The United Party for National Development (UPND) Patriotic Front (PF) Pact Co-spokesperson Given Lubinda says the pact is slowly closing-in in the number of seats in parliament.

Mr. Lubinda says the numbers of MMD seats is dwindling from 85 to 83 because the Pact is taking over at a sky rocketing speed.

In his congratulatory words in parliament today, Mr. Lubinda said the Pact scooping the Solwezi Central seat send serious signal to the rulling MMD.

Mr. Lubinda, who is also Kabwata Member of Parliament (MP), thanked the electorate in Solwezi Central constituency for making a wise decision to vote for the Pact candidate, Watson Lumba in a tightly contested polls.

‘I would like to thank and congratulate the Solwezi electorate for their wise decision to vote for our candidate, Watson Lumba. The MMD seats in parliament were 85 but now the seats are dwindling because the Pact is filling up the gap,” Mr. Lubinda said.

Last month, the UPND/PF Pact candidate Geoffrey Mwamba popularly known as GBM won the Kasama Central seat.

In yesterday’s elections, the UPND/PF Pact candidate Watson Lumba poured 5,669 against MMD‘s candidate Albert Chifita who got 4457 ,FDA’s Muhammad Kalela got 189, and independent candidate Thomas Kafula only managed a pantry 51 votes.

Earlier, Vice President George Kunda today in parliament also congratulated the UPND/PF Pact for the scooping the Solwezi Central parliamentary by-elections.

Mr. Kunda said he congratulated the Pact for fielding a right candidate. This was during the Vice President question time.

However, the Vice President condemned the recent violence that characterized the recent by-elections in the country.

He said government is concerned with the level of violence exhibited during recent by-elections but he implored the law enforcement officers to sternly deal the culprits.

This was after Luena MP Charles Milupi who asked the Vice President what government was doing to curb violence during elections.

Mr. Kunda said political parties who encourage their cadres to be violent should be ready to face the wrath of the law enforcement agencies saying violence in any election should not be entertained and called on political parties to encourage their members to exercise peaceful campaigns.

The Vice President said it is the duty of political parties to encourage their members to be peaceful during election noting that the country has enjoyed peace since independence in 1964.

United Party for National Development (UPND) President Hakainde Hichilema has thanked the electorate of Solwezi Central for giving the PF/UPND pact victory in yesterday’s parliamentary by election.

Mr Hichilema said the battle was not an easy one and that he was grateful to the people of Solwezi central for listening to his appeal and voting for Watson Lumba.

Speaking when he addressed a meeting at Solwezi show grounds this afternoon, Mr Hichilema urged the people in the Constituency to celebrate the UPND’s victory peacefully without intimidating other people.

He said the journey to 2011 has just begun adding that supporters should continue with the same spirit of uniting with purpose in order for them to continue winning elections.

The UPND leader urged the newly elected Member of Parliament to provide leadership as the victory is not his but for the people that gave him the votes.

He said Mr Lumba should identify issues of development and deal with them expeditiously as there is little time for him to be celebrating his victory.

And speaking at the same meeting newly elected Solwezi Central Member of Parliament Watson Lumba thanked the people of Solwezi Central for giving him an opportunity to represent them in parliament.

Mr Lumba said the victory was for the party and the constituency adding that he will endeavor to represent and serve the people of Solwezi central diligently.

The PF/UPND pact candidate Watson Lumba was yesterday elected as Solwezi Central Member of Parliament after polling 5,669 beating Albert Chifita of the MMD who got 4,457 votes in the parliamentary by election that came after the death of area Member of Parliament Ben Tetamashimba.

Centre for Elections and Governance (CEG) Trustee Gershom Musonda has welcomed Patriotic Front (PF) Roan Member of Parliament Chishimba Kambwili’s U-turn on Chines investment and appreciation of investors in improving Zambia’s economy and general welfare of the local people.

Mr.Musonda however said the MP may not be representing the views of the local people and may just be advancing his political advocacy.

He added that Mr Kabwili may have influenced the business transaction to some degree, especially if some members of the company’s tender committee may have known that Roan Bread Company belonged to Mr. Kambwili.

Mr Musonda said Kambwili has been opposing Chinese investment in Zambia and even incited workers and the general public against Chinese investors.
The trustee noted that that the MP has suddenly started praising the copper company after his company, Roan Bread, received a cheque for supply of goods and installation equipment at China Non-Ferrous Mining Corporation (CLM).

He said the political hatred fanned by PF and its MPs against investors, especially those of Asian origin, have led to industrial unrest in the mines and other sectors.

“The violence is not only justified, but also scaring away investors from Zambia as other poor countries remain stable and welcome investors in a peaceful atmosphere” he said.

He has since urged the electorate in all constituencies to start evaluating the performance of MPs in preparation for the 2011 presidential and parliamentary elections to assess whether their leader’s public conduct and views respond to local needs.

Centre for Elections and Good Governance (CEG) Trustee Gershom Musonda has welcomed the election of Patriotic Front (PF)/United Party for National Developmrnt(UPND)pact candidate Watson Lumba as new Member of Parliament for Solwezi Central.

Mr Lumba polled 5, 669 against his closest rival Albert Chifita for the MMD polled 4,457 in yesterday’s by-elections. Forum for Democratic Alternative (FDA) Muhammad Kalela got 189 while Thomas Kafula got 51 votes.

Mr Musonda said in a statement to ZANIS, today, said the out come of the elections shows that the violence and negative media reports against the ruling MMD in the urban areas is benefiting the opposition while the voters in rural areas seem to appreciate the MMD government’s efforts in improving their well being.

He maintained that the reported violence in the elections such as the Solwezi Central seat are perpetuated by cadres from Lusaka and the Copperbelt provinces whose campaign teams always hold feasts prior to field work.

He added that number of voters who participated in the elections is less than the registered voters saying for this reason , Mr. Lumba should bear in mind that he is not carrying a majority vote of the entire constituency.

On the violence and the shedding of blood witnessed during campaigns between UPND/PF and MMD cadres, Mr Musonda said this led to uneven ground for competition, increased apathy and a number of spoiled votes.

He added that this has definitely made Mr Lumba to find it difficult to walk the streets of Solwezi with his head high.

” We appeal to the newly elected MP to extend a hand of friendship to his closest rival, denounce and apologise for the chaos, and wash off the human blood on his ballot papers as he walks into Parliament to convince the general public that he is a democrat,” the CEG Trustee says in a statement.

Mr.Musonda has also advised Mr Lumba to depart from the language of violence and the Language of hatred preached by a named opposition MP whose statement he said have become contrary to what the electorate expect of him as a parliamentarian.

The CEG trustee added that it is happy with with the competition between the MMD and the PF/UPND he said is a clear testimony that the winner sweated for the votes as his closest rival gave him a good run for his money.
