‘Praying in tongues’ lands woman in trouble

32

A born-again woman has told a local court that her husband chains her hands and legs on suspicion that she is mentally deranged because of her way of praying which involves “speaking in tongues” and on top of her voice.

Ruth Chavula, who is an ardent member of Living Water Pentecostal Church in Kawama Township in Kitwe, said her husband accuses her of being insane because of the way she prays.

She said this in a case in which her husband, Martifel Nyasulu, sued her for divorce. Both are Kawama Township residents.

“My lord, my husband usually chains both my hands and my legs when I pray in tongues and on top of my voice. He suspects that I am insane because of the way I pray. This is wrong and unfair because I am not mad,” she said.

Chavula told the Buchi local court number two senior presiding magistrate, Maketo Likomba, who was sitting with senior presiding magistrate Godwin Lundu, that she has never had sex with her husband for two years because he has deserted her.

She said her husband does not support her and that it is not true that she has a boyfriend as alleged by her husband.

Chavula, who refused to give her statement until the court started re-examining her, said one day her neighbours locked her in a house with a man who wanted to start renting their house and that they phoned her husband, who found the two inside the house.

“We have two houses in Kawama Township. One of the houses fell vacant and I went with a certain man who wanted to look at it because he wanted to start renting it, but while we were inside viewing the house, some of our neighbours locked us from outside and phoned my husband, who came and found us inside with the man and he started accusing me of being unfaithful to him,” she said.

The two got married in 1998 and have four children. They got married through customary marriage and they do not have a marriage certificate.

In his statement, Nyasulu said they lived in harmony for three years and that problems started when they had their first child.

He accused Chavula of being adulterous. He said that at one time around 19:30 hours he found her sitting on the laps of a man and that the two were holding each other passionately.

“When I wanted to chase the man and to remove her from the man’s laps, my wife got upset with me and hit me in the back with a big log. In the ensuing confusion the man escaped,” he said.

Nyasulu said his children told him that there was a man who was visiting his wife each time he was not at home.

“My wife spends nights away from home without telling me. She has threatened to kill herself and sometimes she would pack her household goods and go to her relatives. When I call for a meeting with her relatives to iron out the differences, her people don’t come,” he said.

Nyasulu also said that on another occasion he found her in the house with a man whose identity she has refused to disclose.

The court adjourned the matter and directed that Chavula’s pastor goes to the court and confirm whether she is mentally challenged.

`No vote for pro-gay politicians’

57

The church says it will campaign against political leaders advocating gay rights and has embarked on sensitising and educating members of the public on dangers of voting for such candidates.

The stance follows Patriotic Front (PF) president Michael Sata’s statement that homosexuals have rights in Zambia.

Bible Gospel Church in Africa (BIGOCA) overseer Bishop Peter Ndhlovu said in an interview that the church has embarked on programmes aimed at sensitising and educating people on the dangers of voting for leaders advocating for gay rights.

Bishop Ndhlovu said prayer meetings will be held around the country based on various themes to preach on peace, harmony, unity, and reconciliation as Zambia heads for the general elections due this year.

Bishop Ndhlovu said Zambia needs leaders who are biblical and have values. He said it is inhuman and an abomination for the country to have advocates of gay rights.

“The church is coming together to hold powerful prayers and public meetings to educate people on the dangers of voting for leaders advocating

gay rights. It is cross-denominational,” he said.

Bishop Ndhlovu said his church will go flat-out to campaign against the PF and any other political party promoting gay rights.

He said Mr Sata has run out of ideas and if he and the Danish journalists want to promote gay rights, it will not work in Zambia.

Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) executive director Pukuta Mwanza said in a separate interview that the prayer meetings are aimed at educating the general public and voters on how to identify qualities in leaders in the coming elections.

“We want members of the public and voters to know what to look for in leaders and we will continue campaigning against leaders advocating gay rights because we do not want our country to have such bad laws that promote inhuman ways of life,” he said.

Rev Mwanza said he will ensure that gay rights are not enshrined in the Constitution of Zambia.

Meanwhile, Government has asked the church in Zambia to reject people who want to defile society with evil and immoral practices such as homosexuality.

Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services Ronnie Shikapwasha said the church must stand up and rebuke homosexuality because it is unChristian, unholy and ungodly.

“Homosexuality is not only abominable but also criminal in our society,” Lieutenant-General Shikapwasha said.

He called on Christians to keep praying for peace and unity ahead of presidential and general elections due this year.

Rev Shikapwasha said Christians should pray for President Banda and his government so that he continues to lead this nation in peace and prosperity.

“We want members of the public and voters to know what to look for in leaders and we will continue campaigning against leaders advocating gay rights because we do not want our country to have such bad laws that promote inhuman ways of life,” he said.

He said this in Lusaka yesterday during the graduation of Omega Global University of South Africa.

Gen Shikapwasha urged the graduates to be the light of the world.

“The degrees you are getting today are not for prestige but they place a heavy and noble responsibility on you in guiding our society and being partners with government in the development of our nation Zambia,” he said.

Omega Global University Chancellor Vusumuzi Sibiya challenged the church leaders to become biblical and develop spiritual intimacy with God.

Professor Sibiya said this is the only way they will overcome challenges and temptations in their endeavours.

New $28m fertiliser plant to create 350 jobs

7

GOVERNMENT says 350 jobs will be created when a US$28 million fertiliser plant is constructed in Kapiri Mposhi by a Russian investor this year.

Minister of Agriculture and Co-operatives Eustarkio Kazonga has also said that Government will commence evaluation of the crop harvest for last season.

Dr Kazonga said that a Russian investor has expressed interest in partnering with the local company in setting up the fertiliser plant in Kapiri Mposhi.

“Apart from Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia (NCZ), a new plant will be constructed in Kapiri Mposhi which will result in job creation for the local people,” he said.

He said in an interview in Ndola that the establishment of the new fertiliser plant will enhance the distribution of the farming input to farmers across the country.

Dr Kazonga said there is high demand for fertiliser in the country resulting from increased farming activities.

He said Government is reviewing the implementation of the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) for this year.

Last year Government distributed 90,000 tonnes of urea and 60,000 tonnes of compound D fertilisers.

Government has since contracted NCZ to produce 30,000 tonnes of compound D fertiliser for the coming season.

”Both products were supposed to be equal, but there was more urea distributed than compound D last year,” he said.

He said the total fertilizer to be distributed for 2011/12 will be 180,000 tonnes.

Dr Kazonga said Government will continue to implement FISP to invigorate agriculture in the country.

He said this is why Government is implementing the farm blocks strategic plan in the nine provinces.

Nansanga farm block in Serenje is a pilot project where 357 plots have been advertised for local and international investors.

Dr Kazonga has also set aside K500 million for Luena farm block in Luapula Province. The money is for surveying of the farm block.

He said all the nine farm blocks identified so far will be operational in line with Government’s agriculture diversification plan.

Dr Kazonga also said that officers from his ministry are about to start a crop harvest review to check on whether Zambia has again recorded a bumper harvest.

“Our officers in the field are about to commence the crop harvest evaluation on last season’s agriculture activities,” he said.

Meanwhile the National Union of Commercial and Industrial Workers (NUIW) has commended government for awarding a contract to NCZ to produce 30,000 tonnes of fertiliser for the 2011/2012 farming season.

NUCIW general secretary Seth Paradza said in an interview that the contract will help NCZ contribute effectively to economic development and ease the company’s financial challenges.

Mr Paradza said the union is happy with Government for responding to the workers’ desire that another contract be given to the company. He said that the NCZ has the capacity to produce 50,000 to 60,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser.

He urged government to continue awarding NCZ contracts because the company has the capacity to produce the required quantities of fertiliser within set deadlines.

Mr Paradza said that it is also important that Zambia produces its own fertiliser instead of relying on imported products.

“Government should continue awarding contracts to NCZ to locally manufacture fertiliser because it will be cheaper and more affordable to farmers than the imported fertiliser,” he said.

He also called on Government to partner with NCZ in the Farmer Input Support Programme.

Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Co-operatives, has annually awarded contracts to NCZ to produce fertiliser.

This has also cheered the Zambia National Farmers Union whose president Jervis Zimba said recently that the decision is an indication that government is interested to revamping the NCZ.

State eyes 80,000 mine jobs by 2015

19

GOVERNMENT has projected to create 80,000 jobs in the mining sector by 2015.

And Government is optimistic that it will reach the one million metric tonnes of copper production in the next four years.

Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Maxwell Mwale said the anticipated growth in job creation will be largely driven by increased mining activities across the country.

Mr Mwale cited Konkola North (KNNOCO) Project, Trident Mining owned by First Quantum MINING, Zonghi, Denson Mining Limited currently exploring in Southern Province, as some of the projects coming on stream in the industry, to contribute to job creation.

The minister was speaking during the recording of a Ministry of Finance television programme `Culture remodeling’ under the theme: `Mining sector performance” at the ministry headquarters in Lusaka on March 19.

He said employment levels in the mining sector is currently at 50,000 and would have been higher in 2015 had it not been for improved mining technological which has replaced manpower with equipment.

Mr Mwale expressed confidence that Government will hit the one million metric mark of copper production by 2015 due to increased mining activities.

“Prospects are bright for Zambia, with the re-opening of Chambeshi Mine and increased investment by West Orebody putting in US$160 million. Come 2015, we expect to reach a million tones,” Mr Mwale said.

ECZ cautious over delimitation

4

THE Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) may not be able to meet all the constituency delimitation expectations because each district submission will have to be weighed against submissions from all the other districts across the country, commissioner Grace Mulapesi said in Solwezi on Friday.

Speaking during the official opening of the North-Western Province delimitation Commission sitting at the Boma conference hall, Ms Mulapesi said Parliament will approve the number of constituencies.

“Since the last delimitation, the need for further delimitation has grown,” she said.

Ms Mulapesi explained that there have been a number of socio-economic and political changes in the respective districts, hence the need for the exercise.

She added that the commission will only consider constituency delimitation, while ward and polling district boundaries will remain unchanged due to the technical implications on the register of voters.

The last delimitation of boundaries was in 1991 when the number of constituencies was increased from 125 to the current 150.

Meanwhile Ms Mulapesi told the meeting that disparities in the population figures in a number of districts should be addressed to avoid allegations of vote rigging.

Her comments followed complaints from some district officials that population figures on the ground were not tallying with those in the voters register in some wards.

MMD, PF cadres clash

35

MMD and PF cadres cadres yesterday morning clashed, leaving some of them injured.

The Kanyama township residential area around Garden House Hotel, the venue of the PF conference, is an MMD stronghold.

The violence is said to have been triggered by some PF cadres who went to an MMD post and started removing the ruling party’s flags.

Kanyama MMD youth chairperson William Daka said that this infuriated his members, who resisted the attempt by the PF members to rip the MMD flags off the post.

The clash raged for about three hours, disrupting the flow of traffic on the Mumbwa Road until the police restored calm.

Lusaka Province officer commanding Mulekeni Zulu said the police dispersed the rival cadres.

University Teaching Hospital sources said three people were treated for injuries and that by press time two of them had been discharged.

Sata calls on small parties to back PF

169
Patrotic Front leader Michael Sata and his Members of Parliament

PATRIOTIC Front (PF) president Michael Sata yesetrday pleaded with opposition political parties to help his party win this year’s tripartite elections by forming loose political alliances with his party.

Mr Sata, during his address, bragged that the PF is the undisputable leading opposition political party that should be assisted by what he termed “small opposition political parties” to oust the MMD from government in this year’s general elections.

Mr Sata, who claimed the PF is the biggest opposition said his party needs to accommodate smaller opposition political parties to strengthen his chances of winning the elections this year.

He made the plea to other opposition political parties when he opened the Lusaka Province PF conference at Garden House Hotel on March 19.

The PF leader said opposition political parties can co-operate and unite even after the alliance it entered into with the UPND collapsed.

Mr Sata has blamed the MMD for the demise of the PF-UPND pact, alleging that the ruling party manipulated the opposition political party.

PF Lusaka Province chairperson Davies Chama has said his party regrets the collapse of the pact it formed with the UPND.

[pullquote]Mr Sata told Mandevu member of Parliament Jean Kapata to stop threatening the police that she would undress but should instead go to the Inter-City Bus Station and undress in protest against the suspension of the council.[/pullquote]

The UPND and the MMD have in recent weeks stated that the PF is not as strong as its leaders claim it is.

The PF has reportedly been sending emissaries to the UPND to try and keep the pact alive, but the UPND has categorically stated that the alliance is dead.

Meanwhile, Mr Sata has castigated PF Lusaka members of Parliament for not protesting against Government when the Lusaka City Council was suspended.

Mr Sata described the MPs as docile.

Mr Sata told Mandevu member of Parliament Jean Kapata to stop threatening the police that she would undress but should instead go to the Inter-City Bus Station and undress in protest against the suspension of the council.

DEC nabs two fraudsters

6

The Drug Enforcement Commission has arrested two foreign based computer experts for credit card fraud involving over nine thousand dollars belonging to three American Banks.

Balogun Bayo Rasheed, a Nigerian computer programmer was arrested together with Peter Lokomo Mote a Namibian Information Technology Consultant at a lodge in Lusaka.

DEC Public Relations Manager, John Nyawali said on Saturday that the two stole a total of nine thousand 243 dollars from M &T Bank, Chase Bank and American Express Bank all based in the US by using forged Visa Credit Cards belonging to some clients of the banks.

It is believed that they used a high tech gadget to replicate information contained on the original credit cards to swipe and transfer the funds online.

Five laptop computers containing obscene materials have since been seized from duo.

The two have been remanded in prison after being denied bond as they have no fixed aboard in Zambia.

Mr Nyawali also said the DEC has arrested a 42 year old accountant at an HIV/AIDS project for theft of over 100 million Kwacha of the Global funds.

Manyando Kaumba in his capacity as accountant for Child Hope Project stole the money donated to the organization By Zambia National AIDS Network ( ZNAN) meant for the HIV/AIDS patients and less privileged people in the community.

Mr Nyawali said Mr. Kaumba diverted the funds into his personal company account by purporting to have supplied food stuffs to the organization when in fact not.

He has been released on bond and will appear in court soon.

And Police on the Copperbelt have launched a manhunt for a security guard for alleged involvement in bank robbery where 46 million Kwacha was stolen in Luanshya.

Copperbelt Province Police Chief, Martin Malama says the robbers gained entry into a NATSAVE bank through the roof and blew up the safe using an unknown explosive.

Dr. Malama has told ZNBC News in Kitwe that the guard who was on duty on the night of the robbery has never been seen since then.

PF cadres attack ZNBC Journalists

35
PF cadres

Unruly Patriotic Front cadres, this morning attacked and nearly lynched a ZNBC crew that went to cover the PF Lusaka province conference and launch of the party manifesto.

The visibly drunk cadres, who where deployed at the entrance of Garden house motel blocked the crew from entering the venue and threatened to burn the vehicle together with the crew inside it.

The PF carders who were armed with sticks and stones harassed the journalists accusing them of not covering the PF leader Michael Sata.

Some cadres also attempted to grab the camera from ZNBC cameraman Cuthbert Miti.

One cadres hit the cameraman on the shoulder while others vented their anger on the vehicle banging it with sticks and fists.

When asked why a crew that was invited to cover the PF function was harassed, Patriotic Front Secretary General Wynter Kabimba claimed the cadres were not from his party.

Mr Kabimba told ZNBC by telephone that he had given strict instructions that all members of the press be allowed passage into the motel.

He said he was sorry that such an incident had occurred.

Its final – Hichilema

Hakainde Hichilema
Hakainde Hichilema

United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema has said that there is no possibility of reviving the political alliance with the Patriotic Front. Mr Hichilema said his party feels betrayed by the PF.

He said the PF has not been sincere in the way they have been handling the political pact for the past one year.

Mr Hichilema said his party will not reconcile with the PF over the Pact because the PF’s intensions of forming the Pact were not genuine.

He said the PF’s wish of wanting to go it alone has been granted and that the UPND will move on as a single party.

Mr Hichilema said accusing the UPND for the collapse of the pact is a mere public relations tool which the PF is putting across.

Mr. Hichilema was speaking to journalists in Lusaka today during the UPND’s card renewal exercise held at Mulungushi International Conference centre.

Early this week the PF General Secretary Wynter Kabimba accused the UPND of undermining the pact.

The UPND and PF formed a pact in 2009 with a view to remove the MMD from power.

President Banda does not qualify for gratuity says Msoni

30

The MMD Presidential candidate aspirant Nason Msoni has charged that Republican President Rupiah Banda does not qualify for gratuity under the current Presidential emolument Act.

Mr. Msoni says it is,therefore, an abuse of legislative powers if parliament goes ahead with the ongoing amendment of the Presidential emoluments Act.

He says dismantling existing laws for the purpose of accommodating individual interests is a dreadful way of enacting laws of the land.

The Presidential aspirant added that the essence of making laws is to protect the common good by disqualifying and barring those who do not qualify for certain privileges.

Mr. Msoni has also urged Members of Parliament not to amend laws in defiance of common sense.

The Bill that seeks to allow a serving head of State access benefits even if they have served less than three years has gone through to the committee stage.

Vice President George Kunda told parliament on Wednesday that the current presidential emoluments amendment Bill is unfair because it does allow a president who has served less than three years in office to access gratuity.

‘No calls for negotiations, pact is on,’ – Sata

100
Michael Sata
PF leader Michael Sata

Patriotic Front (PF) president Michael Sata says he can not call for negotiations to revive the PF/UPND pact because he still has a written memorandum showing that the pact is still on.

Mr. Sata maintained that as far as he is concerned the pact between his party and the UPND is still intact.

He said he can not start resolving problems that he did not create and that he is not interested in saying anything on the pact because he has not received any complaints from the UPND.

He added that based on the good leadership of late founding UPND leader Anderson Mazoka and the strength they had together, the pact can not just break like that.

And UPND spokesperson Charles Kakoma says Mr Sata should ask his secretary general Wynter Kabimba over the collapse of the PF/UPND pact.

Mr. Kakoma says Mr Kabimba was the first one who announced the death of the PF/UPND pact before the UPND.

The UPND Spokesperson says Mr Sata has now realized the value of the pact which he allowed to collapse.

Mr. Kakoma added that there is no chance that the PF/UPND pact will be revived.

Catholics re-states their position

0

THE Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC) has stated that homosexuality and lesbianism are seriously wrong and sinful acts which should not be allowed.

ZEC spokesperson Paul Samasumo said in response to a press query that under no circumstances can homosexual acts be approved because the natural sex partner for a man is a woman and vice versa.

“The Catholic Church’s constant and firm teaching on homosexuality acts is unequivocal.

“Basing itself on the Bible, the Catholic doctrine in the Catechism of the Catholic Church declares that homosexuality acts are contrary to natural law,” Father Samasumo said.

He said several homosexual persons argue that they were born that way, but studies to establish whether certain persons have a genetic disposition to homosexuality are inconclusive.

[pullquote]He said the number of men and women, even within Zambia, who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies, though small, is not negligible. Fr Samasumo said for some, this constitutes a major trial in their lives.[/pullquote]

Fr Samasumo said even if this was conclusively proven by science, it will not make homosexual behaviour acceptable.

He said in a similar manner, there are studies which suggest that some people are born with a hereditary disposition towards alcohol.

“No wonder one would, however, argue that someone ought to fulfill this inborn urge for alcoholism,” Fr Samasumo said.

He said homosexual acts are wrong but the church, nevertheless, acknowledges that the cause or genesis of homosexuality remains unexplained.

[pullquote]He said the church makes a distinction between homosexual orientation and inclination as opposed to the acts or behaviour of homosexuality.[/pullquote]

He said the number of men and women, even within Zambia, who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies, though small, is not negligible. Fr Samasumo said for some, this constitutes a major trial in their lives.

He said the church makes a distinction between homosexual orientation and inclination as opposed to the acts or behaviour of homosexuality.

Fr Samasumo said the Bible says God is faithful and He will not let anyone be tempted beyond their strength, but with the temptation, He will also provide a way of escape, that one may be able to endure.

Siliya asks Panji and Waza to prove allegations

98

MMD spokesperson Dora Siliya has asked Col. Kaunda and his brother to stop making wild allegations against the President and the party in the private media without providing proof.

Ms Siliya said in an interview in Lusaka that Zambians are not interested in Col. Kaunda’s tantrums because they want to see development.

She was reacting to the Kaunda brothers’ incessant attacks on President Banda and the MMD in the media.

In March 18’s story in The Post, Col Kunda was quoted as saying changing the law to give President Banda early gratuity is criminal. He also recently accused the MMD of planning to rig this year’s elections.

But Ms Siliya said if Col. Kaunda has nothing to talk about, he should go back to his farm.

“I really want to blast this Panji Kaunda. There is no way he can continue accusing President Banda and the MMD of rigging elections, which he cannot prove. It is impossible to rig elections in Zambia because every political party has monitors at polling stations and tallying centres.

“If he has nothing to talk about, he should just go back to his small farm. We are tired of his tantrums. If he thinks supporting (PF president Michael) Sata and his tolerance for homosexuality will win the PF elections, he is wasting his time,” she said.

Ms Siliya said Zambians have now realised that Col Kaunda, Mr Sata and the PF do not deserve votes.
“Panji and Sata are liars, and Zambians have realised that,” she said.
