Make defilement non-bailable offence, urges Women’s Lobby

Share

THE Zambia National Women’s Lobby Group (ZNWLG), men’s wing has called on the Government to stiffen the law against defilement and make the offence non-bailable.

ZNWLG men network coordinator, Isaiah Munali, said this in an interview in Lusaka yesterday after a briefing over awareness campaign ahead of the women’s International day, which falls on Saturday.

“It is unfair to defile a little girl and then go with a light sentence. We want the Government to make this offence non-bailable like is the case with theft of a motor vehicle which is,” he said.

Reverend Munali who is Reformed Church of Zambia national youth coordinator said defiling minors was a much more serious offence than that of a motor vehicle theft, a vehicle which was replaceable.
Once a child was defiled, it was hard to restore her or his emotional status.

Rev Munali said perpetrators of such vices should not be entertained by law and asked fellow men to desist from such practices, which were inhuman.

Earlier, he urged men in the men’s network, which was part of the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) to be proactive in championing the plight of children and women.

Rev Munali said the men’s networks should sensitise drivers and their callboys to commit themselves to fight gender based violence because there had been overwhelming evidence pointing at them as perpetrators of the vice.

He also called on leaders from all walks of life to denounce violence at all costs and encourage co-existence between men and women.

He said it was important for those men who were concerned about the suffering of women and girls to speak strongly against violence.

“Violence is a key obstacle to the achievements of women’s personal aspirations and goals of equality and development,” he said.

Rev Munali called on the Government, private sector end the donor community to invest in projects and programmes designed at promoting a violent free society.

And YWCA acting programme coordinator, Mubita Simonda said a violent free society was possible.

  1. Indeed defilers of minors should be given a bail, but should be jailed and IFITENDENI so that he does not do it again to another minor when he out jail.

  2. Whether bail is granted or not defilement will not stop. The problem is that these chaps are sick in the head. Just like homosexuals who are attracted to the same sex, these people are attracted to minors.

  3. It really sadens me when I hear a baby being defiled by her own father! Ladies, plz let us c how we choose our partners, long courtship might giv warning signals of the character we want to father your kids perhaps. The other thing is for all women to consider men dangerous species and never leave the sight of their girl children until old enough to make own choices! whats wrong with us men? Maybe we should hav fast track courts for trying these cases and a category of constables deployed to this task! These *****s makes me feel ashamed to be a man, for animals even wait until the females are on heat, there we are raping infants! Ati kupusa, shaaaaaa!

  4. i’m all for fast track courts AFTER psychological evaluation!!this may sound controversial but…you cannot make it un-bailable.Children often lie and many a person would be incarcerated despite their innocence!!the treatment defilers get in prison is too ghastly to describe on a respectable forum like LT.we need to educate the little ones in schools as well…they need to know that it is alright to “tell” on an uncle/aunt/brother who is acting inappropriately!!

  5. #6 well said! lets condem all forms of sexual abuse by all means, though bearing in mind the other side of the coin, the what if question! and taking the judge rule into acount too( the presuption of ones innocence until proven other wise). police cells/prison are been abused
Both girl/boychild need to be educated on these issues in schools! #5 you are very right my brother its so sad! also women do the same to boychild, they should be purnished the same way! Alot of women do molest boys too! we need to lobby our legislature to include them too and recieve the same penulty as men! If only the little ones are taught then you will see results!Otherwise I 100% support your call bravo gentlemen!

  6. Is there a drug that can remove sexual feelings completely……No Erection…..No Semen….No Sperm…..If at all there is one (please twapapata)then, these crocodiles( So called Defilers) need to be given such a drug…….if at all there is none…..can the scientists do something about such a drug….You see, characters like these(defilers) need to be robbed of sexual feelings for the rest of their lives. Because if they are sent to prison they will be a danger to fellow inmates

  7. no country in the world (i know of)practise chemical castration as a court determined punishment…so we can put that dream to rest!!maybe if the culprits are certified insane by Chainama solitary confinement maybe instigated, this would save their fellow prisoners !!!

  8. Change the law and let Zambia be the first country to hang child molestors.

How can we live in a society that allows men to have sex with babies?

Mr Minister just change the law. If it happens to one of your own you will be the first to kill the man that raped your dughter, niece or granddaughter.

Just listen to the women of Zambia and change the law. cut of the bits that make them have sex with children, this has nothing to do with cultural beliefs.
