Kafue Steel Plant announces measures to regulate pollution

Share

The Kafue Integrated Iron and Steel Plant (KIISP) has assured local residents that there will be no pollution contaminating the environment arising from the operations of the plant.

Project Manager Julius Kaoma says communities in Kafue should not be worried about pollution because the firm has put in place measures to detect and control pollution levels at the plant.

Dr. Kaoma was speaking when Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary Elijah Chisanga toured the plant in Kafue.

He said the plant would be only emitting less than 15 milligrams of effluents which are harmless.

Dr. Kaoma said the water in the Kafue River would be used to cool the machines arising from the gases and carbon-dioxide during the combustion process.

He said the Plant will immensely contribute to national growth and local people will benefit through jobs opportunities.

The plant is expected to be operational by June this year and it will produce 280,000 Metric Tones of Steel to be supplied to the manufacturing industries in the country.

And Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary Elijah Chisanga said government has set a good precedent of conducting manufacturing and fabrication of metal which the private sector should take advantage of.

Mr. Chisanga further advised the Plant Management to abide by the Zambian labour laws.

The Kafue Integrated Iron and Steel Plant was officially launched by President Levy Mwanawasa on November 30 last year.

  1. It is not a question of pollution levels at the plant, it is the pullution of the Kafue River and subsequently the drinking water you Lusaka residence swallow every day. Which is down stream the Kafue Water Works or the Steel Plant ?

    Cheers !!!

  2. Bafikamba mukatwipaya!!!! that thing is just across the road from Naboye Secondary School. u talk about reducing pollutants, what we dont want it you to emmitt those pollutants. its bad enough that we have NCZ!!

  3. have you been to kitwe and seen that small river near micmar at the bamboos it’s fulll of suwarage and industrial discharge, then it goes directly into kafue river, talking about pollution

  4. Of course Kafue residents should be concerned about their health. Who does not want to live long despite the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the country? The Kafue steel plant was built through corruption who does not know even my mother in the village is very much aware. There will be so many accidents due to pollution in Kafue. Amulindile.

  5. #3 be rational in your contribution,do you know the difference btn air pollution and water pollution, the case of kafue is not sewage disposal but air emissions. In Steel production we talk ofproducts of combustion being emmitted like CO2,NO2 and particulate matter. These substances are the major causes of cardiovascular (lack of breath) problems and are highly carcogenicleading to cancer. Here in Europe such plants are located far from dwelling areas and proper mitigation measures to such constructions have been taking. But for the zambian culture,as long as you have cash then you can build anywhere,I plead with Kaue residents please do something that thing is a death cage for you, moreover your

  6. # 1-4, stop dramatising! What evidence do you have for your allegations? # 5 has tangible facts that can be counter-checked by research. It is the only contribution worth reading so far.

  7. I wonder if at all they did an environmental impact assessment before establishing that plant, please its too close to the people.I fail to understand also the role of the Environmental council of zambia, who only repond afyer disastor has striken.May the kafue residents take this issue upon and themselves and kickout the investor before he kills you.

  8. #8 The Enviromental Council of Zambia rejected the project but was overruled by the government with the president championing the whole thing. In other words environmental impact assessment was done and the ECZ observed the project was disastrous to people however due to nchekeleko the project was aprooved from somewhere else.

  9. Come on ECZ, how can you be so dull as to allow a Polluter regulate himself? Only in brainless Zambia as we have no grz.
