Senior Chief Kopa tells Post Newspaper to apologise

28

Senior Chief Kopa of the Bisa people has dismissed as malicious and a total fabrication a Post Newspaper story in Saturday’s edition in which he was quoted as endorsing Patriotic Front leader Michael Sata’s candidature.

The traditional leader has since demanded an apology from the daily tabloid.

Senior Chief Kopa says contrary to the Post Newspaper story, he and the entire Chiefdom are solidly behind the leadership of President Rupiah Banda.

He told ZNBC News at his palace that the Kopa chiefdom is morally bound to support President Banda because he has done his best to develop Mpika District and the entire country.

The chief says the Newspaper article was intended to frustrate government’s efforts of concluding the various projects while fanning hostility between President Banda and the people of Kopa chiefdom.

Senior Chief Kopa says he is deeply disturbed that the visit by three senior PF officials at his palace has been cast in bad light through a false story linking him to the PF and Mr Sata.

And Senior Chief Kopa has advised politicians visiting chiefdoms ahead of the September 20, tripartite elections to do so without ill or hidden motives bordering on selfish political opportunism.

According a Saturday’s Post Newspaper article, Senior Chief Kopa is reported to have said the country needs a change of government so that people can experience Mr Sata’s leadership.

The traditional leader was alleged to have issued the remarks when senior PF members Mbita Chitala, Panji Kaunda and Bob Sichinga called on him at his Palace on Thursday.

Mpombo is a failed politician

28
Kafulafuta Member of Parliament George Mpombo

DIE Hard for RB and the MMD Team national coordinator Bowman Lusambo has said former Kafulafuta Member of Parliament (MP) George Mpombo is a failed politician who is not fit to attack president Rupiah Banda.

Mr Lusambo said Mr Mpombo had nothing to offer the people of Zambia and therefore should desist from unnecessarily attacking President Banda who was working hard to better the lives of ordinary Zambians.

He said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that at the time Mr Mpombo served as Kafulafuta MP and Cabinet minister, he failed the people in the area by only concentrating on his personal businesses.

“Mr Mpombo has nothing to offer the people of Zambia. He is a traitor who has failed the people of Lambaland. He should desist from attacking President Banda as he has proved to be a failure,” he said.

And Mr Lusambo also urged former Roan Member of Parliament Chishimba Kambwili to equally tone down on his unwarranted attacks against President Banda.

He said Mr Kambwili was in the forefront condemning Chinese investments when in fact he was a beneficiary from the same investment. He said Mr Kambwili was a supplier to Luanshya Copper Mine (LCM) but he was always condemning the same investors.

Mr Lusambo said Mr Kambwili was now panicking because the MMD had fielded a credible and popular candidate in the name of Goodwell Mulubwa for Roan Constituency.

Meanwhile, 85 United Party for National Development (UPND) members in Nakambala ward in Mazabuka on Saturday defected to the MMD. The 85 defected to the MMD when the Die Hard for RB and the MMD Team addressed a rally at Katombora grounds.

Mr Lusambo said the defectors cited president Banda’s passion to develop Zambia as the reason for joining the ruling party. He said the people of Southern Province had realised that it was not paying for them to hang on to the opposition political party but that they too should work with the ruling party to enhance development in the area.

He urged the people of Mazabuka to vote for MMD’s Maxwell Mwiinga who was a resident of that town for Mazabuka Central constituency seat. Mr Lusambo also urged youths not to be used as tools of violence but rather advocate for peaceful campaigns. Mr Lusambo urged UPND’s Hakainde Hichilerma and PF’s Michael Sata to emulate president Banda’s call for peace whenever he addressed his rallies.

He said president Banda had shown consistence in the manner in which he urged all Zambians to remain united and peaceful as the country goes to the polls on September 20.

Hichilema promises to transform Luapula’s vast mineral resources

29

UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema has promised to transform Luapula’s vast mineral resources into tangible wealth for the people if elected as Republican president.

Mr Hichilema during a campaign rally at Muchinka Basic School grounds in Mansa on Saturday that Luapula Province was endowed with many minerals and other natural resources which should be tapped to improve the people’s standards of living.

“Land, water and minerals resources which God has given you the people of Luapula is wealth. Zambia is too rich but the problem which we have as a country is caused by our leaders,” he said.

Mr Hichilema said during the rally, which was also attended by some European Union (EU) election observers, that he would reintroduce windfall tax for the mining sector in order to maximise the country’s gains form its mineral resources.

He said windfall tax would attract K800 billion for the country annually. “Part of the K800 billion would be used to pay public workers a minimum salary of K5 million per month,” he said.

Mr Hichilima, who earlier in the day addressed a campaign rally in Samfya District, said he was confident of winning the September 20 presidential elections and reminded the electorate to fulfill their promise to vote for him in the 2011 polls.

“During the 2008 presidential by- elections the people of Zambia told us the UPND that they would vote for me as president after allowing Mr Rupiah Banda to complete late president Levy Mwanawasa’s term of three years.

“I have great respect for [Mr] Rupiah Banda and [Mr] Michael Sata but the two leaders have run their course,” he said.

During the rally which attracted a sizable crowd, Mr Hichilema also introduced his party’s parliamentary candidate for Chembe and Bangweulu constituencies, Arthur Mofya and Catherine Kabaso, respectively.

Some local government election aspiring candidates for various wards in Mansa were also introduced. The UPND president is accompanied by some members of the National Management Committee.

Mr Hichilema was today expected to address rallies in Mwense and Mambilima constituencies and pay a courtesy call on senior chiefs Mwata Kazembe and Lukwesa before he concludes his tour of Luapula Province.

Patriotic front president Michael Sata has described Movement for multi party democracy MMD President Rupiah Banda as a big crook.

Mr. Sata says that president Banda wants to get credit for the initiatives that he has not initiated.

He says that president Banda should not cheat Zambians that most initiatives are a brain child of his presidency.

Mr.Sata speaking at a rally in Masaiti Boma to drum up support for his presidency and the aspiring parliamentary candidates ahead of the 2011 elections, says that it is surprising that president Banda wants to get credit for the things he has not worked for.

Mr. Sata cites the issue of Ndola stadium and other developmental projects that have been initiated by late president Levy Mwanawasa, to which Mr. Banda wants to get credit.

The patriotic front president further stated that president Rupiah Banda has tolerated investors who are running mines in the country.

Mr. Sata alleges that because of corruption, most companies running the mines do not respect the Zambian workers.

And Patriotic Front Munali aspiring parliamentary candidate Nkandu Luo Nkandu Luo has doubted Zambia’s chances of having free and fair elections.

Prof.Luo says that president Rupiah Banda is so desperate to the point that he is intimidating every Zambian.

In an exclusive interview with QFM radio, she stated that the MMD has failed to provide level playing field for all the political parties.

Ex Zamsure Star Joel Kabemba Dies

7

Ex Zamsure goal machine Joel Kambemba is dead.

According to local media reports, Kambemba died on Friday at his home in Mtendere compound in Lusaka after a short illness.

The DR Congo born striker was one of the most feared and prolific players in the league during his time at Zamsure from the time he joined “Tamanga” in 1998 until they were demoted in 2002.

Zamsure “Tamanga” never returned to top flight football and were eventually disbanded three seasons ago.

Kabemba was until the time of his death coaching Division 1 South club Lusaka Tigers and also had a previous stint as assistant coach at Lusaka Dynamos.

Burial arrangements have yet to be announced.

Blades Cut Zesco’s Power Supply

6

Zesco United’s grip on the Faz Super Division crown is looking very questionable after Konkola Blades on Sunday recorded back-to-back league wins this season over them.

Blades beat visiting Zesco 2-0 at Konkola Stadium in Chililabombwe to extend their unbeaten league run against the latter to five games going back to 2009.

The victory also saw Keagan Mumba’s side move from sixth to third on the Super Division table to 38 points, three less than leaders Power Dynamos and second placed Red Arrows.

Meanwhile, Blades secured their second successive victory over Zesco this season thanks to goals from Martin Daka and Elson Mkandawire in the 28th and 88th minutes.

Zesco’s defeat sees them fall from fifth to sixth on 35 points from 22 games with eight games remaining before the 2011 campaign comes to a close.

MMD to resolve differences with Chieftainess Nkomeshya after polls

49
Senior Chief Nkomeshya

MMD deputy national secretary Chembe Nyangu has said that the MMD will sit down with Chieftainess Nkomesha after the elections to see how best the two can resolve their differences.

Mr. Nyangu said that if what is being reported in the POST Newspapers is true, the party will see were they went wrong for reconciliation.

In an interview with QFM, Mr. Nyangu though stated that he is not in a better position to comment on the matter as he is still studying it.

He however said that even though it was Chieftainess Nkomesha’s democratic right to belong to any political party of her choice, she should not intimidate her subjects by threatening them on who they should support.

Mr. Nyangu said that her followers also have a democratic right to support whoever they choose to support.

And Former Movement for Multi party Democracy (MMD) chairman for elections Mike Mulongoti has said that it was shameful that Republican President Rupiah Banda could attack Chieftainess Nkomeshya in public.

Mr. Mulongoti said that this showed that the MMD presidential candidate has no respect for the elderly in the country.

Mr. Mulongoti wondered why he had vented his anger on the two women of Chongwe district because of the difference in political opinion.

He said that immediate past Member of Parliament Sylvia Masebo and Chieftainess Nkomeshya do not deserve to be hated by the president because they are opposed to his leadership.

Mr. Mulongoti said that president Banda should accept that he has lost support in the country, stating that time for the MMD to leave office has come.

Mr. Mulongoti explained to QFM radio that intimidation and threats the president has engaged in will not help the party win this years elections.

He has further advised Ms. Masebo and the Chieftainess to remain firm, and not to be threatened by the MMD leadership who are desperate to retain power.

Injury K’Os Felix Katongo

0

Green Buffaloes striker Felix Katongo is out of action due to injury.

The Buffaloes guest player missed Saturdays 0-0 home draw against Power Dynamos in a Faz Super Division Week 22 game played at Woodlands Stadium.

“Felix Katongo got injured last weekend when we played Red Arrows,” Buffaloes coach Justin Chinama said.

“He got a knock on the ankle that’s why he wasn’t with us today (Saturday). He was out for one week and medical staff will advise tomorrow if he can return to action.”

In that match against Arrows, Buffaloes lost 2-1 at Nkoloma Stadium.

Katongo is a guest player at Buffaloes after terminating his contract with Libyan club Al Ittihad at the height of the armed conflict in that country in February.

Unosolicted campaigns SMSs are International

26

The Zambia Information and Communications Technology Council -ZICTA says unsolicitated voice and text messages by some political parties, are coming from international circuits and not from the three mobile phone operators.

ZICTA Public Relations Manager Ngabo Nankonde says the voice call recording is machine generated and is coming from an international circuit.

Ms Nankonde has also told ZNBC News that text messages are originating from a masked number which is not allocated or being used by any of the three mobile operators.

She says none of the mobile phone providers in the country has given access to their subscriber call records to any of the political parties.

ZICTA has recently received complaints from members of the public that they are receiving unsolicited calls and text messages from some political parties.

I will not work with dull leaders – RB

Flashback: MMD candidate rupiah Banda and his wife Thandiwe chanting party slogans before he addressed the last campaign rally

President Rupiah Banda says some political parties are questioning the electoral process in the hope of advancing for a government of national unity.

And President Banda says he will therefore not accept to form a government of National Unity with any dull political Party leaders.

Mr Banda says some political parties know that they will not form government and want to confuse the Zambian people by questioning the electoral process.

He says those questioning the electoral process know that this year’s elections will be free and fair but still want to champion violence, in the hope of forming a government of National unity.

The President has called on all politicians taking part in the September 20 general elections, to work hard and let the people decide what they want.

Mr Banda has urged Zambians to denounce violence during the election period and only encourage peaceful polls.

He was speaking when he addressed a meeting for government heads of departments, the business community and the clergy in Livingstone on Saturday.

Mr. Banda asked people of Livingstone to vote for him and other MMD candidates in order to continue with the unprecedented development that the country has recorded.

And MMD National Secretary Major Richard Kachingwe urged workers in the country to scrutinise the Patriotic Front manifesto.

He says the PF Manifesto may not mean well to workers because it clearly states that civil servants will be headed by party cadres instead of technocrats.

He says the PF also PF plans to nationalize all the industries once it comes into power.

He further says the business community will risk bringing back socialism if they voted for the PF.

And former Parliamentary Chief Whip Vernon Mwaanga has called on all peace loving Zambians to guard jealously the peace that the country is enjoying.

He says Zambia has become the envy of the outside world because of president Rupiah Banda’s sound economic policies and the peace that it enjoys.

Mr Mwaanga says with the participation of the civil servants and the business fraternity the country’s economy has continued to grow.

And United Liberal party president Sakwiba Sikota says president Banda deserves another term in office because he has delivered on his 2008 campaign promises.

The Bridge to Your Breakthrough

17

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, yet I will rejoice in the Lord! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation!”
(Habakkuk 3:17–18, NLT)

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria

Habakkuk knew what to do when things seemed completely hopeless. His world was literally falling apart around Him. There was destruction everywhere he looked. But Habakkuk knew that God was bigger than his circumstances! So what did he do? He invited God into his circumstances by rejoicing and praising the Lord. He made the choice to be joyful knowing that it would connect him to the One who would deliver him!

Are you facing a situation that seems dark or hopeless? No matter how difficult things may seem, God has a plan to bring you out into a place of victory. Your praise is the bridge that will carry you into your land of promise. The Bible tells us that God inhabits the praises of His people, and when the presence of God manifests, the enemy has to flee! The Bible also tells us that there is fullness of joy in His presence. His joy empowers us to walk through any difficulty we may be facing. No matter how things may seem in the natural, you can rejoice today because God is working behind the scenes on your behalf. As you praise Him, He will fill you with His joy and pour out His abundant blessing in every area of your life.

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father in heaven, I come to You trusting that You are my deliverer. No matter what is going on around me, today I choose to bless and praise Your name. I choose to connect to You, knowing that You are the source of my strength, hope and peace. In Jesus’ name, amen.
