A 20 year old man of Shitambuli village in Sonkotwe area in Milenge district has allegedly impregnated his 19 year old aunt to the disappointment their relatives.
Luapula Province Police Commissioner Malcom Mulenga confirmed the development to ZANIS in a telephone interview.
Mr. Mulenga has named the duo as Barbara Mupeta and Chisala Maxwell of the same abode.
He said the duo were reported to the police by their grandmother who wanted police to help resolve the matter as they had failed to find a solution because the man denied being responsible for the pregnancy.
Mr Mulenga said the duo have allegedly been having canal knowledge on several occasions since December 2012 and the girl is 4 months pregnant.
He said the duo have been charged with incest and will appear in court soon. Meanwhile a 27 year old man of Lyafye village in chief Mulongwe of Samfya district has died after being attacked by a crocodile as he was fishing on Lake Bangweulu.
Luapula Province police commissioner Malcom Mulenga confirmed the development and identified the deceased as Tembe Mwewa.
He said chief Mulongwe of Mbabala Island reported the matter to police in Samfya. He said the incident occurred on Wednesday around 07:00hrs and the body of the deceased has since been buried.
Those are adults, as much as incest is not tolerated in most Zambian cultures, there is totally nothing one can do if two people have such feelings for themselves! A pity for the man who went looking for food and ended up in the jaws of the croc, MHSRIP!
Adults they may be but have acted against the order of nature and therefore must answer to the charge of incest. Incest is not only culturally but also genetically wrong as it introduces harmful recessive genes in the population.
Here is what the Penal Code Cap 87 of the laws of Zambia states:
1. “Any person who has carnal knowledge of a woman who to his knowledge is his Mother, sister, half sister, daughter or granddaughter commits the offence termed incest on females and shall upon conviction be liable to imprisonment for a period not less that 5 years.
2. “Any woman who permits any male person to carnally know her knowing him to be his brother, half brother, father, Grandfather or Son commits the offence of incest on males and upon conviction is liable to imprisonment for a period not less than 5 years.

Being recessive, they are dominated by healthy genes from an unrelated person in marriage union. But when close relatives marry, they are brought together (homozygous recessive) and increase the incidence of such diseases as Sickle cell anemia and hemophilia.

In an African setup especially here in Zambia one is allowed to marry a cousin. The issue of incest to some extent doesn’t apply.
