YWCA dismisses calls to legalise commercial sex

Share

The Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) has dismissed calls by a gender activist in Eastern province that commercial sex should be legalised.

YWCA Copperbelt Regional Coordinator Jurita Mutale says legalising commercial sex would fuel the spread of HIV/AIDS in the country.

She said in Kitwe today that Zambia as a christian nation cannot legalise prostitution.

Mrs Mutale was reacting to a statement attributed to a gender activist based in Eastern province Ms Emelda Banda who said legalising commercial sex would empower sex workers to negotiate for safer sex and help slow down the spread of HIV.

Mrs Mutale added that it was disheartening to see young girls, some below 16 years, turning to sex work a situation which ngo’s and government were fighting hard to control.

She strongly urged the law enforcement agencies to continue arresting commercial sex workers as it would deter them from actively being involved in the illegal trade.

  1. Come on congrats to YMCA,how can we fight the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted Diseases if spiritually and culturally an immoral behavior gets legalized?
Where are we going? How the hell can one even be courageous to mention about negotiations?
Does the spread of one of the best hematological weapon affect you?In addition, how do you invest all your life in a condom?Who told you it was 100% safe?
Think twice before you display such kinda information.Lets fight AIDS together especially with the best drug ever “Stay away from such kinda activities and stick to one sexual partner. Not condoms. For transmission due to infusion, medical personnel do handle that amicably well.

  2. Shakafusex will be very happy if it legalised.Remember AIDS is real and it taking away very productive group of people but because of high levels of unemployment what do expect.MORE COMMECIAL sex.ABSTIANANCE ILICHE

  3. THE MAN…
You 100% right. But lets not let these dudez make Zambia a second barbilone by legalizing the work of a Devil.

  4. In a conservative country like zambia it wouldnt work to legalise it, but i do feel that if it where regulated effectively, it would slow the spread of STIs (i.e mandatory condom use). I agree with #1, scarlet women are and will always be there regardless. My stance? well, i would like a regulated system..maybe its because im male…^^

  5. Its interesting.Such a move is welcome. If a man knows that he is dealing with a prost they will ensure that they protect themselves during the act.Fore warned is for armed.

  6. Sin is sin Emelda.you have to start it first..let’s see you join prostitution and maybe when shakafusex slaughters you,we shall understand.why shud we let sin be born and bred in daylight.don’t be Jezebel.

  7. If you legalise commercial sex you can regulate it and control it, making it safer for the ladies and also for their customers.

  8. “christian hippocrisy”….prostitution is the oldest profession! legalize and regulate it!!! hippocrisy wont help! it will be a part of our society as long as we live!

  9. We are faced with a big problem, AIDS – mostly spraed by unprotected sex, usually from multiple partners, sometimes sex workers. We can not go on pretending that the cause of this problem is ‘sin’, it is sex which even so-called staunch believers enjoy. lets tackle the problem from the source! Regulate and Control prostitution, the same way game hunting is! So, Mr Religious Faith, unless you have a proven practical solution, please give us a break, too many people have died – including believers.

  10. sex is sex, whether from a prostute or a wife, so let them legalize it so that many start to enjoy it at a fixed price.

  11. If I can be allowed to wonder aloud, if prostitution had to be legalised, would that mean that husbands would not get into trouble with their wives for utilising the legally allowed and taxable service offered by sex workers?? Where would the line be drawn? Legal for the nation but illegal for the household? And while we are at it, I guess male prostitutes would also be allowed to operate legally, right?

  12. Once prostitution is legalized, then the society can tax it, control it, make it safer, and ensure that careers of those involved are safer and more humane. Sweden and Denmark have it legalized and one does not hear of such monstrous crimes against women there but in Zambia where it is all covered up in piety and mumble jumble of hypocricy.

  13. It is due to this cloud of secrecy and hypocrisy that the oldest profession in the world operates illegally. Yes, male prostitutes are there but, where do you find them? Secret times and places.

  14. Some arguments are rubbish ,sorry to say this but i feel that is the only word that befits this case. Legalising sex ! are some people suggesting that zambia should become a secular state. Not even in UK is commercial sex legalised.Turn away from corrupt thinking.

  15. Upright Zambian, probably the only upright thing about you is the item between your legs. Have you only been to the UK and if so, this debate is very hot there too. Yes, I for one would advocate for a secular state and not one where people proclaim religion but live mystic and dishonest lives. Who do you think you are fooling?

  16. You might as well abolish adultery as a civil case.& how is tax going to be collected? Are we going to be given invoices for tax purposes? The whole idea is useless for any African country maybe SA whr they recognise gay mariages.

  17. wanzelu#22, in France bapasa ma receipt !!! as for the “christian nation” malarky…….we are tired of listening to that broken record !!! there is nothing christian ’bout zambia as a nation but i would be proud to say instead that we have a large God fearing & worshipping population….there is a BIG difference between the two !!!!!!!!!!

  18. Nice data YWCA.

#15, yes sex is sex, but sin is sin too and the wages of sin (Romans 6:23, Holy Bible) are still the same – death in actual fact.

Let us behave normally. Even animals like dogs and cattle know what the real purpose for sex is: reproduction for us to increase in number. Sex is honourable in a marriage and once done outside marriage it becomes a danger to human life.

  19. #24..you obviously live in the dark ages. anything done IRRESPONSIBLY is dangerous…no amount of Bible quoting will stop or affect the rate at which people fornicate.Just follow the simple rule of life, irrespective of what your beliefs are, do EVERYTHING RESPONSIBLY and you’ll live to see your grand children grow !!!

  20. Most Shanty compounds are homes to thousands of prostitutes, all longing for a good life but never had proper education to get jobs, around 17:00Hrs daily the ritual of bathing their bleached bodies and get dressed for a night out hunting for men with money begins. Most of these “beauties” have the HIV virus. If prostitution would be legal, dangers of risking to meet Aids carriers would be controlled. Women can be given licenses that proves that they are disease free and tested by doctors every two weeks. I can point out dozens of whores daily who sleeps with someones husbands brothers etc in order to survive, they dont care if its illegal, there’s plenty of fish afterall take it or leave it

  21. 26# You know the reality. All the politicians know the reality but none of them would want to be seen as the prostitute’s friend so it stays the same. Perhaps Mr Shakafuswa will be their friend.

  22. Imagine waiting for a VAT receipt after slaughter behind a mango tree!! Should VAT be charged at 17.5% like any other commodity?

  23. Prostitution has always been and will always be a controversial issue in every society but commercialising it is not the right way forward. Sex is not for sale! It just doesn’t make sense, whatever angle you view it from. The love for money indeed is the root of all evil and the Devil is fixing his grip on Africa after fulfilling his purpose in USA and Europe.

  24. And whilst the “Boma” is in denial of acknowledging the realities of life, hundreds of zambian men & women are offering themselves up for sale on adultsites on the World Wide Web, mostly looking for foreign partners with a lot of dosh therefore making themselves prey to sadistic and perverted cultures, disgusting nude pictures of zedians taken in hotels around the country are all over the net. Christian Nation my foot! Legally, prostitution should be done properly. zambian ho’s are not protected and are being taken advantage of because they have no rights. Since yrs Greeks, indians & “others” in LSK ve’been sodomising teens taken from bars & clubs and are getting away with that scott free

  25. even in israel the “Holy Land” for the christian nation Zambia, prostitution is legal. The currency is NIS aka New Israeli Shekel.

  26. Radioactive #17… Countries like sweden and Denmark have a totally different socio cultural outlook from ours for one to make comparisons. These are people who will from a very young age to the oldest freely share the swimming pool with the entire family and everybody else in skimpy, almost nonexistent bikinis.Pornography as an industry is highly entrenched whether in film, video, live or word form as are nude societies etc. So while prostitution is legal in that sense, it manifests itself in many forms including groupies.Their perception of matters of the sexual genre are formented in openness at all levels, something Zed’s would be hard pressed to do.Theres a discipline to the concept.

  27. #25. “#24..you obviously live in the dark ages.” HHahhahhahha! Isn’t 2008 in this 21st Centuary? Come on Original Pundit, please avoid misplacing phrases of this nature where the surely do not apply!

  28. people please come to holland and visit the red light district,we blaze like dogs,20 euro blow job,30 euro with rubber and 50 euro live and there is no Aids, and after that you visit a coffee shop and blaze some weed, then you are home and dry

  29. lets continue the hippocrisy, afterall its our own peoples’lives that are on the line! who cares if they die out like flies, right?? zedians, when are we gonna get real? why is christianity perceived in a wrong way in zed and africa as a whole!? is it coz of poverty, illitracy maybe? or is it just stupidity? is it that difficult to draw a line between reality and hallucinations that comes with religion??
“massage parlours” japan, thailand, korea, china offer services that includes massage, blow jobs, sex, threesomes(doubtful)–condome use is mendatory in these places…taxing is also made easier!

  30. Its as simple as; if u overindulge in (live) sex, u die. Its up to each of us to play it safe no matter what these morons say.

  31. # 23 The Original pundit, its been long i saw yo posting here. But nkani yama receipt eliko bad can you imagine yo wife finds them in yo slacks wen doing laundry.
However i agree with u about the christian nation thing.Take care bululu

  32. lets face reality weather we like it or not prostitution will always b part of us. Its up to an individual to chose.”’ plse legalise it so that people with marital problems can have solace in prostitutes.

  33. 3 of my posts has been removed, Zambia doesn’t like to hear the truth only when its too late. Prostitutes are not only found in bars, some low paid working class men and women can engage themselves with sex in exchange for a better wage or promotion from the boss that too is prostitution. Some mothers or married women sleep around for money when kids at home has nothing to eat the list is very long

  34. #41 pantu balilowa (they are so freaky),nowing that she will be paid then she has to give it all,so that you call again, its just some art anyway

  35. If you can’t control it then regulate with peaces of legislatures; Its true for pipo to talk about it ,they know it seriuos and happenning! We hear MPs turning their motel into brothels, working classes abusing their offices in exchange of sex&money,Nite clubs it worse! we see young girls venturing into prostitution and now it has even become a trend that when ever you see a woman in a bar you start asking yourself questions whether she’s genuine or otherwise! It takes two to tangle men should as well be purnished for paying etc.!Girls today are building houses and buying cars out of the same, though some a genuiningly aquired! e.g L/stone!They need to pay tax than ignoring wen we know th trth

  36. Lets hope none of us bloggers here patrons matero brothels or indeed pay for their services. Its easy to point at others, kambone mitima shesu. FYI there are men prostitutes as well.

  37. In the current situation, one can actually say that prostitution is already “legalised” in Zambia because it is practised freely and there has never been a single case proscuted! The only difference is that the free trade has not been put down on paper! Most of our homes turned lodges are as good as brothels! So what is the fuss about eh Xian nation, eh immorality encouraged, eh spread of AIDS etc, just fear of the unknown! Its either we gather courage and say it cannot be stopped but lets regulate it OR we put our policing resources to deal with the issue effectively. You will hear human right organizations cashing in big from donors! Our young women are exposed to various risks at night!

  38. # nelipo baba…ningo belenga ma post yama men and i only contribute when i think i have sumthin’ to share.for instance most posts have agreed on regulation of this “industry”.the volume of trade in this industry resulted in much sympathy when the tsunami hammered parts of Asia. all those millions of dollars and pounds donated were intended to rebuild the shattered infrastructure that housed this booming trade!!people die everyday elsewhere from natural disasters…i don’t see the “international” community giving money so freely and so quickly!!!!

  39. there are different categories of whores, working class, street hooker, dominant, sex slave, bar hawker, elite, escorts, kachasu, tarven, etc.. oh, and the (bored house wife) which class are they debating on?

  40. Actually bored (i prefer neglected)housewives are not whores or prostitutes per se. In most cases they become Sugar Mamas and actually will entertain you on their budget. All they want is attention and companionship which inevitably culminates into sex.So they are really not buying your services but indulging with you to help offset their loneliness as well as address their sexual deprivation. Whores on the other hand are preying for monetary gain 24/7 regardless of how many encounters they have in a day.

  41. The whole idear of not legalising prostitution is somehow hypocritic, how can we runaway from reality? prostitution has been there ilegal or not. when you look at the countries with the lowest rate of HIV and AIDS, talk of USA, UK, RUSSIA and almost the whole of Europe, prosititution there is legal but on the other side on the countries where its illegal we have the highest rate of AIDS. One of the major reasons as my brother stated all prostitutes are licensed and always checked for HIV on a regular basis and these sex workers take precautions, they are educated on the dangers and everything ilegally and normally,.
I would also want to to talk about HIV in colleges and universities, in

  42. Why do Zambians want to sound more christian than the rest of the world as if Christ was born in Zambia. No matter how you sound, christ loves everyone jews and moslems. Stop this hypocrisy, GOD forbid, and do the right thing. Prostitution has always been there even in biblical times. Legalize it you jerks.

  43. Legalizing Prostitution in the communities and country wide in particular will just add more and more problems.Looking at rate at which HIV/AIDS, is alarming like no man’s busness and no solution has been found so far.Let us not think like exogenious lets think like indogenious. For us who are not marriege we are in danger I suggest, because I can not marry a prostitute or somebody who has been a prostitute am andrew carson and Ben

  44. Zambia is a Christian nation and we have to abide by the law of the most high. Satan doesnt attack his own.my dear brother Sichamba mentioned about Europe and America but on the contraly I think those are not highly infected because they are his own. Zambia was declared a chritian in the early ninties meaning that it is for Jesus and thats when the devil arises to bring down the weak people of GOD by infecting them with a deadly demon. Prostitutes are the major tools the devil is using to steal, opress, and kill Gods people.
let us not allow our beautiful sisters to work for the devil, PLEASEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!

  45. Ladies and gentlemen,i respect all your opinions that you have expressed here.lets give mutale the suport she needs.legalising prositution in our coutry will take us no where but to the grave.we’ll have more people to die in our communities coz of HIV/AIDS.lets learn from those countries which have legalised prosititution there are number of cases about STIs and unwanted pregnancies, hence abotion is also legalised.our collegue from these rich nations where prostitution is legal have full access to good medication ohhh ohhh mmm our nation can not even afford to give us a pain killer where will we run to.certain things we must leave them.the emulete biblical and our traditional morals

  46. #54 Ka chiluba declared Zambia to be a “christian Nation” not God, because he does not exist! Your sisters in Zambia needs to eat in order to survive in this difficult world, if god is love why is there poverty and so on? I belive Russians pray too but you still in danger of being beaten to death by nazis there. Pray hard that your god will protect you from the black boots. even Maria was a prostitute. prostitution will live longer than your faith in an imaginary god

  47. Come on now, we are all here on this earth breathing because of what daddy did to mama at night.Sometimes even in the daytime. So dont beat about the bush. Call a spade a spade. And dont you dare call this blasphemy cos its the truth!

  48. Yebo#56, stop breathing then and find out if your god is out there, I’m the authority here, you dont realise that you are a slave of your own thoughts and think you’re doing the right things, cuz you’re not. And hey! I dont have the slightest bit of fear of your masters, all i know is i will not make anythingelse above myself but me.
As for blasphemy, Oooh plzzzzzzz, give me a break!!!

  49. y pay 4 sex wen women r plenty jus start a ka normal relationship u wil b screwing 4 free and enjoying at the atmost.

  50. #54
FTJ was busy screwing other men’s women and stealing from the national coffers and supplying arms to rebels in Angola in exchange of diamonds. By so doing he perpetuated the war Angola, deprived many Zambians of their education and health care as well as fornicating. At the the height of all the crimes, he declared himself and the nation God fearing people CHRISTIAN NATION. Today I’m told to think and feel like a christian. It’s all bullsh*t.

  51. it is sad that people can be so rud to God.whether you believe in God or not where all those believe end that where God begins.it is not evry zambian who is a christian when we hear about zambia being a christian nation this is just a declaration and every person in power can declare it.crime will be there and all sorts of evil activites but those who believe in God will be there and will always be there.christianity is life style

  52. Dear bloggers, take time to read this and see what we can learn from these people. Here are some men and women who mocked God :

    John Lennon (Singer):
Some years before, during his interview with an American Magazine, he said: “Christianity will end, it will disappear. I do not have to argue about that. I am certain. Jesus was ok, but his subjects were too simple,
Today we are more famous than Him” (1966).
Lennon, after saying that the Beatles were more famous than Jesus Christ,
    was shot six times.

  53. Tancredo Neves (President of Brazil ):
During the Presidential campaign, he said if he got 500,000 votes from
his party, not even God would remove him from Presidency.
Sure he got the votes, but he got sick a day before being made President,
    then he died

  54. Cazuza (Bi-sexual Brazilian composer, singer and poet):
During A show in Canecio ( Rio de Janeiro ), while smoking his cigarette, he puffed out some smoke into the air and said:
    “God, that’s for you.”
He died at the age of 32 of AIDS in a horrible manner.

  55. The man who built the Titanic
After the construction of the Titanic, a reporter asked him how safe the
Titanic would be. With an ironic tone he said: “Not even God can sink it”
The result: I think you all know what happened to the Titanic

  56. Marilyn Monroe (Actress)
She was visited by Billy Graham during a presentation of a show.
He said the Spirit of God had sent him to preach to her.
After hearing what the Preacher had to say, she said:
    “I don’t need your Jesus”.
A week later, she was found dead in her apartment

  57. Campinas
    (IN 2005)
In Campinas , Brazil a group of friends, drunk, went to pick up a friend…..
The mother accompanied her to the car and was so worried about the drunkenness of her friends and she said to the daughter – holding her hand,
who was already seated in the car:
“My Daughter, Go With God And May He Protect You..”
She responded: “Only If He (God) Travels In The Trunk, Cause Inside Here…..It’ s Already Full ”
Hours later, news came by that they had been involved in a fatal accident, everyone had died, the car could not be recognized what type of car it had been, but surprisingly, the trunk was intact.
The police said there was no way the trunk could have remaine

  58. cont. The police said there was no way the trunk could have remained intact.
To their surprise, inside the trunk was a crate of eggs, none were broken

  59. Christine Hewitt (Jamaican Journalist and entertainer)
Said the Bible (Word of God) was the worst book ever written.
In June 2006 she was found burnt beyond recognition in her motor vehicle .

Many more important people have forgotten that there is no other name that was given so much authority as the name of Jesus.
Many have died, but only Jesus died and rose again, and he is still alive .

  60. Mulu, you data above is well researched and it is documented in the books around the world.we can talk about other issues to ourselves but we must not go to extremes of cursing or blaspheming God.even the problems we face around are hapening coz many people are denying the power of God which can bring healing into our communities.let Jesus be the centre to our solutions.

  61. mulu…u left out mazoka and ur great grand father on the list! if ur great grand father didnt curse God then y did he kick the bucket!?? be it a saint or 2pac, we are gat to go someday!… jesus never rose incase u didnt know! his remains have been found!1000%proven!! christianity was brought into africa by the same govts that brought coloniolism….is this too difficult an equation to solve? christianity is a lie!!! blak people wake up!!!

  62. #74 Well spoken Mudala. I can never understand why Africans want to be Christians or Muslims. These religions were brought by foreign Colonials and were used as a means of wielding power over the the local people. Africans knew about God, long before the arrival of western religions

  63. #74 You hope is that he did not resurrect. Those findings have been disapproved. Chritianity’s message is one Jesus died for you and me (recorded fact of history), jesus rose from the dead – again recorded fact of history. If you took your time to research on these statements you will agree with me. But without that you will remain as is.There are others who know these facts nontheless choose not to believe. I understand that as well.

  64. whether you are a follower of Christ or not the fact is you will meet him on the judgment seat.he is the king and the Lord of lords.he is the savior

  65. John 3:16 says For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.
I believe in Jesus, I believe he is the son of God and I believe he died to wash away my sins and rose again. I believe he will come back again this time to judge this world. Friends accept Jesus as your Lord and saviour today. He is the way the truth and the life.

  66. legalise prostitution!! “christian nation” aside, what sort
of message would that send to our young women. mind you,
every woman has a “kantemba”.it would promote laziness
(why work hard in school when you can legally use your
“kantemba” to earn a living).just think how the next time
you ask your daughter what she wants to be when she grows
up,prostitution will be on the list.
    talk about hypocricy.

  67. I agree with all those who call for regulation- the fact is outlawing prostitution hasn’t worked and won’t work. The Government shouldn’t be given the job of playing moral police simply because it will be a waste of tax-payer’s money. If the government regulates sex workers and places measures for ensuring that the spread of HIV is countained( e.g. tests before employment- a clientel that is tested on a regular basis). Anything outside government control would be illegal and the govt would have the added incentive of ending “black market” prostitution because it would want to protect its tax source. I’d rather we slowed HIV altogether than allowed prostitution to continue uncontrolled.

  68. I think from a biblical point of view alot of zambians will say prostitution is sin and should not be legalised.

But guys may be there is sense when it is controlled because it will be safer by ensuring that sex workers use condoms, the places where this activity takes place can be monitored.

  69. It is amazing how easy it is to hide behind religion and morality when it is convenient for you.

The issue we should be concerning ourselves is how do we address the challenges facing society: HIV AIDS, violence against women and children, displacement, poverty, and a lot others. Have we started to think of our role in all this as individuals instead of pointing fingers? Why is prostitution on the rise? Have we thought about the legal implications of legalising prostitution or we are scared of that? Why do we call it a sin and yet we are promiscuous not sleeping only with our wives? Stop double standards and do something positive for the future!

  70. Emelda Banda? Sounds like she’s been paid to advocate for legalisation of the degrading and devlish business. Friends, lets be serious. When you hear people advocating for such wickedness, know that the end of the world is near. To support prostitution is to support a Sodom lifestyle and we all know what happened to Sodom. This calls for repentance.

  71. The Man (# 1) and Elder (# 11), your argument to legalise prostitution simply becoz it has always been there, does not hold water. Theft and robbery too have been and will always be there. Should they be legalised?

  72. Many who claim that God doesn’t exist actually know He does. They just wish He didn’t exist. Unfortunately for them, their unbelief will only change/affect their destiny and nothing else. Repent while salvation is still within reach.

  73. Christian Nation in name, that is pure hypocrisy- legalizing or not, commercial sex is immoral and that wont make wrong to right. If an entrepreneur opportunity in sex is not present, of course sex workers will be out of business- they are there because the demand is high. Women are enterprising, they will find something else to earn them a living to keep their kids fed., at least one that wont earn them HIV. Men just masturbate, mukashalila fye ubwingi…

  74. #61 sex is never free.ka ma relationship to take off, tu ma out ku manda hill, tu ma talk time , tu ma saloon so either way you pay. why is that after u quarrel with you chick you would be ready to screw and she is like i am not giving it to you, to make you PAY for making her angry, never free my brotha.

  75. It is called the oldest proffesion for a reason. Legalizing it won’t change anything unless you will start charging amaule tax. This is just not zed issue any one in the USA will tell you what just Happened to the New York governor!!

Let as spend our energy in educating people on safer sex and its reprecusions of an protected sex.

  76. Winston Zulu, was in Cleveland Ohio, Thurs June 12 to speak at an AIDS taskforce. He mentioned that two-thirds of the peopleIN Zambia have been affected by HIV/TB. He says was successfully treated. Just wondering how accurate that information is.Any one know???

  77. People, People, wake up! You are already calling it COMMERCIAL sex. Define commerce for me. This trade has outlived time you’all!

  78. Can you imagine doing a prostitute under the legalised system where you are paying lower taxes because the tax base has been broadened? I for one would be enjoing this – VIVA LEGALISATION, AFTER ALL, EVEN IN ISRAEL “THE CHOSEN NATION”, IT IS LEGAL
