508 staff retired from UNZA and CBU between 2001 – 2006

Share

Parliament today heard that a total of 508 lecturers and support staff retired from the University of Zambia (UNZA) and the Copperbelt University (CBU) between 2001 and December 2006.

Deputy of Education minister Lucy Changwe disclosed that 416 officers retired from UNZA while 92 support staff retired from the CBU.

This brings to  508, the total number of employees who retired from the country’s
highest learning institution over the period under review.

Ms. Changwe said out of all the retirees, only 66 from both institutions have since
received their terminal benefits.

She was responding to Chilubi member of parliament (PF) Obius Chisala, who wanted to
know the number of lecturers and support staff retired from the two universities
between January 2001 and December 2006 and how many had been paid their benefits.

The deputy minister said the 442 retirees were still waiting to receive their
retirement packages.

Ms Changwe said out of the 442 retirees, 391 were former UNZA employees while 51
were from the CBU.

Kantanshi member Mukanga Yamfwa (PF) asked what measures government had instituted
to ensure the retirees that had not yet received their benefits did not turn into
destitutes.

In response, education minister Geoffrey Lungwangwa said the workers were still on
monthly salaries until they received their benefits.

Professor Lungwangwa added that there was K38 billion allocated in this year’s
budget for the payment of retirement benefits at the two universities.

Meanwhile, Ms. Changwe told parliament that 420 basic and secondary school teachers
retired in Northern Province between December 2000 and December 2006.

She said the retired teachers were to be paid their retirement benefits by the
pension’s board while her ministry was responsible for repatriation for the
teachers.

Ms Changwe said this in response to a question from Chilubi Mp Obius Chisala Mr. Who
wanted to find out why the 420 retired teachers were not receiving their monthly
dues for over 15 months as at January 2007.

And Ms. Changwe said government has started realising the objectives of establishing
community school dotted around the country.

She said this in response to a question raised by Mpika Central PF Mp, Mwansa Kapeya
who wanted to know the purpose of introducing community schools in the country and
whether the idea has worked according to expectations.

  1. Ba Joze, Ba Kuku, Ba Easy, The Papparazi -UNZA and CBU are your former schools what do you say on this one.
I hope Ba Easy is not still at UNZA trying complete studies…
I think this a ver delicate issue. The government needs to improve the students living conditions both at UNZA and CBU.

  2. Retirees deserves to be paid their dues on time. These guys had deductions from their monthly pay for pension. The circus goes on. The dribbler did the worst to this country. Look at UBZ and Zambia Airways workers. At 1 time the dribbler did the worst under IMF: voluntery separation (VS). What happened to all those who underwent VS? They have been recalled esp under MOH. All this is FTJ’s legacy. FTJ, please pay back the money maybe we can pay.

  3. This is not a big issues mwaice Cyber-USA, though it portlays like there is a vacuum in the system te? 5. In as much as people talk of job security in Government, they also forget that pension is a serious nightmare in our country. The government should quickly retrieve the money from FJT and pay these deserving former government employee. Vera Chiluba was at one time quoted as saying she could prove to the nation that chiluba has more US$2 billion. I dont know much about law but can someone educate me if Vera cannot be called as a state witness. Kuku mwaice, what is your analysis on this point?

  6. Welcome back our lost leader Robin woods Ba Joze. #1 Cyber war I out of school long dont compare me with those throwing stones bastards. Chapi you see now where part of K1,9 Trillion kwacha went. In the pockets of those who are sitting on the money. If was the president I will just do what that woman in Liberia deed, seal BOZ and MOF fire all and ask pipo to apply for new jobs. How can so much money be not be paid to the deserving persons. PLM has a heavy load to carry no wonder he got sick. The money must be strong. What about the other money idoling in govt coffers. If this Mr. Lungwangwa is not careful he will go without pay one. How can you retire people and put them on govt wages these are ghost workers. So in Zambia you get can get doubt wages-pension and a salary

  7. Mwaba Mwaice #5 this the blueprint for our leader come 2011:
-Well for sure, they must have a strong vision that must solve the need people have,
people are motivated by solving their needs or moving away from what will harm them(poverty eradiction, good health facilities ,access to good education) The true purpose of leadership is to create an improvement in the lives
of those you accept responsibility for –their success and happiness
-Must connect with the peoples values and beliefs, releasing energy from within them
-One’s integrity must be trusted – if we are going to take risks to change
something – we need to know you are what you say you are!
-One who must sense the momentum – everybody want to be part of something
exceptional, if you have energy, passion and action to sustain the effort,
you will draw the right people to you
    -good attitude and belief
-The true leader understands the true purpose of their endeavour. What ever you do professionally, view it the same as you do to your family. You are more forgiving of the little errors your family make, you are more patient when they struggle, you support them more, you build better relationships with them – in short you invest far more of
yourself in their success and happiness. You see in placing the improvement of others before your own needs, in doing so you in fact meet your own needs too.
Finally ,We need a Zambia that combines collective security with individual opportunity. A Zambia that achieves these things through social responsibility, not state control. And a Zambia where a strong society gives everyone the chance to shape their own life, making the most of all that this amazing country, in this amazing century, has to offer.
The top-down days with abnormal bureaucracy are over, Our collective security is not just about the economy, or crime, or separateness,It is also about the fabric of our society. A cohesive society, where Zambians means inspiring people with a love of country, not bullying them with instructions to integrate, or insulting them with cheap ‘flags-on-the-lawn’ gimmicks.Let us show that we are in the 21st Century
According to RUFQUA page 16,288 “When you focus totally, demonstrate passion and remain resilient to the idea of improving things by solving problems for your citizens, your
team, your management, your stakeholders, your community etc you step
into a true leadership mindset. You start to bring that vision of yours
    into focus”.

    Remember the old saying….

    Success leaves clues

  8. #5 Mwaba Mwaice so lyonse elo ulenwa pa Temple, uleibuskisha ati ‘Ba Kuku mukwai’balinjebele ama parameeters for a kateka who will sort out all these UNZA problems, retirees, opharns, widows, cleanliness of our country, revamped health and education systems, revatilise the manufacturing sector, reduce imports and strengthen regualtory bodies such as Zambia Bureau of standards, the general medical council, the Drugs and pharmaceutical boards etc,Mwaba mwaice once all these addressed there will be no need for you to stay in dublin and continue to suffer those discrimination and racial tendencies you experience pa Temple.

  9. Mwaice,Magandelism is fake, one day I tuned in to sky.com/news 2 weeks ago and BBC were interviewing concerning the slave wages and conditions Chambishi people were subjected to and then the strings attached to the chinese investments, did you know what he said with his fat tummy overflowing? He said that if there are any strings attached to this FDI then there are silver otherwise he has no idea that there are strings. How dare some says that, who tells him a shangai Joe can put his money for free? Wait and see, when Chambishi will be left with craters and back fill policies when the copper is finished.

  10. Your analysis of issues is really inspiring except when you bring in the RUFQUA!!! Its distorting all the respect that people would want to give you.
Keep it up youngman as you are slowly getting into what i never thought you would be. I will come back to Zambia when you get into the government….not former housemaids in government mudala!!!!!

  11. # 12 Mwaba Mwaice RUFQUA can not stop you from reading, and its not about respect its about facts atleast whether you liked it or not you read the quote from RUFQUA, RUFQUA seperates men from boys, women from girls, teenagers from adults, old from the young, religious from anti christ, dull from intelligent, innocent from the guilty, paparrazis from genuine reporters, investors from infestors, chuchu from FTJ,the blessed from the cursed, mwaice li book lya maka.Wilaponta pali RUFQUA ya mwela, nomba naya ku gym mwaice Mwaba, pantu kuti naba obese ingaba chuchu

  12. #11 That is why I wanted you to comment I heard this interview on BBC actually he said if strings are there they are nolyon he cant see them. Anyway the fact is that Magande is a destitute pipo at the village they already asked him where he was for the past 15 years. Tell Ba Joze to stop attacking me we should join hands to educate Zedians and so that when 2011 come they vote wisely. I just hope PLM did something when he visited Chambeshi.

  13. #15 thanks Mwaice it was nylon, kabili walishiba fye our country has been polluted with amnesia by chuchu.Nomba mwaice naya pa Training we shall link up mailo.Take charge

  14. Kuku wabomba mwaice pakulondola Ba Joze. Ba Joze, tell us where you had gone. Limbi ka Cafe ka internet mwalebomfya balisele pantu tabalelipita ama bills nomba nabesula after clearing the bills. Bwelenipo ba Joze wesu. Nomba mwamona uyu chuchu musapota, 444 retirees have not been paid their mwabombeni, nomba how does this motivate those who are still serving. They know for sure it will take years before they get their mwabombeni, and most of them ninshi baliya mukutusha (RIP).

  15. zedianz must forget about mwabombeni and learn to prepare for their life after death. or life after retirement. we do not have a system that has been designed to appreciate veterans. thats why even up to now kaunda has been reduced to a layman. we should learn to respect our state heroes and intelligencia then we shall move ahead!!

  16. Well come back Ba Joze as well as Kuku. I missed both of you last weekend. Ba Joze, we thought you were a by gone. But from the writing we can tell that you the actual one te still breathing the uncontaminated air around Inters.

The issue of not paying retirees their dues on time is shameful and uncalled for. We have lost many capable people due to depression because of such tendencies others have completely gone mad. It is not easy to adjust from a life where one is assured a salary at the month end to a life where one starts depending on safety nets. What kind of a society are we that can not respect social economic responsibilities? We are busy investing money into increasing the gratuities for the MPs who within a week after their tenure of office, their money is made available. Why can’t we come up with a similar system for our retirees?

This issue of delay in paying off the retirees has brought about corruption of its worst kind in Zambia. In particular, many of those that are found with cases to answer in relation to abuse of office, money laundering and other fraudulent activities are those that come to realize that time is not there for them to prepare for their future. As a result, they engage themselves in these corrupt tendencies. Just look around and see the age group that is found wanting with corrupt practices. It is mainly those that are about to retire. One notable example is VJ who wanted to take an advantage of an assignment to DRC. But the deal failed him as it were.

  17. CHINA AND INDIA ‘BOOSTING AFRICA’

China and India’s growing trade and investment in Africa holds great potential for African economic growth, a World Bank report has said. The study found that, led by China and India, Asia now gets 27% of Africa’s exports, triple the amount in 1990. At the same time, Asian exports to Africa are now growing 18% per year, faster than any other global region. The study says China, India and African nations must improve their trade reforms to help boost this trend.
    ‘Best interests’
Entitled Africa’s Silk Road: China and India’s New Economic Front, the report recommends the elimination of China’s and India’s tariffs on African exports. Written by World Bank Africa Region Economic Advisor Harry Broadman, the study further calls for Africa to reform its economies to better “unleash competitive market forces, strengthen its basic market institutions, and improve governance”. It also wants to see African countries improve their infrastructure and customs arrangements. Taken together it said such changes were “not only in the best interests of Africa’s economic development, but in China’s and India’s own economic fortunes”.

  18. #3 and #4 Ba Joze, You don`t come on the blog like that without informing other bloggers where you were. Everyone was worried and concerned about your disappearance. At least Kuku informed us that he was busy trying to ensure that there is sanity on the dinning table. Are you worried about your retirement? Don`t worry, we are in the process of forming a sustainable social safety net that will be supported by colleagues in diaspora and local enterpreneurs like Kuku, M. Daka etc. to ensure that you are perpectually cartered for in your old age.

  19. Kuku, I remeber you talking about wireless connection to the inter net in Zamba.Could you please give me more detail on this one such as the cost per month, areas where the wireless card system is available, which agent is offering this facility etc. Please I need this information urgently because I am only remaining with a month before I come back to Zambia.

  20. MAJ CHIZHYUKA CALLS FOR LAW TO BAR MPS SUPPORTING CORRUPTION

NAMWALA UPND member of parliament Major Robbie Chizhyuka has called for a law to block parliamentarians that support perpetrators of corruption from getting back to the National Assembly.

“So to have a lawmaker, my fellow colleagues, support this glaring theft is to be acrimoniously dysfunctional,” he said, “because this means that something has gone wrong with the ability to reason. I believe very strongly that corruption is corruption and we must not condone it even if it is coming from a head of state who is our tribesman.” He urged Zambians to categorically condemn all those that were trying to frustrate the people’s anti-corruption crusade.

“We must push for an onslaught on all those that are condoning corruption,” Maj Chizhyuka said. “People must come out and condemn those that are trying to condone corruption and if an MP is clearly seen to be condoning corruption and in fact defending the perpetrators of corruption, we should start thinking of what we should do to stop that person from getting back into Parliament.”

  21. PUPIL WANTS TO MARRY COUSIN

A Grade 10 pupil at Kabulonga Girls High School in Lusaka yesterday said she will marry her first cousin upon finishing secondary education. In an interview, Zamiwe Kangwa of Mtendere compound said she loved her cousin whom she only named as Mwanza. She disclosed that she even has a one-year-old son with Mwanza by the name of Lovemore. Zamiwe said there was nothing wrong with close relatives marrying each other. “I love him so much and we have a child together. When I complete school, we are going to get married,” Zamiwe said. “It is not wrong for close relatives to marry each other. It is right.” She explained that her mother was a sister to Mwanza’s late father. Zamiwe said Mwanza rents a house in Lusaka’s Kanyama Compound. But Zamiwe’s aunt, Anna Phiri, said there was nothing she could do to stop the two from pursuing their love affair. She said she has tried to persuade them to stop their affair but that her advice fell on deaf ears. “There is nothing I can do. We have tried to stop the two from marrying but they can’t heed our advice. That boy (Zamiwe’s cousin) is a person we have brought up, and talking about the two getting married is simply unacceptable,” Phiri said. Meanwhile, police spokesperson Bonnie Kapeso yesterday said police would extend investigations to Ngambo Kamawe if it was established that she initiated the love affair with her uncle Kalikonga Singongo. Kapeso said police would continue to detain 25-year-old Singogo at an unknown place in order to help with the investigations on his alleged love affair with his 25-year-old niece, Ngambo. “Where Singogo is detained is a matter of security. He’s in police custody. We have started preliminary investigations. The official charge will be given after the investigations. Right now I can only confirm the matter about the man,” Kapeso said. “Investigations will be extended to the woman (Ngambo) if the person who first asked for the affair is the woman. In the investigations we have instituted, if it does appear that we extend to the woman, we shall do so.” But sources disclosed that Singogo was currently detained at Lusaka Central Police. Police on Monday night detained Singogo for allegedly insisting on marrying his niece Ngambo, who has since been relocated out of the country in order to stop the intended marriage. But on Monday, Singogo claimed that it was not his intention to marry Ngambo. He claimed that he had earlier said that he wanted to marry his niece because he quarreled with his mother. However, Singogo last week vowed to marry Ngambo with or without the family’s approval.
