Rupiah’s reluctance in announcing elections date questioned.

The Non Governmental Organization Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has wondered why President Rupiah Banda is reluctant to announce the election date when the Electoral Commission of Zambia has stated that the voter register will be ready on the 31st of July, 2011.

NGOCC Board Chairperson Beatrice Grillo says the delay in announcing the date of elections is causing unnecessary anxiety in the country.

Mrs. Grillo says it is either the president announces the date of the elections or the ECZ states that it is not yet ready to avoid unnecessary misunderstandings.

Speaking to QFM, Mrs. Grillo observed that early announcement of the election date will help create a levelled playing field for all players in the preparation of the forthcoming general election.

The NGOCC Board Chairperson has since appealed to Republican president Rupiah Banda to announce the election date on take for people to plan well.

Last week President Rupiah Banda appealed to Zambians, especially politicians, to exercise patience and allow the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and other institutions involved in organising elections to carry out their duties without undue pressure.

Mr Banda said that announcing the date of elections was done in consultation with all key stakeholders, especially ECZ that was mandated to run elections in Zambia.

President Banda further said ECZ had not yet compiled the final voters’ roll following the verification exercise which ended on June 12, 2011 and all mistakes had since been corrected.

The president reiterated that he would only announce the date for the presidential, parliamentary and local government elections once all logistics were in place.

Interview with cinematographer Paul Kabungo

        PAUL Kabungo

Paul Kabungo is an upcoming film maker who specializes in cinematography. He entered into the media world 3 years ago in South Africa , working at Mnet/Supersport. He started his in house training there and was part of the  crew on a number of projects including: big brother Africa 3 (Endemol for Mnet), survivor S.A, S.A idols 3 (Fremantle media for Mnet), Carte blanche (Active blue for Mnet), deal or no deal , super diski (super sport 4), nedbank golf challenge (super sport 1), and some concerts for international artists like ; Keri Hilson, John Legend, Bow wow, the killers, and many more.

Last year he got a scholarship to study film in Europe , that’s where he started to specialize in cinematography. He also took a few photography lessons both on film and DSLRs.

He is currently working at Meanwood communications as head of productions/resident photographer.

KAPA187: What first interested you in film making and cinematography?

PAUL Kabungo: I think it started when I was about 10years old. I was always fascinated with cameras. When I went to South Africa to study IT, I decided to explore this career more seriously.

KAPA187: How was the experience of being on the crew for a number of of shows for Mnet, such as Survivor SA, Big brother 3? How did you get the opportunity?

PAUL Kabungo: The experience was great, especially on Big Brother because they usually get students and interns as crew. It’s a very good platform to practice what you learn either at school or as an intern at work. The opportunity came about because I was an intern at Mnet and a company owned by Mnet. The people who assemble the crew for these shows give priority to in house staff then freelancers.

KAPA187: What are the pros and cons of being a cinematographer? Please be specific.

PAUL Kabungo: Cinematography is the art or technique of using a motion-picture or digital camera. This art includes camera type and support equipment choices e.g. dollies, cranes, steadycams, lens choices, filters etc. Basically a Cinematographer executes what the Director sees aesthetically. While the Director is artistic, the Cinematographer is technical.

Some of the pros are that you get to dictate and bully all departments on the film set, hahahaha. Seriously all departments on the film set must confirm with the Cinematographer also known as the Director of Photography (DoP) before an idea is locked and executed.

The con of this job in Africa is we don’t have all the equipment needed to execute what the scripts of the films we shoot require. This can be very frustrating and if one is not flexible and is not good with improvising, the whole movie project can be a sham!

KAPA187: If you weren’t a cinematographer, what would you want to be? Why?

PAUL Kabungo: In the filming industry if I wasn’t a cinematographer then I’d have been an editor. Because editing is the closest and second most technical department *BIG SMILE* Otherwise away from the film world I’d have been a Computer Programmer.

KAPA187: What type of training have you had?

PAUL Kabungo: I have a Diploma in Legal Studies from University of London, an Advanced Diploma in Computer Science ABMA and a Diploma in Media and Film Studies from Finland.

KAPA187: Describe your typical day on the job

PAUL Kabungo : Am currently the Head of Video Productions/Photographer at Meanwood Communications. My typical day requires me to plan, schedule and carry out shoots, both photo and video.

KAPA187: Would you recommend this career to someone else? And what traits do you feel are necessary for the job.

PAUL Kabungo: Yeah, most definitely I would. It’s a very interesting career. Most productions done in Zambia luck a cinematographer’s touch, we need more of us *smiles*

To be a good cinematographer one has to be very focused, ready to listen and flexible, must know how to communicate without offending others, and must have a heart to endure (some shoots can be very frustrating). Having a good understanding on Lighting and Photos is a very big plus because there is a very thin line between Photography and Cinematography.

Kapa187: What has been the highlight of your career?

PAUL Kabungo: Too many to single out, but maybe when I was given to operate the crane (jimmy job) camera at a concert for American artists.

KAPA187: Do you feel you have a signature visual style to your work?

PAUL Kabungo: Yeah very much! In-as-much-as we listen and execute Director’s visions, we always leave footprints of our style on films. Am a fan of high contrasts and dynamics. Am also a fan of Low key lighting because DRAMA is my preference genre.

KAPA187:  What projects are you currently working on

PAUL Kabungo: Am working on 3 documentaries; Cardiac Trust of Zambia, Electro Commission of Zambia and one on Zambian DJs.

Am doing adverts for ECZ, Engen Filling Station, Uniturtle, Portico and ZESCO.

Am working on a music video for Slim Tim (hip hop artist). Am also scheduled to shoot music videos for Macky II, Karasa, Alpha Romeo, Damian AKA Nameless and Nick Pro.

Am doing a Black n White photo series to be exhibited at Alliance Fransaise. Am left with 3 female models 🙂

KAPA187:  Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

PAUL Kabungo: In five years time I would have bought most of the necessary equipment needed to shoot decent productions, and I’d be running my media company fulltime… The sky is the Limit.

 SAMPLE OF HIS WORK

BLACK N WHITE:  these Photos are of models as well as photos from music video shoots. These photos and more can be seen at Aliance Francaise.

Arrows Toil For Top Spot In Six-Goal Thriller

0

Red Arrows returned to the top of the Faz Super Division table after drawing 3-3 with Nkwazi in a pulsating Week 14 game that produced some quality goals played at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka today.

Arrows move one notch up the table on 29 points ending Power Dynamos 24 hour reign.

The draw was the fifth in succession between the two teams in the Super division since 2008 when Nkwazi got the better of Arrows at the same venue with a 1-0 win there.

Arrows today took the lead in the 18th minute through Bruce Musakanya who tapped in a loose ball from close range to beat Nkwazi goalkeeper Maybin Phiri.

Nkwazi leveled two minutes later through Derrick Mwansa whose goal acted as a catalyst for the visitors to pressurize their hosts.

The pressure paid off seven minutes later when Kasongo Mwepya put Nkwazi ahead after a flowing one-two move with Jeff Lungu inside the box before the former rounded goalkeeper Medson Luwawa.

Arrows however refused to succumb and on 45 minutes Shadreck Malambo fired in a looping shot from just outside the penalty area to see the sides go even into halftime.

The second half started on a combative note, though, with little in terms of real goal mouth action until the 70th minute when Dube Phiri’s attempt landed on roof of the net.

Five minutes later, Malambo completed his brace as Arrows looked on their way to picking up the three points.

The midfielder could have won the match for Arrows two minutes later had he not been very selfish in search of a hat-trick.

Malambo was robbed of the ball when it was easier to just lay it off for veteran and much-travelled striker Zachariah Simukonda who was unmarked and needed just a simple tap-in from his range.

Nkwazi punished Arrows dead on 90 minutes when Mwansa completed his brace with a tame shot that Luwawa failed to collect for the match to finish fair and even.

I will not attend the family summons- Patrick Mwanawasa

PATRICK MWANAWASA has said he will not attend the family summons over his alleged unpalatable language towards the Republican President.

He denied being disrespectful to the President and said he called him arrogant, which the President himself had admitted he was, and warned that such an arrogant attitude was similar to former Ivory Coast President Laurent Ggagbo who had to be unceremoniously removed from power after refusing to concede defeat.

Patric has also castigated the government for reversing the strong vision his late father had about fighting corruption. The President was recently quoted at the Trade Fair in Ndola as having said there was no corruption in Zambia. Most people have also seen the removal of the Abuse of Public Office clause from the laws on corruption as a step backwards in the fight against corruption.

Patrick also said he would not be cowed in his political campaign agaist the MMD.

Yesterday the Mwanawasa family has summoned Patrick Mwanawasa, over disparaging remarks he has been issuing against President Banda. His uncle, Moses Muteteka told the media that the family would like to counsel him because the statements he was making are not only demeaning the President, but embarrassing the family too.

Mr Muteteka further said that the statements coming from Patrick were too strong and inconsistent with the Mwanawasa family which is known to be disciplined and well-cultured. Mr Mutetaka further lamented that Patrick could be playing to the tune of the Patriotic Front (PF) which wants to use his name to discredit President Banda’s government.

“We have summoned him (Patrick). I asked him to come and see me immediately he arrives from Chipata. We are concerned with the statements said to be coming from him because they are quite strong. Imagine how can a young man tell President Banda that ‘you can’t bring me down’,” Mr Muteteka said.

He said the family meeting is not meant to infringe on Patrick’s right to belong to a political party of his choice, but to counsel him to respect elders in his political career.

He said it was clear that Patrick was being used by the PF because the language attributed to him is similar to that which PF president Michael Sata had been using against former President Mwanawasa.

THE Mwanawasa family has summoned Patrick Mwanawasa, son of the late former republican president, over disparaging remarks he has been issuing against President Banda.

Uncle of Patrick, Moses Muteteka, told the Sunday Mail in an interview yesterday that the family would like to counsel him because the statements he was making are not only demeaning the President, but embarrassing the family too.

Mr Muteteka, who is Deputy Minister of Local Government and Housing, said the statements coming from Patrick are too strong and inconsistent with the Mwanawasa family which is known to be disciplined and well-cultured.

He lamented that Patrick could be playing to the tune of the Patriotic Front (PF) which wants to use his name to discredit President Banda’s government.

“We have summoned him (Patrick). I asked him to come and see me immediately he arrives from Chipata. We are concerned with the statements said to be coming from him because they are quite strong. Imagine how can a young man tell President Banda that ‘you can’t bring me down’,” Mr Muteteka said.

He said it is clear that Patrick is being used by the PF because the language attributed to him is similar to that which PF president Michael Sata had been using against former President Mwanawasa.

Mr Muteteka said politicians and the media using the late president’s son must know that it is unfair to engage a young man in their own battles.

He said the family meeting is not meant to infringe on Patrick’s right to belong to a political party of his choice, but to counsel him to respect elders in his political career.

Mr Muteteka, who is also MMD national youth chairperson, said although Patrick did not consult the family before joining the PF, they respect his democratic right to belong to any political party.

He said as a person who served in the Mwanawasa government for five years, he is sure that if Dr Mwanawasa were alive, he would not be happy with media statements attributed to his son.

Mr Muteteka urged members of the public and MMD youths who are aggrieved with Patrick’s outbursts to exercise patience until he has been counselled by the family.

“The cadres who have issued threats to take him on must be patient with him, because it’s clear that there is a hidden voice behind him. And we don’t use that language in our family,” he said.

Efforts to get a comment from Patrick failed as he could not pick up his calls by press time.

Scott, Inonge Wina disrupt the Kazanga traditional ceremony

54
FLASHBACK: Mandevu MP Jean Kapata places a red ribbon on Guy Scott

THE Kazanga Cultural Association yesterday blasted Patriotic Front vice-president and chairperson Inonge Wina for ferrying cadres to the venue of the traditional ceremony.

The association warned the PF leaders against flexing their political muscle at the ceremony, as that would earn them expulsion.

The PF cadres, who were loaded in a Benz truck, stormed the venue of the ceremony and caused consternation with their noise of calling for change.

This infuriated the organisers of the ceremony that was for the first time graced by a senior government official at the level of the vice-president.

Kazanga Cultural Ceremony Association vice-chairman Lyton Kaushiku was forced to summon Dr Scott and Ms Wina who he asked to re-evaluate reasons of attending the ceremony.

Most of the people attending the ceremony were shocked that Dr Scott and Ms Wina could come to the Kazanga ceremony with a motive of dwarfing other political parties.

Mr Kaushiku accosted Dr Scott and Ms Inonge and told them to conduct themselves in a dignified manner because the Kazanga ceremony was not a platform for political messages.

“I advise you that this is a traditional ceremony and not a political assembly. You cannot come here shouting your political slogans here. There are other political parties here but have not come with their slogan. We want peace here and not a situation where you want to create tension. So, this is not the place for showing your popularity,” Mr Kaushiku said.

Mr Kaushiku later ordered all political parties to remove their party attire. He warned that any party that would be seen flashing the party symbol would be given ‘marching orders’.

Dr Scott and Ms Inonge were later allowed inside the arena, but with strict instructions not to politicise the cultural event.

MMD undergoing purification as dark angels leave

43
Defectors: Lameck Mangani (l) and Mike Mlongoti (r)
Defectors: Lameck Mangani (l) and Mike Mlongoti (r)

By Wallen Simwaka

Political party defections just days before elections may not be based on ideological belief, difference or shift. The ruling MMD has witnessed two resignations of its members in the last three weeks but political commentators see these defections from the ruling party as nothing but opportunism.

MIKE Mulongoti, the former Works and Supply Minister, Lameck Mangani, former Works and Supply Deputy Minister, bigoted former Zambian ambassador to Libya Mbita Chitala and their erstwhile MMD Chongwe member of Parliament Sylvia Masebo have left the MMD and are now sloganeering the Patriotic Front (PF) maxim – a boat, evidently sinking.

Their motive has nothing to do with acute ideological differences with the MMD, the party they have over the years used to build their career and financial status, nor has it got anything to do with representing the will of the people they purport to serve.

The quartet in its judgment believes that the PF will form government this year and have played the dice but what they do not realise is that the German theoretical physicist Albert Einstein once cautioned in one of his theories that God does not play such games with lives of his people.

The foursome has purposefully ganged up in a style and manner of the ancient Roman gladiatorial fight to promote aggression, hate and hatred against the MMD and President Banda.

Listening to the quartet makes one realise that the four have suddenly become political purists yet deeply despise President Banda, not for any discernable ideological reason but for having discovered that their failure to colonise the head of State.

For Dr Chitala and Ms Masebo, switching parties has been a cancer they have suffered in decades with the former having left the MMD in 1994 to join the late Dean Mung’omba in the Zambia Democratic Congress (ZADECO) whom he later betrayed.

Ms Masebo’s sense of opportunism is quite high as her record equally shows that she has been very rickety politically having left the MMD to join the Zambia Republican Party (ZRP) of Benjamin Mwila in 2001 and later defecting to the MMD in 2006 when she saw the MMD under late Mwanawasa remaining in government.

After the death of President Mwanawasa, Ms Masebo was among the first to have wedged a malicious campaign against President Banda because she believed former Finance Minister Ng’andu Magande should have been adopted to contest the 2008 presidential elections.

It is ironic, however, that Ms Masebo, who strongly believed Mr Magande should have been president has instead defected to the PF, the political party that she vehemently loathed when President Mwanawasa was alive.

It is only logical to discern that she has joined the PF and not Mr Magande because she hopes that Mr Sata will win the elections this year and would consider her for another job in his government.

She did not stay in the ZRP because the party was in the opposition and all her desires were to be associated with the ruling party.

Mr Mwila, who is ZRP president and Nchelenge member of Parliament has described his former secretary general Masebo as a truant politician who has continued swinging from one political party to other for personal gain.

Mr Mwila said the electorate should be asking Ms Masebo why they should continue voting for her every five years on a different political party.

Mr Mwila said while Ms Masebo has the democratic right to belong to any political party of her choice, she has in her political life been confusing the electorate by changing parties every five years.

Mr Mwila says the electorate should be sensitised to stop believing in persons and following blindly politicians whose characteristics are not predictable.

“Why should the people of Chongwe continue voting for her? She has been changing political parties every five years and that is being truant politically.

Although she has the right to change political parties if she wants, she must not take the electorate for granted. For now, it is up to the people of Chongwe to look at her because it is now looking like it is tribal on her part,” Mr Mwila said.

Vice president George Kunda Chongwe MP Sylvia Masebo (c) and Lusaka district administrative secretary identified as Martha dancing during the Lusaka province MMD dinner dance

He said Ms Masebo has been misleading the people of Chongwe by changing political parties and that her interest is not about serving the communities but to gain her own benefits from the parties she goes.

He stated that Ms Masebo lacked principles by joining the political party that she maligned and slandered ceaselessly when she was in government.

Mr Mwila said the people defecting from the MMD now have openly exhibited naked political opportunism and the electorate should be wondering why they have chosen to leave the ruling party now and not much earlier.

From the beginning, the PF has been indoctrinating its supporters, mostly the youth with its irreverent myth of complete development in all economic sectors punctuating it with the dogma of more money in the pocket and employment for all within 90 days of assuming government.

A decade down the road, the youth have seen through the political dogma and are asking the modus operandi Mr Sata will use to turn Zambia into a paradise within three months.

Mr Mulongoti and his bed fellows Mr Chitala, Kafulafuta member of Parliament George Mpombo and Ms Masebo are currently working hard to negatively compute the economic, social and political successes President Banda has recorded in the world’s shortest time for any president.

For Mr Mulongoti and his friend, Mbita, who changes names as often as he does change political parties and Mpombo, the ascendancy of Mr Sata to power will help them settle whatever scores they have against President Banda.

The obtuse band of the four political charlatans has been going around the countryside telling the people that the MMD government has done nothing, yet just months ago, the same people were eulogising President Banda for his hard work and dedication to national development and reconciliation.

When President Banda was commissioning the construction of the Isoka-Muyombe road, Mr Mulongoti was full of praise for the President describing him as the most dedicated leader who is determined to have Zambia develop.

He is now disparaging the same works he was proud of and this is nothing but out of sour grapes.

Mr Mulongoti has not been subtle in his hatred for President Banda and has openly stated that he has joined the PF so that should the opposition political party form government, he should use it to settle scores against the head of State.

Mr Mulongoti is a bitter man that he was expelled from the ruling party and would want to come back through the PF and get even with President Banda and the MMD.

He has gone to the PF not because he believes in its ideology but because he wants to use the opposition political party to victimise those he now considers his foes.

Mr Mulongoti said he has never been sympathetic about the PF but that he is going to support the party because of personal interests.

“Principles, values and beliefs do not always rhyme with reality and when this happens, you opt to sacrifice these virtues. So sometimes people move from one political party to another to get even…to teach the other a lesson from where you are coming from even if you believe in the agenda. They rejected me and I became an anathema in my own party, so certainly I have issues with them,” Mr Mulongoti was quoted as saying recently.

While in the MMD, the four thought they would succeed in gaining control over President Banda and that he would succumb to their manoeuvres and anoint one of them to be the heir to the presidency but their equation was computed with serious deficiencies which have since exposed their ineptitude.

By and large, President Banda has remained steadfast in serving the country and he has dedicated his time to planning for where next to take development and in what form.

He has also emerged not only as a pacifist in the MMD but also as Zambia’s most successful President who is ready to be disparaged to the length for ‘littering’ the country with economic infrastructure such as roads, schools and hospitals.

In President Banda’s mind, every school, road and hospital around the country is a living organism that represents the economic health of the country.

The political thermometer for the PF and Mr Sata has plunged well below zero and the chances of ever forming government he started proclaiming the demonic doctrine of reverting Zambia to a secular state that would see homosexuals and lesbians enjoy their conjugal rights.

The Southern Africa Centre for Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) has described the recent defection of Ms Masebo and Mr Mangani from the MMD as political opportunism of the worst kind.

SACCORD executive director Lee Habasonda says those who are resigning from the MMD are not serving the interest of the people but their own.

He said in an interview that Ms Masebo and Mr Mangani should give good reasons to the people they purport to represent why they had to wait until days before elections to defect from the MMD.

Mr Habasonda has advised the PF to be cautious with politicians who defect from their political parties just before elections stating that such politicians do so more for opportunism rather than service.

The PF should not be celebrating the resignation of Ms Masebo and Mr Mangani from the MMD because there is nothing ideological about their actions. It is only a question of benefits and this is not good for our political dispensation,” Mr Habasonda said.

He said the defections have cost the country a lot of money that could have been channelled to development programmes such as the construction of schools, hospitals and roads.

Mr Habasonda said Zambia urgently needs a law that would stop politicians who take advantage of the electorate and resign from their parties knowing they would easily be accepted and adopted in their new parties.

He said it is not politically and morally right for Ms Masebo and Mr Mangani to defect from the MMD and then allowed to re-contest their seat on the PF ticket where there are many members of the opposition political party that have been eying the same seat.

“They are abusing the voters. Why have they waited until now to resign from the MMD and then the PF should happily accept them. My advice to the PF is that they should not be celebrating these defections.

It is not the first time Ms Masebo and Mr Mangani have defected from their parties. In fact they should explain why they stayed for so long and decided to defect when elections are near,” Mr Habasonda said.

He explaines that the two pretended that all was well when they were in Government and now that they are out, that is when they want to tell the people how bad the MMD is.

Mr Habasonda said the country should come up with the law that will reduce the incentives of political prostitution among politicians because such behaviour does not add anything to democracy.

The quartet proved to be dark angels in the MMD and there is every reason to believe that at some point, it will refuse to sing along with the PF; what with the hoarse voice of the choirmaster!

Poachers nabbed with 1,275 birds

THE Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) has arrested 13 people in Mongu for allegedly poaching 1,275 birds.

The species of the water birds known as open-billed storks were killed between July 8 and 10 July in the Zambezi Plains.

Western Province Permanent Secretary Seth Muleya and ZAWA public relations officer Wilfred Moonga confirmed the arrest of the 13 suspects that included one female.

Open-billed storks are intra-African migratory species which mostly breed south of the equator, including Zambia.

The migratory species receive total protection, especially during the breeding season.

MrMoonga said the 13 suspects were arrested during a routine monitoring patrol which was conducted by ZAWA officers along the Zambezi Flood Plain last week.

MrMoonga said the suspects were found with 1,275 birds which they captured and killed on Nalwela Island on the Zambezi Plains.

The open-bill stork birds breed but once a year and their gestation period is between the last week of June and the first week of August.

The suspected poachers raid the plains during this period and capture young birds that are just about ready and old enough to take their first fly.

MrMoonga said the poachers know the period when the birds breed and they monitor them closely and when they are just about to fly, usually during the first week of August, the birds are illegally harvested.

MrMoonga said every year, the local people normally monitor nesting sites and raid the nests to capture the immature birds at the time when the young birds develop flight feathers.

He explained that the local people invade the swamps to capture the birds by hand or kill them using spears in the reeds where the breeding water bird colonies roost.

MrMoonga said five out of the 13 suspects have so far been convicted and sentenced to between six and two years in prison.

Poaching of birds, particularly raiding of nests, poses a direct threat to the population of such birds which breed only once in a year.

MrMoonga has appealed to the residents of the Zambezi Flood Plain to desist from the act of raiding the birds’ nests during the breeding season as the act is illegal and cautioned that perpetrators would be arrested and prosecuted.

Masebo is a truant and selfish politician-BY

65
ZAMBIA Republican Party president Benjamin Mwila
ZAMBIA Republican Party president Benjamin Mwila

ZAMBIA Republican Party president Benjamin Mwila has described Chongwe member of Parliament Sylvia Masebo as a truant and selfish politician who should not be voted for.

And Southern Africa Centre for Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) has said the last-minute defections by Ms Masebo and former deputy Minister of Works and Supply Lameck Mangani are acts of opportunism and desperation.

Mr Mwila said while Ms Masebo has the right to change political parties at will, she is being truant by slandering President Banda and the MMD.

Mr Mwila, who is Nchelenge member of Parliament, says his former secretary general has continued swinging from one political party to other for personal gain.

He said time has come for the people of Chongwe to seriously examine the political character before following her to her new party the Patriotic Front.

Mr Mwila said in an interview on Thursday that Ms Masebo is one parliamentarian who has been elected on a different political party every five years.

Mr Mwila advised that the electorate should be asking Ms Masebo why they should continue voting for her every five years on a different political party.

He explained that while Ms Masebo has the democratic right to belong to any political party, she has in her political life been confusing the electorate by changing parties every five years.

Mr Mwila stated that the electorate should be sensitised to stop believing in persons and following them blindly politicians whose characteristics are not predictable.

“Why should the people of Chongwe continue voting for her? She has been changing political parties every five years and that is being truant politically. Although she has the right to change political parties as she wants, it is being truant to subject the electorate to a different political party every five years. She is in fact taking the electorate for granted. For now, it is up to the people of Chingwe to examine her behaviour because now it looks like it is tribal on her part,” Mr Mwila said.

[pullquote]”It does not make sense to wait until days before elections to defect from one political party to another. Ms Masebo and Mr Mangani are serving their own interests rather than those of the people they purport to represent. It is opportunism rather than service and ideological differences. It would appear that these people do not understand why they belong to political parties because one cannot be hopping from one political party to another every five years,” Mr Habasonda said.[/pullquote]

He said Ms Masebo has been misleading the people of Chingwe by changing political parties and that her interest is not about serving the communities but for her own benefits from the parties she goes to.

Ms Masebo won the Chongwe seat in the 2001 general elections on the ZRP ticket but defected to the MMD and retained the seat on the ruling party ticket.

She has since defected from the MMD and is now going to contest the same seat on the PF ticket.

And SACCORD executive director Lee Habasonda says Ms Masebo and Mangani’s resignations from the MMD are not as a result of ideological differences with the ruling party.

Mr Habasonda said it has taken the duo three years to realise that its beliefs are different from what is happening in the MMD.

He said those resigning now should explain to the people why they had to wait until days before elections to defect from the ruling party.

Mr Habasonda said Ms Masebo has been abusing the electorate in Chongwe by jumping from one political party to another.

“It does not make sense to wait until days before elections to defect from one political party to another. Ms Masebo and Mr Mangani are serving their own interests rather than those of the people they purport to represent. It is opportunism rather than service and ideological differences. It would appear that these people do not understand why they belong to political parties because one cannot be hopping from one political party to another every five years,” Mr Habasonda said.

Mr Habasonda advised the PF to be cautious and not celebrate the defections of Ms Masebo and Mr Mangani because the two cannot be trusted.

He said defections have in the past cost the country a lot of money that could have been channelled to other development programmes.

Meanwhile, MUNIDE NYIRENDA reports that MMD Lusaka Province chairman William Banda has advised Chongwe member of Parliament Sylvia Masebo to stop misleading the nation that President Banda hurts her.

Speaking during public rally in Chinkulu ward in Chongwe yesterday, Mr Banda said the people of Chongwe have resolved to reject Ms Masebo through the ballot.

Mr Banda said Ms Masebo’s stance to support the Patriotic Front (PF) is the end of her political career.

He said Ms Masebo will regret joining the Michael Sata’s PF.

“This is the end of her political career, whoever think she is strong, we will show them in the coming elections,” Mr Banda.

He urged Ms Masebo to stop using the name of Chieftainess Nkomesha Mukamambo ll of the Soli people to gain political mileage.

“Masebo claims Chongwe is a no go area, does she know us properly? This game is a game for us who know it,” Mr Banda said.

Look for God’s Favor

12

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you”
(Luke 11:9, NIV)

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria

When you go about your day, are you looking for God’s favor? Do you expect His goodness to overflow? Many people wake up and just believe to make it through the day, but God has so much more in store for you. What He has laid out for your future is more than you can imagine! What He’s got arranged for your family is more than you’ve ever even dreamed of. I believe that if you will take hold of this truth by faith, you will see supernatural doors begin to open. You’ll see promotion like you haven’t seen before!

No matter where you are in life, no matter what’s happening around you, start looking for more of God’s favor. Don’t settle for where you are. Don’t settle for just barely getting by. Believe that God is good, and He wants to do more in and through you. Remember, what you seek, you will find. So seek Him first, and He will pour out His supernatural favor upon you!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Heavenly Father, today I lift my eyes to You for You are the source of my help. I believe that You have good things in store for me, and so I look for Your favor upon my life. Use me today for Your glory as I keep my heart and mind stayed on You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Chadiza Records increase in Dog bites

9

A report released by the Chadiza District Epidemic Preparedness Committee has revealed that more than 40 people have been bitten by dogs in the area in the last three months.

And Stake holders in Chadiza district have expressed concern over the increasing number of people being bitten by dogs in the area.

This is due to a growing population of the dogs in the area which has hit a maximum of about 4,729 pets as per Central Statistics of 2006 report.

The report indicates that out of the 40 people that have been bitten 33 of the victims have been recommended for post exposure vaccinations.

The stake holders in the district epidemic preparedness committee have since called on the department of veterinary to scale up community sensitizations on the dangers of keeping unvaccinated pets.

They expressed sadness that even people in townships who seemed to be educated did not confine their dogs as a result adding to the many cases of dog bites.

The stakeholders have since resolved that the Veterinary department should liaise with the district council and come up with ways to improve management of dogs especially in the township.

But Livestock Officer Daniel Banda, said that his department has intensified the control strategies by conducting rabies awareness campaigns in all veterinary camps and that about 21 dogs have so far been vaccinated while 14 have been destructed.

Zambians urged to examine leaders ahead of polls

0

Deputy Minister of Local Government and Housing Moses Muteteka has advised Zambians to critically examine and differentiate between a good and a bad leader before the forthcoming tripartite elections.

Mr. Muteteka, who is also Chisamba Member of Parliament, says Zambians should vote wisely so that the current social and economic gains are upheld and fostered.

He feared that careless choices for a leader in the 2011 tripartite elections may plunge the country back into high poverty levels which the current government has successfully addressed.

Mr. Muteteka, who is also MMD Youth National Chairman, passionately appealed to Zambians youths to particularly be careful with who they vote for as a president because their choice will help shape their future.

He pointed out that the Zambian youths should help brighten their future by voting for good leaders whose focus was on making Zambia a better country for upcoming generations.

Mr. Muteteka further implored parents not to allow their children to associate themselves with leaders that have history of violence, insults and disrespect.

Mr. Muteteka said Zambians are now able to clearly see which political party leaders have associated themselves with activities of insults, violence, and disrespect for people including chiefs.

Preach Peace Through Music –Maiko Zulu

The Zambia Association of Musicians (ZAM) has appealed to musicians to come up with strategic and meaningful messages that promote peace amongst all political players.

Association National Chairman Maiko Zulu said musicians in the country should preach peace and harmony as the country heads to the general elections.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Solwezi yesterday, Zulu said musicians are custodians of peace who should play a vital role in helping the country maintain the peace it is known and respected for.

He added that musicians should not take peace for granted but that they should be cautious of the power of music in any given society.

He cautioned musicians not to allow politicians to use them as vehicles of promoting hatred and insults in their songs as such can bring chaos.

Meanwhile, Maiko Zulu has called on artists in North-western province to take advantage of the development taking place in the region to enhance themselves.

Zulu said North -Western province and Solwezi in particular is the fastest growing region in the country at the moment and that artists should ensure that development is synonymous with the music industry.

He said this during a meeting with local artists sponsored by the National Arts Council (NAC) in Solwezi yesterday.

Zulu observed that if artists do not grasp the development, other industries will continue to grow while the music industry will lag behind.

He went on to advise artists to realise that music is a business that needs to be taken seriously.

Zulu also called on artists to make use of government departments especially the department of cultural affairs in the Ministry of Community Development because they are there to serve them.

He said only then will musicians appreciate what government has put in place in terms of promoting local talent so that the music industry is improved.

Speaking at the same meeting National Arts Council Director Victor Makashi urged artists to desist from releasing songs that do not add value to society.

Mr. Makashi said artists need to look at society needs and tabulate them if they are to come up with quality products because that is where music is.

He added that this will also help them lay solid foundations because they will communicate things that they know with a passion.

The meeting was the first to be held in the province since the new ZAM National Executive was ushered into office last year.
