President has further stated that the opposition parties expelling their members of parliament for accepting ministerial positions in the PF government should be the ones to blame for causing by-elections.

He says UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema knows very well that by expelling Sinazongwe Member of Parliament Richwell Siamunene, there will be a by-election with 90 days as stipulated by the republican constitution.

Dr Scott also conceded that the by-elections are a drain on state confers by that there is nothing the PF government can do except change the republican constitution.

And Dr Scott says government is very much willing to review the Public Order Act.

He however says this will not be done while the Act is subject to judicial review proceedings before the courts of law.

The Law Association of Zambia has challenged the constitutionality of the Public Order Act in its current form in the High Court.

Dr Scott was speaking on Muvi TV’s the Assignment last evening.

18 000 people in Kilwa face hunger

9

About 18,000 people at Kilwa Island on Lake Mweru in Nchelenge district are facing severe hunger.

Acting Nchelenge District Commissioner Gift Hajongola says people on the Island are affected by hunger caused by crop failure due to a drought.

Mr.Hajongola confirmed the development this morning when Luapula Province Minister Benson Kapaya paid a courtesy call on him at his office.

The acting DC said there is urgent need for relief food for the islanders as they are faced with a serious hunger situation.

Mr. Hajongola said the situation has been made worse by the fact that the recent skirmishes in the neighboruring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) brought refugees to the area who contributed to the depletion of food.

He said the other factor that has contributed to the hunger situation is the lack of an alternative source of food on the island.

And General Kapaya said Government is concerned with the development at the Island and is working round the clock to ensure that relief food is provided for the people of Kilwa.

General Kapaya said the geographical location of the Island made it difficult for the residents to access the main land to get food.

The Provincial Minister said Government has through the Disaster Management and Mitigating Unit (DMMU) in the Office of the Vice President has already done an assessment of the required relief food.Kilwa Island on Lake Mweru has been hit by a drought that has caused food insecurity in the area.

Government saddened by loss of lives in Feira accident

16
Home Affairs minister Edgar Lungu
Home Affairs minister Edgar Lungu

Acting President Hon Edgar Lungu has said government has received with pain and anguish the death of nine people in the Kavalamanja-Feira Road Traffic Accident.

Hon Lungu who is also Home Affairs Minister said the accident was tragic and heart breaking not only to government but the country as a whole.

The Acting President in his message of condolences to the families of the nine people who died said he was awfully saddened at the loss of more innocent lives in yet another road accident.

“Allow me on behalf of government and indeed on my own behalf to convey my deepest condolences to the bereaved families. We pray that the Almighty God will console and give strength to the bereaved families during this excruciating period,” said the Acting President.

Hon. Lungu has wished the 18 injured victims a quick and full recovery.

He said the government was deeply concerned about the frequent road fatalities on the Zambian roads.
The Acting President has since urged Police and RTSA to work closely with motorists and other road users in ensuring that traffic rules and regulations were observed in order to make roads safer and deal with drivers abrogating traffic rules and regulations.

“We advise motorists to observe traffic rules and regulations and avoid driving whilst drunk or over-speeding so as to reduce on road carnage and loss of innocent lives and where possible, avoid driving during awkward hours,” stated Hon. Lungu.

The Acting President has since assured the bereaved families that government will come in and assist so as to lessen the burden shouldered on them.

Nine people died while 17 people sustained serious injuries yesterday when a Toyota Dyna Registration No. ALJ 9169 over-turned after the driver lost control after failing to negotiate a corner.

The accident occurred around 18:00hrs between Kavalamanja and Feira, which is 9 Km from the Great East Road.

The 17 injured people are admitted at Katondo Mission Hospital where they are receiving treatment.

Irresponsible actions of the Patriotic Front

21

Good morning ladies and gentlemen. I start this press conference by wishing those who were injured during the attack at BIGOCA a speedy recovery. I further wish to assure them that as responsible citizens of this country we will not rest until the day the culprits will be held accountable.

Two weeks ago a senior member of the MMD was roughed up and beaten by the PF cadres in full view of the police. Just two days ago the PF cadres again attacked people that gathered to pray for this country and its leadership. This is slowly but surely becoming the order of the day under the PF administration.

The savagery attack on defenseless clergy, members of civil society, opposition political parties and members of the press in the place of worship must be condemned in the strongest possible manner.

As NAREP we condemn what happened in Matero and find it very disturbing and unbelievable that the PF has continued stepping on the rights of the innocent people. The function that was disrupted was neither a political rally nor political meeting but a special church service for men and women of God who had gathered to pray for the many man-made problems this country is facing.

[pullquote]To the PF government, we implore you to, this time around stand up and own up to the misdeeds of your cadres and apologize to the nation and to the church and to the affected people with all seriousness it deserves.[/pullquote] We condemn the actions by the PF cadres and we wish to remind the republican president that he promised to govern this country based on the ten (10) commandments of the Holy Bible. Let this at least be one promise he makes every effort to keep. What we have witnessed in the recent passed is however the exact opposite to what the bible teaches us. Mr. Sata and the PF government have refused completely to listen to the cries of the many Zambians who are struggling to put a meal on the table. The people of Zambia who gave the PF a mandate to govern this country have rejected this violent, aggressive and non-consultative type of leadership by the PF government and it must now be clear even to the PF that it has failed.

We remind the secretary general of the PF Mr. Wynter Kabimba and the PF administration that Zambia does not belong to the few individuals benefiting and having more money in their pockets but to the many Zambians who are not able to afford a decent meal. The PF must be reminded that no political party comes to stay in government. We had UNIP and MMD that held power; the Zambian people were lied to for the sake of getting votes. Bear in mind that your time will come when you will be made to account for your action.

The PF government should tell us if what we are seeing now is the jobs that the youth were promised in 90 days. We cannot continue using innocent young people to attack harmless men and women of God out of pure selfishness. The PF must be assured that sending thugs to attack innocent people is not going to solve the problems that this country is facing. The PF must stop politicking and attacking people and concentrate on delivering development.

As a party that believes in its core values, we hereby register our disappointment and lack of trust in the Zambia Police that is now being used as a security wing of the Patriotic Front. We call upon the Inspector General of police Stella Libongani and her deputy Dr. Solomon Jere to choose between enforcing the law or to resign on moral grounds as they have completely failed to conduct themselves professionally from the time they were appointed to these positions.

As a woman and no doubt a mother, surely her heart should bleed at the events of last week. We wish to remind the police that you are there to protect the citizens of this country and not the PF cadres who are busy beating innocent people. The people of Zambia will never be safe if the police remain toothless or use their powers to frustrate bus drivers and other ordinary citizens who are merely trying to make a living.

We ask the PF to reflect on and remember the reasons they were ushered into power in 2011 and stop stepping on the rights of innocent people. We further wish to remind them that Zambia was declared a Christian nation and therefore we should respect the church regardless of the situation. The PF should allow citizens to gather and worship without any fear.

We demand that the police launch an investigation on the Matero incident and bring the culprits to book without any delay or political interference. We demand for justice and professionalism from the police service in following up this matter.

NAREP would love Mr. Sata to retire and leave in peace come 2016. We will respect, look after him as former head of state, as we embark on creating a new Zambia.

To the PF government, we implore you to, this time around stand up and own up to the misdeeds of your cadres and apologize to the nation and to the church and to the affected people with all seriousness it deserves.
We call upon all well-meaning Zambians and Christians to condemn what the PF is doing and continue praying to God for his intervention before the situation in our country gets out of hand.
Thank you and God be with you.

Sinazongwe residents pledges to standby Siamunene

20
Richwell Siamunene
UPND MP Richwell Siamunene

Sinazongwe residents have pledged total support towards their expelled area Member of Parliament Richwell Siamunene and have vowed to shame UPND President Hakainde Hichilema by making sure that his party loses the seat once by- elections are held in the constituency.

The residents who on Friday gave Mr Siamunene a thunderous welcome during his visit to the constituency to attend the burial of Mike Siamize, a UPND cadre and Mr Siamunene’s cousin who died last week in a road accident along the Livingstone road have vowed to teach Hichilema a lesson.

Proceedings at the burial site almost came to a standstill when Hon Siamunene’s ministerial vehicle arrived at Sinanjola village where Siamize has been buried much to the delight of the residents that gathered at the site.

Soon after the burial which was attended by Kalomo Member of Parliament Request Muntanga who represented Mr Hichilema, the residents who could not be controlled by the heavy presence of police officers thronged Hon Siamunene encouraging him to stand strong and be rest assured that he has the support of the people in the area.

A resident, Kenny Sibanda was heard telling Mr Siamunene that people in the area are so grateful to the government for initiating various developmental projects and that they will show appreciation by making sure that they voted for him now that UPND has expelled him.

Mr Sibanda added that residents in the area are fade up with the UPND which is expelling its members of parliament that have accepted to work with the government.

Meanwhile, over three thousand Sinazongwe residents in Chief Mweemba’s area over the weekend received free various medical services during the visit to the area by the mobile clinic from the provincial medical office.

Southern Province Mobile health services Coordinator Agness Chibuye disclosed this in an interview at Siatwinda rural health centre where the mobile clinic has been mounted that the response received from people in Mweemba chiefdom is overwhelming.

Mrs Chibuye told Mr Siamunene who visited the clinic to check on the services that the clinic was giving in the area for a total of five days, the clinic offered the residents various services such as laboratory tests, dental, eye and radiology services among others.

She added that the clinic was able to cater for both medical and surgical problems and that treatment was being given on the spot due to the ready availability of drugs.

Headman Simankawa who was at the clinic to receive medical attention thanked government for the opportunity given to the people of Chief Mweemba saying it is the first time that people in the area have been accorded an opportunity to access such treatment.

And speaking after his visit to the mobile hospital, Mr Siamunene said it is services such as those taken to his constituency that leaves him with no option but to work with the government.

He noted that for a long time, people in Chief Mweemba’s area have not had proper medical care due to long distance from the district hospital, a situation that has been denying them a chance to access proper health care and that because the PF government is a listening one, it has taken such services to the people.
