Renard: We Want Revenge Against Nigeria

58

Herve Renard has said winning their first game will be very important before plotting revenge against Nigeria.

Zambia has been drawn in Group C at the 2013 Africa Cup against Burkina Faso, Ethiopia and perennial nemesis Nigeria.

The African champions face Ethiopia in their opening game on January 21 in Nelspruit.

“We must negotiate our opening match against Ethiopia,” Renard told SuperSport.

“The opening match is very, very important in a competition so we must treat everyone very seriously.”

Zambia will follow this up with a January 27 meeting against Nigeria also in Nelspruit in both sides penultimate Group C match.

“We crushed out of the quarterfinals in 2010, we lost to Nigeria,” Renard said.

“So we have a good chance of revenge against a very good Nigerian team.”

Zambia was beaten 5-4 on post-match penalties by Nigeria in the last eight after a scoreless game at the end of extra-time during the 2010 tournament in Angola.

Zambia have also lost their last two meetings against Nigeria including a 2-0 loss in a friendly last November away in Kaduna.

Iris Kaingu fined K10 million

Former Community Development Minister Michael Kaingu’s daughter Iris has been fined K10 million after she was convicted of making an obscene materials.
Lusaka Resident Magistrate Prince Mwiinga in passing sentence ordered Iris to pay the fine or serve nine months simple imprisonment.
By time of publishing, Iris’s legal team was processing payment.

It is alleged that on dates unknown but between December 1, 2010 and November 23, 2011 in Lusaka, Ms. Kaingu jointly and whilst acting together with another unknown person, Ms. Kaingu did make obscene cinematography films that were likely to corrupt morals.

In his judgement, Magistrate Mwiinga stated that after having watched the sex video himself, there is proof beyond reasonable doubt that the video is likely to corrupt morals of individuals that may get their hands on it.

He further stated that it was established that the duo where aware of the laptop webcam recording the entire scene.

The Immorality of Convicting Iris Kaingu

158
Iris Kaingu being escorted to Lusaka Central Prison.

By Theresa Lungu

The picture of Iris Kaingu entering Lusaka Central Prison, her head bowed in shame, her young face marred with worry is a testimony of Zambia’s twisted and incompetent justice system. Thankfully her bright yellow blouse throws an aura of hope around her. In a short space of time she has gone from a carefree college student to a convicted criminal. Her crime? She and her boyfriend took videos of themselves having consensual sex in the privacy of their room.

Iris is 21 years old, technically an adult and yet still so young and impressionable. I am sure many of us recall our college days, drinking, illicit sex and other unsavory activities that as terrible as they maybe, are the right of passage for young people. At the same time it is not all college students who are mischievous, many are on the straight and narrow, basically just studying and missing all the fun! Ok, the point I am trying to make is youthful offenders such as Iris must be given a chance to redeem themselves and not be sent to prison.

As a matter of fact I wouldn’t call Iris’s deed a crime, I view it as an error in judgment. I am sure Iris rues setting up that video camera. What good is Iris’s imprisonment going to do for her life? She has already been slandered and paraded on television and in newspapers as the shame of the nation. Her future is uncertain and potentially ruined because the justice system and public opinion has rendered her a criminal.[pullquote]If any adult in that court room has never had sexual relations then let them throw the first stone[/pullquote].

I keep imagining the Judge in the case sitting down and watching the video as evidence. Did he honestly think two young people having sex was bad for the development and moral fabric of Zambia? Was he rewinding and pausing the video to capture all the details? How did he decide to convict Iris? If we are going to convict people over sex then we may as well go full throttle and convict adulterers, dead beat dads and everyone else in between.

Convicting people solely on moral behavior is a misjudgment. If I had a chance to visit Iris in that filthy jail cell at Lusaka central prison, I would hold her hand and tell her to put her head back up. She is not a criminal, she is a young woman who fumbled on the path of life like all of us have done at one point or another. Her erring must not be the end of her life, this must be a new beginning for her. She has already shown maturity and resilience in facing her public conviction. There is no sentence bigger than shame and rejection. Sending Iris to prison will be sentencing her two times over.

Iris must be pardoned and returned to school. I am positive that she will make a good citizen of herself but we must give her a chance first.
Some commendable citizens have taken matters into their own hands and started a Facebook page to pardon Iris. Those on the ground in Zambia, especially women’s rights groups must also mount support for Iris at her sentencing on Thursday and make sure that young woman goes home to her family and carry on with her education.

Iris, hang on in there. If any adult in that court room has never had sexual relations then let them throw the first stone.

Lubinda condemns opposition parties for missing Independence Day Celebrations

42
FILE: President Sata confers with Given Lubinda

Government has condemned opposition political parties for their refusal to attend the 48th Independence Day Celebrations. Speaking during the celebrations in Ndola yesterday, Foreign Affairs Minister Given Lubinda described the opposition’s absence as a refusal to acknowledge that Zambia was an independent state.

“This is a day when we honour our freedom fighters as well as celebrate freedom from bondage so refusal to attend the celebration on the pretext of poverty is means refusal to acknowledge that we are an Independent state,” said Lubinda.

“Whether poor or rich we should all come out to celebrate our day,” he said.

Lubinda further stated that missing the Independence Day Celebrations with an excuse that other people were starving was the same as being a Christian who did not accept the birth of Jesus Christ.

Lubinda said such political leaders had rendered themselves irrelevant and were not fit to aspire for leadership.

“You should not aspire to lead Zambia because you cannot lead a country when you have declared yourself irrelevant by not attending national events.

Lubinda reiterated Government’s commitment to empower Zambians especially women and the youth through social and economic driven initiatives which are evident in the recently released K32.2 trillion national budget.

He said everyone in the Patriotic Front Government will work with transparency and accountability so that the budget works to the benefit of all Zambians.

Lubinda urged the people of Ndola to unite and pray for the nation as well as for President Michael Sata.

“Let us put aside our differences and continue praying for unity in our country so that we can build a proud future and let us also pray for our Republican President so that God can guide him in his heavy task of working for this country,” he said.

And -Kazungula District Commissioner Pascalina Musokotwane has expressed disappointment that some opposition political party members are shunning national events such as independence day.

Ms Musotwane said that every well meaning Zambian regardless of their political affiliation should commemorate independence day as some people sacrificed their lives for the country to be independent.

She further added that it was unfortunate that some leaders are advising their members to stay away from state functions.

Immigration Department Director General Anderson Phiri fired

32

Immigration Department director general Anderson Phiri has been relieved of his duties for failing to implement Government’s order to deport Innscor Zambia operations director, Jane Sharamanga.

Home Affairs public relations officer Moses Suwali said in a statement in Lusaka yesterday that Mr Phiri who was expected to retire next year, had been dropped in national interest after failing to execute a deportation order against Ms Sharamanga and Innscor managing director Henry Clarke.

Mr Phiri is said to have ignored the order which was signed by Home Affairs Minister Edgar Lungu to have Ms Sharamanga deported after being accused of insulting her employees.

Mr Suwali said the way in which the deportation was handled left much to be desired because the orders by the minister were not executed.

“Something was fishy in the Immigration Department and hence the axe had to fall on the head as the person in charge,” he said.

Deputy Director General, Moola Milimo would take over on acting capacity but he has been directed to clean up the mess at the department.

He said the ministry had received numerous complaints regarding the corruption tendencies at the department and wanted the trend to end.

“Mr Milimo has been advised not to be complacent but ensure that the poor working culture among the employees in the department is eradicated because efficiency and effectiveness in service delivery is expected,” Mr Suwali said.

He warned other heads of departments in the ministry to take a leaf from Mr Phiri’s fate to avoid falling into the same predicament.

Mr Lungu signed the deportation order for the two managers over two weeks ago but was shocked last week to learn that the duo was still in Zambia.

The deportation was necessitated by revelations in the Sunday Times of Zambia of gross violation of workers’ rights by Ms Sharamanga who had been dismissing HIV positive workers as well as those that fell pregnant.

While the department had managed to deport Mr Clarke, Ms Sharamanga disappeared for days before presenting herself at the Ministry on Monday where she was handed over to the department.

Police in Kaoma use tear-gas to disperse irate farmers demanding to be paid their money

Police in Kaoma yesterday used tear-gas canisters to disperse over 500 irate tobacco farmers who wanted to beat up an accountant from Japan Tobacco International group of companies for non-payment of their dues.

The farmers almost descended on the accountant and blocked the door to Regina Home based care where the payments for the 2011/2012 tobacco sold to the Japanese company were being made.

However, police quickly whisked the accountant away and used tear-gas to control the situation.

Kaoma police officer – in –charge Rodgers Chiwila appealed to the irate farmers to follow proper procedures when airing their grievances as the law will not defend perpetrators of violence.

Meanwhile, Kaoma district commissioner Joster Manjolo has threatened to suspend and chase away investors who come in the name of uplifting the living standards of farmers but end up cheating them.

This came to light yesterday when over 500 hundred tobacco farmers stormed his office to air their grievances on how Japanese Tobacco International (JTI) group of companies was failing to pay them their monies.

Speaking of behalf of his fellow tobacco farmers, Richard Musangu of Kamuni area in Kaoma district complained to government through the office of the district commissioner to assist them so that they could get their funds.

Mr Musangu said the Patriotic Front government was a listening government that intends to put more money in people’s pockets and that investors should assist government in alleviating poverty in the country.

He said over 500 tobacco farmers that included women have spent over five days in the cold waiting for the JTI accountant to pay them but to no avail .

The Japanese company was supposed to pay 2,125 farmers in the district but only 20 farmers have received their money as of last week Monday.

Mr Musangu complained that already rains have started and they were supposed to start cultivating their fields but they were still queuing to receive their dues of tobacco which they supplied to JTI in the 2011/2012 farming season.

And district commissioner, Joster Manjolo has urged the farmers to be patient as government is seriously looking into their plight.

He said his office will not tolerate a situation where farmers were being mistreated by investors instead of assisting them in any way possible.

A visibly annoyed Mr Manjolo urged the tobacco farmers to remain calm as government does will not allow a situation where the farmers will be subjected to suffering working hard to produce crops such as tobacco.

The district commissioner has however taken up the challenge of feeding the farmers from distant villages and that no one should go back to their villages until JTI met its obligations.

Minister blames banks for delay in paying farmers

Agriculture minister Emmanuel Chenda
Agriculture minister Emmanuel Chenda

Agriculture and Livestock minister Emmanuel Chenda says he is disappointed at the failure by some commercial banks in the country to pay small scale farmers for the maize they have supplied to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA).

Speaking in Chinsali yesterday during the 48th Independence Anniversary celebrations held at the Presidents Park, celebrated under the theme “ Celebrating 48 years of independence with vision, hard work and unity” Mr.Chenda said it is not good to see farmers failing to get their money from the banks when the Government has already released the funds.

Mr. Chenda said he will follow up the matter when he returns to Lusaka and ensure that all the commercial banks in the country, through which small scale farmers are getting their money, pays the farmers what belongs to them.

Mr. Chenda told people from all walks of life and opposition political parties who turned up to celebrate the 48th Independence anniversary, that the Government is committed to ensure that it purchases all the maize from the small scale farmers by October 31.

And Mr. Chenda has said that the gallant sons and daughters of Chinsali, the likes of Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda, late Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe, Robert Kapasa Makasa and many others paid the ultimate price for the peace being enjoyed today .

He said the freedom fighters were motivated because they had a vision adding that they worked hard with unity of purpose.

Meanwhile, Mama Salome Chilufya Kapwepwe, 85, wife to gallant freedom fighter late Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe and Mwansa Bamba, 85, were among old men and women who received certificates of recognition and appreciation for their role in the liberation struggle.

Sakeni urges opposition leaders planning to block the budget to be patriotic

Chief Government Spokesperson, Kennedy Sakeni
Chief Government Spokesperson, Kennedy Sakeni

Chief Government spokesperson Kennedy Sakeni has implored opposition political leaders that have vowed to frustrate the approval of the 2013 National Budget in parliament to be patriots.

Mr. Sakeni who is also Information and Broadcasting Services Minister said it is unthinkable for any political party worth its salt to advocate for politics that that do not add value to improving the wellbeing of ordinary Zambians.

He was reacting to recent pronouncements from the opposition MMD leaders that have vowed not to support the 2013 budget citing the appointment of some of its Members of Parliament as deputy ministers in the PF government.

Despite President Michael Sata’s clarification of the appointments as part of his desire to run an all inclusive government, this move has not gone well with the MMD party leadership who feel it is meant to weaken the party.

ZANIS reports that Mr. Sakeni pointed out that the PF government recognises the opposition parties as stakeholders in national development but should behaviour in a manner that will inspire Zambians.

He explained that government will remain steadfast in ensuring that its development plans are executed as outlined in its party manifesto to the satisfaction of Zambians.

Mr. Sakeni reiterated that the government is on course in implementing polices that will translate into tangible reduction of poverty, unemployment, underdevelopment and economic challenges that ordinary Zambians are facing.

He urged Zambians to unite and work hard in assisting government in developing the country for the betterment of all Zambians regardless of tribal groupings.

Updated With Table: Power Dynamos Back in League Race

12

Defending FAZ Super Division champions Power Dynamos are firmly back in the title race after beating Zesco United today.

Power defeated Zesco 1-0 away at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium to move within one point of leader’s Zanaco.

A 57th minute goal from midfielder Emmanuel Chimpinde via a spectacular bicycle kick settled this hotly contested Copperbelt derby in Ndola.

However, Power were fortune to come away with the three points despite dominating Zesco led by Mukuka Mulenga who was outstanding in midfield for the visitors on Independence Day.

Just three minutes before Power took the lead, Zesco won a penalty after Billy Imonda clashed with Simon Silwimba in the box.

Referee Jan Sikazwe saw it otherwise and pointed to the spot.

Zesco goalkeeper Jacob Banda then attempted to do a Kennedy Mweene but ballooned the spot-kick.

Power now have to 53 points, one less than Zanaco with three games to go before the close of the 2012 season.

Zesco stand still in third place on 49 points.

Lusaka province minister Colonel Gerry Chanda has described the move by some opposition leaders to shun this year’s independence celebrations as childish.

Colonel Chanda says it is sad to see individuals aspiring to lead the country not respecting the current office holder who was put in office by the people of Zambia.

He says some leaders of the opposition have just proved to the citizens that they do not deserve to be leaders of this country because they do not respect the choice and decisions that the citizens make.

Speaking in an interview, Colonel Chanda says it is now a clear indication that some politicians only want to ascend to power for selfish motives and not to serve the nations.

He states that what the opposition has done is not just an insult to the people of Zambia but to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the country to enjoy the freedom it is currently enjoying.

Colonel Chanda says it is wrong for any opposition leaders to justify their action by claiming that the PF whilst in opposition was also shunning state functions.

Colonel Chanda defended his party by stating that the PF was not shunning the functions deliberately but due to non invitation.

And India has wished Zambia the best as it celebrates its 48th independence anniversary today.

Indian high commissioner to Zambia Ashok Kumar says India is happy to see that the country has continues to enjoy its peace and tranquility.

Mr. Kumar says India continues to enjoy the friendly and historic relationship that exists between the two countries.

Speaking to QFM, Mr. Kumar says India looks forward to a continued partnership for the mutual benefit of the two countries.

Zambia today celebrates its 48th independence anniversary under the theme: “Celebrating 48 years of Independence with vision, hard work and unity.

Meanwhile, The Freedom Fighters and Democracy Association of Zambia (FFDAZ) has called for incorporation of issues that affect its members in the current constitution.

Eastern Province Chairperson, Frank Banda, said freedom fighters want to see their submissions included in the new constitution.

He was speaking at this year’s Independence celebrations held at David Kaunda stadium in Chipata today.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Geofrey Mwamba who officiated at the same occasion, said Zambia has achieved great unity since independence in 1964.

And Mr. Banda said the new constitution should include the recognition of freedom fighters and their families affairs by way of providing for them even after death.

Mr. Banda also called for the introduction of a syllabus at primary school level to teach pupils on the struggle for the Independence of the country.

The Former freedom fighter also advocated for the freedom fighters to participate in good governance.

‘’ We need to be nominated as Members of Parliament and also councillors in the wards,’’ Mr. Banda said.

And Mr. Mwamba however noted that though independence was realised over 40 years ago, most people were still living in abject poverty.

He said he was however glad to note that the Patriotic Front government was implementing policies and programmes to reduce poverty.

Mr. Mwamba observed that there was need for a lot of sacrifice by all well meaning Zambians to successfully achieve government’s vision.

‘’ Zambia is endowed with a lot of natural resources which we must utilise to develop this nation. We all need to unite because unity is cardinal in any meaningful development programme,’’ he said.

Mr. Mwamba said Zambians should put aside their political differences and move forward for their common goal.

‘’ There should be self denial and self sacrifice because government is in a hurry to address pertinent issues in sectors such as education and health among others,’’ he noted.

This year’s independence celebrations theme is celebrating 48 years of independence with vision, hard work and unity.

Freedom statue “chain man” relieves ordeal

Zanco Mpundu Mutembo
Zanco Mpundu Mutembo

Political struggle National Youth Chairperson Zanco Mpundu Mutembo has hailed Zambians for maintaining peace and unity after liberating from the British rule in 1964.

Mr. Mutembo who broke the chains during the struggle for the country independence says he is happy that the country has remained united and peaceful and urged Zambians to treasure what freedom fighters died for.

He said as a freedom fighter himself, it pleases him to see Zambians walk up and about freely without being restricted which he said was what him and his fellow youths then fought for.

He explained that he was arrested and handcuffed with chains which he broke in the presence of 18 soldiers armed with guns.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS at State house today Mr. Mutembo narrated that he was ordered to break free from the chains or be instantly shot dead.

Shockingly, he broke the chains in full view of soldiers and photographers who took shots of what seem like magical power.

He explained that all that happened at the force Headquarters where he was first interviewed on his involvement and influence in the struggle before he was subjected to chain punishment.

Mr. Mutembo who became emotional when he was narrating his ordeal , explained that the soldiers were amazed how the chain broke just like some people today do not believe that it was a real chain.

He however admitted that it was really hard for him but he managed to pull hard and the chain napped and the governor raised his hands in surprise.

Mpundu Mutembo got involved in the political struggle against the colonialists in their village in Northern Province at the age of 18 in 1954.

He rose to the position of National Youth Chairperson for the political struggle.

Mr. Mutembo is now a national symbol as his statue has been displayed as a freedom statue along Independence Avenue in Lusaka where the laying of wreaths takes place every Independence Day in memory of the fore-fathers who died during the struggle.
