Go to fullsize imageThe controversial speech presented by opposition Patriotic Front (PF) leader Michael Sata at the United States of America (USA) Harvard University a fortnight ago is selling like hot cakes in the mining town of Mufulira.

Residents mostly miners are paying dearly and queuing to have a copy of the speech dubbed” Chinese Investment in Africa and Implications for International Relations, Consolidation of Democracy and Respect for Human Rights, the case of Zambia”.

The 11 paged speech presented on October 24th 2007 by the PF leader is selling at as
much as K 16,000 per copy and residents especially miners are besieging internet
shops where they are downloading the dossier.

A check by ZANIS at a popular internet cafe found miners making copies of the
document which has been the centre of discussion amongst civil society, political
groupings and political leaders in recent weeks.

My fellow countrymen, that speach is not only a hotcake on the copperbelt but across the continent especially Namibia, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, TZ, RSA varsities, while in Malawi 20 pipo were arrested and charged as being in position of illegal documa as regard to the speech. Shame Wamutalika ! Shemuna!!

  3. “Sata’s lies about ‘missing’ passport established”

Lying with intent to alter and or obtain a second Government Document is ground for perjury a serious criminal offense under the penal code of the laws of Zambia.

In event of proof that sata lied, this must be exploited to the maximum until he learns that the law is there for all to respect. An appropriate and specific penalty must be melt by a properly chosen judge.

  4. This is very strange. Where is the post? They usually publish speaches in full. Now this one they dont want, why. Post can you publish the speach so people stop being swindled of money!By can some tell us the web site where the sata’s speach is.
Sata’s speach is bring a lot things to light. Lumwana workers called, baboons, copper stolen etc. Honestly handing over our economy back to foreigners, in anyway is not a solution.

  5. I have the document but I can’t post the website here coz u r not allowed to post websites. Give me ur e-mail and I will forward u the complete document.

    Viva Sata, Viva Zambia

  6. please google “zambia fallen prey to unscupulous chinese investors Sata” and read the speach as qouted by Maravi News. If this it true well what are the answers Mr president?
How can a chinese person who does the same job as a zambian national get more money well??? Please can this be addressed ASAP
The Lord Jesus bless you all and save our country.

  7. Fact don’t just attack Hon SATA without thinking.Passport issue leave it to relevant althority, can you please coment on calling our citizens baboons and stealing our copper by the infestors your family tree are bringing into zed. Shame on your and your family tree Chuchu, mpombo, shikapwasha, shakafuswa and the unprincipled money rupiya banda.Long live PF,Long Live HON SATA – Viva pachibwato

  8. I agree with Sata. Africa and Zambia need to engage China and indeed all foreign powers more intelligently.Leaders should stop conducting themselves like party cadres for China and other foreign powers. We are complaining about bad mine deals today because of dim wit/poverty.The slave traders and colonisers did not dehumanise Africa singlehandedly. Some Africans sold their kith and kin into slavery for a tot of rum, beads or cloth. Africa open you eyes and do not repeat the cycle of enslavement.

  9. Over time man’s values change. Dont take for granted the world order of today. The ever increasing competition for resources;will certainly change WO in a 100 years. Conquest may become acceptable. The middle east is under siege by US for its oil. Conquest takes many forms. Amercian indians and aborigines were outnumbered by means of migration. Debt/Financial domination would be another form.Africans who sold their relatives for a tot of rum 200 years ago thought they were being clever.BE CAREFUL

  12. His Excellence Hon Sata Speach:

    1.0 Introduction
Recent involvement of the People’s Republic of China in the exploitation of Africa’s natural resources has attracted worldwide attention and concern, especially to people within and outside the African continent interested in the social and economic advancement of the poorest continent on earth. The concern, debates and speculation are not without foundation, because with a population of 1.3 billion, China is the most populous nation in the wo

  13. China is the most populous nation in the world. It is also the largest country in the world in terms of physical size. The enormous human resource and physical size, cannot, however, generate adequate capital for quality investments at home and abroad. It is, therefore, not surprising that China has found it difficult to generate adequate capital since the end of its 1947-49 Civil War.

China’s recent march into Africa is by and large a search for natural resources, and especially oil, timber

  14. and base metals to guarantee survival for its people. This is critical to coerced internal stability and unity, as well as to ensuring that China remains a global power. As an investor in Africa, China is said to be the continent’s third largest investor, after the United States and France. This newly found economic power has enhanced China’s influence on the continent, and has a bearing on the conduct of international relations, especially in the 46 African countries that have diplomatic ties w

  15. The increased clout of the People’s Republic of China in Africa has a bearing on consolidation of democracy and a culture of respect for human rights, because China does not subscribe to democracy and is inconsistent in upholding human rights at home. China also tends to ignore human rights abuses in developing countries in general, and in countries with which it has closer diplomatic ties in particular. The excuse for ignoring human rights abuses in other countries is China’s policy of “non int

  16. China’s policy of “non interference” in the internal affairs of other countries, which basically amounts to appeasement of individual leaders of the countries concerned.

Those who want to watch the script of His Excellence Sata should visit the site: network africa and type in box sata*china. It’s one hour script and I guess you will enjoy questioning part were he shined and outwitted some African presdoz like Chuchu, Mu7, Wamutalika.

  17. Hon Sata has been a lone voice in this call. It’s a pity that we seem to be fantacising alot and not acting as Zambians. Lets get out of the back seat and take a considerable lead together. We do not need Chinese HUMAN capital in this country. They need to be chased before it becomes too late. We need to start acting and act now and very fast. To hell with Chuchu, and his lack of direction and foresite.

  18. Lets face it, China needs raw materials to enable them maintain there development momentum. That is the reason why they have no regard for there workers welfare. What do we gain from Chinese investment in Zambia. Low wages, Poor Working conditions, then why keep them. Lets get out of the confort zone and take charge of running this economy. Chuchu and his government has no direction and will to save his people.

  23. Satas impis are having a field day hoping that this might stop their leader from hiting the political grave.Sata is too late in the game and what he talking about is just his understanding of a big picture. You can not talk about globe economy by singling one player.China is just filling the gap which if they pull the plug someone will take advantage.Africa is left with a quesition of deciding which one is a better vimpire in this vicious globe economy.

  24. If sata really feels he can counter china he should attack the policies of some of these industrialised nations. This has been as a result of IMF and world bank failed policies in africa. The west have been so adamant on the reap off loan that they gave to africa and China seems to be the only player that is considerate of the under-dogs in this porker game.He can pander to tem and probably they are just going to entaintaned but they wont be shaken because they know how china is busting them.

  25. The best Sata can do is to pressure his local gov not let them be taken advantage.Levy and his fellow african leaders must remain united. This is the all reason why Eu/afirca meeting in Portugal is crucial for africa and the west.If africa get divided then they will lose another orppotunity to get their money worth. This the little picture that sata should tackle.China is not an angel, the west worse.Sata must advocate for africa to speak with one voice.

  26. Spineless PF trolls,
Devise a survival strategy for an era without your hired Gun Chief. He is heading for a complex internal party strife from progressives. Least you timely understand that no serious political constituency domestic or foreign other than Taiwan would endorse your boss’s chauvinistic hogwash, the demise of UNIP would even be considered as dignifying. Sata’s circus politics of fortune and aimlessly hallucinations has a zero return or aggregate.

  27. All Strategyless Trolls,

Traditionally Zambians detest with contempt political masqueraders where evidence is found that top leaders are foreign Governments’ Hired Guns. Zambians are very expressive and unforgiving on such. Look at the November 8th Nchanga bye-elections from where alienation for PF will be vividly through transfer of a wide margin mandate to MMD. PF will lose with a big irreconcilable margin. From there, watch the internal political pace and strife in PF.

  28. This momentum will be unstoppable way through Decision 2011 from where Zambians will patriotically renew the MMD rule giving the ruling party a run away house representation at Manda hill. Watch the space, on November 8th the free people of Nchanga in a spirit of solidarity will be consolidating democracy rejecting a mercenarines’ Party.

  29. 37-40, Fact, your debate is very interesting. It would appear like you are fixed to supporting something regardless. But I am sure it clear to every one that foiregners interest in our economy is to get as much resources for their own good and not that of Zambians. And this is what we should fight, regardless of whether our relative is in cabinet or not. The developed world guard their resources jelously. politics aside, defend your finite resources.

  30. Mwewa 22 & Buffalo 36 have valid points. But we have to put Zambia & Africa first. Politics aside. As much as MMD can accusse Sata of being a hired so are they a hired gun for China. So lets put politics aside & strive to secure Zambia & Africa’s future. Black Africa has been the most dehumanised race in the history of mankind. We should NOT allow that to happen again. The decisions & partnerships we make today will have far reaching consequences on future generations. PF/MMD wont matter then.

  31. #40 we chipuba niwebo, uli chibushi mabwe, the family tree has really confused you chap, just wait the ichibwato is coming and you will be drowned mwaiche

  32. Ba Joze, thanks mwabomba bakalamba. The speech is interesting because in french we say “TROP C’EST TROP”

  33. The concept of creating economic zones in zambia, to me is very suspisisou also. I hope it is not creating a zone where certain class of people will be doing business/reside, which may end up a province-like of some foreign country-may be china. We already have blocks in zambia; farm blocks, indusrial areas, residential areas, commercial areas, mining areas etc. Any genuine investor should fit in any, and not demand special place. stop this please.STOP.

  34. I read that document last week, well written piece but flawed with rhetoric…For example, “Lack of access to finance is … the main constraint to the participation of Zambians in the economy of their country”. Is that a chinese problem?

Sata’s beef should be directed towards the Zambian government and the Zambian financial sector who are not giving us loans to start businesses which can favourably compete with the Chinese! They have seen an opportunity and they are taking advantage of it.

  35. FACT, let Sata get his facts right from you:

Sata says china is the largest country in the world, I thought Russia was.

Unemployment rate in Zambia is not 70% if you use internationally accepted [ILO] definitions. Latest CSO Labour Force Report puts it at 16%.

  36. Sata also says that “China never got involved in any significant efforts aimed at reviving the Zambian economy after the construction of the Tanzania-Zambia railway”

China is still, like us,a developing country. They are in a hurry to develop, they cannot be expected to direct all their energies to reviving our economy when they should be doing that for their economy

  37. Prof. Sata is too advanced for his and our generation.
Very few people are percieving what he is talking about. The reason is that most of us Zambians if not Africans, nifwe ba musekelela kali mwitobo.

  38. Sata’s write-up should have also looked at the flip side: how Zambia could take advantage of the huge Chinese market. Under the Chinese initiative, Zambia could export to China at preferential tariff rates.

  39. He could have also tackled the issue of how Zambia should ensure that the labour regulations are enforced to make sure that our workers are not abused. It is not only Chinese employers abusing their workers. But for Sata that is not an issue.

  40. Shebo #49 #50 you start by asking for loans and end with reducing unemployment rate. What is your contribution on the blog?We dont want day dreamers here.

  41. Fellow Zambians, xenophobia is not going to help us. The fundamental question we need to ask ourselves is: Why are they in Zambia in hordes? They have seen big business opportunities, which we do not seem to be taking advantage of. Let the Government and local banks like ZANACO finance our projects, so that we can have economic independence. It is so easy for a Chinese dude to walk into Bank of China and get a loan, while a Zambian cannot even dream of going to the ZANACO for a loan.

  42. Wanyanya #55: I am merely correcting the statistics in the report, and giving my opinion to the statement about Zambians not having access to finance . Have you read it?

  43. 57,Shebo

Prez Mwanawasa was quoted during a speech recently were he said he had reduced unemployment from 87% to 75%. So are you saying the president, with all the information and advisors he has before him all got it wrong? Let us not try to be academic with unemployment stats in Zambia, we all know there are very few people in formal employment that is why those that have jobs get taxed highly.

  44. Outlook#59. You are looking at FORMAL employment, the 16% I mentioned is simply unemployment, whether formal or informal

Am sorry to tell you the truth that you must be an ***** to consider makeshift kiosks as a contributing factor to your 16% unemployment rate and soon you will start making an allowance for backyard garden/ amabala as employment. Weshiluwe, pipo are struggling to make ends meet and if they do so you and Dr Chuchu just rush to drawing board to adjust stats figures to claim that you have scored te?. Which scoring when your 8.8% inflation rate doesn’t tally with unemployment rate? Now, te

  49. #65 cont…
Now, tell me how you would explain these inflation rates in the region in comparison to Zed living standards? :
    Botswana 5.4%
    Namibia 9.2%
    Angola10.3%
    RSA 7.5%
    Zim 2673%
    Malawi 23%
    Lesotho 19%
Anyway, that gives you food for thought with your MMD stats propaganda.

  50. Iwe Joze what is wrong if I dont comment you miss me. I did my Thesis some good ten years ago. I find it louse to discuss issues which dont materialise that is why I dont comment anymore. Anyway on Sata I understand his concern about the Chinese but he not write to go USA to tell them about these problems. He should tell the pipo of Zambia Ku Lusenge, Napundwe, Magoye, Kambilombilo not going to Harvad what will this bring? If you want to chnage this do it within Zambian borders. Ask Gen Tembo?

  51. #66 Ba Joze, you raise the issue of inflation and living standards. I am no economist, so I don’t know of any such studies done in Zambia. I however know of a US study that showed that the gain from reducing annual inflation rate from 10% to zero is equivalent to an increase in real income of slightly less than one percent! That’s very minimal. Happy? …I wont comment on the other SADC countries as I hardly know about their economies.

  52. Shebo you seem to miss alot of points. China is accessing our market, we are not accessing the chinese market. We are supposed to sell our copper direct to china and not having these fong kongs mine it in Zambia , buy it locally or even steal it then they sell to China. The local Zambians need to be doing all that.We need a Zambian owned metal market to buy all our copper then sell it to China even Taiwan. For your information ZANACO is not a local bank any more

  53. Only narrow minded pipo embrace SATAnic PF.If he chases the chinese he will bring the taiwanese, whats the difference? This man can stoop so low to embarass his country for peanuts he gets from Taiwan. This man promised his funder he was going tp president now its pay back time, he has to prove his worth the salt they gave me.

Fellow zambians time petty politics is far gone … forward with zambia and stone throwers behind.

  54. # Sata’s politics reminds me of Idi Amin.
Amin staged a coup on populist euphoria, he blamed the economic misery of the poeple on the Asians. He stirred up so much xenophobia that people rejoiced at the departure of the Indians only to submerge into more poverty when the economy collapsed.Hitler also did the same with Germans by blaming the Jews for their economic hardships. Sata is today doing the same poor Zambians by making them believe that their problems are because of the Chinese.

  55. Some of these cheap thinkers.Who has bewitched you guys?Idi Amin died in saudi Arabia and where is saudi arabia. Is it in africa or asia?Which asians did he chase from Uganda? You are filled up with wrong interpretation, and dont understand anything about Africa.Study these things properly and then write because you are embarrasing us with your illusions.

  56. Interesting debate. We are fighting ourselves. The fight is between PF and MMD/Liberals not China and Taiwan. What is the point in chasing the Chinese and bring in the people of Taiwan. Are they not the same people? There is no point in fighting the same people. As for west, they are the worst. They are source of all these in fighting.

  57. Shebo my dear Bravo! you have analysed Dr Mulengas article alas M SATA presentation very well. All the PF Cadres here are dissapointed and not giving reasons and not even analysing the so called SATAs presentation. They dont realise that a reduction in inflation also means reduction in interest rates…which means one can borrow more easily, they dont especially Ba Joze

  58. These chaps think we as a country have the means to invest heavily in mining ventures, let them tell us who will invest and how we should attract investors and not just waffle about china. For sure inhuman conditions are unacceptable similarily we dont agree with the 0.06% royalties however, we sale our copper to china and thats how the price has gone up. So we need to be sure of what we are doing. If china today refused to buy our copper, we would be dummed………..Ba Joze tell us

  59. That speech was not written by Sata but by China Haters Coz Sata lacks the intellectual capacity to see things that way.China z not to blame but yo Govt 4 not putting stringent measures to stop the rot.China z in business here so z everybody be it Taiwan or 4rm the west.
    Plain Fools

  60. #80 Ndife
You have raised two issues, one based trading with China and improving welfare a common Zed man. Trading with chine is NOT bad but Chine spilling loafers into Zed is absurd and no sovereign state can accept that apart from Dr Chuchu. Watch the space, Chinese population is increasing steadily and by 2011 it will reach 5 million as legible voters. On the other issue of lower inflation contemporaries lower bank interest rate, that would have seen Zed living stds getting closer to RSA if

  61. #83 cont…
…closer to RSA if you compare inflation rate I gave you. Then what does that mean? The nation conveyor belt is porous somewhere making the rich to widen the gap and MMD govt lacks plans to empower the common man to benefit from the nation cake. Ndefi wake up before you discover that your new neighbours are making a braai of dog’s meat.

  67. Ba Jose is agitated, understandably so. But we need to look at the macroeconmic aggregates linkages, not just one in particular. If you analyse our poverty figures and look at the Gini coefficient of over 0.5, it is quite high, meaning, income is unevenly distributed. Though the aggregates may be favourable (higher GDP/GNI per capita, lower inflation, etc.), our skewed income distribution means the majority of Zambians will still have relatively low incomes, because wealth is in the hands of a few

  68. #76 Wanyanya
You must be a toddler who does not understand history.
Go and borrow a civics / history exercise book from your friend or ask an educated uncle to shed more light.
For your information.Idi Ami took over power in a coup surpportedby Britain from Milton Obote who was then attending a commonwealth conference. He gave Indian in Uganda 90 days to leave Uganda. He was removed by rebels supported by the Tanzanian Defence Force. He fled to Saudi Arabia where he died.

  69. #76 Wanyanya
Idi Amin was the first to be using the term 90 days to do things. He promised to Change Uganda within 90 days of getting to power.

  70. #89 what else can i say you are just another stupid ***** very useless. Am from the loyal family so what? if you are Movement for Mandrax Dealers, don’t bring ilenda to my contributions.Do you understand you foolish chap, mwaiche ine nipachibwato

You must go and redo social studies. Amin was removed by Zambia and Tanzania Defence Forces who late reinstated Milton Obote.Which rebels are you talking about? If you watched the movie “last king of scotland” you will agree with me that the actor(Forest)looks exactly like Dr Chuchu.

  72. What is all this fuss about China?
Contrary to conventional but typically superficial wisdom, China’s inter¬ests in Africa go well beyond the continent’s wealth of resources and include important political and diplomatic aspects. China’s current engagement in Africa is rooted in more than 50 years of friendly, respectful, and supportive relations between China and African countries. Beijing was quick to assist the emergent nations of postcolonial Africa even at a time when China was itself isol

  73. isolated, poor, and beset with internal upheavals. This history continues to play a powerful role and supports Beijing’s diplomatic strategy in Africa, which positions China as a different and more-understanding partner than Western nations, whose history on the continent is far more checkered

  74. #93 Citizen
You must go and redo social studies. One may wonder why they went far looking for that actor leaving Chuchu nearby.

  75. #93 Citizen are you in the late stone age?Did you read properly what wanyanya wrote. If you call wanyanya a toddler then you a foetus. If something bad happens in a certain one african state or lets put a coup, you dont say a coup has been staged by africans,do you?so saying Idi Amin chased Asians is wrong you get the point you jank!

  76. Hi GLUCO, Nice to note that you are still around. I too dont understand why China and Taiwan has become an issue in Zambia instead of tackling poverty, disease, hunger and other issue that affect our lives daily, we are wasting energy talk about ping peng. What a west of time meanwhile the west in mining our minerals and taking them away. Ba Joze about the inflation you listed about. Botswana and South Africa are babies of the west because they supply them with wein, beef and Gold. As for Zambia

  77. copper, cobalt and steal does not counter in the west though it makes their lives comfortable and safe. So they west will not bite the finger that feeds it. The rest of Africa is just there to be exploited. Look at Angola, Chad, Central Africa Republic, DR Congo, Congo, Liberia, Sudan, Zambia, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Senegal, South Africa, Lesetho, Swaziland, Mozambique, Tanazania, Libya, Morroco, Algeria, Benin, Togo, Mauritus, Madgascar, Guninea, Gambia, West Shahara, Ethoipia, Eriteria, Zim etc

Are you following the debate or you still woke up from deep slaumber and start writing from memory recall? My respond was based on the above article and comment #50 that claim single inflation rate can be used as parameter to measure living stds that’s why I listed regional inflation rates #66 to whether that tallies with Zed situation.Easy mwaice, RSA and Bots govts have good progms of empowering pipo not ifi wayamba ukusata, then what about Libya anti-west?

  79. #67 EASY.In response to your concerns why SATA went to Havard and expressed his views about the Chinese instead of confining his views within Zambia. There`s a scramble for Zambian resources between the USA and China.China has the MMD GOV in their pocket and the USA wants a part of the same pie and they realise that the only current viable opposition party is PF and as such giving SATA an audience. In simple terms it`s CHINA vs USA on ZAMBIAN soil with DEMAGOGUES(rotten leadership) as spectators.

I am sure you dont know that milton obote’s loyalists moved to Tazania and become rebels or freedom fightors supported by Tanzania’s defence forces.Tanzania invaded uganda after it was bombed by the UGANDA airforce. It was called operation “panga kali” or sharp matchet. Zambia provided logistical and operational support but not combatants. The folling people have ruled uganda Prof Yusuf Lule,Milton obote, Idi Amin Dada, Tito okello, Josph Okello and Yoweri Museveni.
