Provide evidence of corruption, members of the public challenged

Share

Zambia Sugar Plc has challenged the general public to come forward and provide evidence of corrupt practices at the company.

Zambia Sugar Plc corporate affairs manager Lovemore Sievu said corruption is counterproductive and  any member of the public with evidence of corruption should
be free to provide such information to the company.

He said this in an Interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today.

This was in reaction  to public complaints of tribalism and corruption in employing
workers at Zambia Sugar Plc.

Mr. Sievu explained  that the company cannot employ everyone who applies for a job
adding that management ensures fairness and merit when employing people.

Mr. Sievu said the company gives first priority to workers from the previous season
when employing  because Zambia Sugar Plc employees work on a seasonal basis.

He added that the company does not encourage casualisation of labour.

On 30th March, 2007, there were complaints of corruption from some members of the
public in the employment of workers at Zambia Sugar PLC.

  1. People complaining about tribalism in employment at Zambia Sugar Plc, should also consider other areas within Zambia, particulary Lumwana Mine. At this mine, there is preference for the local people ahead of everybody else as priority for benefication of the mine investment should be for the local community!
Anyway, what I worry about is the challenge put out by many companies that those with evidence of corruption should come forward. This utterly nonsense because companies who pay employees see how wealthy their poorly employees get overnight. It is unfair to challenge the general populacy to come forward with corruption related issues when there are so many poorly remunerated individuals the width of the country who live far beyond what their life earnings to date can amount to! Why not setup a system where every person in this country has their asserts monitored so when one’s wealthy starts increasing exponentially, such a one be required to account for the increase?

  2. If I may ask, who is charged with the receipt of these same complaints? How transparent is the system employed to handle this? What gadgets are in place to protect those with information? An independent commission must be appointed by Zam Sugar not to be headed by Sievu or anyother ZAM sugar staff , if it has to credible. There is no smoke without fire , when people speak it must not be misconstrued to breed enemity but must be appreciated as self check against bad corporate governance and practices.
