Zambians don’t want the change being advocated by frustrated politicians-Siulapwa

New Generation Party President Humphrey Siulapwa has warned Zambians to be wary of politicians calling for change to avoid plunging the country into chaos.

Speaking during a press briefing at the party headquarters in Lusaka today, Mr. Siulapwa said Zambians are clever enough to see what type of change they want and not the change being advocated by frustrated politicians.

Mr. Siulapwa said majority of some former MMD members who have been expelled from the ruling party have now re-grouped under the Patriotic Front thinking that Zambians are not watching them.

He warned the Patriotic Front members to be careful with people such as Former Ministers, Mike Mulongoti, Ludwig Sondashi, Edith Nawakwi, George Mpombo and Mbita Chitala whom he described as disgruntled politicians who have lost direction and have since joined the Patriotic Front.

He accused Mr. Mulongoti of lacking principles and that he was a shameless opportunist who overrates himself.

Mr. Siulapwa said it was strange that Mr. Mulongoti had allegedly continued cheating the nation that he put President Banda in State House in 2008 yet he only has one vote.

He said contrary to what he termed Mr. Mulongoti’s selfish motives; Mr. Siulapwa said it was the people of Zambia that voted to have President Banda in State House.

Mr. Siulapwa wondered why it had to take a dismissal for Mr. Mulongoti to see all the evil things he was now talking about with regards to President Rupiah Banda.

He said Mr. Mulongoti’s behaviour exposed how shallow minded and selfish he is.

He warned Mr. Mulongoti and Dr. Chitala to stop making un necessary attacks on President Banda because his supporters wont sit idle but retaliate when ever the Head of State is insulted.

He said Dr. Chitala was unstable, unreliable and a traitor who has betrayed both former President Frederick Chiluba and late President Mwanawasa when he was given responsibility in the party and in Government to serve the Zambian people.

And the New Generation Party President has rubbished the opinion poll conducted by the Center for Policy Dialogue Executive Director Dr. Neo Simutanyi that Patriotic Front President Michael Sata is poised to win this year’s elections by 31 percent.

Mr. Siulapwa said it was wishful thinking that the Patriotic Front President Michael Chilufya Sata will win this year’s election.

He said the people of Zambia know very well what President Banda has done for this country and that he deserves a second term of office.

The opposition leader said those thinking that President Rupiah Banda will lose this year’s election will wake up to a rude shock after the announcement of the results.

Sport, Youth and Child Development Minister Kenneth Chipungu has called on all youths to reject violence and only use dialogue and mutual understanding to resolve differences as the country heads towards the 2011 tripartite elections.

Mr. Chipungu advised the youths to reject politicians who are proponents of violence at all cost as they are capable of wrecking chaos and disharmony in the country.

ZANIS reports that the Minister said this in a speech read for him by his deputy Brian Sikazwe during the Western Province Youth indaba held under the theme ‘Let the Youth be Heard, Dialogue and Mutual Understanding.

He said the country needs to guard jealously the peace it has enjoyed since its independence in 1964.

Mr. Chipungu stated that the Western Province Indaba underscores the need to create room for cooperation and to strengthen mutual understanding and respect among all stakeholders in order to promote peace and tranquility in the country.

The Minister stated that dialogue and mutual understanding is important as it diffuses tension and prevents unpleasant situations from escalating besides promoting reconciliation in the aftermath of conflict.

“Dialogue and Mutual understanding is surely a force for conflict prevention, management and resolution which can contribute to peace building. It can move us to towards peaceful co-existence, which is the fundamental human principle”, he said.

Mr. Chipungu said it was imperative therefore that the nation continued to promote cultural, political and religious diversity as this was a basic human right enshrined in many legally binding instruments.

And Mr. Chipungu assured the country that government will continue to promote foreign direct investment in order to develop the nation and to create employment for the youth.

He said government has performed extremely well in the past two years through hard work and a lot of sacrifice.

The Minister also said government will not relent in its efforts to reduce poverty levels among its citizenry especially the youth despite having made tremendous strides in this respect.

He urged the youths to play their role and help government implement the development agenda for the country.

Speaking at the same occasion, Western Province Minister Richard Mwapela said the importance of youth indabas cannot be overemphasized as they help strengthen youth participation in national development through a constructive process of guided dialogue.

Mr. Mwapela said the indabas provide Zambian youths an opportunity to express their views on issues that affect them and propose workable solutions for possible implementation by government and other relevant stakeholders.

He said the Western Province Indaba attests to government’s commitment to make youth development and empowerment a part of the country’s development agenda by prioritizing youth programmes in an effort to mitigate the challenges young people face.

And Western Province Youth Dialogue Forum Coordinator Muhari Muhari appealed to government to quickly look into the lack of tertiary education facilities in Western Province.

Mr. Muhari said there are only two tertiary education facilities in the entire Western Province for Youths to acquire skills needed for them to secure employment.

The Western Province Youth Indaba drew participation of over 270 youths from six of the seven districts of the province that included Kaoma, Lukulu, Shangombo, Mongu, Senanga and Kalabo.

Vice President George Kunda’s wife Ireen, has stressed the need for farmers in the country to embrace conservation farming in a bid to boost agriculture production.

Addressing farmers during the presentation of 224 bicycles to 28 farmers from eight farming camps of Serenje in Central Province yesterday, Mrs. Kunda also urged small scale farmers in the district to adopt conservation farming to enhance their crop yields.

ZANIS reports that Mrs. Kunda said Government through the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives with support from the United Nations (UN) agency Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) deliberately introduced conservation farming as a way of achieving agriculture production hence increasing food security at both household and national levels.

Mrs. Kunda who was accompanied by some Ministers’ spouses among them Central Province Minister Ackimson Banda’s wife advised small scale farmers to apply principles on conservation farming among them minimum soil tillage, timely planting and application of fertilizer and crop rotation noting that if properly applied these could help improve crop yields.

Mrs. Kunda told the farmers to seriously adhere to the principles of conservation farming, if the country was to experience another superfluous crop yields.

Mrs. Kunda who told the gathering that the presentation of bicycles was a continuation of an exercise which was started by the First Lady added that the distribution was done in Chieftainess and Chief Mailo’s chiefdoms.

She further advised farmers to use the bicycles they had received to monitor performance of conservation farming in their respective camps and not for other purposes.

Among beneficiaries of the bicycles comprised farming camps such as:Mbaswa, Chimupati, Kamena, Kabundi,Chibobo,Muchinka, Mulilima and Chisebwa.

Serenje District Commissioner, Stanley Chibwana and District Agriculture Coordinator Kennedy Mulenga were also present during the event.

President Banda talks to journalists before he left for Turkey at Lusaka international airport

President Rupiah Banda says Turkey is an important country and that Zambia will greatly benefit economically from Turkeys Experiences.

 

President Banda said this today at Lusaka International Airport shortly before his departure for Istanbul,Turkey where he will be among the other world leaders attending the 4th United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries.

Mr. Banda said the conference is an important forum for Zambia and other Least Developed Countries (LDCs) as well as co-operating partners to re-examine the entire development paradigm in the light of existing and emerging global challenges and existing poverty.

The President said Zambia and Turkey enjoy warm bilateral relations which date back to many years ago adding that this was an opportunity for Zambia to benefit economically from that country’s vast knowledge in economic management.

He said he was personally invited by his Turkish counterpart, President Abdullah Gul for bilateral discussions meant to further benefit the two countries.

President Banda added that the Zambian delegation from all sectors of the economy are already in that country and that he was optimistic that Zambia will amass many benefits because Turkey has a vibrant economic policy which has made that it to be what it is today.

And President Banda has described Patriotic Front President Michael Sata as a desperate person without any vision for the country.

President Banda said Mr. Sata has been in Government for many years and only left the MMD when he was not adopted by the party in 2001.

He said Mr. Sata served in many Government portfolios where he did not even perform to the expectations of the Zambian people.

And on Mr. Sata’s trip to the United Kingdom, President Banda said the trip was fake and that it had no significance whatsoever because the latter was not invited by Oxford University perse.

President Banda said Mr. Sata was invited by a small group of students adding that even those who saw the picture in the Post Newspaper would be able to attest to it that only a small group of people attended his meeting.

Meanwhile, President Banda has called on the media in the country to stop addressing expelled former Works and Supply Minister Mike Mulongoti as Honorable because he was no longer a nominated Member of Parliament.

He said Mulongoti is a frustrated person and warned him to stop making unwarranted statements against him and the party in the press.

President Banda wondered what bad things Mr. Mulongoti has seen in the MMD which he never saw until he was ejected from the party.

Stop it ,MMD tells Colonel Panji Kaunda

The Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) has called on first Republican President Kenneth Kaunda’s son Colonel Panji Kaunda to stop provoking the ruling party by claiming that most Zambians are leaving in poverty.

MMD Deputy national secretary Chembe Nyangu says Colonel Kaunda should desist from attacking the MMD regime adding that he failed to offer constructive advice to Dr Kaunda when he was President.

Mr. Nyangu says Colonel Kaunda lacks principles as he keeps moving from one party to the other stating that Zambians should not take him seriously.

He says his support for the PF is an act of desperation following his expulsion from the United Party for National Development (UPND).

Meanwhile, Mr. Nyangu has declined to comment on the call by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) for political parties to stop airing campaign adverts on radio stations as the move is illegal and a breach of the electoral code of conduct.

MMD is one of the political parties illegally airing campaign adverts on various radio stations ahead of the general elections.

Recently, Information and Broadcasting Services Minister Ronnie Shikapwasha threatened to close down all radio stations running political adverts.

Nakambala Lick Lime To Sweet Win

Nakambala Leopards returned to the top of the Faz Super Division table after a 1-0 win away over promoted Lime Hotspurs at Indeni Sports Complex in Ndola today.

The Mazabuka club replaced Red Arrows from the top spot after the latter lost 2-0 across town at Dola Hill against hosts Forest Rangers.

Nakambala’s three points were secured thanks to a 14th minute penalty converted by Webster Mulenga who scored his third goal of the season for the club.

Arrows slip to second while Nkwazi are third after a 2-0 home win over Green Eagles in Lusaka.

Staying in Lusaka at Sunset Stadium, Zanaco and Nkana played out to a riveting 1-1 draw in a quality game that did not disappointed the packed venue.

Nkana’s boisterous fans created an electric atmosphere throughout in this Copperbelt versus Midlands duel.

Zanaco scored first through Ignatius Lwipa in the 17th minute to see them go 1-0 into halftime.
Nkana equalized just after the restart in the 48th minute through Evans Kangwa.

Zanaco striker Moses Phiri had a good chance to win it for the host in the 69th minute.

Phiri’s shot at point-blank range with only goalkeeper Kelvin Mulenga to beat came off the horizontal, bounced off the goal line before it was cleared back into play.

The draw didn’t do Nkana any good and they have slipped from 10th to fourth from bottom in 13th place.

Meanwhile, Zanaco stay fourth on the same number of points as fifth placed Power Dynamos who thumped Green Buffaloes 4-1 at Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe today.

Michael Sata’s Lecture at Oxford University

Patriotic Front President Michael Sata was in the United Kingdom this week. While there he gave the ORENGA Special lecture at the University of Oxford. President of Zambia’s Patriotic Front, spoke on his experience as an opposition leader in Zambia. The lecture was sponsored by the African Studies Centre, the Rhodes Trust, and the Politics and International Relations department.

 

Government development programmes continue to shame its critics – Cifire

Luangeni Member of Parliament Angela Cifire says government has continued to shame its critics by continuing to provide development to the people of Luangeni and the country as a whole.

Ms. Cifire said it is unfortunate that some people do not appreciate the developments the MMD under President Rupiah Banda has brought to the people.

ZANIS reports that Ms. Cifire was speaking when she addressed Saili Women’s Association and later paid a courtesy call on Chief Saili at his palace.

Ms. Cifire said some people just negatively criticize government development programmes for no apparent reason saying such people only want to be difficulty for nothing.

She said there were a lot of developmental programmes government is undertaking in Luangeni and the country at large adding that even critics of government are aware of such developments.

She called on such people to come out in the open and appreciate the development programmes government has put in place.

Ms. Cifire who is also Information and Broadcasting Services Deputy Minister, said those that have come out in the open to support government realize and have seen that MMD is a working government.

She commended those that have openly supported development programmes in her constituency and the country as a whole and urged them not to relent in doing so.

And Chief Saili of the Ngoni speaking people in Kova area in Luangeni constituency has urged government to continue assisting women clubs in his area and engage them in various developmental projects.

He said this was important as it would help women in the area become active in issues of their development.

Chief Saili said that involving women in developmental projects would also help them contribute to the development process in his chiefdom.

He noted that there is need for Saili area to develop in order to be a strong example to other chiefdoms.

Meanwhile Saili Women Association Chairperson, Emekiye Soko said women in the association have continued to remain united and working closely together.

Ms. Soko said unlike other women association, Saili women Association understand the importance of unity.
She said unity was an important ingredient of progress for any society.

President Banda pays tribute to late wife

President Rupiah Banda and and his wife Thandiwe Banda today laid wreaths at his late first wife Hope Mwansa Banda’s grave at Old Leopard’s Hill Cemetery in Lusaka.

President Banda also laid a wreath in memory of the late son of a South African National Congress( ANC) freedom fighter Billy Modese who died in Zambia on 28th December, 1977.

And speaking at the memorial Service of his late wife at Leopards Hill Cemetery in Lusaka today, President Banda described the occasion as special because it gave him an opportunity to be joined by his South African old friends whom he lived together with during the freedom struggle.

President Banda said the Modese family lived in Zambia during their country’s liberation struggle.

Mr. Banda further said his late wife, Hope Mwansa Banda went to school in Switzerland where his family friends such as Henry Makuku was a lecturer at the University of Switzerland adding that the Modese family grew up together with his wife in that country.

He said even when his wife Hope Mwansa Banda was sick in South Africa, the Modese family was there to render all the necessary support they could unitl at the time of the death of Mrs. Banda.

The President stated that he spent one year in South Africa when his wife was hospitalized for cancer, the disease which the President said killed his wife and added that he was looked after well by the Modese family.

And commenting on the late son of a South African National Congress Freedom Fighter Billy Modese, President Banda said Tshipo Modese, who died in 1977, died as a young man and wished Tshipo would have been alive today to see his age mates like his son Henry Banda whom he said was born almost at the same time.

He said it was sad that Tshipo died at the time when his father was busy with the liberation of South Africa during the apartheid era.

He thanked the family members both from South Africa and Zambia for having found time to pay tribute to late Tshipo Modese whom the President said died at a tender age after an illness.

President Banda’s late wife Hope Mwansa Banda was born on 29th August, 1941 and died on 11th October, 2000 in South Africa and was buried at Leopards Hill Cemetery.

Tshipo Modese, the late son of South African (ANC) freedom fighter Billy Modese was born on 28 December, 1965 in Sweden and died in Zambia after an illness on 22nd September, 1977.

The Memorial service was attended by President Banda, his wife Thandiwe, Mr. Billy Modese and his wife Olisa Modese and other family members both from Zambia and South Africa.

British Airways slashes fares on Lusaka-London route

British Airways (BA) has reduced its fares across the board on its Lusaka –London flight as part of restructuring of its ticket pricing system.

British Airways Commercial Manager for Zambia, Beatrice Kamanga announced the reduction in a statement to ZANIS in Lusaka today.

She said the airline has introduced a new shoulder season of mid range fares for flights from June 10 to 22, December 6 to 31 and between August15, and October 31.

Ms. Kamanga said the reductions will mean the airline which is the only airline to fly customers direct from Zambia to Europe give travelers’ real value for money.

She said the new fare structures which will also incorporate further reductions in low season fares comes into effect on Monday May 9, 2011.

She said the airline has been working hard to provide affordable fares while maintaining high quality service and comfort.

“The airline, which is the only airline to fly customers direct from Zambia to Europe, has introduced a new “shoulder season” of mid-range fares for flights between August 15 and October 31, June 10-22 and from December 6 to 31,” she said.

Ms. Kamanga said customers can fly into London Heathrow’s new Terminal 5 for around two-thirds of the peak season fare if they fly at the new designated “shoulder season” times.

She added that the low season rates apply from January 19 to June 9, and November 1 to December 5 while the high season is from June 23 to August 14 and from January 1 to 15.

She added that tourists and professionals will benefit from the new ticket rates, as it will enable them choose a time to fly according to their schedules while still taking advantage of attractive prices.

British Airways has been operating in Zambia for more than 70 years and currently flies in the country three times a week.

President Banda leaves for Turkey tomorrow

President Rupiah Banda, is tomorrow scheduled to leave for Istanbul, Turkey, where he will be among other world leaders attending the Fourth United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

The President will also meet his Turkish counterpart, Abdullah Gul, for bilateral discussions that are set to further benefit the two countries’ already warm relations.

This is according to a statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka today by Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations Dickson Jere Banda.

Mr. Jere said the LDCs conference is an important forum for Zambia and other LDCs including cooperating partners as it will re-examine the entire development paradigm in light of existing and emerging global challenges and existing poverty.

The President will be accompanied to Turkey by Finance and National Planning Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane, and Foreign Affairs Minister Kabinga Pande.

President Banda’s administration has continued to place poverty reduction at the heart of Zambia’s development agenda.

A series of national planning frameworks have since been developed in line with the Brussels Programme of Action, with Zambia registering significant economic progress.

The Brussels Programme of Action is aimed at making substantial progress towards achieving equitable sustained, growth and development. It also focuses on minimizing the marginalization of the LDCs and assisting them graduate from the LDC status.

Like many other LDCs, Zambia desires to increase her productive capabilities, diversify the economy, achieve market access and call for fair trade practices, benefit from technology transfer, and improve infrastructure so as to lift people out of poverty.

President Banda launched the Sixth National Development Plan (SNDP) 2011-2016 which is focused on infrastructure development as a vehicle to drive Zambia’s development agenda.

The President’s delegation is expected to return to Zambia after completing the scheduled business in Turkey.

Increasing measles cases worry – Eastern PS

Eastern Province Permanent Secretary Eularia Mwale, has expressed concern at the continued increase of new cases of measles in the Province.

In a speech read for her by Deputy Permanent Secretary Nicholas Banda, Mrs. Mwale stated that the province has recorded 6,149 cases since last year when the outbreak was first reported with more than fifty percent being reported among children above the age of five.

She was speaking at the Eastern Province Epidemic preparedness meeting at Luangwa Lodge in Chipata yesterday.

Mrs. Mwale observed that Lundazi district had continued to report the highest number of measles cases with 5,519 reported cases.

Mrs. Mwale said there was need for continued sensitization on the need for people to take their children for immunization saying measles was preventable in at least 85 percent of those who were immunized.

She expressed concern that there were still pockets of people who were denying their children access to measles vaccines on religious beliefs adding that this had led to undesirable consequences.

The Permanent Secretary urged public health workers to intervene and involve other relevant government offices to ensure that children were not denied the much needed service in line with the Public Health Act.

“Our records show that most of the developed measles were either not vaccinated or their vaccination status is unknown, so we need to encourage parents to take their children to health facilities during the bi-annual child health week campaigns so that they can benefit
from the various health services that are provided,” Mrs. Mwale said.

And Lundazi District Medical Officer Allan Chisenga said there was need for measles vaccines to be given even to people above the age of five years if the diseases was to be effectively addressed.

Dr. Chisenga stated that more than fifty percent of the new cases were reported in children above five years although no deaths had been recorded among these age groups.

The District Medical official stated that the district health team had identified Munyukwa, Kanyanga,and Mwase-Lundazi as the areas that were mostly hit by the epidemic.

He noted that the district reported 1,519 since January this year saying 21 people have died since the first case was reported last year.

And Katete District Commissioner Elemani Mwanza attributed the increase of measles cases in his districts to interactions with affected people from neighboring Mozambique.

Mr. Mwanza said most of the cases reported in the district were either near the border with Mozambique or among members of the apostolic faith who do not allow their children to be immunized.

He stated that district authorities used force by engaging police officers and chiefs to ensure that all children were immunized in the last immunization campaign.

“All children were, regardless of their religious background, immunized and the district recorded a success during the last child health week,” he said.

Mr. Mwanza also pointed out that traditional leaders had taken an active role and ensured that all parents in their chiefdoms took their children for vaccination.

Meanwhile, Nyimba district reported 500 measles cases most of which were recorded in Chipembe and Kalambakuwa areas.

District Medical Officer Nyambe Sinyambe said no deaths were recorded as a result of measles in Nyimba district.

MMD to lose elections like UNIP -Mpombo

Kafulafuta Member of Parliament George Mpombo has said the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) government will lose this year’s election in a similar way that the former UNIP government failed.

Mr. Mpombo says Zambians should never make a mistake of voting for the MMD back into government.

He says if president Banda is given the instruments of power, injustice in the country will rise to higher levels.

The MP,however, stated that the MMD has no chance of winning the elections because of president Banda’s leadership.

Mr. Mpombo added that president Rupiah Banda has no capacity to lead Zambia anymore because of his shoddy deals he has been involved in.

He added that Patriotic Front (PF) president Michael Sata will make a better president than the current government of MMD.

And Mr. Mpombo has stated that it is quite unfortunate that the MMD government has allowed tribal appointments to take root.

He says that it is a pity that most appointments by the president are being based on tribal relationships with president Banda.

Stand up for Zambia producer Chanda Chimba (III)

Second Republican President Dr. Frederick Chiluba has dismissed media reports that he is part of the sponsors of Chanda Chimba III’s MMD propaganda.

Dr. Chiluba says the insinuations are untrue which are meant to demean the status of his office as second republican president.

He says he does not owe anyone an explanation over the allegations because they are false.

Dr. Chiluba through his spokesperson, Emmanuel Mwamba states that Stand Up for Zambia producer Chanda Chimba has his own financers, and that he is not one of them.

He says such allegations should not be believed by anyone because he as has no association with Chanda Chimba.

Information circulating on the internet has named Dr. Chiluba, as one of the sponsors of the newly published Stand up for Zambia Newspaper.

Others said to be sponsoring the newspaper are Ben Mwila, Katanga province Governor Moses Katumbi and the MMD Task force fund.
