FAZ AGM fails to resolve differences as Andrew Kamanga Executive walks out

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) Annual General Meeting held today at Kabwe’s Mulungushi Rock of Authority in Central Province failed to resolve differences with the Andrew Kamanga led Executive Committee walking out of the meeting following the withdrawal of the Vote of No Confidence agenda which was being pushed by the same committee.

The Kamanga led executive was prompted to boycot the meeting after Mazabuka United Chairperson Evans Mushimba withdrew its Vote of No Confidence agenda which was being pushed against the Kalusha Bwalya led Executive.

Reacting to this development, FAZ President Kalusha Bwalay refused to pass the motion of banning Andrew Kamanga abd Simataa Simataa and in the interest of reconciliatio however described the behaviour of the two as uncalled for and warned that if the duo continued with the same behaviour in the next three months they would be subjected to disciplinary action.

In a Live TV broadcast by MUVI Television and monitored by ZANIS in Lusaka today, Bwalya said the AGM was a meeting where matters of policy concerning soccer developments should be resolved and not a platform to castigate one another.

He said Zambia had for a long time held a good history of soccer but wondered why the two and their group were exhibiting such behaviour by walking out of the meeting after the Vote of No Confidence was withdrawn by Mushimba.

Kalusha further urged Andrew Kamanga led Executive to put the interest of players, soccer fans and football first and put personal differences aside and always resort to dialogue.

And FAZ committee member Macha Chilemena described Kalusha Bwalyaa’s action towards the dual as a description of good leadership.

Mr.Chilemena also said people who had moved out of the meeting clearly demonstrated their pure lack of passion for the success of Zambian football.

Speaking at the same meeting, International Football Association (FIFA) Director of Member Association Primo Corvaro said the world soccer governing body and Confederation of African Football (CAF) had been closely following football affairs in Zambia since October last year.

And FIFA Director of Member Associations Primo Covaro, who insisted that the motion be on the agenda, warned that the meeting resolves all contentious issues or possibly face the consequences.

Last night the Andrew Kamanga led executive released a statement saying that they were pleased to announce that a last minute attempt to exclude the vote of no confidence motion using underhand methods at the delayed annual general meeting has been botched.

The interim committee received disturbing news that Mazabuka United, movers of the motion, had been induced to withdraw the item.

An emissary, who is in the police service, was sent to Mazabuka by our colleagues at Football House on Wednesday and met two officials.

According to the statement the official from the dysfunctional FAZ induced some members at Mazabuka United and asked them to withdraw the motion and stay away from the meeting aimed at resolving the crisis in Zambian football.

The two officials at Mazabuka United were told to withdraw the motion on claims that the seconder, Pemba United, had withdrawn its support.

“We wish to categorically state that this is an act of desperation by our colleagues which does not serve the interest of the Zambian people, most important the many sponsors that have invested in it awaiting a smooth administration to take over”, read the statement

“It must be noted that the vote of no confidence motion cannot be withdrawn by anyone, Mazabuka United inclusive, because it became a property of the FAZ council immediately it was seconded and constitutionally approved.”

“We are saddened that having gone through a close to half a year dispute, our colleagues are not ready to end the standoff and would do anything to frustrate an important motion that FIFA has directed must be part of deliberations at the meeting in Kabwe”

“Our caucus held at Chrismar this evening was alerted of activities by our colleagues but resolved to stand firm and ensure the vote of no confidence is tabled.”

“We are happy that FAZ officials from the Copperbelt, Western, Southern, Central and North Western provinces attended the caucus at Chrismar in Lusaka and are resolute in supporting the motion”, the statement concluded.

Ex FAZ member, Violet Bwalya, barred from AGM

There was a near punch up between the chief usher and delegates at the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) Annual General Meeting entrance when former FAZ executive committee member Violet Bwalya was denied entry into the meeting this morning at Mulungushi Rock of Authority in Kabwe.

The confusion ensued when one of the chief ushers asked Bwalya for her affiliation card and which club she belonged to.

In response, Bwalya told the Chief usher that she was life member and did not need a pass or club membership to enter but she was asked to move away.

The usher later told Bwalya that she was causing unnecessary confusion as he had received specific information to filter delegates out of the meeting and he would only allow those who were recognised by superiors.

“I have driven all the way from Ndola as an observer now you are telling me I can’t go in because I am not a club member, that’s nonsense “said Bwalya.

Speaking to ZANIS after being pulled from the feud by some concerned delegates, Bwalya claimed the ushers were merely hired thugs meant to cause confusion.

“Some people’s livelihoods depend on football no wonder they are promoting hooliganism “ Bwalya said.

Violet Bwalya who resigned alongside Pivoty Simwanza, Henschel Chitembeya last year, expressed surprise at the manner the AGM was organised by FAZ.

Others barred from entering were Mansa Football Club Secretary Josam Siamambo, Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) Kabwe based journalists and other designated delegates.

MMD calls for law to deter ex Ministers from oath flouting

An official in the ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) has appealed to President Rupiah Banda to ensure enactment of a law that will deter former Cabinet Ministers from breaking oath when fired from Government.

Lusaka Constituency Chairperson Chilekwa Munkonge made the appeal saying the move will bring sanity to both MMD and Government.

Mr Mukonge also condemned politics of insults that were being perpetrated by some former Cabinet Ministers against President Banda.

In an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today, he also assured the President of 100 percent votes in this year’s elections sayng the opposition had nothing to offer.

The current Zambian Constitution stipulates oath of allegiance taken by every member of the National Assembly before taking their seat and they subscribe to it.

President Rupiah Banda has challenged Patriotic Front leader Michael Sata not to contest in this year’s presidential elections if he is convinced that the elections will be rigged as he has been telling the people.

Speaking when he addressed hundreds of people who gathered at Solwezi Trades Training Institute to witness the official opening of phase one of the institution which has cost Government K3.4 billion to build, Mr Banda said it will be a waste of time for the PF leader to contest the election which he knows will not be credible.

ZANIS reports that the President however said, contrary to what Mr Sata and his sympathisers were saying, his Government was determined to ensure that the elections are free and fair so that the results will be acceptable to all the people of Zambia as well as the international community.

“ I wish to advise Mr Sata to sit back In his house and cry because he knows that he has already lost the election,” President Banda said.

He told the ululating crowd that he was sure of victory and that this time around, he will beat Mr Sata with a wider margin than was the case in the 2008 by election.

He said Mr Sata will this year break a record for being Zambia’s presidential candidate who stood four times and lost.

The President said he will not relent to help the less privileged people in society just because the country will be going to the polls this year adding that he will stand by the wishes of the people of Zambia because that is the only way the country would develop.

The President told the people to refuse to be told lies by those that are retrogressive minded but that they should instead work with Government in order that more meaningful development could be achieved in the nation.

Later, the President received scores of people who defected from their various political parties mostly United Party for National Development (UPND) and the PF to join the MMD .

The President who has been in Solwezi since yesterday, was accompanied by former Vice President Enock Kavindele, Mines and Minerals Development Minister Maxwell Mwale, Gender Minister Sarah Saifwanda, Energy Minister Kenneth Konga and Science and Technology Minister Peter Daka.

Several traditional leaders were also in attendance.

Are Zambian Youths Tomorrows Leaders?

Over the Easter holiday I have been reflecting on the role of the youths in this country. I have heard the term “youths are the leaders of tomorrow” way too many times. Honestly I am getting sick of this.

 

Friday afternoon I decided to check out a few drinking places in town. I saw youths drinking their heads off. Some looked hopeless, others looked lost while others looked confused. In one drinking place, there was a television in the far corner and a politician is busy talking about “youths are the leaders of tomorrow” wow!

How can youths be leaders of tomorrow when the politician making such statements has been in politics for almost 50 years? How can youths be leaders of tomorrow when they have no jobs? How can youths be leaders of tomorrow when they are unable to go to college or learn a skill? How can youths be leaders of tomorrow when they have no access to finance? How can youths be leaders of tomorrow when they do not participate in the decision-making process in the country? How can youths be leaders of tomorrow when they are not given opportunities to leadership positions? How can they be leaders of tomorrow when the Chinese have more rights in Zambia than they do?

Zambian youths have been left to figure out things on their own. They have been disappointed by the politicians, business leaders and even their pastors. There is no clear roadmap to address issues on the youths in Zambia. Instead youths are used for political expediency by the politicians.
It is the youths who sing and dance for the politicians. It is the youths who fight during political rallies. It is the youths who get shot at and killed by cops. It is the youths who are used day in and day out. What then is the youths’ role in all this? What options do the youths have in Zambia? Here are a few suggestions.

As Zambian youths we have an obligation to participate positively in things that affect us and that will affect our children. We need to speak out against vices such as corruption. As youths, we need to hold our leaders accountable by voting for only those who can do the work and not who belong to this or that political party. We also need to participate in various forums such as the Youth Indabas that are organized by the Ministry of Sport Youth and Child Development. Through these forums you can make your voices heard.

One thing that I personally encourage youths to do is work on developing ourselves. No matter what your situation, is it is important to keep your head up. Be positive about the present and hopeful about the future. Participate in programs that are going to benefit you. We have been encouraging youths to participate in the advocacy for the forth coming (African Growth and Opportunity Act) AGOA meeting that will be held right here in Lusaka.

Youths are encouraged to join facebook pages like AFRICAN YOUTHS SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS so that we can let the leaders in Lusaka and in Washington DC know what we are going through. Let us know what is happening in your neighborhoods. Let us know what is going on in your families.

We are demanding that youths be given the necessary attention they deserve during the forth coming AGOA meeting. We want Hillary Clinton to read this page. So post your messages. We may just ask you to come and participate during this important meeting.

UK to pump K48.5b into Electoral Commission of Zambia

British High Commissioner to Zambia Tom Carter says part of the money will also go towards enhancing democracy in the country.

Mr Carter says the assistance which will be done through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will involve training of police officers to enable them handle elections in an effective manner.

High Commissioner Carter told ZNBC News in an interview that his country will also train election observers.

He is hoping that the elections will be free of violence and the political players will accept the election results.

Zambia’s government has allocated 322 billion Kwacha for the electoral commission to organize this year’s elections.
The exact date of the elections is determined by the President, who has yet to make an announcement.

And new director at ECZ says commission has begun “earnest preparations” for the general elections to be held later this year. Priscilla Isaac says the electoral commission will need over 60,000 “trained and tested” officials to conduct this year’s vote. She says the electoral body is implementing new training strategies for its officers to help “publicize and educate the electorate on what to expect in this year’s elections at the grassroots-level.”

Ms Isaac also rejected the demand of a PVT system , saying the electoral commission is “the only legitimate body mandated by the constitution to organize elections in Zambia.” She says the electoral process as it stands is “open and transparent enough.”

Sata’s endorsements will boost his popularity – UNZA lecturer

A political analyst has said the recent support that Patriotic Front leader Michael Sata has been receiving from former MMD members will have a positive impact on his popularity.

Doctor Alex Ng’oma a political scientist and senior lecturer in the school of Humanities at the University of Zambia has said that the pronouncements are likely to influence voters in favour of Mr. Sata ahead of the forthcoming elections.

He said it is difficult to sway people’s minds when they have decided to support a particular candidate in the interest of change.

And Patriotic Front has charged that the support the party is receiving countrywide is a clear indication that Zambians are eager for change.

PF National Chairperson Inonge Wina says the shift of support in Western Province from the MMD and UPND to the PF is testimony enough that PF leader Michael Sata is the only candidate offering alternative leadership for the Zambians.

Mrs. Wina explained that people should not take for granted observations made by Forum for Democratic Alternatives (FDA) leader Ludwig Sondashi that this year’s elections will favour Mr. Sata.

She said that the PF leader’s popularity has grown countrywide as evidenced by recent defections of MMD and UPND members to the PF.

Mrs. Wina added that the wave of support has shifted to the PF because the party is inclusive of all Zambians regardless of ethnicity.

State releases K10bn for teachers’ perks

THE Ministry of Education has released K10 billion for payment of personal emoluments to teachers in all the provinces.Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary in charge of human resource and administration, Andrew Phiri said in a statement in Lusaka that K1.2 billion had been disbursed in Lusaka while K1 billion was allocated to Central Province.

 

The ministry allocated K1.5 billion to the Copperbelt Province, K1 billion to Western Province, K1 billion to Luapula Province and K1 billion to North-Western Province.

Southern Province was given K1.2 billion, Northern province had K1.1 billion while Eastern Province got K1 billion.Mr Phiri implored all provincial education officers to work with the teachers’ unions to promote accountability and transparency.“Old cases must take precedence over new cases.

Payments must be processed expeditiously, especially retirement and terminal cases.“Lastly but not the least, expenditure returns must be submitted to the Ministry of Education headquarters and the Ministry of Finance and National Planning,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Zambia National Union of Teachers (ZNUT) has welcomed the Government’s commitment to addressing issues affecting teachers.

ZNUT general secretary Newman Bubala said in an interview that the union was happy with the release of K10 billion to settle outstanding payments.

Mr Bubala said the release of the money by the Government was a good gesture which had given them hope that all the K83 billion allocated for clearing teachers’ allowances in this year’s Budget would be disbursed.

He said what was more pleasing was that the K10 billion was the second installment of the K83 billion allocation to be released within a shortperiod of time.

Malaria fight to get continued Government support

Government has reaffirmed enhanced political will and increased budgetary allocations to Malaria programmes as outlined in the Sixth National Development Plan (SNDP), the attainment of the Roll Back Malaria and other health related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Health Deputy Minister Christopher Kalila has also praised the church for partnering with Government and committing itself to working towards a Malaria-free Zambia.

Dr Kalila said though the Church plays an important role in providing spiritual guidance and physical needs of the people, it was gratifying to note that the
it has joined Government to fight malaria in the country in an effort to reduce it.

Dr Kalila said this last evening during the National Prayer Night for Malaria –free Zambia at Chawama Baptist Church in Lusaka.

He implored the Church and other stakeholders to ensure continued implementation of malaria control interventions the disease is still of public concern
in the country.

The Health Deputy Minister pointed out that it was for this reason that President Rupiah Banda, pledged not to rest until every Zambian has easy and low-cost access to quality healthcare anywhere in the country.

Dr Kalila has since called for enhanced partnerships in the successful implementation of the Sixth National Development Plan (SNDP), the attainment of
the Roll Back Malaria and health related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

He reaffirmed Government’s commitment in supporting initiatives by the Church and other organisations whose efforts are aimed at bettering the welfare of
Zambians.

And delivering his homily, Anglican Church Priest,Robert Sihubwa said the occasion provided an opportunity to Christians to reflect on their Christian
faith by asking for God’s wisdom in their efforts to reduce malaria in the country.

Father Sihubwa further said the prayer night also gave hope to both the Church and Government’s vision of a free malaria-free Zambia.

Earlier, Zambia Anglican Church Vicar General Canon Kaunda said the Church is aware that malaria is a serious disease which kills over three million people annually in Africa.

Vicar General Kaunda added that the Church appreciates Gvernment’s commitment in mitigating the social, economic impact that diseases such as malaria,
HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis has had on families and communities.

He pledged the Church’s commitment in empowering Zambians by offering lasting solutions to the fight against poverty, economic injustice, hunger and disease.

This is the fourth National Prayer Night for Malaria –free Zambia since it was started in 2008.

The main objective of the Prayer Night is to bring before God the malaria problem, bringing to the fore of the Zambian Malaria experience and also
appreciating the work and medical progress made in the fight against the disease.

The event is organised by the Ministry of Health through the National Malaria Control Centre, the Malaria Partnership in Africa (MACEPA) and spearheaded by
the Zambian Anglican Church.

Malaria Africa Day was marked on April 25.

RB to launch new mine in Solwezi

PRESIDENT Banda is today expected to officially launch the construction of a multi-million dollar mining investment at Kalumbila near Solwezi in North-Western Province, which is expected to create more than 2,000 jobs once completed.

 

According to a statement by special assistant to the president for Press and public relations Dickson Jere, the president said the Kalumbila Minerals Trident project, owned by First Quantum Minerals, showed that Zambia’s economy was headed for more success under his leadership as more foreign investors continued to pump huge sums of money into the economy.

“The new mine will increase the national coffers through taxes that will translate into more money which my Government will use to improve the lives of Zambians,” President Banda said ahead of the ground-breaking ceremony of the US$1 billion project.

The new mine was expected to start operations in 2014 and with the commencement of operations at Kalumbila Minerals and other new mining projects, Zambia’s copper production is expected to peak at about one million tonnes of copper per annum.

President Banda, who will be in North-Western Province for two days, is also expected to officially open Solwezi Trades Training Institute constructed as part of the Government’s strategy to provide skills education to young people.

The president will further lay a foundation stone for the construction of Zangamenu Bridge and flag off the construction of township roads in Solwezi District.

PF MP sources funds for construction of a clinic

Chawama Patriotic Front (PF) Member of Parliament (MP) Sampa Bredt has disclosed that about K785 million will be spent on the construction of a clinic in Freedom Compound.

Mrs. Bredt said the construction of the clinic has already commenced and was expected to be in operational by the end of this year.

She explained that of the funds, about K160 million was sourced from Constituency Development Funds (CDF), K25 milion from Ward Development Funds while the other K600 million came from the Swedish Embassy who were the cooperating partners in the project.

Reverend Bredt observed that residents of Freedom Compound Ward 4 were currently facing difficulties in accessing health services as they had to travel long distances to Chawama and Chilanga clinics respectively.

ZANIS reports that the MP said this in Lusaka yesterday when she toured developmental projects under construction in her constituency.

Rev. Bredt said there were also plans to construct a school near the clinic since the land which has been allocated for the project was big enough to accommodate other developmental projects.

Speaking earlier, Lusaka District Health Management Team (DHMT) Medical Officer, Roy Chavuma said inspections carried out by experts indicate that building project conforms to the set standards of health clinics.

Mr. Chavuma said two houses will also be constructed for staff that will be operating at the clinic.

Meanwhile Rev. Bredt has commended government for constructing a local court in Chawama compound saying it will go a long way in helping residents who have to move long distances to attend court sessions in other areas such as Chilenje.

And in another development, Lusaka District Health Management Team, Medical Officer Roy Chavuma says about K1.3 billion is needed for the construction of a surgical ward and extension of the maternity wing at Chawama clinic.

Mr. Chavuma says the maternity wing at the clinic needs to be extended besides construction of a surgical ward, administration block and a frontage that will make it look like a hospital.

He said construction works will start once all necessary resources have been put in place.

ZANIS reports that Mr. Chavuma was speaking in Lusaka yesterday when Chawama Member of Parliament Sampa Bredt inspected some projects in Chawama’s Jack compound.

And speaking earlier, Chawama Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Sampa Bredt said she has set aside K350m from the Constituency Development Funds (CDF) to go towards the extension of the maternity wing at the clinic.

Reverend Bredt said the construction works have delayed because the Government through Ministry of Health wants to put up a modern structure which will also include a surgical ward.

She has since commended government for its efforts in improving health facilities in her area.

And Rev. Bredt said the construction of an ablution block at Chawama Market at cost of K306 million from CDF funds has been completed and was scheduled to be commissioned in the next two weeks.

New power station in Itezhi Tezhi to increase power generation

The construction of the multi-billion Itezhi-Tezhi Power Corporation(ITPC) will increase power supply in Itezhi-tezhi district from the current 1MVA supplied from Choma to 10 MVA leading to better standard of living and improved economic activity.

The estimated US$ 231 million 120 megawatts power station will comprise Kaplan turbines coupled with Synchronous generator with a generation voltage of 11KV.

ZANIS reports that Itezhi-Tezhi Power Corporation Director Robert Nsamba who disclosed this during a presentation at a stakeholders meeting at Musungwa lodge in Itezhi-tezhi district yesterday assured the stakeholders that power reliability in the district will greatly improve when the power station is operational.

He said that SinoHydro which was awarded the contract through International Competitive Bidding (ICB) process has moved on site and is mobilizing equipment following a kick off meeting held last week in Lusaka.

He said that the 50-50 share holding company between TATA-Africa Holdings and ZESCO will operate on the Built-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT).

This means the power corporation will operate the project for 25 years before handing it over to the government.

Mr. Nsamba noted that Itezhi-Tezhi power Corporation will be the first power project in Zambia to be implemented under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.

Mr. Nsamba said that the project includes the development of 220KV/330 KV transmission line of about 280 kilometers from Itezhi-Tezhi to Lusaka with a substation at Mumbwa.

He observed that the substation at Mumbwa will ensure supply to mines and farming areas.

He noted that the Itezhi-Tezhi energy project will not only benefit the country alone but also the SADC region which is grappling with an energy crisis.

Mr. Nsamba further said that the commencement of the power project in Itezhi-tezhi district is also an opportunity for people to apply to the Citizen Economic Empowerment Commission for funds to set up various businesses that will support the project.

Indian Vice President Mohammad Ansari’s visit to Zambia last year saw the Indian government giving Zambia a US $50 million loan facility to develop the 120-megawatt Itezhi Tezhi hydro power station, aimed at increasing the country’s power generation capacity.

The Itezhi Tezhi hydro power project is a joint venture between ZESCO and Tata Africa Holdings, an Indian company involved in ICT and electric power generation in Africa.

Lions terrorize villagers in Itezhi Tezhi District

Lions have attacked several villages and killed five herds of cattle in Itumbi area in Chief Kaingu’s chiefdom in Itezhi-Tezhi district in Southern Province.

One cow was killed and eaten yesterday afternoon while four herds of cattle were killed in the early hours of today.

Alfred Malawo, the owner of the cattle that have been killed, confirmed the incident to ZANIS in a walk-in interview in Itezhi-Tezhi today.

He said that people in Itumbi area in Kaingu Chiefdom are living under fear of attacks from the carnivorous beats which are roaming the bushes around the villages in Itumbi.

Mr. Malawo said that the matter has been reported to Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) in Ngoma headquarters by Chief Kaingu although they have not yet gone to the area.

He further said that there was need for ZAWA to put measures that will control the dangerous animals before they start attacking people or kill more domestic animals.

Parliamentary Chief Whip Vernon Mwaanga

Opposition Patriotic Front Leader Michael Sata has charged that reports indicating that President Rupiah Banda has replaced Parliamentary Chief Whip Vernon Mwaanga as his Campaign manager with Education Deputy Minister Boniface Kawimbe is a ploy.

Mr. Sata said that the move is just a ploy by the ruling MMD to blindfold Zambians that Mr. Mwaanga has been kept out of the spotlight ahead of this year’s elections, while he continues to perform background roles.

He said that this is not the first time that the ruling MMD has succumbed to such tactics as they have done the same in the previous elections.

Mr. Sata was commenting on a media reports that President Banda has replaced Mr. Mwaanga with Doctor Kawimbe as Campaign manager in this year’s polls following a disagreement between the two emanating from the recent MMD convention which was held in Kabwe.

He said this in an interview with QFM.
