Fighting corruption requires enhanced whistle blowers

Share

The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) says there is need to have serious ‘whistle blowing’ in the country if the fight against corruption is to bear its intended results.

ACC Copperbelt Region Community Education Officer, Masauso Lungu, says the fight agaisnt corruption cannot be achieved without enhanced and serious ‘whistle blowers’.

Speaking during a stakeholders meeting in Chlilabombwe yesterday, Mr Lungu said the commission was committed to protect whistle blowers as they are key partners in the anti corruption crusade.

Mr Lungu called on the various stakeholders that attended the meeting to play a role in sensitizing people on corruption and its effects by discussing the subject in their meetings.

He also urged the stakeholders to desist from receiving gifts during the course of duty as the trend may compromise their professional conduct.

“We encourage whistle blowing as it is important in the fight against corruption. All the information we receive is held in confidence. We want people to be eyes and ears of the commission to effectively fight corruption,” he said.

Mr Lungu said corruption needed to be fought vigorously as it kills equal competition in society as well as leading to poor quality of goods and services subsequently retarding the nation’s economic development.

And giving a vote of thanks, District Labour Officer, Callaghan Musonda, thanked the commission for sensitizing stakeholders in Chililabombwe on corruption and its effects.

Among the people who attended the meeting, which was chaired by District Commissioner Timothy Musonda, were Acting Town Clerk Goldwin Chinoya, heads of government departments, school headmasters and Chililabombwe Municipal Council Directors.

  1. When you report a corrupt case then you become a suspect. Not only that many of the corruption cases that have been reported to ACC in the past have not been followed up. As result, evidence has been either been destroyed or tempered with. What else do you expect from whistleblowers?

  2. Editor, did you really mean enhanced whistle blowers? Are they enhanced human beings by any chance? How would that be achieved?
    Discuss, anybody.

  3. #2 They are prostitutes of information as shallow as that may seem. See it all tell it all in exchange for $$$$. They is no way I’m telling on anyway especially since I would become a suspect and might be attacked by those on the receiving end. There is great danger when you try to take that route. Anyone remember Paul Tember? May his soul rest in peace, the state failed to protect him. This is not to say that he was doing it for $$$

  4. Try calling the ACC.They do’nt have a tool free number.Add to that, they will treat you like a suspect. They will put you on hold, ask you to call another mumber and all sorts of lazy excuses why they should not answer and seriously listen to your infromation.I once tried it.Now I think those nuts only act when they receive instructions…from where…who cares?ACC needs reform. Its’ not serving its’ intended purpose.

  5. My mother works for the bank and everytime she blew a whistle on some colleagues she was the one who got punished and since she looks after 8 orphans plus 3 of her own, we felt we were the ones suffering and have since advised her to always keep her mouth shut when she sees anything wrong going on with ZANACO COZ IT IS NOT WORTH IT AFTERALL.

  6. if people in authorities to fight corruption can be suspected of stealing whom are we going to trust to fight it for us?

  7. Have you taken time to look at the auditor General’s report on Defence? You will cry! Zambia is a rich country. Their riches at the expense of a soldier in kanyama.

  8. it needs all peace loving zambians to join hands and fight the scourge. Our Good Government is doing its best. Lets support the crusade as citizens.

  9. We need to support the “whistle blower policy” as this is the only way we can fight corruption. our leaders (fortune seekers) are scared to enact such laws as they are the culprits.
