RB asks Korean Investors to invest in the troubled NCZ

Share

President Rupiah Banda has appealed to the republic of Korea to consider investing in the troubled Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia (NCZ).

Mr. Banda says he is aware that Korea has the appropriate advanced technology to rehabilitate the fertiliser plant.

He says agriculture is critical to the economic development of Zambia and a recapitalized NCZ can provide cheaper fertiliser for peasant farmers.

The President was speaking at state House on Thursday, when he received letters of credence from Korea’s Ambasador designate to Zambia, Oh Jae-Hack.

And Mr. Banda said he is happy, the Korean resources Corporation- KORES has begun to partner with Zambian Miners.

The President called for more partnerships to enhance mining activity in the country.

He also commended the Korean government for its continued assistance to Zambia in mitigating the effects of floods in some parts of the country.

And Presenting his letters of credence, Ambassador OH said Zambia stands out as one of Africa’s most successful examples of political stability and sound economic development.

He said his government is looking forward to working closely with the Zambian government in its efforts to further achieve economic development by sharing development experiences of the two countries.

Ambassodor Jae-Hack said it is gratifying to note that the bilateral relations between the two countries have continued to grow, since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1990.

Meanwhile, President Banda has appointed and sworn in Simon Kachimba, a former miner, as new Labor and Social Security Deputy Minister.

He urged Mr. Kachimba to help resolve the challenges of job losses, especially in the mining sector, where some companies are threatened with closures, following reductions in copper prices on the world market.

President Banda expressed confidence in the newly appointed deputy minister, adding that he is qualified and well placed for job to deal with the challenges the country is faced with in the labor sector.

  1. The solution here is to allow local competent business people take over if GRZ thinks nationalising NCZ is a flaw.

  2. Mr banda nganamufilwakutimwalanda because everytime you stand is about investors from out side zambia why not our investors. atase mulefwaya fye mulelyamo.

  3. RB is looking like some blind man i know here in Solwezi in this picture.
But this president can lomba (beg) and lobby for investment in a pathetic and from questionable sources.
Imagine Obama asking Cubans to invest in America. He should be seen less and less going about with his begging bowl if he has to gain respect. The president should be occupied with policy issues that will attract investments and leave the demeaning job of begging to his ministers. That way his office will be given respect by investors.

Kavindele with money, wanted to put up a rail line from Chingola to Solwezi but what happened? Unfortunately it was ba Levy’s govt that grabbed it from him. The govt doesnt seem to support Zambian local investors.

Zambians with money are being overlooked, you dont have to go far, look at Kavindele and his wonderfull railway project, politics :-w

Bloggers how was your lunch? I have some imbwa to give to those mbebas (read Bembas) out there in the big D.

Is there any major difference between the Koreans and the Chinese? Don’t they both look the same? Am not racist and neither am I xenophobic but I think am getting fade up with these people. What investment are they bringing here considering that some of them are actually on parole from their prisons for good behaviour? What is their value if they cannot even marry us yet our brothers would like to hitch up with some of them – read it on another thread?

  7. Coming to the Presido’s appearance:
    Oh my God!!!!
…My niece has just screamed away from my laptop screen.
The man’s face is too THICK to be goodlooking. Anyway thanks to HipHop stars, he trying hard to look like one with those shades under the clouds of rains..

  8. Why is it that our gov’t likes foreign investors has he tried the local ones before entaining those koreans they are just the same as chinese investors they just use zambians and pay them peanuts. only afew individuals who makes deals with these people benefit.

  9. #22 Pea-nuts are better than No-nuts. Its simple. NCZ is not lucrative and viable. If it were people (be it Zambians or otherwise) would have come forth.

I don’t think government can refuse a Zambian to invest in NCZ if they had the money. At least not in the state NCZ is today. So lets not blame government. We are always sayings Zambians. But who is a Zambian? No one is more Zambian than you so if you don’t have the money to invest yourself then no one else has. No wonder they say there is no sugar daddy because even a sugar daddy thinks that its not him but the next person.

  10. so kavindele had the money,i thought he was lobbying from financiers who gave him conditions among with was for lumwana mines to sign a contract binding them to the use of the railway line to be ferrying all their products and when the lumwana mine sponsors refused fyonse kwati epo fyapenene nabene ba lupiya bakako.somebody enlighten me please

  11. No sane Zambian can invest in NCZ unless we discover and start mining phosphate. so let the foreiners try it maybe they have a technology that will use other cheaper raw materials to be able to sale at a Govnt determined price and make profit. If there is any Zambian who can manage to produce fertiliser and be able to to make a profit at K100 000 per bag please get in touch with me i can introduce you to the development agency and if your plans are viable i can equally take you to the CEEC for capital if need be.

” Why is it that our gov’t likes foreign investors has he tried the local ones before entaining those koreans they are just the same as chinese investors they just use zambians and pay them peanuts. only afew individuals who makes deals with these people benefit. ”

The essence of foreign investor is that you import investment only to export profits. Profits that should go to agriculture and infrastructure development instead. They are mortgaging the future of unborn generations, ensuring that they too grow up in poverty.

  13. In fact
Zambians should strip him off his immunity to the briefs so he is tried like F.T.J. He went to Mfuwe with all his children and grand-children on tax money! (when only Thandiwe and those small kids of her with the man are entiltled) In fact, some people are still living in chalets there claiming RB will settle the bills..but from which pocket? it is obvious….national treasury

  14. There is only one exception, for which I would allow foreign investors in Zambia. That is for industries or businesses that:

    1) have very little gross profit (total revenues – cost of revenue) and
    2) demand that every single cent of their cost is spent in the Zambian economy – all suppliers and employees, must be Zambian.

That is the only condition under which it would make sense to allow investors to keep all their profits and not tax them, as is the case today.

  15. please koreans come fast and bail us here in kafue, twachula pafula. we dont care whether you are black or yellow as long as your coming will put a plate of nshima on our tables/floors.

  16. President RB Banda,we have a young Zambian man,Mr Cardson kabwe,in pain suffering from a heart problem whom your MMD GRZ sent to Russia to study Medicine in St. Petersburg. Please, do something as you are his responsibilities. He requires your argent attention Mr President. I,as an ordinary Zambian, have tried to do my best for the young man,but it is you Mr President who can insure that C. Kabwe receives medical surgery in the next 5 hours. Do your job President RB Banda and your irresponsible 17 yr old MMD GRZ since it’s been 4 months without GRZ attention.
The details of him are in ww w.lusakatimes. com/ ?p =7594
This investers can be looked at later as we have an emmergency in Russia.

  17. Continuing from comment 43, what I am also saying is that if industries are too profitable, they should not be in foreign hands. That is the only way to maximize the industry’s impact on the Zambian economy.

Or, if they become too profitable, they should have a windfall profit tax, or better yet, not be in foreign hands at all.

  18. Zambian Airways is a sad story but there are lessons to be leant by the Ncito Brothers as well as the Post.Running an airline is not the same as being in court or writing newspaper articles.Koreans should come if they are willing.

  19. 48. Maestro Hhehhehhehhe continued.
Chief Justice only got sick some one week ago and you 17 yr old MMD GRZ evacuated him to South Africa for Specialist treatment of his heart problems, but Mr Cardson kabwe who has been sick for the last 4 months, in turn missing lectures of his Medicine university program, has not received any serious attention from your office – which at some point included Disaster management.
The cost of having him opereated in Russia is abour 4 times cheaper than bring back him as a dead person, which your GRZ MR President RB Banda will have to do if the worst happens to Mr C. Kabwe.
Please,HELP us,Zambians,Sir President RB Banda now.

” #40 It is Xtremely sad…and let me just cry ”

Don’t get sad, get mad. 🙂

We should make it clear to government representatives at every occasion, that they are there to serve us, not foreign investors. That every time they make a secret deal, they are committing treason, because they are betraying the public trust and the national interest for personal interest.

Most of all, we need politicians who will invest in agriculture in the short term, because of the dire global economy. We need comprehensive agricultural reform to secure the food supply, provide millions of jobs and develop the country in a way that involves the people, not a few investors.

  21. I just read the heading and did not want to read anymore of what this man has said. Why does he believe in foreigners? The other time he was promoting hedge cutter at sate house, then zimbabwean chap at kasaba bay, then Indian and Chinese in mines and now he is talking of koreans at NCZ.I am shocked with the behaviour of this president, he is not a proud Zambian. These are mistakes is zambians make by votng for rotten chaps

It also deals with providing healthcare by redistributing national revenues to local authorities, making them directly responsible for healthcare, education, policing and utilities.

  23. Use my PAYE to re-capitalise NCZ so that my Father in the Village can buy affordable fertilizer.Where does my Tax go?You lied to my Father in the Village that Fert would be sold at 50pin,Im so sure that the spirits of those who will die of hunger will never rest.Do you use it for unnecesary travels to Libya & Nigeria where we havent seen any fruits?.After becoming President,U hve concentrated on travels only in that Presidential Jet and to Mfuwe to do Holiday making, its very unfair.

  28. Ladies and gentlemen,
Zambia needs investors; whether local or foreign is not the issue, the issue is to develop our country.
If local investors want to invest, no one will stop them and if foreign guys wants to come no one should stop them.
Those of us who are crying out that we need local investors instead of foreign, why dont you invest, instead of just investing in blogging at LT. do you think that is the investments Zambia needs, blogging at LT? Not at all.
What value is there in staying idle in the name of indefinitely waiting for local investors until they show up, if at all they will?
Yes, foreign investors come please we need you because local investors are not there.

  29. The last time LP Mwanawasa ordered GRZ to invest in Nitrogen chemicals and alot of tax payer billions were used to revive NCZ. They appointed……..I`ve even forgotten his name but he was a Dr something. I think it was Dr Kalima. Some MMD cader. Within a short time all the money went down the drain, the guys was fired for misappropriation and was about to be prosecuted. He was lucky he died in a car crash. Are you sure you want GRZ to invest more money in NCZ?

  30. Ba Teta bena bale suminafye mu parliament. ninshi tata?? nga mwabepusha Bwezaniponi imwe kanshi batilafye Bwezani Ruphia alande.
Evry time he is in parliament he only thinks of RB.
It seems Teta understand Rb than any zambian.

  31. LT today it has been about Chinese, Indians and Koreans. Obama had his first meeting with White House staff. He talked about having a transparent government and about advancing the interests of citizens.

  32. Fine!

I understand your point and your frustrations. A lot of people think that we are simply pretending to be a poor nation with no credible local investors. Anyway, someone has planted a lie in them so they cant see.

  33. Why cant we zedians abroad invest in NCZ and appoint qualified board members among ourselves,it might work other channels have failed. **==

  34. When a woman is desperate to get married, she would marry everything that comes her way. We cannot ask every Jim and Jack to come to our rescue. I wonder what will ask the Vatican Nucio to invest in. Cathedrals? It is sad, Korea cannot be investors. RB cannot be asking every to give him something to put put to put in his tummy.

  35. Very soon all companies will be run by foreign infestors or investors so that when tey pull out after making alot of money in the name of falling market prices, all Zambians will be jobless.

  36. The gist of the matter is that LOCAL INVESTORS are not just there. By default LOCAL INVESTORS would be the prefered, but just not there, not there, we there. We cant pretend that they are there.

  37. 78. Fine!
i wish you could shout that into the ears of all students blogging on LT. you have hit the nail on the head these investments being taken up have been idle for so long under the watchfull eyes of Zambians yet no single Zambian has taken an initiative to develop them. Some of them are even sayng capital, what capital are they talking about when banks are looking for people with Viable investment plans to fund, the CEEC has also come on board and instead of developing viable investment strategies to access those funds they are busy :d/ on LT. i went to the CEEC offices they were only old men there and the process was strait forward, where are the sharp LT bloggers??

  38. New information from relible sources is that the man is now looking for foreigners to invest in UNZA and CBU.b-):))

  39. Even us from Kola (Angola) when we have money we shall come and invest in Zambia if its yields are better than home. So if you don’t like scenario like that, tough luck. Obviously the people of Kafue will be very happy with it but some clever fella having three meals a day in the worlds fair climes has beefs with that!!! Some Zambians!

You question Korea’s capacity to invest in Zambia? You must have little or no knowledge about Korea.
Do you know that Korea is ranked #16 on the ‘wolrd’s biggest economies list’?
Ladies and gentlemen, I think this is why people like myself, engines, ‘anonymous’ and a few others with knowledge have so much difficult educating people on LT, because majority talk not because they know what to say but because they feel like saying something.
The debates here are more of emotions and feelings rather than that of knowledge and logic. My collegues, engines, ‘anonymous’, Metro Hehe.. etc, our work is not very easy.

  51. Mwana Muchende, im good man thanks.
lolie Pop, thanks and welcome but let me warn you that some of these guys that yyou listed are not friendly. I hope they wont end up chasing you from LT. Join the winning team, the team that fears no one not even the famous Prof…

  53. Ok people…..
    Questions:

What is worng with boma nationalising Zambian Airways and NCZ? Both are potential money makers?????

What is wrong with having these 2 companies enlisted on the stock exchange??????

Zambians within the country and abroad have the money but….. politics and corruption make us think twice about pumping our money into the economy. We don’t want to loose our money while some greedy individuals continue getting fat and lazy off our sweat.

Look at Kavindele, he has the brains and what it takes to run a business but boma messes him up at every chance because they are scared of looking like amateurs.

  55. Bloggars. Stop critisizing for the hake of it. If we have Zambian investors, why cant they come up and take NCZ and invest in it? What we have in Zambia are just dealers who make a bit of pocket change by being mine suppliers, Government suppliers etc.and then pose in big cars bought using borrowed money. Right now I`m sure they are waiting for Koreans to invest in NCZ so that they can become suppliers to NCZ. They also specialize in getting cats by being middle men in small deals.

  56. 78. Fine!,

Investors don’t develop the country, they make profits.

” If local investors want to invest, no one will stop them and if foreign guys wants to come no one should stop them. ”

Except for the government. Why do you think they are giving so many breaks to foreign investors? Because there are LOTS of obstacles in the way of Zambians. Put there by government, and government can take these restrictions away. If they can give LOANS to foreign companies, they can give loans to Zambian businesses. If they can exempt them from tax, they can exempt Zambian startups from from tax. Why have special economic zones, and not apply the benefits to the entire economy?

  57. 101. Sony Ericsson Phiri
check my blog on #39. NCZ is unviable in its current form partly because of the cost of phosphate, the technology in use against purchasing power of our peasant farmers when it comes to fertiliser. However my guess is that an invester will have more efficient technology probably outomated to minimise waste on both raw material and throughput. if outomated labour cost will come down as well. my dear Sony Ericsson Phiri thats my guess i hope thats the strategy with the koreans

  58. 132. CHE,

” If we have Zambian investors, why cant they come up and take NCZ and invest in it? ”

How about the government gets up and starts developing and nurturing their own ‘investors’? In quotation marks, because we’re not talking about investment but development – investment is only a small part of the process.

And what is with the passive-aggressive attitude to Zambians? Why are foreign business people seen as better than local ones?

It is time the government started to develop Zambian potential – business schools, loans, infrastructure support.

Check out Keiretsu and Chaebol, and see how Japan and Korea set up their own private sector manufacturing industries.

  59. Hi Lolie pop. Ku chi chun cha. Meaning I’m out of here in Chinese. Baby C, Rashid, Nine Chale, Jamaco, Zoe, Sony Ericsson, and the rest….kwa ci cho che Chinese (meaning I have started learning Chinese). You can be deported.

Anyways, this does look good. I know that RB is genuinely concerned to do something about the ailing economy but this is not the way to go about it. Desperate situations do not call for desperate measures…

  61. Depends on rate of return on investment. If price they can sell fertilizer is high enough they may be interested. However this conflicts with national goal of cheap fertilizer for farmers.

  62. Here is another note. You cannot sing the praises of the mining industry, and complain about the fact that Zambian industries and the government are undercapitalized.

Billions (US dollars) were lost to the economy because the mines were privatized and in foreign hands.

  63. Just throw the thing away, it is rotten. No invester with an ounce of green credentials will invest in this delapidated earth killing plant

  64. #138. MrK
You say, “Investors don’t develop the country, they make profits.”
This is part of our (myself, engines, ‘anonymous’, ..Hehehe) difficult.
How can you, MrK, separate investment from development? You have a lot of courage to make such a statement in a public place like LT. I will be amazed if you are serious.
Honestly speaking for me to continue to hold you in high esteem, i just have to convince myself that you dont mean it; you are just cracking a joke.
Even if you dont want to ever use any economic principles, whatever you wish to use your statement stands out as an invalid statement.

  65. Imagine millions of Koreans & Chinese on the march in Africa – seizing the factories and the mines and the utilities and power from the Africans.

Before we can talk about whether NCZ is viable or not we need to understand what constitutes viability of a company.
The factors that constitute viability are the same that differentiate men from boys and women from girls.
What one potential investor see as non-viable is what another sees as viable. I hope you are aware of Anglo-America/Indians – KCM issue.
What eyes do you use to see, and what do you want to see.
On the same plot of land one man will see a three bedroomed house with a servants quarter and a small chiken run, while another sees 30 story tower housing manys business; how viable is this plot of land?

  70. Due to lack of working capital, NCZ has targeted its marketing efforts on a few local entities and Government agencies. NCZ has also sought to reach small scale producers by introducing smaller packages of fertilizer which are sold through retail outlets. Major competition exists for the company from imported fertilizers considering the lack of financial capacity of NCZ to meet the requirements of the country.

The government could help by banning the importation of all fertilizer not produced by the NCZ, or slap tariffs to make the NCZ’s product more efficient.

NCZ needs a better business model and support from parliament, not Korean investors.

Excellent! This is the most sensible question that each Zambian should ask himself/herself before we start insulting our President for trying to find a solution to the old NCZ story,it’s high time a foreign buyer was sort, the Koreans just like the Chinese & Japanese would solve the problems that NCZ.
People who have money in Zambia prefer to be suppliers to the govt, that way they rip off the govt big time,i felt angry when i read that local(Zambian) bidders to rehabilitate Independence Stadium quoted 3 times more than what the Chinese quoted to build a new stadium from scratch, what a shame!

  73. 167. MrK,
“The government could help by banning the importation of all fertilizer not produced by the NCZ, or slap tariffs to make the NCZ’s product more efficient.”
I totally agree with you there; this is the talking that can bring progress.
But of course this needs to be done in a careful and well planned out manner to avoid food insecurity.
At the time the govt plans to ban importation of firtilizers, NCZ must be given enough capacity to not only meet the farming demand but assure a surplus just in case of a little more investment in agric than before. An abrupt policy without this care would turn out to be deadly.

Must we always go backwards?

  77. 174. Sony Ericsson Phiri,
To be honesty you sound a little more supersticius than business and economy. I am not here to rule out or endorse your ideas, but i thought pointing that out was necessary; your ideas are becoming more supersticius in nature.

  78. CLASSIC NOVEL TO BE EDITED BY #93.Anonymous

It is in the year 2100, a century since the Government of Republic of Zambia gave away land, rivers, minerals, public companies and its people all in the name of foreign investment. The sons of the Chinese and Indian nationals have now multiplied exceeding the onwers of the land. They own all the wealth, power, education, water and women too.

Independence has now become meaningless to the majority of the People. The efforts of our fore fathers 150 years ago all washed down..A new struggle has now emerged to restore the dignity of our people. Will it be easy?

  79. An insight to the possibilities of what life will be 100 years from now if no one stops the striping of Zambian’s wealth all in the pretext of investments.

The question is, can MMD be trusted at this rate they are going??????? The fate is in your hands ladies & gentlemen!!!

  80. I am a firm believer in Foreign Direct Investment as a necessary catalyst to boost growth for an economy, but when foreign investors are being courted only for the purpose of taking over already existing plants and without encouragement to make new investments tied with technology transfer, then I am afraid, we do not have anything positive to look forward to in terms of development.

  81. HYUNDAI,DAEWOO,SAMSUNG,LG are all reputable international recognised companies unless you live in pluto then you might not have heard about them.
Any the common thing about them is that they are all from SOUTH KOREA. Mwebena zambia amuti shani?

  82. At long last we have a President who understands that to develop you need capital. Show me a Zambian who has $2 billion to rehabilitate Nitrogen Chemicals ! Mr Musonda and Kabwe ? If WE HAVE ZAMBIANS WITH CAPITAL WHO IS STOPING THEM TO INVEST RIGHT NOW. Zambia airways needs investors ! So go you lound mouths ZAmbians and invest let us see.

  83. 172. Fine!,

” I totally agree with you there; this is the talking that can bring progress. But of course this needs to be done in a careful and well planned out manner to avoid food insecurity. ”

Absolutely. And considering the high price of fertilizer, demand is not the major constraint. I would bet that the best managers and workers at the plant could be really useful in creating a successful business model. They’ll know like no one else what the biggest problems are. Once you have a business plan, you can go after financing. The GRZ could even help in getting financing form the African Development Bank or many other banks.

  84. well that indeed is aphotographic image from the President himself…His Sonny, Babyc, Nine Chale and rest of the good guys from these ends…I am in now a Nomad moving up and down…but I wi9ll forever Hold my country in high esteems even Nyama Soya Sales the last piece of this Land to asia…

  87. #10. There are no Zambian capitalists with money.Remember when people were going on about Hakainde being welath in 2006? When he declared his assets they amounted to $6m. And with due respect to the guy; this is just a professional footballers salary. The only way Zambians can invest is through listed companies on LUSE.

  88. RB is right to call for foreign investment in NCZ. Its too much of govt paying people who just report for work and do nothing to generate money for their salaries!. Engines, fine Cheese… thanks for your mature and valuable comments. These kids who have invaded LT are really down grading a once valuable site where serious brains wud discuss issues.Which Zambian has the money and technology to invest in NCZ kids? Dont confuse NCZ with the Tuntembas where you buy Lollipops and popcorns when you knock off from school, this is a serious plant which requires serious updated technology!

  89. I remember reading on the ZPA website at the time, that there were projects that Zambians were prohibited from bidding on.

What is it with the hostility to Zambian investors?

  90. Zambians have wealth , we just do not know how to mobilize our funds to make concerted moves. These same investors that some of you are worshipping do not even have the money, they finance most of their endevours via debt finance (borrowing from banks). What these investors do can easily be done by zambians . If zambians could organise and merge mutual funds and hedge fund managers they would have the same economic power as the investors. Some of you are deluded to think these investors have the same money they are investing sitting in bank accounts

  91. These investors organise themselves into Mutual fund groups with a fund manager as the head. And then they go to the worlds commercial banks and produce a detailed structure of their investment plan and then they are loaned money . they bring that money to zambia and then make profits and repay their bank loans . They then end up owning something they could never afford individually and continue to reap the profits. Thats the story of the investors in Zambia , they are not as rich as most of you imagine they are just smart with their planning. This is one of the things i highlighted in psuhing for dual citizenship because zambians abroad can form their own Mutual fund groups

Zambia is a very rich country save for the mismanagement of our resources that has been done over 44 years through overstaying in political power, corrupt due to excitement, etc.

  93. This is why you see investors are selling investment reports on Zambia on lulu .com and amazon. com the reports are selling for £50 a piece. Those same investment reports are why these investors are loaned a lot of money because the banks know their are guaranteed returns.

  94. Too much talk and no money to develop your country. Just sale your country to the highest bidder. How much are you worthy anyway.

THE QUESTION IS, WILL YOU AS A ZAMBIAN INVESTOR GET THE SAME TREATMENT THAT THESE FOREIGNERS GET (A WARM WELCOME!)?

  96. Zambians don’t have wealth. If they had the wealth they wouldn’t have been crying for foreing investors. You have made yourselves poor because of dull policies.

The zambian government are puppets to money. They only reason why they treat zambian investors funny is because we do not invest as much as the chinese or more correctly we do not invest collectively like the chinese. Zambians are a powerful entity collectively but individually are finances are laughable. Imagine this if Igo to the zambia government with a mere £30000 as an investor I would be laughed at and treated as a nobody, but if I took a hundred zambians with £30000 each and formed an umbrella organisation they will dance to our tunes because we would collectively have £3 million. That is to simply put it how these investors with deep pockets work

  99. 216 Joe !!
Its Math time!! Every Zambian is waiting for one to stand up!! It will never happen!! We all have to stand up AND ADD TOGETHER what we have!! Then comes in the Plan etc!!

  104. Nine Chale I know you!! You will be having supper using the laptop as a plate so that you do not miss a thread. You still want to be Numbala l-) iwe!!

  105. if RB had a head he would get his cabinet together and devise a plan of saving NCZ.NCZ is not even that big a plant and won’t need more than $5 million or so to be refurbished but instead our president would rather go around in those dark glasses begging.shame shame shame. :-l:-l:-l

  106. Bloggers we need to be clear where we stand, one moment we are advocating for local investor empowerment the other moment we are agreeing with the Govt not to bail out local investors such as Zambian Airways. We need to be very clear on what we are supporting whether it is the foreign investors e.g Chinese, Indians, Nigerians etc or the local Zambian investors.

  107. So many great posts to respond to. Ok.

    159. Fine!,

” How can you, MrK, separate investment from development? ”

    Absolutely, I’m serious. 🙂

Look at the effect of the privatisation of the mines. To export that much copper artificially cranked up GDP. However, what was the real effect on the economy? Did they pay taxes, so the government could upgrade infrastructure – no, nor did they upgrade infrastructure. In fact, they degrade infrastructure, with their tonnes of raw materials. They did not share profits with the government either. And they were not obliged to pay a living wage to workers. Are they allowed to import all their supplies – yes. The multiplier effect is minimal.

  108. 183. Twachula Pafula

” … when foreign investors are being courted only for the purpose of taking over already existing plants and without encouragement to make new investments tied with technology transfer, then I am afraid, we do not have anything positive to look forward to in terms of development. ”

I would only look to business with very high cost to profit ratio, and then demand that every cent of costs (suppliers and workers) is spent within Zambia. That is the only way we could excuse ‘investors’ not paying taxes, and not sharing profits with the government. And include a windfall tax with every contract or make it the law.

  109. 209. Joe.

” Zambians don’t have wealth. If they had the wealth they wouldn’t have been crying for foreing investors. ”

Actually they’re doing both. We have wealth – it is called copper, cobalt, cole, etc. There are banks which lend for the purpose of large development projects. So it is not necessary to sign away the country just to watch foreign businesses do their thing in Zambia. FDI is ‘in vogue’ with the IMF, which is supplying 1/3 of the state’s budget. Thta is why the leading politicians are crying for foreign investors, when the answers are to be found right at home.

The government should be involved with financing, if only to facilitate or provide insurance.

Please everyone, google chaebol or keiretsu, and check out how the Korean and Japanese governments set up their manufacturing sector. The same principles can be applied to agriculture.

  111. Zambia already has parastatals, so let’s really get financing going and develop the country ourselves.

The Japanese Keiretsu or business groups all started out as banks. How is that for getting funding? 😉

  112. # 163. MrK
You are talking of GASSIFICATION…hahahahahahahahaha! Takwaba INCINERATION pa Zed naiwe! may be Pyrosis, but sat…takwaba, pyrosis being the latest tech. Takwba..it is not possible and it shall never be..not in 100 years.

  113. As much as Zambia needs foreing investors, it also needs empower its own people. If it does not do that then the locals will never appreciate the development the foreing investors are bringing to the country.

  114. Ulibwanji oonse? Neo nili chete.
Looks like asians are interested in zed these days and NCZ has suffered at the hands of Chiluba, LPM while RB may rescue it. Just maybe

    😕

  115. We are currently enjoying good bilateral relations with you the people of zambia. I suggest that in order to give leverage and guidance to the zambian economy, we sign a memorandum of unerstanding which mandates 45% ownership of all zambian owned parastatles by South African investors(especially in the mining and tourism sectors). We can explore further sectors and offer our technical and financial muscle.

  116. Gud news, Korean company LG will start making flatscreen TVs in Chibolya and Kanyama. then huyndais in Misisi!

  117. 257. Casey Khisho,

    ” You are talking of GASSIFICATION…hahahahahahahahaha! ”

Please read carefully, I was not, I was quoting the ZPA website (in boldface).

” Takwba..it is not possible and it shall never be..not in 100 years. ”

I literally don’t know what you mean by that.

  118. 258. Joe.

” As much as Zambia needs foreing investors, it also needs empower its own people. If it does not do that then the locals will never appreciate the development the foreing investors are bringing to the country. ”

It is all about how you interpret development. Is it simply roads and factories? Or does it mean economic prosperity that is shared by everyone in the population, and not just indirectly?

The only way we can justify foreign investment, is if the impact on teh economy is maximal, where today it is minimal. Attract only those industries where costs are very high, and demand that every cent of that cost is spent in the Zambian economy.

  119. If profits are high, demand a windfall tax and enforce it strictly. Suppliers should always be Zambian, not foreign businesses doing business in Zambia. Workers should be very well paid.

However, even better is if we would revive the parstatals and cooperatives using Zambian money and if necessary, borrowing just like ‘foreign investors’ themselves do.

Workers and other industry veterans could be instrumental in creating profitable business plans and business models, which can be presented to banks and the government to obtain financing.

  120. He looks like Ray Charles! Why didn’t the local investors offer. I’m sure if they were interested they could’ve done. If we let foreign investors take over everything we’ll be in the brown stuff in years to come. Already rivers are being polluted by caresless Chinese investors and we Zambians will be the ones to suffer as our waterways, fihing industry and health will suffer. This is just one example. Look at what happened in the mines. NCZ has extremely toxic and hazardous chemicals and govt should be CAREFUL who they choose be it local or international investors.

RB looks like Ray Charles in that picture! For septogenarian, he doesn’t look bad though.

  122. we will always be crying and begging for investors, at the expense of the local business man. do you mean to tell me that NCZ can not be run profitably by local chaps, for how long has it been in existence, was this not the same BOC (British Oxygen Company) or have the left. why don’t the so called “wealthy” Zambians form consortium and run these companies, maybe we are too scared to be entrepreneurs we are too comfortable with being employees if not employees then we are tamangas (so called business men) when are we going to make our make as serious corporate builders not only on the national level but the global level as well. I hear Nigerians have opened a bank in Zambia…..come on!!!
