Government says it is working closely with traditional leaders in the country to rebrand traditional ceremonies in order to promote tourism, trade and industry.

Chiefs and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkandu Luo said a properly organized and rebranded traditional event can impact positively on the country’s development agenda.

Prof Luo said the Patriotic Front government is looking at the promotion of tradition and culture for sustainable development.

She said this in an interview with ZANIS yesterday on the sidelines of the Kazanga Kabompo traditional ceremony of the Nkoya people of Kabompo district in North Western province.

Prof Luo said it is government’s hope that in future local people will take the lead in organizing ceremonies so that they can showcase some of the products they can engage in trade and industry.

She said it is regrettable that traditional ceremonies are only synonymous with singing and dancing when they provide a platform for local people to engage in economic ventures that can help them better their lives.

And the Chief and Traditional Affairs Minister said government has no immediate plans to gazette chiefs that were degazetted by the colonialists because of financial constraints.

Professor Luo disclosed that a number of chiefs have approached her ministry to consider gazetting them but that the matter has financial implications.

She said there are currently 288 chiefs who are being paid allowances of about four thousand KR 4, 000 besides providing them with transport and constructing palaces for them.

And Kabompo West area Member of Parliament Abrose Lufuma who officiated at the event appealed to government to look for serious investors who can explore the vast mineral resources that North Western province is endowed with.

Mr Lufuma said the area has a lot of mineral resources such as copper, oil among other minerals but that these minerals have remained unexploited because of lack of investment in the area.

The Kabombo West Parliamentarian also thanked government for the support rendered to the organizing committee in hosting the ceremony.

Mr Lufuma also thanked President Michael Sata for creating Manyinga district and urged the president to create many more districts in North Western province in order to foster development in the area.

He also cautioned people in the area to desist from engaging in social activities that may expose them to the dangers of HIV/AIDS.

Meanwhile, Patron of Kazanga Kabompo traditional ceremony Crispin Shumina disclosed that this year’s ceremony was hosted in honour of American talk show host Oprah Winfrey whose latest DNA test traced her ancestry to the Nkoya people of Kabompo district.

Mr Shumina appealed to Government to facilitate the invitation of Ms Winfrey to Zambia so she can meet her relatives in Kabompo district.

MMD President Nevers Mumba has demanded that the PF immediately disbands the youth militia that it has reportedly set up to cause violence.

Addressing a news briefing at his residence in Kabulonga, Dr. Mumba condemned the PF youths for invading BIGOCA Church in Matero during Black Friday prayers.

He said the act of desecrating the House of God by PF youths is the highest form of disrespect that any government can show to God.

Dr. Mumba warned that the MMD and other like-minded organisations will from tomorrow launch a collective and sustained response to the PF violence.

He said other political parties and citizens will start arming themselves if the PF militia continues to pounce on innocent citizens.

“The PF has formed this militia group. We are not safe in our own country. If this continues, we will be forced as opposition to form our own groups to protect us because we can’t just sit and watch as we are being attacked, unless they (PF) come out and denounce this group and disband it,” he said

And Dr. Mumba says the PF has exhibited the highest form of arrogance by sending Ministers countrywide at a huge cost to the tax payer to go and explain subsidies

He said Zambians have refused to hear the PF messages on subsidy removal because it does not make economic sense at all.

Nkana reclaim top spot

18

Nkana returned to the top of the Faz Super Division table after a 1-0 away win over Nkwazi.
However, the win was secured in very unlikely circumstances.

Nkwazi defender Derrick Mwansa’s 70th minute own goal was enough for the 11-time champions to pick up the three points that came just four days after beating Zambia 2-1 in a training game in Kitwe.

Nkana reclaim their two-point lead on 26 points from 11 matches while Zesco United stay a very close second on 24 points.

The league now takes a two week break as the season makes way for 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Nkana will resume action on June 22 at home against Konkola Blades.

Nyambe: Beating Mine Police was not easy

3

Zesco United skipper Nyambe Mulenga has recounted that beating Konkola Mine Police 4-1 in Saturday’s Super League match at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola was not easy.

The victory took Zesco to the summit of the table 24 hours before second placed Nkana, who are a point behind the Ndola side; take on Nkwazi away in Lusaka on Sunday.

Mulenga said Mine Police are good side and put up a spirited fight in the Week 11 match despite ending as losers.

“We are happy with is win. This was a nice match although it was not easy; Mine Police is a good team but we prepared adequately for them,” he said.

The Zambia defender said the victory was a motivation to his team.

“It‘s (win) a motivation for us because we have set a standard we have to play 15 games unbeaten,”

Resurgent Zesco have scored 14 goals in their last four matches.

Matero MP Miles Sampa attended a Sunday Church Service at the Bible Gospel Outreach Church in Africa (BIGOCA) in Matero which was the scene of violent attacks during Black Friday prayers.

Mr. Sampa who is also Commerce, Trade and Industry Deputy Minister apologized to BIGOCA Bishop Peter Ndhlovu for the Friday chaos.

“I came here to say am sorry for the fracas on Friday. I could have prevented it if I had prior information but I was totally unaware,” Mr. Sampa said.

He told congregants that the unruly youths had no blessings from the party leadership.

“I wish to distance our party from the violence that happened in this place on Friday. We respect people’s rights to assemble and no one should be allowed to take away that right from anyone.”

Mr. Sampa further said the public is encouraged to debate the issue of the removal of subsidies on fuel and maize.

[pullquote]“I wish to distance our party from the violence that happened in this place on Friday. We respect people’s rights to assemble and no one should be allowed to take away that right from anyone.”[/pullquote]

“Government does not have the monopoly of wisdom. This Government is a listening Government, we shall listen to the views of the people. Feel free to debate this issue without fear,” Mr. Sampa said.

The area MP also donated Kr 20,000 to BIGOCA’s initiative of taking care of the aged in Matero Township.
And BIGOCA Presiding Bishop Peter Ndhlovu said his church will remain nonpartisan but will not refuse to pray for politicians.

“We have always said we are nonpartisan and nothing will change that. We will continue praying for this nation and its leadership. We have already forgiven those youths.”

He added, “They did not physically harass me. When they stormed the Church, I just sat there watching them. I didn’t run away. They approached me and they said aba niba mudala (this is our old man) and I know some of those boys who came here.

National soccer team defender Stoppila Sunzu weds

37

Sunzu-2

NATIONAL soccer team defender Stoppila Sunzu yesterday bade farewell to bachelorhood when he married Gift Katebe at a colourful wedding ceremony in Lusaka.

The towering Chipolopolo defender could not hide his excitement when asked how he felt to walk down the aisle.
Responding to questions from journalists, Sunzu said from the luxurious Chrysler car shortly before departing for a photo session: “I feel good.”

Stoppila said none of his Chipolopolo team mates were present at church because they were in camp preparing for this Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Lesotho, adding however, that he had extended an invitation to the Football Association of Zambia officials and was hopeful that they were going to be present at the reception at Sandy’s Creations later in the evening.

And Lusaka’s Nyumba Yanga-based Bethel Christian Centre bishop, Andrew Mwenda who based his message on Proverbs 17 verse 17 and John 15, urged the newly-weds not only to become husband and wife, but that they should become best friends as the Bible categorically stated that true friends in marriage sacrificed their lives for each other.

Bishop Mwenda said he was aware that Stoppila and Gift had best friends, but that with effect from yesterday, their respective best friends were “relegated” to third position.

He observed that Stoppila was a football star, but that soccer had an expiry date and thus advised the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations scorer of the winning goal that gave Zambia the country’s first ever Africa Cup title, to start building his life with effect from yesterday.

He urged the couple’s relatives and friends to help him in that area, but also cautioned relatives to the newly-weds not to become a burden to the young couple, saying Stoppila and Gift had become an “Independent Government”.

Zambians involved in creation of Ancient Egypt?

73

ancient egypt

Has an article instantly so profoundly changed your life that you realize you are no longer the same person you were minutes or half an hour before the event? The pivotal moment for me was Friday May 10 from 8:05 to 8:45am. I was supervising my students who were quietly taking their two hour final examinations. I scrolled down my e-mails and saw my friend’s name with whom I rarely communicate. The e-mail said read this attached article which I have just published.
The journal article that Dr. Chisanga Siame had just published was titled: “Katunkumene and Ancient Egypt in Africa” from the Journal of Black Studies of 20 March, 2013. As I was reading it, I realized that it was providing possible definitive proof for the first time that I, my ancestors, we Zambians and Africans were the founders of ancient Egypt. The ancient civilization of Egyptian Kingdoms headed by powerful Pharaohs dominated North Africa and the Middle East for almost two thousand years from c 3100 to 1090 B.C. E.

This was before Assyrians, Persians, the Babylonian Empire, Greeks, and Romans occupied Egypt. This was also before Christ. The Egyptian civilization was the first to create a large empire, establish writing using hieroglyphs, large scale political economy, the bureaucracy and built the sophisticated massive pyramids.

Europeans and their scholars for a long time have denied that any Africans were involved in the Egyptian civilization. Their argument was that if they built the Egyptian civilization, where are those same Africans and their descendants to day?

What excited me the most is that Dr. Siame had cracked the code which was hiding right under our noses. He found out that the Bemba term uku tunkumana about two thousand miles away South of Egypt may have descended from the name Tunka Men the name of the ancient kingdom of Sudan suggesting a connection between the Bemba of Zambia people and ancient Egypt.

Dr. Chisanga Siame also discovered that his clan Namwanga the name of Siame in Zambia may be traced back to the Kings of ancient Egypt named Pharaoh Siamen who ruled in Egypt from 986-967 B. C. E. As I was reading, I was getting more and more excited. I felt like calling all my relatives, my friends, President Sata and President Kaunda of Zambia, or Oprah Winfrey or President Obama, Nelson Mandela or any African who could listen.

Dr Siame found connections between “the mushabati of the Silozi language of Western Zambia and the word umhlabathi found in Sizulu and SiXhosa” in South Africa (p.265). Both could be traced back to the Egyptian Pharaohs burial practices.

He also found out that the use of Nya prefix to denote a woman among my own tribe the Tumbuka, as is NyaBanda or NyaNkhata, may have come from ancient Egypt when our ancestors lived there.

At this time you may be asking so many questions just I did. How did Dr. Siame come up with this knowledge? Why this information didn’t come from important famous big name scholars with big grants from Europe especially Paris and London? May he Harvard? Isn’t this an internet hoax? The answer is simple but also complicated.

Dr. Chisanga Siame graduated with a political science degree from University of Zambia in 1976. He obtained his Ph. D. in Political Philosophy from NorthWestern University. These degrees did not prepare him to do this research. He had to study on his own for many years mastering hieroglyphs, looked at the work of Egyptologists, and especially that he focused deeply on studying philology, and then the morphology, phonology, semantics and syntax of language. There is so much information in his short 20 page published article. He had to work very hard for many years on his own in a very solitary way to make these discoveries. He could not get any grant for his research.

Mutapa linked to Forest

0

Zambia Under-17 coach Oswald Mutapa Jr has been linked with the vacant top coaching job at Super Division side Forest Rangers.

Sources close to the development say Mutapa has agreed to join Forest.

The sources added that the immediate past Nkwazi coach is next week expected to be unveiled by the Ndola outfit.

“We have already appointed Oswald Mutapa as our coach and he has agreed to join us, you will hear the news very soon,” the source said.

Forest launched the search for a coach after dismissing Weston Mumba on May 4.
Meanwhile, Nkwazi fired Mutapa late in April.

Forest are rooted at the bottom of the table with four points in 10 matches.

Government issues warning to organisations opposed to subsidy removal

17

THE Government warned that it will not hesitate to de-register any organisation frastrating government effort.

Home affaris Deputy Mininster Nickson Chilangwa sounded the warning in Kafue during the official launch of the Retired Ministers and Kasaka Community Association of Clixby Estates.

Mr Chilangwa said the Government was ready to work with the church and any organisation that wanted to bring development but would not allow the church or any organisation to bring confusion in the country.

Mr Chilangwa said the removal of subsides was a decision taken for the good of the country.

He, however, said if the church felt there should be dialogue over the removal of susidies, it should follow the right channel and not try to bring confusion.

Mr Chilangwa called on the people of Kasaka to trust the Government on the issue of subsides as the move was made in the interest of the nation.

On homosexuality, Mr Chilangwa commended the church for opposing calls for homosexuality in Zambia.

He further said the Government would not accept calls for the release of the gay couples.

Speaking at the same function, Kafue District Commissioner (DC) Grace Ngulube condemed what happened at Bible Gospel Church in Africa (BIGOCA), saying men of God should desist from politiking as the move would bring the name of the church in disrepute.

Ms Ngulube said the church was there to give guidaiance to the Government and not to bring confusion in the nation.

‘We as Christians, let’s work together with the Government and bring development to this nation, not frustrating Government efforts,” she said

PRESIDENT Michael Sata has said that Zambia has posted great improvement in Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) due to increased investor confidence and improved general investment climate.

Mr Sata said in Japan yesterday that the country’s FDI inflows had further been boosted by the improved investor perception, enhanced investment climate and improved trust between the public and private sectors.

The President said during the opening day of the fifth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD V) that Zambia was conducive for further investments.

“The recent oversubscription of the debut Eurobond on the international capital market is a clear attestation of international investor confidence in our economy,” Mr Sata said.

He said that Japan had continued to be a major player in Zambia’s FDI landscape with several firms investing in the Southern African country.

Speaking during the third session dubbed: ‘Dialogue with the private sector’, Mr Sata said recently, Zambia witnessed the establishment of Hitachi manufacturing plant in Lusaka set to boost development in the mining sector in the country and beyond.

On TICAD, Mr Sata said Zambia was ready to support the implementation of the outcomes of the conference and the lessons learnt from the previous such meetings.

“Going forward is Zambia’s desire, and the TICAD outcome will invigorate and build on gains made under TICAD IV of boosting economic growth, ensuring human security and addressing climate change.” Mr Sata said.

“I wish to reaffirm our Government’s commitment to the implementation of the Yokohama outcome document, namely, the Yokohama Declaration and Yokohama Action Plan 2013-2017.”

He paid tribute to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abbe for inviting Zambia to participate in the conference, saying it was a rare opportunity to take stock of progress made in implementing the resolutions from the previous summit.

“It provides an opportunity to share ideas and address challenges and adopt new strategies in our quest to enhance and deepen cooperation between Africa and Japan,” Mr Sata said.

He said African countries had been registering commendable progress in fostering economic growth and improving general living conditions of the people on the continent.

“These can be partly attributed to the continent’s commitment to undertaking reforms with support from cooperating partners like Japan,” the President said.

On the Public Private Partnership (PPP) dialogue, Mr Sata said the concept was an important ingredient in the creation of strong and enabling business environment.

He said through the PPP dialogue within Africa and with developed economies like Japan, synergies could be created to address the challenges.

“We commended the support that the Japanese Government has continued to give in fostering the private sector in African countries,” Mr Sata said.

Zambia had greatly benefited from public/private sector dialogue through the implementation of the Triangle of Hope initiative with the assistance from Japan.

Through the TICAD process, the Zambian Government has implemented a strategic action initiative for economic development from 2006 to 2012 aimed at creating a platform for Zambia’s economic diversification, among other objectives.

“I am happy to report that through the initiatives, Zambia has established a framework of dealing with the business community that is anchored on political will and integrity, private sector dynamism and integrity and civil service efficiency and integrity as three key drivers towards accelerated economic development,” Mr Sata said.

Today’s Message: Do Good

bible

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“Even Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power; who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.”
(Acts 10:38, ASV)

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria

The first thing Jesus did before healing, before ministering, before delivering is that He was good to people. Think about that for a moment. We all have an assignment. You could say that we all have a ministry. It may not be up in front of people. It may not be to go overseas and be a missionary. Our ministry starts by being good to people.

When goodness flows out of our hearts, it catches people’s attention. It causes them to want to know more about what we have. We can say all day long, “I love you,” but true love is seen in what we do. If I really love you, I’ll be good to you. I’ll prefer you. God said to Abraham, “I will bless you and you will be a blessing.” One key to being blessed is: are you willing to be a blessing? Are you willing to do good?

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father, today I ask that You empower me to do good. Help me to love others. Use me to be a blessing and be a testimony of Your goodness so that others may come to know You in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Power fans riot, demand Chambeshi leaves

15

Arthur Davies Stadium erupted into its worst riots in the clubs history after Power Dynamos lost 1-0 to visiting Green Buffaloes.

The Power fans prime target was coach Beston Chambeshi who has failed to lift the teams fortunes after last season’s failure to defending the league and Barclays Cup.

“We want change! We want change! and “We want (Fordson )Kabole!” rung around Power’s dressing room where Power and Chambeshi were holed up while Buffaloes and their coach Patrick Phiri safely made their way out of Arthur Davies and were applauded by the angry fans.

“Uleya elyo weka bwelako kuno (Go and never return)!” one fan shouted.

Power fans were later pushed back from the stadium by riot police before replying with stones and bottles forcing police to retreat briefly.

Police later replied with tear gas and fought a mini running battle with fans while officials and football fans ducked for safety inside the Arthur Davies bar and stadium offices.

“I have been a Power supporter for the last 30 years and this is the first time I have ever seen such a scene here,” said one Power fan.

Ex-Power defender Zifa Nkhoma was also manhandled by police who mistook him for one of the rioter but was saved by officials and onlookers from being bundled into a police van.

Chambeshi dumped his car at the stadium so too did his players who were also forced to abandon their brand new luxury team bus and left the stadium in their old Rosa mini bus under heavy police escort.

Meanwhile, Power were sucker punched by Buffaloes after striker Percy Bilyoti slipped the ball through goalkeeper Joshua Titima’s legs in the 87th minute.

Oasis forum condemns political violence

5

The Oasis Forum has condemned the actions by the Patriotic Front (PF) cadres who attacked a peaceful gathering of several Civil Society Organisations (CSO) in Lusaka yesterday.

The consortium of civil society gathered at the Bible Gospel Outreach Church in Africa (BIGOCA) in Matero Township to pray and peacefully protest government’s removal of subsidies on maize and fuel.

In a joint statement issued to ZANIS in Lusaka today, the forum noted that the action by the PF cadres is unprecedented and totally shocking.

The statement was signed by Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ) General Secretary Suzzane Matale, Law Association Zambia (LAZ) President James Banda, Non- Governmental Organisation Coordinating Council (NGOCC) Board Chairperson Beatrice Grillo and Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC) Father Cleophas Lungu respectively.

The association has also accused the PF government of having introduced what it termed as intolerance in politics after having spoken to some of the injured victims.

It has indicated that the manner of the violence portrayed yesterday suggests pre- meditated and planned behaviour.

The association further lamented the diminishing space for dissent in the country adding that in a democratic set up, citizens and opposition political parties must be accorded legitimate space to register different opinions and government must not be seen to stifle genuine disagreement.

The Oasis Forum has however reiterated its call on the Zambia Police to be impartial and protect all citizens at all times.

It has also called on the PF cadres to embrace civil ways of co-existence.

Lime deny Chabby Chabala link

1

Struggling Super Division side Lime Hotspurs secretary Brown Phiri has brushed aside reports suggesting that his club has appointed Levy “Chabby” Chabala as coach.

Chabala has been linked to Lime after he is said to have resigned as coach of Super Division side Kalulushi Modern Stars on Thursday.

Phiri said Lime are yet to appoint a new coach.

He revealed that the Ndola outfit was expecting to name the new club head coach next week.

“Not yet, we will be making that decision (to hire a new coach) next week,” Phiri said on Friday.

Lime advertised the club’s vacant coaching job after firing Mathews Ndhlovu last month before reinstating him as acting head coach.

Lime are second from the bottom of the table with five points in 10 matches ahead of their Week 11 match against Konkola Blades in Chililabombwe on Saturday.
