MMD youth commend PF for not adopting Masumba in Mufumbwe

82
FILE: Steven Masumba is lifted by PF cadres after he resigned from the MMD and as local government deputy minister in Lusaka.

The Movement for Multi party Democracy (MMD) has hailed the Patriotic Front (PF) leadership in Mufumbwe for choosing Elliot Kamwendo at District, Constituency and Provincial levels as their candidate ahead of the Mufumbwe by election.

National Youth Secretary Tobias Kafumukache said that the action was good as it has taught former Deputy Minister of Local Government Stephen Masumba a lesson.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka today, Mr. Kafumukache also cautioned Members of Parliament (MPs) that cause unnecessary by-elections to take a leaf from what has happened to Mr. Masumba.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kafumukache says the MMD youth leadership supports the action taken by Mwandi Member of Parliament Michael Kaingu who tore President Michale Sata’s speech at parliament.

He said the action was entirely appropriate and deserves support by all well meaning Zambians as it has shown bravery and heroism and that the youths feel that the act was honourable adding that a message was sent.

The MMD National Youth Secretary further said that the youths in the MMD feel that Mr. Kaingu was acting as an ambassador for the ordinary Zambians alleging that the document lacked merit and did not address the issues to do with the health sector and the needs of unemployed youths in the country.

He stated that the technocrats who drafted the speech did a shallow input as they did not address the concerns of the youths.

Mr. Kafumukache observed that the PF has remained silent on various issues affecting the nation which include among others the windfall tax on the mines and oil procurement for the country.

He, however, expressed concern over the high number road traffic accidents saying that they have a ripple effect on the health system and the economy of the country.

He also cited gender based violence which is also on the increase as some of the issues that need to be addressed with vigour.

Mr. Kafumukache has since called on government to spearhead favourable measures and policies aimed at improving the living standards of the people.

PRESIDENT Sata said that Government is this year targeting a seven percent growth in the economy, which he is confident shall be attained.

The President also wants the country to maintain a single digit year-end inflation.

President Sata has also said his economic managers will ensure Government borrowing is managed and the exchange rate remains stable while investment must increase.

He was speaking here yesterday when he addressed business executives during the Zambia Business Forum in the South-South media boardroom.

Mr Sata said Government will continue passing laws that are business-friendly in order to accelerate economic growth.

He promised incentives for investors opting for rural and remote areas, as well as those that partner with local entrepreneurs.

President Sata wants to see the cost of doing business in Zambia reduced.

Infrastructure such as roads, railway, airports, border facilities and power stations to support trade and investment are a priority area for Government to invest in.

The World Bank ranks Zambia among the top 10 fastest growing global economies in the world in its 2011-2015 projection.

According to the 2011 world business survey, Zambia is also one of the top investment leaders , having attracted massive investments in mining and tourism sectors and most recently the US$750 million Eurobond.

President Sata said Government will remain committed to ensuring Zambia remains one of the most attractive places in the world to invest and do business in.
“Zambia’s central location offers a gateway to Southern African Development Community and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa trade blocs, making it ideal to export to the regional market. Zambia also has easy access to the sea ports of Durban in South Africa, Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and Walvis bay in Namibia,” Mr Sata said.

The President also acknowledged the warm and cordial bilateral and trade relations Zambia has with the United States.

He renewed his invitation to international visitors to attend the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) General Assembly to be co-hosted by Zambia and Zimbabwe next year.

“It is my pleasure, therefore, to invite business executives and captains of industries here to take advantage of the general assembly and invest in tourism in Zambia,” Mr Sata said.

Meanwhile, Mr Sata has invited American investors to invest in Zambia as “we are ready to enter into agreements with American investors. We have a lot of opportunities in the mining and other sectors of the economy which need to be utilised”.

The President said Zambia is a very peaceful country and that the government is committed to reducing interest rates and the cost of doing business in Zambia.

Mr Sata said interest rates will continue to go down for the country to record investment in key sectors such as transport and communication.

The President also took time to answer questions from investors, whom he assured that Government will facilitate visa requirements for them.

“It will be easy for you (investors) to access visas upon arrival in Zambia. My Minister of Home Affairs [Edgar Lungu] is working on something to address that,” Mr Sata said.

And speaking earlier, American investor Mike Lorenzo said Zambia is a stable country with a lot of potential in business.
He said the country has recorded economic growth in the past few years.

UPND granted permission to commence contempt proceedings against Police Commissioner Dr Solomon Jere

Lusaka Province Commissioner of Police Solomon Jere

THE Lusaka High Court has granted United Party for National Development (UPND) an application to commence contempt proceedings against Lusaka Division Police Commissioner Dr Solomon Jere for stopping its political rally on September 9, 2012.

Lusaka High Court Judge Justice Chasi granted UPND permission to commence contempt proceedings against Dr Jere, the second responded in the judicial review proceedings against the Attorney General.

This is in a matter in which UPND through its deputy general secretary Walusiku Lyambela of house number 30 Mpulungu road, Olympia Park has dragged Dr Jere for contempt for refusing the party to hold a rally despite a court order which gave the party powers to go ahead.

Judge Chashi however ordered the UPND to file a motion within 14 days failure to which the leave granted would be taken away.

The court this week joined Dr Jere in the judicial review proceedings in which the UPND had sued Attorney General Mumba Malila as the second respondent to the proceedings.

UPND which earlier had only sued Mr Malila, applied for Dr Jere to be joined in the judicial review proceedings on grounds that he had issued separate instructions to the effect that even with the Court Order in force, he would not allow the rally to be held on September 9, 2012, and as such, he was party to the proceedings.

UPND also applied for leave to commence contempt proceedings against Dr Jere for disobeying a court order.

The UPND contended that Dr Jere acted in contemptuous disregard of the Order of the court by defying its directive and enjoying a media campaign of disparaging the court.

“In the premises, I crave for leave to commence contempt proceedings against the 2nd respondent,” submitted UPND lawyer Chad Muleza.

Satisfying Zambian Hunger for Culture

11

The book “Satisfying Zambian Hunger for Culture” by Prof Mwizenge S. Tembo is finally published. The 3 other contributors in the book are Ms. Ruth Mugala in Zambia, Ms. Claire Miti in the United Kingdom, and Mr. James Mwape in the United States. His Excellency the First President of Zambia, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, was gracious enough to give his blessings to the book by writing the foreword.

What is the book about? We Zambians are experiencing tremendous social change, cultural tensions, and sometimes confusion during the last 48 years since our political independence in 1964. Many people migrated into the cities and professionals immigrated and scattered abroad in a growing Diaspora.

Many non-Zambians have visited and have fallen in love with Zambia. Many Zambians have intermarried among the 72 tribes and have married partners from abroad from different races and ethnic groups. The diversity of the Zambian culture has created a cultural crisis, a void or vacuum, tension, ambivalence, and turmoil among most Zambians and especially their younger children. The disorientation and cultural confusion that started during British colonialism in the late 1890s has been worsened due to the demands of globalization and rapid social change.

What are Zambian culture and technology in our society of 13 million? How did we as a nation come to identify ourselves as Zambians from the 72 separate tribes?

The book has 17 Chapters which include how girls and women, boys and men were brought up in traditional Zambia and the influence of urbanization. How Zambians identify themselves and naming customs, parenting, kinship, nshima and other traditional foods and meals including various relishes, and eating customs. There are discussions of Zambian traditional dances, traditional medicine, causes of disease, illness and healing, the role of religion, Christianity, witchcraft and spirituality. How did multiparty democracy develop? Some traditional philosophical ideas are discussed in relation to contemporary life.

All of these and other topics are explored with discussions on how Zambians can lead better lives today using some of the traditional culture and technology and combining them with what is positive from modern influences. There are some very clear recommendations on how we can strengthen our lives today. These are the issues that the author and the contributors hope Zambians and others will adopt in their lives.

The book: “Satisfying Zambian Hunger for Culture” is not intended to simply sit on the shelf after reading it but to be both educational and provide broad everyday guidelines to all readers in improving the lives of adults, children, and families of Zambians and all the people who have a deep interest in Zambian culture and life. The book is meant to encourage Zambians inside and outside the country to hold family and community contemplative conversations about Zambian culture and technology.

For example raising Zambians from girls to women might involve the ChiNamwali or Chisungu puberty rite of passage ceremony. The raising of boys to men which might include the Zambian mukanda rite of passage ritual of puberty for boys in rural, urban areas in Zambia as well as among Zambian communities in the diaspora. Many older Zambian men might be asked to get involved and volunteer to be bashibukombe or mentors for boys in men’s groups all over Zambia and abroad. The book also encourages Zambians to get involved in traditional dances and to try eating some of the neglected but quiet delicious and nutritious traditional Zambian relishes with nshima. There are many other recommendations that will interest most Zambians and millions of other people that might have an interest in Zambian culture. You can buy this historic book now or ask your nearest bookstore to order it from.

United Party for National Development (UPND) Lusaka youth leader Brian Mizinga says he is happy with the conduct of Zambia police today at the Church service held today to celebrate the life of the late former first Lady Betty Kaunda.

Mr. Mizinga who spoke to ZANIS in an interview yesterday shortly after the funeral service said he was happy that no one was harassed by the police or party cadres from both the opposition and the ruling party.

He said despite a few provocative moves from the ruling party cadres the UPND was not in any way going to respond as they wanted to mourn Mama Betty with dignity and respect.

He said the late Mama Betty was a wonderful and caring woman that deserved respect even in her death.

Meanwhile, Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) president Edith Nawakwi has described Late Mama Betty as a mother that loved all.

Ms. Nawakwi who also attended the church service held in respect of the late Former first lady and Freedom fighter Mama Betty said Zambians should learn to embrace one another and develop the spirit of unity.

She further expressed happiness with the manner political party cadres handled themselves adding that funerals should be more peaceful and dignified.

First republican President Kenneth Kaunda places a wreath on the grave of his late wife Betty

First Republican President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda has described his late wife as a great activist for Zambia’s Independence, a dear wife, friend, advisor and supporter.

Dr. Kaunda, in a message read on his behalf by family representative Pius Kasutu during a Church Service at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, said the journey of life with Mama Betty was a fruitful one.

Dr. Kaunda recounted events of the past few weeks when he and his wife celebrated their 66th anniversary without knowing that the end of the lovely journey of their marriage vows was near.

“My dear girl, your departure has been unexpected. In fact, on the night of Tuesday September 18, 2012, the day before your passing, I was in Durban, South Africa receiving the Mahatma Gandhi Peace Prize,” he said.

He said, “There, I shared with others the song I sang for you during our courtship, the song of Pagna Moon. I told them that you had days earlier gone to Harare, Zimbabwe to visit our daughter Musata, son in law and our grandchildren,” he said.

“My girl Betty ours was a journey of Happiness and love,” said Dr. Kaunda.

[pullquote]“I recall the times when Betty, my girl could go and ask for food from the colonial masters when I was in prison, and my children running away when I came back home with long a beard, this was because they never knew me to be with them because they were always with the mother, Mayo kwaisa ichimuntu no mwefu uutali,” recounted Dr. Kaunda.[/pullquote]

He further described the death of Mama Betty as very unexpected.

Dr. Kaunda said working together during the struggle for independence was the most difficult time for the family as he had to leave her with the children for a long time amidst the challenges of providing for the family.

He further described his late wife as a freedom Fighter who led fellow women to strengthen the struggle despite the dangers that came along.

“I recall the times when Betty, my girl could go and ask for food from the colonial masters when I was in prison, and my children running away when I came back home with long a beard, this was because they never knew me to be with them because they were always with the mother, Mayo kwaisa ichimuntu no mwefu uutali,” recounted Dr. Kaunda.

Dr. Kaunda said Mama Betty’s involvement in the struggle was for the love of peace and justice.

“Betty never hated the colonial masters but she was against the injustice of the masters,” he explained.

He said despite not been in the lime light, Betty was always in the forefront of organizing women in support of harmony among families together with other first ladies.

Dr. Kaunda, however, attributed his marriage and success with his late wife to a partnership that came through Gods’ divine love.

Meanwhile, Daughter, Granddaughters and grandsons to the late Mama Betty have described Mama Betty as a pillar of hope trust and hard work who always had a heart for the people without segregation.

Daughter Masata Banda from Zimbabwe where Mama Betty went to visit and later died said it is such unforgettable moment as she hardly knew that her mother visited her for the last time.

Mrs. Banda said Mama Betty was a preacher of peace, Unity and love for all people.

She said Mama Betty never got tired to teacher her children, grand children and great grand children the better ways of life and the importance of justice and harmony among people.

The former first lady was born on November 17, 1928 in Chinsali and will today be put to rest at the Kaunda’s farm Estate near state lodge in Lusaka.

Kampala Stadium Gets Touch-ups Before Uganda-Zambia Game

14

Namboole Stadium in Uganda has been closed to allow repairs to be made ahead of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Zambia on 13 October.

BBC Sport reports that the decision follows a complaint by Faz to the Confederation of African Football over a week ago about the playing field, which it claimed was not ready to host a high-profile match.

Zambia’s two-man advance team visited Uganda and took pictures of the pitch, dressing rooms and toilets.

And in a letter to Caf, Faz General Secretary George Kasengele requested urgent intervention into the matter, calling for Fufa to consider improving the playing area and dressing rooms so that they meet internationally accepted standards.

Fufa chief executive officer Edgar Watson has confirmed that reparation work will be carried out.

“We want to have a good game without any complaints,” the former Uganda Cranes skipper told BBC Sport.

Namboole Stadium chairman Dan Tamwesigire revealed that all events in the stadium have suspended in order to carry out the improvements.

He told BBC Sport: “Yes, our partners Fufa asked us to make certain repairs ahead of the game and we have started doing so.”

The Cranes, who are coached by Scotsman Bobby Williamson, started training last week with a majority of local-based players training,
while residential training starts on 30 September.

They are 1-0 down to Zambia from the first leg of the final-round qualifier – a Christopher Katongo goal giving the African champions a
slender advantage.
Uganda have not qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations since 1978.

Mayuka A doubt For Everton Trip

8

Chipolopolo striker Emmanuel Mayuka is a doubt for his English side’s away Premier League match to Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Mayuka sustained hurt his ankle in the last league match when Southampton beat Aston Villa 4-1 at home.

The striker was introduced in the 76th minute.

Earlier this week, Southampton assistant manager Andy Crosby who revealed that Mayuka was injured indicated that the player is expected to be back within a few days.
“Emmanuel Mayuka has hurt his ankle a little bit,” Crosby told the club website.

Subsquently the player missed Tuesday’s League Cup tie in which Southampton beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 to reach the last 16.

Mayuka has been named in the 24-member Chipolopolo squad for the crucial 13 October, final round Africa Cup qualifier against Uganda away in Kampala.

Zambia are carrying a 1-nil advantage from the first leg played on 8 September in Ndola.

Mama Betty requiem service incident free

28
Former president Rupiah Banda chats with Patriotic Front Secretary General Wynter Kabimba at Mama Betty’s funeral.

The requiem service for Mama Betty Kaunda held at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross this morning was incident free. This unlike the previous service where over 100 PF slogan chanting thugs attacked UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema.

The service was attended by hundreds of people including acting President Alexander Chikwanda, vice President Guy Scott, ministers, former president Rupiah Banda, opposition leaders, diplomats and people from all walks of life.

Government had overruled police decision to bar political parties from wearing their party regalia at Mama Betty Kaunda’s burial today.

Home Affairs Permanent Secretary Maxwell Nkole said dress code would not be restricted because Mama Betty Kaunda was a unifying factor in the nation.

Mr Nkole said contrary to the police directive banning the political party regalia, political parties will be free to adorn their colours.

He however said all political parties should have Marshalls to control their cadres.

Mr Nkole urged political parties to avoid confrontations of any kind during and after the funeral.

Mr Nkole however said some party cadres who in the past have been associated with violence are not allowed to attend the funeral procession and burial.
Mr Nkole said he expects the police to be polite but effective in regulating the procession and burial of Mama Betty Kaunda.

Earlier, Lusaka Province Police Commissioner Solomon Jere announced that political party regalia had been banned at burial of Mama Betty Kaunda.

Super Division Preview: Zesco Seek Vital 3 Points at Eagles

3

Zesco United on Saturdays hope to get a win at one of the Faz Super Division’s most difficult away locations.

The three-time champions’ visit 12th placed Green Eagles in Choma who have lost just three matches of their last 10 home games this season.

Only Power Dynamos, Nakambala Leopards and Napsa Stars all came away with the three points in Choma where Eagles have won three and drawn five of their home games this season.

Second placed Zesco desperately need to stay in touch with leaders Zanaco with seven matches to go heading into this weekend’s Week 25 games as the title race heats up.

Five points separate Zanaco and Zesco who are on 48 and 43 points respectively from 23 matches played.

And Zesco coach Wedson Nyirenda will be banking on striker Jackson Mwanza who despite being on a healthy nine goals, has not scored since July 21 in a 3-2 away win at Napsa Stars.

However, the recent return of striker Lottie Phiri who scored in his first match back in a 1-0 Barclays Cup quarterfinal win over Konkola Blades on September 15 should give Zesco some optimism on Saturday.

Zesco and Eagles first leg meeting ended on May 23 saw Nyirenda’s side win 2-1 in Ndola.

Meanwhile in the rest of this weekend’s Week 25 fixtures, Zanaco visit Konkola Mine Police in Chililabombwe while defending champions Power Dynamos await Konkola Blades at Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe.

Nchanga Rangers host Roan United at Nchanga Stadium in Chingola and Green Buffaloes visit Forest Rangers at Dola Hill in Ndola.

14th placed Nakambala Leopards are in Ndola to face 15th positioned Indeni in a relegation dogfight.

And at Woodlands Stadium in Lusaka, Nkana visit National Assembly in our featured match of the day.

Across town in the capital on Sunday,Napsa Stars visit Red Arrows at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka just two weeks after the former beat the latter 1-0 in the Barclays Cup quarterfinals in Kitwe.
