Zambia top Group A at the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in Kenya after beating former leaders Ethiopia 1-0 this afternoon at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi.
Herve Renards side tops Group A on maximum six points from two matches while Ethiopia drop to second on three points level with Kenya who eliminated Djibouti in the late kickoff at the same venue today.
The win means Zambia have almost certainly booked their quarterfinal place with a game to spare ahead of their final match against Djibouti on Friday in Nairobi.
Zambia’s lone goal of the match was scored by striker James Chamanga on the half-hour mark after pouncing on a loose ball from Ethiopian goalkeeper Assefa Dawit.
Chamanga’s goal was his third of the tournament after his brace against Kenya on Day One of action last Saturday.
Then Ethiopia wasted a chance for a share of the points in the 40th minute from the spot after Jacob Banda saved a penalty following an Emmanule Mbola handball.
Kenya meanwhile stayed in the hunt for the best third placed side slot for next week’s quarterfinals on December 7 after dispatching of Djibouti 2-0 in the second kickoff at Nyayo.
Hosts Kenya are third in Group A on three points, level with Ethiopia above them in second place whom they face on Friday in Nairobi.
Djibouti are stuck at the bottom on zone point.
